INEOS discussing personal terms over signing Ighalo 2.0 at Man Utd

Since the summer of 2023, Manchester United have dished out roughly £174.5m on three new centre-forwards, having plumped for youth by bringing in Rasmus Hojlund, Joshua Zirkzee and Benjamin Sesko in successive summers.

The result? Well, that costly trio have since scored just 20 Premier League goals between them across the last two-and-a-half years, with United seemingly repeating their approach in the market, yet expecting a different result.

Turning to relatively unproven young strikers has been the theme of recent times at Old Trafford, representing a clear shift away from a more short-term approach that saw the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Edinson Cavani and Cristiano Ronaldo parachuted in to lead the line.

That trend also came amid the search for more left-field, stop-gap striker signings in the mould of Wout Weghorst and Odion Ighalo, with it looking as if the INEOS regime could repeat the trick with their own wildcard move in 2026.

Man Utd discussing personal terms for the new Ighalo

For so long has the lack of a consistent, world-class number nine plagued the Red Devils, with Robin van Persie still the last player to have scored 20 league goals for the club in a single season.

Things might have been different had Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Erling Haaland recommendation not been ignored, with the treble winner having also chased his compatriot during his first full season at the club in 2019/20.

As it proved, the Norwegian machine joined Borussia Dortmund ahead of the 2020 January window, with United left scrambling on deadline day, acquiring boyhood fan Odion Ighalo on an initial loan deal from Chinese outfit, Shanghai Shenhua.

That was certainly not a deal that would have been anticipated in advance, with the same perhaps true regarding Auxerre marksman, Lassine Sinayoko, amid reports that INEOS are pushing ahead with a move for the Ligue 1 star.

Indeed, as per Africa Foot, United are discussing personal terms with the 26-year-old, with the two parties believed to be coming close to finalising a €3m (£2m) salary agreement.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The suggestion is that Ruben Amorim’s side want to secure a deal next month, prior to Sinayoko joining on a free transfer next summer.

Why United could be targeting their new Ighalo

Whether Sinayoko does arrive in January or at the end of the season, he could represent the wildcard addition that Amorim is in need of, not least with the aforementioned Sesko having scored just twice since his summer switch from RB Leipzig.

The Auxerre hitman may not be a glamour, household name, although the example of Ighalo showcases that a left-field swoop can bear fruit, with the experienced Nigerian making a solid impact in his new surroundings in Manchester.

Indeed, the former Watford star ultimately scored five times in his first six months at Old Trafford, namely netting a stunning juggling effort away at LASK Linz in the Europa League.

His stay was certainly brief, and hardly prolific, but Ighalo proved to be a useful tool under Solskjaer, not least as United went deep in both the FA Cup and Europa League.

Like in the case of the 2020 arrival, there is a real joy in seeing something of an unsung talent begin to blossom at United, with the club having far too often been stung by pursuing the high-profile, expensive deals instead.

Should Sinayoko arrive on a free transfer, he might well fit into the Ighalo category, having been a solid, albeit unspectacular performer during his stint in France.

Currently on AFCON duty with Mali, the 6 foot 1 forward has scored six times this season in Ligue 1, after previously registering 14 goals and assists in France’s top-flight last term.

While not prolific himself, he would – like Ighalo – provide United with a real focal point in attack, with his physical prowess seen in how he ranks in the top 2% of strikers in Europe’s top five leagues for interceptions per 90, as per FBref, as well as in the top 8% for tackles made.

Equally, like Ighalo – who scored 16 times in 37 games for Nigeria – Sinayoko has proven his quality on the international stage, with his two recent strikes at this year’s AFCON ensuring he now boasts nine goals in 27 games for his country.

With Sesko struggling and Zirkzee seemingly on his way to Roma, United are certainly in need of at least one striker heading into 2026, ensuring a bargain swoop for a figure like Sinayoko could be just what is needed.

As Ighalo did before him, he might well just surprise a few.

Upgrade on Mount: INEOS make “world-class” star Man Utd's “No.1 target”

Manchester United’s current midfield crop could be under threat if new additions arrive in 2026.

2019/20: Five key dates that will decide if Norwich can survive in the Premier League

[ad_pod ]

Getting (back) into the Premier League might be tough, but imagine how difficult it must be for smaller teams to survive the whole season and live to tell the tale. Norwich City will once again experience that rush this year, and here are five key dates that just might decide if they can finish above the relegation zone or not.

9 August, Liverpool (A)

A true baptism by fire, as Norwich will immediately face the runners-up for the title at Anfield. It’s one of the two worst-case scenarios for the opening day, but it will be a good judge to see just what the newcomers are all about.

31 August, West Ham (A)

Facing a middle of the pack team sandwiched between Chelsea (H) and Manchester City (H), followed by Burnley (A) is a nice mixture of different kinds of opposition to face. This could tell us how they stand in comparison with both the top and bottom dogs of the PL, and if they have what it takes to survive.

5 October, Aston Villa (H)

Beating Aston Villa, their fellow promoted side, is going to be essential. Just like the Canaries, Villa will be hoping to survive, and getting points from someone you already know you can beat is key. Not to mention, this game is sandwiched between other fixtures in which they’ll definitely be looking to pick up a couple of Ws.

26 October, Manchester United (H)

Shortly after that, Daniel Farke’s side will welcome Manchester United to Carrow Road, and if they are going to take any top-tier scalps, the Red Devils just might be their best bet. Taking down a Goliath or two throughout the season is what “smaller” teams are best at, and it often turns out to be the deciding factor in the race against relegation.

14 March, Southampton (H)

Southampton are one of those lower-tier teams Norwich will absolutely have to bury into the dirt if they want to survive. The Saints will have similar goals going into the 2019/20 season, and the two might become big rivals in that respect. Picking up points in the final stretches of the marathon should be high on the priority list.

Leeds dealt Liam Cooper blow

Leeds United have been dealt a fresh blow over captain Liam Cooper as he recovers from his hamstring injury…

What’s the latest?

Injury expert Ben Dinnery has claimed that the centre-back’s return to training does not mean that he will be back sooner than expected.

The Premier League Injuries site owner has explained why the Scotland international may not be back in the team in the immediate future.

He told Football Insider: “We always thought it was going to be around three months but I think that mid-March is realistic now.

“Just because you’re back training, that doesn’t mean you’re ready to be part of the first team. It can actually be a bit of a red herring.

“There are lots of exercises to complete and hoops you need to jump through before you get to that stage.

“Leeds need Cooper to be ready when he does come back. If it adds a few weeks on the timeline for the sake of not rushing him, it’ll be worth it.”

Fuming

Leeds fans will surely be fuming with this claim as Cooper’s return to training may have led them to believe that he would be back in contention in the early parts of March.

He was not involved in the matchday squad against Leicester and Dinnery’s comments suggest that he may not be back for the massive clashes with Aston Villa and Norwich at Elland Road. Having the captain back for successive home matches against bottom-half sides would have been a huge boost as his leadership on the pitch would have been a lift to the side.

Instead, Jesse Marsch will need to deal with the current crop of defensive options who have been letting the club down all season. Leeds have conceded the most goals (61) in the entire division this season and have only kept three clean sheets in 27 matches.

All three of those shutouts came in Cooper’s 15 appearances to date. This highlights the difference between him being in and out of the side, as the Whites have failed to keep a single clean sheet in the 12 matches that he has been absent for.

Therefore, Leeds are in desperate need of his presence at the back to improve their defence and improve their chances of avoiding relegation to the Championship. This is why fans will be fuming that his return to training will not see him return for another couple of games, at least, according to Dinnery.

AND in other news, “Definitely”: Insider drops teasing Elland Road claim that’ll have Leeds fans buzzing…

Rangers endured Luka Modric howler

Rangers sporting director Ross Wilson worked hard to improve Gio van Bronckhorst’s Ibrox squad in the January transfer window.

He brought in James Sands, Mateusz Zukowski, Aaron Ramsey and Amad Diallo, but they are all yet to establish themselves as regulars in the first team.

There is still plenty of time for them to prove that they were good signings by the Gers chief, but sometimes transfer windows can be remembered for the players who got away.

This may well be the case for one particular deal during the late Walter Smith’s reign in Glasgow. The club had a major howler over their failure to sign Luka Modric, now of Real Madrid, for £3.5m towards the start of his career during Smith’s tenure in charge.

Ally McCoist has revealed that Smith refused to act on his suggestion to sign the Croatian legend whilst he was still playing in his home country, before the midfielder went on to join Tottenham and then Real Madrid.

The legendary striker explained: “Walter sent me over to Dinamo Zagreb to look at the right back who went to Spurs as well, Vedran Corluka.

“He phoned me after the game and said ‘what do you think?’ and I said ‘I’ll tell you gaffer, they’ve got a wee boy in the middle of the park, he’s absolutely outrageous, see how much money we’ve got’.”I think we could have got him for £3.5million but we didn’t have the money. Aw wow. We didn’t have the money. He asked ‘how much?’ and I said three and a half million and he said we can’t afford it.”

£3.5m for a future Ballon d’Or winner does not seem like a bad deal in hindsight but the Gers were unwilling to push the boat out to bring him in, and they may now look back on that moment and wonder what could have been. To be fair, Smith was just doing what he thought was in the best interests of the club, but it is interesting to think what Modric would have been like at Rangers.

Brazilian icon Kaka previously said that the 36-year-old plays football “like a dance”, and his incredible trophy haul suggests that he has had plenty of experience dancing in celebration throughout his career. He has won 23 trophies at club level – including the Champions League four times – and won the Ballon d’Or, UEFA Best Player in Europe and The Best FIFA Men’s Player in 2018.

This means that Rangers missed out on signing someone who would go on to be the best player in the world for a fee of £3.5m, which is why they may look back on this now as a huge howler by the club – albeit with a lot of hindsight involved.

Newcastle: Fraser a doubt for Saints clash

Newcastle United winger Ryan Fraser is a doubt for the trip to Southampton on Thursday, according to Hampshire Live’s Rob Warlow.

The Lowdown: Fraser starring for Newcastle

The Scot has been a regular under Eddie Howe, missing just one Premier League game under the Newcastle boss since December.

Hailed as ‘brilliant’ by Paul Robinson, the 28-year-old has enjoyed a run of starts on the right and left wings, helping the Magpies to go eight matches unbeaten in the top flight.

He scored and provided an assist on Saturday against Brighton at St James’ Park but made way in the second half nursing a slight injury.

The Latest: Warlow’s claim on Fraser

Saints reporter Warlow looked at Newcastle’s squad ahead of Thursday’s meeting, with Kieran Trippier, Callum Wilson, Jamal Lewis, Isaac Hayden and Matt Ritchie all set to be missing.

Fraser was also labelled as an injury doubt in Hampshire Live in what would be another injury blow for Howe, especially following the 28-year-old’s form in recent weeks.

The Verdict: What will Howe do?

January signing Bruno Guimaraes was the man who replaced Fraser on the weekend, so he could be a possible option to come in for the Scotland international on the south coast in what would be a first Newcastle start for the Brazilian.

Howe will have other options, though, with both Allan Saint-Maximin and Miguel Almiron also on the bench last time out.

Even though Fraser looks likely to become the squad’s sixth absentee for Thursday night, it’s good to know that the manager has a few options as he looks to guide the Magpies to nine top-flight games without defeat.

Rangers: Dinnery on John Souttar ‘worry’

John Souttar’s injury record is a ‘worry’ but Rangers should be encouraged by his improved availability this season.

That’s according to injury expert Ben Dinnery, who was speaking to Football Insider.

The lowdown

Hearts centre-back Souttar has agreed to join Rangers in the summer when his Tynecastle contract expires.

In the 2018/19 season however, the Scottish centre-back missed 15 games with a hip problem, and in the first half of 19/20, he was absent for a further 15 after undergoing ankle surgery (via Transfermarkt).

Then came an Achilles tendon rupture in the spring of 2020 that ruled him out for more than a year.

Souttar, currently out of action with a fresh ankle problem, has had four separate lay-offs this season but each have been minor, sidelining him for only ten games in total up to this point.

The latest

Dinnery is waiting to see whether this season heralds a long-term change of fortunes for Souttar after his previous “massive” injury nightmares.

“If you looked at the last few seasons, his availability rate has been impacted massively,” he said. “He had 11 league starts across 2019-20 and 2020-21.

“That is a worry. However, you look at this season and his availability is very good.

“Potentially, he could end up playing the most Premiership minutes this season than he has done in his recent career.

“I think he’s shown he’s over that significant setback. It’ll need to be discussed but I think this season he has shown he has been able to bounce back.”

The verdict

It’s vitally important that Souttar is able to stay fit for the most part.

As Chris Jack, journalist for The Herald and The Glasgow Times, points out, he’s shaping up to be a direct replacement for Connor Goldson, also out of contract in the summer.

And Goldson has been virtually ever-present this term, completing 90 minutes in all but one of Rangers’ 30 Scottish Premiership matches.

Rangers will face serious questions about his suitability if another serious problem materialises.

In other news, this out-of-favour Rangers defender could move on in the summer.

Liverpool: Reds named as Onana suitors

Liverpool have been named as potential suitors for the signing of LOSC Lille midfielder Amadou Onana in a report from German news outlet MOPO (via Sport Witness).

The lowdown: Onana impressing in France

Since joining the French Ligue 1 club in the summer of 2021 from HSV Hamburg, the 20-year-old starlet has been on an upwards trajectory in terms of form.

Recently hailed for producing his ‘best match ever’ by Football Wonderkids on Twitter, Onana appears to be catching the eye.

Indeed, he bagged the only goal in Lille’s 1-0 win against Nantes at the weekend, also taking the ball from the opposition a whopping 11 times, and now a report from Germany claims that the Reds are among the admirers.

The latest: ‘Growing’ interest

It’s claimed by MOPO, as translated via SW, that Liverpool are ‘hot’ for the Belgium Under 21 ace, who is also wanted by West Ham.  The report states that ‘several Premier League clubs are vying’ for the defensive-minded midfielder with interest from Anfield ‘now growing’.

Hamburg are watching on closely, as they will be due a sell-on fee from Lille if the French outfit cash in.

He has previously admitted to a desire to follow a similar career path to Divock Origi, saying ‘sign me up immediately’ at the prospect of joining a big club like Real Madrid or Liverpool.

The verdict: One for the future

As both Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain approach the final 12 months of their contracts on Merseyside, Jurgen Klopp may well dip into the transfer market this summer.

All of Jordan Henderson, Thiago and James Milner are seemingly in need of constant fitness management and therefore add to the need for further reinforcements in Klopp’s squad.

Rangers predicted XI vs Celtic

Gio van Bronckhorst’s Rangers return to action in the Premiership at Ibrox today after a two-week international break.

The Gers have an opportunity to go level on points with their rivals at the top of the league table in the Old Firm clash in Glasgow this lunchtime.

Prior to the international fixtures, Rangers won 2-1 in their Scottish top-flight clash away at Dundee, with Aaron Ramsey and Connor Goldson scoring the goals for the Light Blues.

How many changes will Van Bronckhorst make to the team? Here is our predicted XI…

We are predicting that he will make four alterations to the side from last time out, with Leon Balogun, Ryan Jack, Glen Kamara and Kemar Roofe all coming in.

Starting at the back, Balogun may come in to replace Filip Helander. The Swedish defender was taken off at half-time a fortnight ago and has struggled since returning, recording SofaScore ratings of 6.2, 6.5 and 6.7 respectively in his three Premiership appearances in 2022.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria international has averaged a SofaScore rating of 7.02 in the top flight across 17 appearances for the Gers. This suggests that he may currently be the better option of the two, as he has been putting in a higher standard of performances, which is why Van Bronckhorst may bring him into the starting XI.

Rangers lined up in a 4-2-3-1 formation against Dundee and we are predicting that the Dutchman will go with a 4-3-3 to add more defensive solidity across the middle of the park in what is set to be a huge game in the title race.

Scott Arfield was hooked at half-time at Dens Park for Joe Aribo, but we are predicting that neither of them will start and that Kamara will be the one to come in.

Aribo struggled on international duty as he lost five of his six duels away to Ghana and failed to complete any dribbles, tackles, interceptions or key passes, as per SofaScore. He was dubbed “useless” by journalist Zino Mulla after his performances for Nigeria and this should act as a warning to Van Bronckhorst to avoid starting the dud whilst his confidence is shot.

Kamara’s former Dundee coach Neil McCann once dubbed him “perfect”, and that’s what he may start with John Lundstram and Jack on either side of him, the latter coming in for James Sands. His two midfield partners can go from box to box with their energy and robustness, whilst Kamara has the quality to set the tempo and dictate the play from deep, with an exceptional 91% pass accuracy on 56 passes per game in the Premiership.

At the top of the pitch, Alfredo Morelos will need to be replaced. Van Bronckhorst has confirmed that the attacker will be absent, saying: “Morelos will be assessed and hopefully we can give more news after the weekend. Unfortunately for all of us he won’t be with us on Sunday, we won’t have him back in the next couple of weeks.”

This leaves the position free for Roofe to come in and take the number nine position, with the rest of the team remaining unchanged.

Rangers submit opening loan bid to sign a big upgrade on Aasgaard

Glasgow Rangers may have been expecting more from Thelo Aasgaard when they reportedly agreed to pay £3.5m to sign the attacking midfielder from Luton Town in the summer transfer window.

After 25 matches in a Light Blues shirt in all competitions, the Norway international has as many red cards (one) as goals for the Scottish Premiership giants, per Sofascore.

The former Wigan star has also only managed two assists in those 25 games, the latest of which was a long punt up the field that Youssef Chermiti managed to get on the end of against Hearts.

Rangers make approach to sign Championship star

Just a matter of months on from signing Aasgaard, the Gers could be about to land an upgrade on him amid interest in another attacking midfielder.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

According to GIVEMESPORT, Glasgow Rangers have made an approach to sign versatile attacker Josh Windass from Championship side Wrexham in the January transfer window.

The report claims that the Gers have made an approach to enquire about the possibility of a loan deal for the English attacking midfielder, as they look to bolster their squad ahead of the second half of the season.

That said, according to Record Sport, Wrexham are currently not looking to part ways with the 31-year-old forward, who joined them on a free transfer from Sheffield Wednesday in the summer, and have rejected Rangers’ opening loan bid.

Windass scored 19 goals in 73 games for Rangers before joining Wigan in 2018, per Transfermarkt, and worked with Danny Rohl at Sheffield Wednesday in the 2024/25 campaign.

Why Rangers should sign Josh Windass

Eyebrows may be raised about signing a player from a less-than-memorable era at Ibrox under Pedro Caixinha, but he did score 12 goals in 28 Premiership matches in his last full season at Ibrox, per Transfermarkt.

Since moving back to England, Windass has forged a respectable career for himself in the Championship, notably with Sheffield Wednesday and Wrexham in recent seasons.

Journalist Rob Staton claimed that the 31-year-old star “scored special goals” for the Owls, and that has continued since his move to Wrexham in the summer, as proven by the clip below.

Windass, who can play as an attacking midfielder or as a centre-forward, has scored six goals from 3.39 xG and assisted three goals from five ‘big chances’ created, per Sofascore, in the Championship this season for the Welsh outfit.

It may not be a popular or exciting option, as he is a 31-year-old Championship player who has played for Rangers already, but his form since the start of last season suggests that a deal for him would improve Rohl’s side.

Meanwhile, Aasgaard produced two goals and one assist in 17 appearances in the Championship for Luton in the second half of last season, per Sofascore, and has followed that up with one goal and two assists in 25 games for Rangers in all competitions.

The Norwegian midfielder has flopped badly at Ibrox, as evidenced by his lack of impact at the top end of the pitch, and that may be why the Light Blues are reportedly looking at Windass as a potential signing ahead of the January transfer window.

Their respective statistics suggest that the Englishman would return to Ibrox as a huge upgrade on Aasgaard, by offering more of a threat as both a scorer and a creator of goals, which is why he could be an excellent addition to the squad.

However, the Gers must now attempt to convince Wrexham to change their mind and part ways with the attacking midfielder in the coming weeks, given that they are currently not planning to let go of the former Owls attacker.

How can Nottingham Forest replace Johnson?

Nottingham Forest are interested in signing £180k rated Newcastle attacking midfielder Elliot Anderson who has been labelled “classy” and “like Peter Beardsley” by Graham Carr.

What’s the talk?

Forest are said to be rivalling QPR and Preston North End for the 19-year olds signature, according to The Mirror, via Football League World.

He has two senior appearances for Newcastle United to his name. With that said, they may want to hold onto him for a little while longer meaning a loan move might be more likely.

Given where Forest sit in the Championship table compared to the others vying for his signature, they should be in pole position.

He is currently on loan at Bristol Rovers in League Two where he has excelled contributing six goals in just 15 appearances for the Pirates, helping Joey Barton’s side in their push for promotion.

A perfect replacement for Johnson

Anderson could be the perfect replacement for ‘prospect’ Brennan Johnson who has been targeted by several Premier League clubs, including Newcastle.

They would be huge shoes to fill with Johnson topping the goal scoring charts at the City Ground this season with 14.

He may have less experience overall, but he is slightly younger than the Reds’ star who only burst onto the scene himself last season.

Forest is also the perfect place when it comes to developing young talents, this season their academy has achieved success by reaching the FA Youth Cup semi-final where they are still yet to face Chelsea.

There are also certain aspects of the game where Anderson is already excelling. When it comes to total shots per 90 minutes he sits on 3.62 compared to Johnson’s 1.96.

One thing his parent club would have to assess is how much game time he would get. If Forest do end up losing Johnson then it would make this move even more likely.

They will also be without striker Lewis Grabban whose contract is up at the end of the season.

As Newcastle have already shown interest in 20-year old Johnson, maybe a deal involving the two could be done. Either way, it can’t be long until we see both players at a higher level than they currently are.
