Man City could find Sergio Aguero’s successor in Erling Braut Haaland

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Manchester City are seeking the signature of RB Salzburg star Erling Braut Haaland according to new reports from The Guardian.

What’s the word?

Haaland has become one of the most wanted men in Europe this season, after bagging an incredible 22 goals in 15 appearances. Six of those came in the Champions League, which means he currently leads elite forwards such as Robert Lewandowski in the goal scoring charts.

The Guardian states that Salzburg are hoping to sell the striker for €60m (£52m), however, City will face competition from 20 different clubs, including the likes of Barcelona and Manchester United.

Aguero’s successor

Filling the boots of Sergio Aguero will be incredibly tough considering he is way ahead of any goalscorer in the history of the football club. His 243 goals for City put him 66 ahead of Eric Brooks, who held the all-time record for 79 years.

However, one man they should certainly be eyeing up to continue his goal scoring dominance is Haaland. His 22 goals in 15 outings so far is the stuff of dreams for any striker and is unprecedented on the continent right now.

Plus, the Norwegian is only 19 years old, which means he could provide goalscoring mayhem in the Premier League for years to come. Often, players will not hit their peak until their late 20s, and considering Haaland is still deeply embedded in the formative stage of his career, he may break all sorts of records in the future.

City are going to face almighty competition for the striker as he is one of the most coveted wonderkids in world football.

However, the club have been no strangers to splashing the cash down the years, and could easily pay the €60m asking price.

Plus, should Pep Guardiola keep on winning titles at the Etihad, City will have a huge advantage in their bid to persuade him to join over the plethora of other superclubs expressing an interest.

It seems the club may well be eyeing up an ideal replacement for the greatest striker in their history.

Real Madrid fans react to the latest Thibaut Courtois update

Thibaut Courtois has definitely seen some better days.

The great Belgian goalkeeper arrived at Real Madrid from Chelsea in the summer of 2018 but his venture at the Spanish capital has been all but easy.

The 27-year-old has already conceded a total of six goals in six La Liga games in the 2019/20 campaign and has been under heavy scrutiny from the fans for a really long time now.

Recently, however, in Real Madrid’s Champions League clash against Club Brugge at the Santiago Bernabeu, Courtois was subbed off at half-time due to some discomfort and inability to continue the game.

Even though we had no idea what caused the issue at first, an official statement from the club clarified things and it seems Courtois is suffering from gastroenteritis with dehydration and electrolyte imbalance as opposed to what was initially reported as anxiety issues.

But even though the Belgian is currently unwell and having a hard time in the squad, many Real Madrid fans felt no sympathy and still bashed the goalkeeper mercilessly.

Many of them were saying they had thought the announcement was actually about him being sold and how they had hoped it to be just that.

It seems that even a difficult injury can’t turn the fans around and Courtois remains a heavily criticised figure in the squad.

You can see some of their replies down in the tweets below:

Barcelona’s efforts to sign Neymar this summer might have serious repercussions

[ad_pod ]

About two years ago, in the summer of 2017/18, a story broke out about Paris Saint-Germain’s reported interest in the services of Neymar Jr. At that time, it just seemed like one of those stereotypical rumours that we get almost every year: “Team X is interested in team Y’s most popular player and this time, it looks serious.”

And it always seem to be the same old narrative: the interest is real, team Y are in danger of losing their key player, the deal seems more than just likely and this time it’s definitely happening. But it never does, does it?

Neymar, for that reason, seemed likely to stay. After all, who in their right mind could even pay his €222m (£198.6m) release clause and who can even muster such an amount even if they wanted to? Paris Saint-Germain, that’s who.

In the summer of 2017/18, a world-record was shattered, as presumably were many Catalan hearts in the process as well. Neymar thought he had made the move that would finally get him out of Lionel Messi’s shadow, a move that would make him the no.1 player in the team and the move that would, one day, make him the best player in the world.

To cut a long story short – it didn’t. None of those things happened, and fast forward a couple of years from that transfer to the most recent summer transfer window, we’ve gone full circle once again: team X is interested in team Y’s key man and the deal looks rather likely. Even the clubs in question are the same. Only this time, their roles have reversed.

And the media were really milking the Neymar saga of 2019 to the best of their abilities. “Neymar day”, “ultimatum”, “final move” and many more graced the covers of various different outlets on a daily basis. It became a never-ending soap opera.

Watch Spanish Football Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Finally, 2 September arrived and this time, the good old saga had a different outcome: Neymar had stayed in Paris, for better or worse of the Blaugrana. Once again, many Catalan hearts were broken. Some could have wanted him back and some presumably rejoiced as the deal collapsed. But that’s nothing new and we can’t say for sure if it would definitely make a difference either way.

But despite the fact the Brazilian star remained in the French capital, there’s still this feeling that the whole saga might’ve had a serious toll on the Barcelona squad and their brand as a whole.

Two years ago, they were powerless from stopping Neymar from leaving. But that was out of their hands, right? After all, who would’ve thought that there was a club out there willing and able to pay that ridiculous release clause? Still, they couldn’t convince Neymar – close friend of Messi and Luis Suarez as well as one of the best players in the world – to stay at their club, try as they might.

Whether they would admit it or not, but back then, they were humiliated by Paris Saint-Germain. Prior to that whole saga, the French giant vetoed Marco Verratti’s move to Catalonia, and then they went and snatched their dancing partner’s most valuable asset after Messi. That’s the definition of a power play if there ever was one.

And now, in 2019, the same thing happened. PSG were reportedly willing to open the door for Neymar to leave. After all, having such an expensive player rotting on the bench or even worse, in the stands, didn’t make much sense for them both financially or sporting wise. The fans have turned against him, he was burning a hole in their wallets and disrupting the team’s harmony with his antics. He simply had to go; for the right price, of course.

Suffice it to say, the right price never came and without it, neither did Neymar’s one-way ticket back to the sunny pitches of Catalonia and to Messi’s embrace. What did arrive back to Barcelona, however, was another slap in the face of their brand, their squad and their players.

Why, you may ask.

It’s simple really. Barcelona were not really secretive about their desire to get Neymar. President Josep Maria Bartomeu even spoke about it after the market had already closed. The media didn’t help either with their daily reports and leaked gossip. But the absolute worst part of it is actually something else entirely.

Everyone knew Barcelona didn’t have the funds to buy Neymar outright, cash in hand, no questions asked. Far from it, actually. Just weeks before that, they had completed a multi-million deal to get Antoine Griezmann from Atletico Madrid and even that required a bank loan. How could they possibly get Neymar on top of the costly Frenchman?

Two options were considered. Firstly, a loan with an obligation to buy next summer. After all, this is exactly the tactic Paris Saint-Germain used when they bought Kylian Mbappe. If they used it before, surely they would accept it themselves. But they didn’t and Barcelona had to offer players instead.

Reportedly, the likes of Nelson Semedo, Jean-Clair Todibo, Ivan Rakitić and Ousmane Dembele were used as bargaining chips in Barcelona’s more than desperate attempts to seal the deal with the French titans. “A game of poker”, said one of Sport’s countless articles published during the window. And that one really hit the nail squarely on the head.

Players become nothing more than currency, a way of getting what you want and merely chips on the table. Not only has that ensured that Barcelona, once again, look weak, powerless and desperate in the eyes of many, but it also presumably must have had an impact on the players in question as well.

Dembele has had trouble with injuries, Rakitić has only started one La Liga fixture so far this season, Todibo is still waiting for a genuine first team opportunity having played just 4 minutes in the league and Semedo is beginning to hold down a regular berth at right-back.

But even if we disregard all of those things, the club’s willingness to include them in a potential deal for Neymar was a clear sign that they are not the most highly valued of assets. Whether you’re the most confident player in the world or not, that must make you wonder at least a tiny bit.

We’re yet to fully determine whether the whole saga will have any consequences and effects on the players, but it wouldn’t be a stretch to say that tangible consequences may manifest throughout the season.

Barcelona wanted to look like saviours; a team that is willing to give Neymar a second chance, a team willing to offer him an exit from a club he clearly doesn’t want to play for anymore. But instead, they were made to look weak and desperate.

Neymar might not have cost Barcelona a single penny this summer, but the Spaniards might still pay a huge price in the not so distant future.

Only time will tell.

Leeds must be careful with Kalvin Phillips following Saturday knock

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

By April last season, Leeds had endured a term that was plagued by 31 separate injury issues.

Already this campaign we’ve seen Barry Douglas and Liam Cooper sit out various matches because of their own problems so fitness concerns may still lie within the squad.

It’s become rather synonymous with the club and the fact they have very limited options in some areas of the pitch isn’t ideal, especially for a club competing for promotion.

With that in mind, there was a key warning sign last Saturday that dictates the Whites must be careful with Kalvin Phillips.

On the chalkboard

The 23-year-old was the subject of a transfer saga during the summer, being linked with a host of Premier League clubs.

He attracted the interest of Wolves, Bournemouth and also Aston Villa but he ultimately stayed in Yorkshire.

Contract talks have been re-opened so his presence at Elland Road could now last even longer.

But they must be cautious with him and his fitness.

Against Swansea, the midfielder limped through large periods of the game, although his performance level didn’t seem to drop too highly.

Versus Steve Cooper’s side, he attempted ten tackles, six of which came in the second half. That’s one of the best aspects of his game, winning more per game than anyone in the division.

That shows just how crucial he is to Marcelo Bielsa’s side but the fact he had to play on through a niggle should be concerning.

In truth, it should have a few alarm bells ringing in the ears of the Argentine.

Watch Leeds United Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Realistically, Leeds have very few players that can replace him. In the first-team squad only Alfie McCalmont looks like someone who can play in defensive midfield but he’s vastly inexperienced.

They lack real depth in Phillips’ position on the pitch and consequently his workload is expected to be quite high. Last term he appeared 44 times in the Championship, a number he may end up replicating in 2019/20.

But that won’t happen if they fail to nurse him sufficiently. In theory, it may appear foolish that he started outings against Salford and Stoke in the League Cup.

They were ideal opportunities to rest him but that now doesn’t seem possible considering they’re out of the competition.

A solution is needed and that may come in bringing him off when games are already wrapped up. Phillips is yet to be substituted this season which both underlines his importance and why they have to be more careful.

Crystal Palace fans fume with Roy Hodgson after Max Meyer substitution

[ad_pod ]

Crystal Palace fans struggled to compose themselves during their 1-0 defeat to Sheffield United on Sunday afternoon, understandably being left angered at their team’s lack of ability.

It was one decision, in particular, from manager Roy Hodgson that almost sent some supporters over the edge.

In the 64th minute, he decided to bring Max Meyer off, a player who had been playing out of position on the flank. On in his place came Jeffrey Schlupp.

The consolation was that it would at least get a wide player attacking down the channels but it didn’t please Palace supporters one bit.

A fan couldn’t help but think of relegation with their reaction whilst another told the club to liquidate.

Hodgson’s substitute was deemed an awful decision by a further individual as one supporter was concerned by the lack of common sense.

Palace struggled to find much rhythm as striker Christian Benteke was restricted to just one shot. The result was hardly surprising given the fact that Meyer wasn’t playing in his favoured number ten role.

It was a decision that meant star man Wilfried Zaha played alongside the big Belgian as the Eagles failed to find the back of the net.

Here’s what Palace fans said when Meyer was taken off.

Bundesliga Transfer Roundup: Lukebakio close to Hertha, Rhein news, Duo want Smith-Rowe

[ad_pod ]

Yesterday’s Bundesliga transfer roundup consisted of Everton’s interest in Jean-Philippe Gbamin, Bayer Leverkusen’s signature of Nadiem Amiri and the extension of Florian Kohfeldt’s contract at Werder Bremen. Today’s edition is comprised of Dodi Lukebakio’s impending move to Hertha Berlin, Chelsea’s pursuit of Bayern Munich youngster Torben Rhein and a duo’s desire to take Emile Smith-Rowe back to the Bundesliga.

Hertha close to Lukebakio

Report: As per L’Equipe, Hertha Berlin have made an offer of €20m (£18.2m) for Watford’s Dodi Lukebakio, which is said to be enough to satisfy the London outfit. The 21-year-old will sign a five-year contract with the German side and will have his medical on Thursday.

Verdict: L’Equipe added in their piece that Hertha moved ahead of Lille, who are competing in the Champions League next season, to get to Lukebakio. This shows the financial power that new investor Lars Windhorst can wield. The forward already spent last season on loan at Fortuna Dusseldorf and impressed – during the first half of the campaign, anyway. Before the winter break, the Belgium U21 international scored 11 goals, but he only added three more from January onwards. He clearly needs to be more consistent to prove he is worth such an abnormally big commitment from Die Alte Dame – if he signs for the reported fee, he would be the club’s most expensive signing ever by €12m (£10.9m) – but he has already proven that he can do it against the biggest sides, having netted a hat-trick against Bayern and a goal against Borussia Dortmund last year.

How likely is the deal? 9/10

Chelsea eye Rhein

Report: According to Sport1, Chelsea are interested in signing Bayern Munich youngster Torben Rhein. The Blues are said to have offered the 16-year-old a contract starting from 2020 as they cannot buy players currently due to their transfer ban.

Verdict: Frank Lampard and co are clearly planning ahead by trying to take Rhein to Stamford Bridge. The Germany U16 international moved to Munich from Hertha Berlin two years ago and has impressed in the Bavarian outfit’s U17 team, where he has scored 12 goals in 26 games from midfield. Making the move abroad at such a young age is a big step for any youngster, especially to a club like Chelsea where prodigies regularly fail to make the grade. But the performances of the likes of Jadon Sancho and Reiss Nelson in the Bundesliga should give other players like Rhein hope that it is possible to succeed outside of their birthplace at this stage in their careers. The transfer of teenagers is far more frequent than it used to be, so this is one worth keeping an eye on.

How likely is the deal? 7/10

Wolfsburg and Bremen want Smith-Rowe

Report: It is understood by The Telegraph that Wolfsburg are hoping to complete the season-long loan signing of Arsenal’s Emile Smith-Rowe. However, Die Wölfe will face competition from Werder Bremen for his signature.

Verdict: The 19-year-old has already spent time in the Bundesliga, but it did not go his way at RB Leipzig during the second half of last season. Due to abductor and groin injuries, the midfielder was only able to make three appearances for the club, which was not exactly what either Arsenal or Leipzig will have had in mind when they agreed the deal. However, he now looks to have a second chance at getting some vital first-team experience and Wolfsburg should be able to offer that. With the Gunners wanting the England U19 international to get more first-team minutes, a loan move is the best option, but Wolfsburg will have to be wary of Bremen’s pursuit as well.

How likely is the deal? 8/10

Man Utd set to target Dier instead of Ndombele, to delight of Spurs fans

[ad_pod ]

Manchester United are set to target Eric Dier instead of Lyon midfielder Tanguy Ndombele, per TeamTalk, leaving Tottenham Hotspur fans in hysterics.

Ndombele has been a major target for Spurs this summer, with The Guardian reporting that the club are in talks with the French outfit over a possible deal.

The aforementioned TeamTalk report claims that United attempted to muscle in, however, by making an approach towards the France international.

Ndombele, however, is said to have told the Red Devils that he would prefer to move to Spurs, who finished five points clear of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side in 2018/19.

As a result, United are, ironically, instead set to target Eric Dier, of Spurs, as they look to reinforce their midfield in the summer transfer market.

And the latest developments have left Spurs fans in hysterics, with their top target seemingly keen to join them at the expense of their rivals.
