Moyes offers West Ham transfer update

Speaking to the press, via football.london, West Ham United boss David Moyes has dropped another transfer update as his side pursue a striker signing in January – going on to confirm that the Hammers have ‘put offers in’ for ‘two or three’ targets.

The Scotsman has been forthcoming of GSB’s plans to bring in a replacement for club record signing Sebastien Haller even though he would apparently prefer to keep it private – but with so many players being spoken to, and agents in working, this is proving more and more difficult (ExWHUemployee).

In this update on a striker search, Moyes has confirmed that the club have ‘put offers in’ for two or three targets whilst revealing the club have backed him wherever possible.

Moyes drops striker update

Moyes also states that he ‘certainly’ wants to bring in a new forward, but he is ‘mindful’ of the financial situations surrounding other clubs and wishes to approach potential transfers with caution.

“We see the NHS has been struggling, we so many difficulties outside of football, we love football, and do I want a top striker? I certainly do,” explained Moyes via football.london.

“I really do to help us. But I am also mindful that football clubs, a lot of them are on the verge of going bust and I have got to make sure that I do things correctly.

“But I have got to say the board has definitely tried to support me and back me in getting players in.

“We have probably tried for two or three, we have put offers in for two or three or sort of tried to see if it can happen. I am hoping we can add to the squad.”

Transfer Tavern take

Judging by this admission, Moyes remains optimistic in potentially bringing a striker to east London, but is also approaching any business with an open mind given the nature of football at this present moment.

One enticing reveal could be that the board have been attempting to back Moyes, all while he confirms offers have been made, but it remains to be seen whether they do manage to find a Haller replacement this month.

Celtic predicted XI to face Sparta Prague in Europa League

Celtic will be hoping to gain some ground in the Europa League this evening over bottom-of-the-table Sparta Prague. The Hoops haven’t had the best start to their run so they will be hoping that this will be a golden chance to resurrect their recent streak of rocky form.

Neil Lennon has been changing up his starting lineups a lot over the past few weeks and whilst some have fallen flat on their face, others have started showing glimpses of promise. Particularly with Odsonne Edouard back in action, Celtic could be in with a good chance of grabbing three points tonight.

Football FanCast has predicted how the Hoops will set up to face Sparta Prague this evening…

With Scott Bain proving to be a much better option between the sticks than Vasilis Barkas, Lennon would be foolish to change things up now. The £7.6k per-week Scotsman had a solid game against Aberdeen in the Scottish Cup last time out and the clean sheet will give him motivation to produce another winning performance.

A change in defence could be warranted though, with Nir Bitton currently filling in for the injured Kristoffer Ajer. However, Shane Duffy was disappointing against Lille in Celtic’s previous Europa League clash, making just 23 accurate passes and giving away a penalty (via Sofascore).

For this reason, fans could see the return of Hatem Abd Elhamed, who was a key figure this season until he was sidelined due to coronavirus.

With Ryan Christie in fine form at the moment, he will undoubtedly start opposite Mohamed Elyounoussi in the wide areas. The two could prove to be lethal to the opposition as they continue to work together. Lennon appears to have dropped the idea of a double strike force in his attack and has been trying out one lone target-man supported by three others.

Albian Ajeti could get the nod after being deployed up front on several occasions recently. His support just behind Edouard could help the Frenchman find his form after also being out of action. Bagging a win will put the Hoops back into a winning streak, with Motherwell awaiting them on Sunday.

Spurs summer signing Sergio Reguilon has been an unsung hero

Pretty much all of Tottenham Hotspur’s summer signings have already played their part this season, which only emphasises just how well Daniel Levy and co conducted their transfer business.

The north London outfit sit top of the Premier League standings after ten matches and look to be genuine contenders to rival the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool for the title.

And whilst that has largely been down to the goalscoring exploits of Harry Kane and Heung-min Son, the other areas of the pitch cannot be ignored. After all, they have also conceded the least amount of goals – just nine.

Supporters will be quick to throw the crown to £15m bargain Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, who has added a much-needed anchor-like presence in the heart of midfield. Something that Spurs have long lacked since the exit of Mousa Dembele.

The 25-year-old Dane has averaged a whopping 3.1 tackles, 1.8 clearances and 3.7 long balls per game, via WhoScored. By comparison, throughout the entirety of last season, the only midfielder to average anywhere near that was Giovani Lo Celso with 1.8 tackles per match.

However, the impressive form of fellow arrival Sergio Reguilon has gone under the radar somewhat, especially tactically.

Spurs boss Jose Mourinho likes balance in his full-backs, in the sense that one is more attacking than the other, and that’s exactly what Reguilon has done since joining from Real Madrid alongside Gareth Bale.

The majority of their attacks come from his side of the pitch (38%), which results in more shots coming from this side and through the middle too (88%), via WhoScored. This is because the Spaniard’s presence allows Son the freedom to cut inside and act as a second striker, hence his juicy returns thus far.

Reguilon is far more attack-minded than Ben Davies having averaged 1.3 key passes per game to the Welshman’s 0.3, as per WhoScored.

The €70m-rated (£63.5m) dynamo is even doing his fair share defensively, managing 1.7 tackles and 2.3 clearances per match.

It’s no wonder “everyone loves” him, according to Football.London’s Alasdair Gold.

Either way, he deserves far more credit – at least as much as Hojbjerg, if not more, as he is certainly proving to be one of Mourinho’s unsung heroes on that left flank.

Levy pulled a masterstroke with his addition.

Leeds transfer news: £10m bid for Rodrigo De Paul alternative Erick Pulgar

According to fresh reports out of Italy, Leeds United have tabled an offer for a new midfield target and it’s not Rodrigo De Paul…

What’s the word?

La Nazione (via Sport Witness) claim that the Yorkshire giants have launched a £10m bid to sign Fiorentina anchorman Erick Pulgar despite the Serie A outfit viewing him as unsellable this summer.

It’s thought that Premier League rivals West Ham United were in for him last month and now Marcelo Bielsa’s side are the latest name to be keen.

It also appears that £10m won’t be enough to sway La Viola into a sale but that could soon change if their offer improves.

De Paul alternative?

One of the ongoing sagas up at Elland Road is surrounding Udinese midfielder Rodrigo De Paul with Mirror journalist David Anderson suggesting that the Whites are unwilling to meet his £36.5m asking price.

So a move for Pulgar could very much be a hint towards Victor Orta and co looking at other alternatives and the 26-year-old Chilean international could certainly make a good case.

In the past, Calciomercato have likened his playing style to that of fellow countryman Arturo Vidal due to his combative tough-tackling abilities.

Per WhoScored, Pulgar delivered seven goals and six assists whilst averaging 2.2 key passes, two tackles and 0.9 shots per game, which is also very much in a similar mould to De Paul himself.

It’s rare to find a midfield powerhouse who is also a hugely underrated creative outlet. Last season, he created as many chances as Bayern Munich’s Thomas Muller and more than the likes of James Maddison, Emi Buendia and Willian.

With Transfermarkt valuing him at £13.5m, he could be quite the steal in comparison to De Paul.

Brighton & Hove Albion: Monchu remains a transfer target for Seagulls amid Juventus interest

Brighton continue to show an interest in signing Barcelona prospect Monchu, although they face some stern competition in the race for his signature.

The Sunday Mirror reported [via Sussex Live] that the Seagulls are joined by West Ham and Juventus in their pursuit of the 20-year-old, with the La Liga trio of Real Sociedad, Valencia and Real Betis also though to be interested.

According to Sussex Live, the Serie A champions have already had a bid of £18m plus add-ons rejected by the Camp Nou club, who would be open to a loan move for him on the basis that the club taking him would pay his wages in full and agree to having an option to buy him for £36m when the loan deal expires.

Monchu, who according to The Sunday Mirror [via Sussex Live] has drawn comparisons with ex-Barcelona legend Xavi for his playing style, made his competitive debut for the Catalan club with a late substitute appearance in their Champions League win over Napoli on Saturday night. He had also been on the bench for several of their post-lockdown La Liga matches.

He scored 10 goals in 29 games for Barcelona’s B team as they narrowly missed out on promotion to the second tier of the Spanish football pyramid, losing in the play-off final to Sabadell.

It is an indication of how highly he is rated at Camp Nou that the club want to tie him down to a new four-year contract, although his lack of first team opportunities has reportedly prompted him to seek a move elsewhere. [via Sussex Live]

A central midfielder with an eye for goal, as well as being capable of playing in a defensive midfield role, Monchu could give Brighton a greater scoring threat from the middle of the park if he were to end up at the Amex Stadium – the Seagulls’ central midfield quartet of Aaron Mooy, Davy Propper, Yves Bissouma and Dale Stephens managed a paltry four goals between them last season.

Given his goal-scoring abilities and Barcelona’s desire to keep him at the club, Monchu certainly seems like he would be quite a coup for Brighton if they can land him.

However, with the La Liga side insisting on some stringent loan clauses, including that £36m option to buy, the Seagulls’ chances of signing him could be fanciful, particularly with Premier League clubs set to be hamstrung financially by the consequences of the global pandemic.

Also, with perennial Serie A champions Juventus lurking, the youngster could be tempted to the highly successful Turin outfit rather than taking the challenge of chasing Premier League survival at Brighton.
