Tim Spiers’ stat excites many Wolves fans – %%sitename%%

Wolves’ Leander Dendoncker has found himself in the spotlight for all of the right reasons, receiving huge praise as a result.

The 25-year-old has been an important figure for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side over the past two seasons, making a total of 35 starts in that time (Whoscored).

This was further illustrated by the Portuguese tactician’s comments over the summer about the 10-cap Belgium international, describing him as a “fantastic footballer and a hard worker” (via Express and Star).

To add to this, The Athletic’s Tim Spiers posted a statistic which shed further good light on Dendoncker. He revealed that, whenever the 6 foot 1 midfielder has started this season, Wolves have taken all three points and kept a clean sheet every time. When he doesn’t feature in the line-up, Nuno’s team have conceded seven goals and lost both encounters.

Understandably, many supporters were quick to praise the Belgian for the work that he’s put in for Wolves, highlighting that he is “criminally underrated”.

Spurs could have dream midfield duo with Weston McKennie arrival

According to ESPN, Tottenham are facing increasing competition for Schalke midfielder Weston McKennie.

What’s the word?

Despite having already signed Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg this summer, it appears Jose Mourinho hasn’t finished rebuilding the Spurs midfield ahead of the start of the new Premier League campaign next month.

ESPN claim that the Lilywhites’ reported target, McKennie, is now being pursued by other Premier League clubs, but that it’s Southampton who are currently “leading the race” for the signing of the USA international.

Is it Mido or Pedro Mendes? This Spurs quiz will separate the loyal from the fake…

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

The report adds that a deal for the 21-year-old could reach up to £20m.

Imagine him and Hojbjerg

Whilst Spurs may feel they already have the ‘defensive midfield’ aspect of their squad sorted following the arrival of Hojbjerg, just imagine the kind of unbreakable wall Jose Mourinho could help build if he paired the Denmark international with McKennie.

The Schalke ace is another ball-winning ace whose energy and relentless running is a perfect match for the modern game. His manager at the Bundesliga side, David Wagner, said: “He’s an outstanding talent. In the No.6 or No.8 position he has the mentality, a real working mentality that you need. And he’s brave on the ball as well.”

His teammate at international, Reggie Cannon, further backed that up, revealing: “If you lose the ball, you know he’s going to be the first one running (to get) the ball. He’s a leader and that’s something I can learn from – everyone can learn from to up their game.”

Whilst playing two workman like midfielders in the same line-up seems counter-productive or even defensive, Mourinho could help bring back that solidity that was sorely lacking from Spurs last season – only Chelsea and Burnley conceded more than their 47 Premier League goals out of the top ten.

The teams that Mourinho has been successful with, particularly at the likes of Chelsea and Inter, have had a formidable spine to them – think back to players like Claude Makelele, Michael Essien and Esteban Cambiasso to name but a few. Playing Hojbjerg and McKennie together would offer greater protection to the Spurs back-line and help strike fear into the rest of the Premier League.

Nobody would feel comfortable playing against a duo that hunt down every possession, and get the ball moving up the pitch as quickly as possible. It has all the hallmarks of being a potentially great midfield partnership.

Edgeley Park

Key Information about Edgeley Park

Edgeley Park is the home of National League side Stockport County, and it has been since 1902. The Cheshire based stadium holds almost 11,000 spectators and it was shared with Rugby Union club Sale Sharks between 2003-12.

In 2015, Stockport Council purchased the stadium for £2m, and leased it back to the club in order to block redevelopment and stop it from being demolished.

A history of Edgeley Park

Up until 1902, Stockport County had played all of their home matches at Green Lane in Heaton Norris. Throughout history, Edgeley Park has seen many greats play at the historic ground, including George Best, Bobby Moore, and Kevin Keegan. The first Main Stand was built in 1913, and it held an increased 500 seats.

Ten years later, a wooden terrace was built at the Cheadle End and in 1927 the Popular Side was reconstructed before it was extended further back to hold 16,000 spectators in 1934. Just one year after this expansion, the main stand was burnt down after the timber caught fire, though it was rebuilt a year later.

Following the Bradford City stadium fire in 1985, all wooden structures were removed from the stadium. The stadium was originally built in 1901 for Rugby League club Stockport RFC, though Stockport County moved there following the expansion of their fan base due to their entrance into the Football League two years earlier.

The longest ever football match recorded in history took place at Edgeley Park on March 30, 1946. The Division Three North Cup replay took place between Stockport County and Doncaster Rovers and it lasted an extraordinary three hours and 23 minutes. The replay commenced after the first game ended 2-2, and it was not in anyone’s minds that it would last a remarkable 203 minutes.

The replay was tied once more at 2-2 after 90 minutes, therefore the tie went to extra time; however, 30 minutes were not enough with neither team able to score during that period. Penalty shootouts were not part of the game back during the wartime so the only solution was to play-to-win until one team finally would score.

The record attendance at Edgeley Park is a massive 27,833 when Liverpool visited Stockport County in the fifth round of the 1950 FA Cup. The National League ground has four main stands; the Danny Bergara Stand, Cheadle End, Popular Side, and Railway End which is the usual home of away supporters. In the summer of 2015, Edgeley Park was passed into the ownership of Stockport Council who decided to rent the ground back to the football club on a commercial basis.

Tickets to Watch Stockport County at Edgeley Park

All Stockport County tickets are available to purchase online at Eventbrite and not through the phone. Single matchday tickets range from £5-15, and children typically can attend for free. If you are interested in season tickets, one can be purchased from £240 if you are early enough, though they are usually priced at around £300 for Adults.

Arsenal transfer rumours: Gunners want £41m Joelson Fernandes, dubbed ‘new Ronaldo’

According to the latest reports from the Portuguese outlet A Bola, Arsenal are pushing for the transfer of Sporting Lisbon’s 17-year-old sensation, Joelson Fernandes.

The youngster also has a release clause that’s apparently worth €45m (£41m) and the Gunners would activate that to bring him to the Emirates soon.

In fact, the same report states that Arsenal’s top brass will fly over to Portugal between Monday and Tuesday in order to close out the deal. And precisely because of that, Fernandes has been excluded from the squad for the derby against Benfica. If all of that adds up, it seems that Mikel Arteta could be getting a brand new wonderkind sooner rather than later to go along other potential acquisitions in the summer.

Fernandes has scored five goals in 28 games during his breakout season and since he shares a similar path through Sporting’s academy to his fellow countryman Cristiano Ronaldo, he has already been dubbed the ‘new Ronaldo’ by the media. Of course, such a comparison is surely flattering but it also puts a lot of pressure on his young shoulders.

Speaking about the comparisons and the transfer, he said, as quoted by Express: “It is true that being compared to these players puts a little extra pressure on me. I try to follow their example and play the best I can in each game. I did not look at that alleged interest very much, I am happy where I am and fighting to achieve my dream, which is to play for Sporting’s first team”

Either way, it seems he won’t be at Sporting for much longer and could instead don the Gunners’ colours in the near future.

Verdict

A Bola mention that Sporting were initially asking for a sum around €100m (£90.4m) and then €80m (£72.3m), suggesting they truly value the 17-year-old a lot.  However, with the release clause, Arsenal could very well get a huge discount and still land one of the players of tomorrow.

He may be extremely young but if groomed properly, something Arteta should definitely be able to do, the Gunners could be looking at a huge, huge prospect for the squad in the near future.

Leeds have to be laughing about getting £10m for Clarke

Leeds United have had their fair share of bad luck when it comes to selling players over the years.

We’ve already been over how it looks like they were badly ripped off when selling Pontus Jansson, and only getting £6m for Lewis Cook looks like a pretty terrible deal, especially when you consider that the midfielder has gone on to be capped by England.

However, despite their poor track record when it comes to selling players, the Whites did seem to get one right last summer.

Indeed, Leeds have every right to be buzzing about their decision to sell Jack Clarke to Tottenham for £10m.

The teenager had enjoyed just one season at Leeds before being snapped up by the Premier League giants, and that season wasn’t even all that amazing, starting just four games and contributing to only four goals.

Not only did they get £10m for him, but they also were able to loan him straight back, but the strength of their side meant that he played as few as 19 minutes upon his return.

Missing football!? There’s still plenty of Leeds discussion going on in the Vital Leeds Forum! Click here to get involved!

Understandably, Spurs recalled him in January only to loan him out again, but it’s been more of the same for the winger since joining QPR as he’s still yet to start a game for the west London outfit.

Not only has he played very little, he’s made next to no impact at either Leeds or QPR, failing to score or assist, while his dribbles per game is down at just 0.8 per game, not great for a man whose ability to beat a man has been highlighted as one of his best attributes.

It’s not been nice to see the teenager falter this season, but from a Leeds point of view, they must be laughing all the way to the bank after netting £10m for a player who can’t even get into a QPR team battling it out in the bottom half of the Championship.

In other news, Leeds still need to replace this player who departed in 2019.

Juventus and Manchester United both eyeing deals for Neymar

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

It seems that Neymar Junior is once again looking likely to be the main attraction come the opening of the transfer window.

According to new reports coming from Le Parisien (via The Sun), the Brazilian still wants out of the French club and there is no shortage of suitors just waiting around to land his signature.

Of course, Barcelona are still in the pole position to bring him back to Catalonia but both Juventus and Manchester United have reportedly shown interest as well.

This is reinforced by the fact that Thomas Tuchel, Paris Saint-Germain’s manager, is seemingly considering dropping the asking price of €300m (£253m) to around €180m (£151.5m).

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men might be reaching for the stars with that transfer but it’s difficult to argue against it, especially considering the Red Devils could do with a boost.

The 2019/20 season has so far not really been kind to United and even though their recent triumphs over Man City and Spurs do bring some hope to the table, they are still far from where they would like to be.

Neymar’s presence in their squad could help restore that long-lost pedigree and bring them back on track.

Not to mention that they are currently – for all of their promising talents in the squad – almost devoid of any real household names.

Of course, Paul Pogba is one but the Frenchman has been absent of late and tipped to leave the club sooner rather than later, and adding someone who could potentially fill that void does sound like a good idea.

Neymar is the type of player who could bring excitement and fire back to Old Trafford, sending a stark message to their Premier League rivals in the process.

But the same can be said for Juventus and seeing how they were the ones that managed to snatch Cristiano Ronaldo from Real Madrid, their interest in the Brazilian doesn’t seem like that big of a stretch.

No clues: Can you name the Man Utd result purely based on these images? Give it a go now…

And speaking of their Portuguese star, Ronaldo has been somewhat underperforming over in Turin – at least for his ridiculously high standards – and has only managed to bag eight goals in 17 games across all competitions in 2019/20 and 36 in 60 since arriving at Juventus.

Of course, they have won the league title with him in the side but they managed that for numerous consecutive years even before his arrival.

Despite him being the most expensive purchase in the club’s history, it still feels like he’s not giving them as much as he should or could be.

That’s exactly where Neymar comes in as the Brazilian could be exactly what Ronaldo was supposed to be for the Bianconeri.

Even if the asking price has been decreased he would still most likely eclipse their current transfer record – but he could be well worth it.

After all, we’re talking about a player who has bagged 57 goals and 30 assists in just 67 games for the French giants, while he also managed to score 105 goals and 76 assists in 186 games for Barcelona.

Needless to say, he is still one of the biggest names in world football and maybe he could be the one to finally give Maurizio Sarri’s team the push they need on their way to European glory.

But first, they will have to beat the likes of Barcelona and Man United in this race.

Sunderland’s Will Grigg could be dropped soon if his poor form continues

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

With fans beginning to grow impatient it is important that Sunderland get back to winning ways against Gillingham in the FA Cup.

Phil Parkinson may have lost four of his first six games but he has enjoyed managing at home, in the main, and if the Black Cats can replicate the dominance they showed against Tranmere and Southend previously – with 17 and 18 shots against those teams respectively, they should progress.

Although they had a similar amount of shots in the two games, the scorelines reflected a much different story, and Parkinson’s side will have to get back to the clinical display they showed against Rovers if they are to pick up their form.

Those matches show that it is not really a question of creating chances, but finishing them. That’s where Will Grigg comes into play.

The Northern Ireland international has been a disappointment since his £4m January move with only seven goals in 41 games, and therefore he may have to start performing soon if he wants to retain his place in the side, starting on Sunday.

Watch League 1 Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Coming up against Max Ehmer promises to be a tough challenge, though, considering the defender’s form this season.

As per WhoScored, he has a good command of the defensive final third, with 5.3 aerial duels won per game and 4.6 clearances.

He will attempt to make life difficult for Grigg by marking him out of the game, and since the Northern Irishman feeds off the service from his teammates, he may struggle to get scoring opportunities.

The striker’s rate of key passes and successful dribbles underline that fact he is unable to create chances for himself, and shows he hasn’t been of much use to his team in terms of general play.

That means when he isn’t scoring – which he hasn’t been – he is arguably a bit of a hindrance to the attack, and Parkinson may consider dropping him and playing Chris Maguire further forward, as he has scored five goals and made 1.7 key passes per game.

Gillingham have conceded 20 league goals this term as well, so are shaky at the back, and if Grigg can escape the grasp of Ehmer he may be able to get back on the scoresheet.
