Leeds’ decision to move Stuart Dallas into midfield not paying off

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

He might come across as a Swiss Army Knife, but it looks like he might be missing a couple of tools.

Given the recent injuries to Liam Cooper and Jamie Shackleton, there has had to be a couple of tweaks to the team setup. As a result of these, Stuart Dallas has been moved out of his right-back position that he started off the season in and been shifted into a central midfield role instead.

Dallas comes across as a great utility player, someone who can fit into a number of different positions given the amount he’s had to play throughout his career. But as a central midfielder, he’s just not cutting the mustard.

On the chalkboard

Dallas has always been more effective out wide, whether that be as a winger or a full-back. In fact, if you look at where his goals involvements have come when he’s been playing for Leeds, all of his assists have come when he was playing out on the left-wing, and all of his goals have come from the flanks.

Whilst he may be cut out to fill in multiple positions on the pitch, he just isn’t creative enough when it comes to playing central midfield, and that is holding himself and Leeds back.

He averages a 74.3% pass completion rate through his career, when you compare that to the other midfielders like Adam Forshaw and Mateusz Klich, both of them are pushing north of 80%.

For him to play in the middle, the £1.8m-rated utility man needs to be far more careful in possession.

The injuries to Cooper and Shackleton should have been a chance for Marcelo Bielsa to try out some new players in their respective roles.

However, he should have gone for players who are more natural in those spots, like bringing young Mateusz Bogusz or Robbie Gotts into midfield, rather than shoe-horning someone who just isn’t effective there.

Hopefully this Dallas experiment won’t be carrying on much longer, or it could end up with Leeds dropping more than the five points they have already from Millwall and Preston.

Charlton: Ben Purrington’s return from injury comes at just the right time

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Injury News series, which considers the impact of the latest updates on players’ fitness.

Speaking to London News Online, Lee Bowyer confirmed that he will have three key players back fit for this weekend’s game against Derby.

Ben Purrington, Tomer Hemed and Beram Kayal have all seemingly recovered from their respective issues, and Bowyer is expecting them to be back available.

The 42-year-old specifically spoke about Purrington’s return, saying: “It’s really important that Ben is back because that left-back position is where we are short.”

His return might be even more important, as Derby have a real danger-man lining up on Purrington’s side…

Who is it?

Martyn Waghorn.

The Derby forward is the Rams’ top scorer in the Championship this season with four goals to his name in ten starts, and has lined up on the right flank five times already this season – his last league start came on the right wing against Barnsley.

Waghorn is hardly the quickest player in the Championship, but what Purrington must be aware of is his knack of arriving in the box and taking up good goalscoring positions – the 23-year-old must be aware of the No.9’s whereabouts at all times.

Significance of Purrington’s return

Behind Purrington, Bowyer has just one other option at left-back in Lewis Page.

Unfortunately for Charlton and Page himself, the 23-year-old is yet to make an appearance this season as he struggles to stay fit.

When Purrington was out against Fulham, Bowyer opted for midfielder Jake Forster-Caskey at left wing-back, where he allowed Ivan Cavaleiro to cut in from the right flank and rifle home to find a second-half equaliser for the Cottagers – the ease with which the on-loan Wolves forward waltzed inside his man was concerning.

As a result, it is key for Charlton to have Purrington back fit and ready to perform, as Waghorn will certainly be a man to keep an eye on if his form so far this season is anything to go by.

Liverpool fans feel Joel Matip’s absence after conceding three vs Red Bull Salzburg

Joel Matip has been a standout performer for Liverpool this season with an average Whoscored rating of 7.62 in the Premier League and his absence was noticeable in the Reds’ first match since his injury, as they conceded three at home to Red Bull Salzburg.

In recent times he has made the position alongside Virgil van Dijk his own, and his man of the match award against Chelsea combined with the praise he has received from fans underlines how well he has been playing.

Jurgen Klopp has in recent matches shown a preference for the Cameroon international, whom he once described as an “incredible talent”, despite Joe Gomez starting in the first competitive fixture of the season against Norwich at Anfield.

Liverpool have conceded only four goals from the six Premier League games in which Matip and van Dijk have played, yet conceded almost the same amount in one match upon Gomez’s return to the team against Red Bull Salzburg, leading some fans to wish they had the former Schalke man back fit.

Matip’s absence was noticed by several fans on Wednesday night, and some believe the defensive nightmare would have been avoided with him in the side, as the reactions below show.

Crystal Palace should’ve started Christian Benteke instead of Townsend vs Spurs

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Off the Bench series, which places in-game managerial decisions and squad selections under FFC’s microscope.

There wasn’t much Roy Hodgson could’ve done amidst a first-half Tottenham onslaught on Saturday.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men just kept coming, attacking the Crystal Palace backline at will and scoring at almost every given opportunity for the first 45 minutes, going into the dressing room 4-0 up at the break.

The former England manager isn’t known for his wise use of substitutions – the best way to back that up is by reading The Times’ article from last year on Hodgson’s ill-advised use of his bench.

Given that nugget of information, you wouldn’t have expected the 72-year-old to make a shrewd first-half substitution to try and change things – as a result of that, he should have made a slight change to his starting XI instead in an attempt to help his side get up the pitch.

Who should’ve started?

It would have been harsh to drop Jordan Ayew given his form of late – the Ghanaian had two goals in two before the trip to Spurs – so he deserved to start.

One man who perhaps should have dropped out of the eleven, however, was Andros Townsend. The England international had started the last two games prior to Saturday’s match on the bench, and only made his way into the XI after an injury to James McArthur.

Townsend didn’t have a single shot on goal, nor did he complete a key pass in his 84 minutes on the field, while he also had four unsuccessful touches.

In stark contrast, Belgium international Benteke played the last 20 minutes and made an impact, taking two shots, making two key passes and winning two aerial duels.

How would Benteke have helped out from the start?

It is that last statistic that would’ve helped ease the pressure on the south Londoners. Benteke is no stranger to winning an aerial duel or two – he is currently 11th in the league for aerials won, per WhoScored – and with Palace struggling to find a way out of Spurs’ relentless attacking play, a target man to hit would’ve been helpful.

Ayew has been excellent of late, but he is no player of the sort and struggled to hold the ball up and get it to a teammate against Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld – he won six aerial duels in fairness, but there weren’t enough of his fellow Palace players around him.

Benteke’s aerial presence alongside the Ghanaian would have helped the likes of Gary Cahill and Mamadou Sakho play the ball out without inviting pressure onto the midfielders, and it would also have made life easier for Wilfried Zaha in terms of getting into the game via the forward’s knock-downs.

Ayew is much better suited to life under Hodgson in a system less focused on crossing the ball, but forgetting goalscoring for a second, Benteke should have started ahead of Townsend purely for pressure-relieving reasons.

Arsenal fans fume as Jeff Reine-Adelaide edges towards big-money Lyon move

[ad_pod ]

The average English football fan will not remember much of Jeff Reine-Adelaide.

The former Arsenal youngster made just eight appearances for the Gunners, none of which came in the Premier League.

In the end, the 21-year-old signed for Angers for just £1.44m last summer after a six-month spell with the Ligue 1 outfit.

His career has picked up since then, though. He played 35 times in France’s top tier last term, scoring three goals and registering three assists, and he has hit the ground running this campaign after notching a goal and an assist on the first matchday of the French season.

Thanks to his performances, Lyon have noticed him, and a deal has been agreed, with some outlets reporting an initial fee of €25m (£23.2m) plus bonuses.

Gunners fans have taken notice of the developments, and they are unhappy with what they see as bad business by the Arsenal hierarchy in letting a player go who is now worth a considerable sum. They have been commenting on the news of his impending transfer on Twitter, and you can see some of the best reactions below…

Leeds should experiment with Roofe and Bamford, says Whelan

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Speaking to Football Insider, Noel Whelan has urged Leeds to experiment with two of their forward players heading into the new season.

What’s he said?

As Leeds embark on their mini pre-season tour of Australia, two members of the squad who could find themselves vying for the same spot in Marcelo Bielsa’s side are Kemar Roofe and Patrick Bamford.

The former has been linked with a move away but is among the travelling party for pre-season despite the likes of Helder Costa and Jack Clarke missing out.

Both Roofe and Bamford started together against York in the Whites’ friendly last week and it’s a tactic that has sparked Whelan into urging Leeds to experiment with the pair.

Talking to Football Insider, he revealed how they could do it, commenting:

“This is where you experiment, isn’t it? We didn’t see it much last season because of injuries to the two of them.

“This is where you figure out what you’re going to play, what formation. I very much doubt he’s going to change his thinking but can you put Kemar Roofe in a number 10? That’s something worth thinking about, can he play behind Bamford and play off him?”

Can they do it?

Last season Leeds were extremely unfortunate to lose Bamford for such a lengthy period of time. Per Transfermarkt, he missed 22 games through injury whilst Roofe was forced to sit on the treatment table for six matches too.

As a result, the pair of them failed to actually play alongside each other on too many occasions.

Yet, if Leeds can get both of them fit and firing properly next term it will without a doubt ensure they have a better chance of achieving promotion.

In 2018/19, Tyler Roberts and Mateusz Klich were preferred behind the striker but, as Whelan says, this is the ideal time to now experiment with what they’ve got.

Watch Leeds United Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

The fact only 16 squad members have travelled to Australia means there should be a greater license to play the pair of them together, and experimenting with Roofe in behind Bamford could be on the cards given Klich hasn’t travelled.

It could also prepare them for a potential departure if the Pole joins Burnley, a club he was the subject of interest from over the weekend.

Roofe scored 15 goals last term, cementing himself as one of the biggest threats in the side.

Moving him from his favoured position up front could seem foolish on paper, but if it gets both him and Bamford scoring at the same time, it could be game-changing for Bielsa.

Everton would be mad to spend £25m on Manchester United flop Marcos Rojo

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to talkSPORT journalist Alex Crook, Marcos Rojo is on his way to Finch Farm ahead of a £25m move from Manchester United to Everton.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the Toffees are in desperate need of a centre-back with only Yerry Mina and Michael Keane currently available to Marco Silva as senior options.

Phil Jagielka has left the club, whilst the Merseysiders were unsuccessful in bringing last season’s loan hero Kurt Zouma back to the club on a permanent basis from Chelsea – Mason Holgate, who was on loan at West Brom last term, can also play at centre-back if need be.

Rojo is seemingly surplus to requirements at Old Trafford after United completed the £85m signing of Harry Maguire from Leicester, leaving Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with Chris Smalling, Victor Lindelof, Phil Jones and the new boy as options at centre-back along with Rojo – considering the Red Devils play with two centre-backs, that department seems bloated.

Everton would be mad to pay that much

£25m for Rojo? On the basis of what, exactly?

The Argentina international missed a whopping 19 games through injury last term, and made just five appearances for United in the Premier League.

Before last season, he only made nine appearances as a result of more injury issues that led to the 29-year-old missing a quite ridiculous 34 games with fitness issues.

Additionally, at 29 years of age, does the former Sporting Lisbon centre-back represents good value or a good long-term investment by the Toffees? No.

Check out some amazing tekkers in the video below…

Marcel Brands outlined the club’s plans to invest ‘big’ money in young players between the age of 20-25/26, so to make such an expensive swoop for a player who is nearing his thirties and can’t even guarantee that he’ll be fit to play consistently seems like a bizarre move.

Yes, the Toffees are desperate for centre-back additions, but surely they can’t be this desperate?
