MLS franchise have ambitious plans for the futureState-of-the-art ground forms part of that projectArgentine icon due to grace eye-catching venue

WHAT HAPPENED?

The impressive structure will be built close to Miami International Airport, with the MLS outfit moving out of Fort Lauderdale – where they have been based at DRV PNK Stadium since 2020. David Beckham and the club’s board have never made any secret of their desire to construct a state-of-the-art facility that better aligns with the franchise’s long-term ambition.

Plans for the stadium are mirrored by Messi’s current contract, which runs until 2025, but he has the option for a 12-month extension beyond that point and is expected to grace the new ground. Jorge Mas, Inter Miami’s managing owner, has told the club’s : “With Inter Miami, my family set out to build something truly transformational. In just four years we have changed the perception worldwide of American soccer. As we commence construction of Miami Freedom Park that same vision guides us. In creating a multi-faceted space we will set a new standard of what sport complexes can be. We look forward to delivering a food and entertainment destination for families to enjoy year-round. I can’t wait to welcome our fans to our state-of-the-art stadium and hear the chants as Messi and your Inter Miami players take the pitch for the first time in 2025.”

AND WHAT'S MORE

Inter Miami’s new stadium will be based in a 58-acre public park which includes soccer and youth athletic fields to be used by the local community. It will also house a full range of entertainment and commercial offerings – including office space, a hotel, shops and restaurants. Construction crews are already on site, with development veteran Devon McCorkle leading the project. He has said: “The level of attention and the influx of inquiries we are receiving have been incredible, a testament to the positive impact of Lionel Messi on Inter Miami CF and the City of Miami. Everyone wants to be part of what we’re creating, a new entertainment district that will be the centerpiece of family activities and experiences in Miami. We are in discussions with stadium sponsors, hotel brands, major attractions operators, restaurant groups, cultural institutions and many other exciting potential partners. We will deliver an incredible home for them at Miami Freedom Park.”

O resumo do desta quinta-feira

Gosto do Michel desde a época dele no Atlético Goianiense.

Muitos clubes buscando a mesma coisa.

Zampa learning to adjust to local conditions

Australia legspinner Adam Zampa said the first breakthrough helped him relax as he adjusted his game for Asian conditions

Andrew Fidel Fernando in Bangalore 21-Mar-2016Australia legspinner Adam Zampa says his first T20I wicket was a breakthrough that got “a monkey off my back” as he continues adjusting his game for Asian conditions. After bowling just one over for three runs in Australia’s loss to New Zealand last Friday in Dharamsala, the 23-year-old received a Man-of-the-Match award for his four overs with the ball on Monday which claimed his three first T20 international wickets, for 23 runs against Bangladesh, in his fourth T20I.”The wickets in Australia don’t spin as much, and hitting the wickets over there is crucial,” Zampa said after Australia’s three-wicket win in Bangalore. “My plans haven’t changed as such, but the lengths that you bowl here, the players can hit it in different areas than they do in Australia. That’s something I’m trying to get used to quickly.”The ball sticks in the wicket a bit here, as we’ve seen tonight. It’s a little bit slow off the pitch and my first wicket was a pull shot hit to deep midwicket. In Australia that ball would probably skid on to leg stump, and it’s harder to play those shots. So the length that you bowl is crucial. You use changes of pace as well over here. Generally if you change your pace in Australia, you get smacked over your head.”Prior to making a move to South Australia for the start of the 2013-14 domestic season, Zampa’s early experiences learning his craft at state level came through the New South Wales team alongside Steven Smith under the captaincy of Steve O’Keefe. Smith has prioritised batting over his legspin in recent years, but Zampa said their shared past created an understanding between the two players.”I work really well with Steven. He’s been really good for my game since I was a young guy, so to have him standing there at cover all the time is really nice. I haven’t changed anything at all. My plans are pretty simple, and to have him there in the back of my ear to reassure me is nice.”Zampa defended the loss of four middle-order wickets in quick succession during his side’s successful chase of 157. Australia had been cruising at 119 for 3 – with 38 runs needed in 35 balls – but a mild rash of jitters appeared as David Warner, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Marsh and John Hastings all got out within 22 balls.Zampa said Australia had not spoken about running down the target quickly in order to improve their net run rate, though victory was achieved with nine balls to spare.”When you’re chasing those totals you can afford to take those risks at the end,” Zampa said. “That’s what we did, and it didn’t pay off for us tonight. The wicket was quite nice. It was holding up a little bit. We were a bit disappointed at giving away that many, but we were pretty confident with chasing it.”We still won with nine balls to spare, so it was a pretty convincing win, I think. But it’s also something that we’ve spoken about recently – the middle-overs batting. It’s something that we didn’t really do quite well against New Zealand, and we haven’t done it well tonight either. It’s something we will probably speak about.”

T20 leagues offer great learning opportunities – Thisara

Thisara Perera has said he likes playing T20 cricket around the world, but was also hoping to find a way back into Sri Lanka’s Test side

Arun Venugopal09-Apr-2015

“We can take advice from them, and we can change our thoughts,” Thisara Perera, on playing with other overseas players in the IPL•BCCI

Thisara Perera is the archetypal modern cricketer offering his services in leagues across the world. But, he didn’t play a single game in the Big Bash League last season; he was denied permission to take part, with Sanath Jayasuriya, the then Sri Lanka chief selector, questioning his work ethic. He didn’t get to play a single game either for Kings XI Punjab in IPL 2014, although he turned out for them five times in the Champions League T20 later that year, even playing the lead role in one of their wins. With captain George Bailey, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Johnson and David Miller nailing down the foreign-player slots, breaking into the first XI is going to be just as difficult this time around.Perera is also contracted with Guyana Amazon Warriors to play in the Caribbean Premier League this season. In 2012-13, he was a last-minute signing for Brisbane Heat, and was part of their victorious campaign. Perera said he liked playing outside Sri Lanka for the learning opportunities such leagues offered.”I think I play a lot of cricket inside the country and outside the country,” Perera told ESPNcricinfo. “In IPL, you can see a lot of foreign players and lot of captains and lot of coaches. I think that is main thing for us, you know, we can take advice from them, and we can change our thoughts.”Big Bash [is] also real competitive league. It’s not an easy wicket to play in Big Bash, Australia. I play a lot of domestic matches also, but the thing is they don’t have international players. That’s why I like to play outside the country because we can take good things, good thoughts [from others].”Perera admitted to favouring the shorter formats, but said he wanted to establish himself in Test cricket as well. “Actually my batting style and bowling style… I really like to play Twenty20 and 50-overs. [But] I [have] played only 7 [6] matches in Tests. I have to play another 20-30 matches because I like to play Test matches. Normally, my batting style is… I am the big-hitter. I am always hitting, hitting, hitting.”Such “hitting, hitting” style is making way for a more sustainable approach to batting, if Perera’s claims are anything to go by. “Right now, I am doing some bit of changing [to] my batting style. Now I am going to bat longer a little bit and not [try to] hit every ball and rotate the strike.”I like to bowl consistent length and my variation. Last year I didn’t do well in my bowling. I don’t know why and if this is a technical problem, but I am putting in hard work with my bowling.”In Sri Lanka I am working with Anusha Samarayanake and Champaka Ramanayake, my Sri Lankan bowling coaches. I really like to work with them.”Perera also credited his schoolmate and Sri Lanka captain, Angelo Mathews, with supporting his career “as a captain and as a friend.””We both played together in St. Joseph’s College. He is elder than me [by] two years,” Perera said. “I played under his captaincy at the Under-19 level, international level and school level also. I think we had good partnership as friends and brothers, you know.”Leading up to the World Cup, Mathews had said the seam-bowling allrounder was critical to the team’s balance, an assessment later endorsed by Mahela Jayawardene. Perera’s campaign, however, yielded only middling returns: he picked up six wickets from as many matches and scored 62 runs from four innings. In the IPL, Mathews, the captain of Delhi Daredevils, and Perera are in different camps.”I think it’s good for me he’s now our Sri Lankan team captain,” Perera said. “We work together a lot of times. I have to say he’s a good person, he’s a good captain and a good friend. And that’s why [we are] staying together.”Every time I make a mistake, he comes and tells me, ‘Thisara this isn’t good, you have to play like that, bowl like that.’ He gives me lot of advice as a captain and as a friend.”Perera said he was proud of having played alongside Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara. “We miss these two legends. I think without these two [it would be] really hard for batting department. Mahela he has retired already, Kumar is going to be… another two-three years or so, I don’t know actually.”There was also praise for George Bailey’s leadership at Kings XI. “I have worked with him [for a] couple of years and I think he knows how to handle his players and get the best out of every player. Team meeting and everything he really handles well,” Perera said.

Dalmiya set to return as BCCI president

Jagmohan Dalmiya is set to return as the BCCI president, more than a decade after he last held that position

Amol Karhadkar in Chennai01-Mar-2015Jagmohan Dalmiya is set to return as the BCCI president, more than a decade after he last held that position, at the board’s AGM in Chennai on Monday. The former BCCI and ICC president has emerged as a consensus candidate between the two rival factions of the board, led by the sidelined incumbent N Srinivasan, and the former BCCI and ICC president Sharad Pawar, but the real power struggle might be witnessed in the elections to the junior positions.Dalmiya, who is president of the Cricket Association of Bengal, filed his nomination papers with support from his own association, the National Cricket Club in Kolkata and the four other east zone associations. Since it is the east zone’s turn to nominate the president for the three-year term, Dalmiya wanted to ensure that a candidate from the zone – rather than an outsider parachuting in – held the post. He had been approached by Pawar’s faction to contest as a candidate from their group, while Srinivasan’s group had asked him to pick between the post of president and “chief patron”, a position that doesn’t currently exist in the BCCI.Nominations for other posts

Vice-presidents
Pawar group Ravi Savant (west), Jyotiraditya Scindia (central)
Srinivasan group G Gangaraju (south), TC Mathew (west), CK Khanna (central), Gautam Roy (east), ML Nehru (north)

BCCI elections in the past decade have been a mere formality with all nine elected officials – president, secretary, treasurer, joint secretary and five vice-presidents – unanimous choices. This year is likely to be different, with elections expected for the remaining three principal office bearers’ posts. The Pawar group has nominated Anurag Thakur for secretary, Rajiv Shukla for treasurer and Chetan Desai – secretary of the Goa Cricket Association secretary and so long allied to Srinivasan – for the post of joint secretary, while Srinivasan’s has nominated Sanjay Patel, Anirudh Chaudhry and Amitabh Chaudhary for the posts of secretary, treasurer and joint secretary, respectively. In fact the power-play could begin at the start of the AGM, over the question of who will chair the meeting. It’s a key position, especially if there are electoral contests, because the chairman of the AGM gets two votes: One as chairman and a casting vote in the case of a tie. If he already has voting rights, as the nominee of an association, that makes three votes. The BCCI rules say the president presides over the AGM but the Supreme Court has clarified that Srinivasan can be a participant at the AGM only to the extent of casting his vote, as and when required, for the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association. It is then up to the house to decide who presides over the meeting. It is understood that the Srinivasan camp is likely to request the meeting at the start to allow Shivlal Yadav to chair the meeting since he was appointed by the Supreme Court as the interim president for administrative affairs during Srinivasan’s exile. It will make the point that allowing anyone else to chair the meeting could invite more litigation.Depending on how the number game pans out overnight, the Pawar lobby will decide on whether to back or oppose Yadav as chairman of the meeting. It will be mindful of what happened in 2004, when Dalmiya used his casting vote in favour of his candidate for president Ranbir Singh Mahendra – against Pawar. The chairman will also have to pick the legitimate representative of two key member associations, Delhi and Districts Cricket Association and Baroda Cricket Association, which have deputed members of two warring factions for the AGM. The chair decides the legitimate representative and also has the right to bar the disputed member from the AGM.The BCA managing committee has deputed Rakesh Parikh for the AGM, while its president Samarjit Gaekwad has decided to exercise his right to attend the AGM. CK Khanna, the Srinivasan group’s vice-presidential candidate, has claimed to be the official DDCA representative. However, Sneh Bansal, the incumbent BCCI vice-president, has questioned Khanna’s nomination through a court order. Also likely to be present at the meeting are Mehmood Abdi and Amin Pathan, representatives of the warring RCA factions, who will look to present their respective cases to the men who run Indian cricket. The pre-AGM meetings are being held at the Park Sheraton in Chennai, where Srinivasan is in the thick of the action. He was involved in meetings through the day, first with the face of the opposition camp Anurag Thakur in the morning and then with all the voters. Those in the Pawar camp were also shuttling between the two wings of the hotel. Also in the hotel is Aditya Verma, the petitioner in the IPL corruption scandal court case that has effectively brought things to this pass. Srinivasan’s sidelining has come about as a result of Verma’s PIL, which has also led to the election itself being twice deferred.Once the meeting is done and dusted the new board will have to get down to business. High up on the agenda – the fate of selectors, who are appointed for a year’s term at each AGM. Saba Karim and Rajinder Hans, both of whom have been recalled midway through the World Cup, are in danger of being replaced.

Defensivamente, o time era soberano.

Foster remains in mint form

ScorecardJames Foster remained in mint form with the bat for Essex•PA Photos

An abrupt swing in momentum manufactured by an innings, dare it be suggested, of international quality, from James Foster might just prove to be the decisive juncture in an otherwise tight contest as Essex and Glamorgan have fought for supremacy. As Essex lost three for 14 after tea – slipping to 198 for 8 – they faced the proposition of surrendering a first innings deficit on the back of a limp batting performance. But, just as Glamorgan had done in the afternoon session, the home side managed to wrestle back the ascendancy through the efforts of a man who must regard his renewed mentions as a potential England wicketkeeper somewhat wryly. That Essex found themselves with a slight advantage at the close of the second day was down to their captain. As the majority of his teammates struggled to negate a slow surface and Glamorgan’s nagging attack, Foster exhibited all the qualities that have seen him talked about once more as a potential England call-up.While his expertise behind the stumps renders such theories wholly justifiable, his batting has got better with age. Having taken a dozen deliveries to get off the mark and further time to become fully acquainted with conditions, he quickened his tempo exquisitely. Alongside Mark Pettini, the pair halted Glamorgan’s post-lunch charge with a steady, if unspectacular, partnership. But when Pettini fell shortly after a half-century of his own, Foster was in danger of becoming stranded at the other end.At that juncture, he broke the shackles and flaunted his vast array of shots. He brought up his fifty with a picture-perfect inside-out shot over extra cover and with Reece Topley battling in nothing-gets-past-me mode at the other end, the pair put on 63 for the ninth wicket which saw Essex surpass Glamorgan’s first innings total of 244.

Peter Moores on Monty Panesar

“Monty has obviously had plenty of issues, probably more of them off the field than on it. He will discussed for Test selection, like anybody. He’s a quality bowler, who’s had a lot of exposure at Test level.
“I don’t know all the details of Essex’s decision [to drop him] yet, but it certainly doesn’t help his cause. We are looking for players to be out there, playing well and on the park. When we pick that team, everything will play its role from their ability to play and how they will commit to everybody else in it.” George Dobell

That Foster received a standing ovation from the Chelmsford faithful having attempted to hook Michael Hogan to the leg side boundary – falling fourteen runs short of a century – underlined the worth of an innings that broke the back of Glamorgan’s own assault.Had it not been for Foster’s exploits, the situation could have been a whole lot different. Having learnt the lessons from a morning session during which Jesse Ryder briefly entertained with a typically aggressive cameo, Glamorgan successfully altered their line and length in conditions that aided the seamers.Hogan produced a near unplayable delivery – one that pitched on leg, seamed and clipped the top off Ryder’s off stump – after Graham Wagg had rearranged Greg Smith’s furniture from around the wicket. As Monty Panesar watched proceedings from the pavilion, despite reports he was to play for the 2nd XI today, a fellow left-arm tweaker would have given him plenty of food for thought. Dean Cosker extracted turn and bounce from Wagg’s foot holes at the Hays Close End and was threatening throughout in a spell that had Pettini caught at leg slip and Tom Craddock lbw second ball. That, however, only brought Topley and Foster together to form an unlikely alliance. With a variable forecast for the final two days, the outcome of this game may yet be decided by the weather but in Foster, the Chelmsford crowd have a messiah of their own.
