Newcastle delighted with impact of Ayoze Perez in Sunday’s draw

Newcastle United earned an impressive point away to Southampton on Sunday in a thrilling encounter that proved to be one of the highlights of the English Premier League weekend.

The Magpies, in confident mood, twice took the lead against the home side and while they were ultimately pegged back by a Manolo Gabbiadini double, it was undoubtedly a smashing result for Rafa Benitez’s side.

Isaac Hayden fired home in the first half, exploiting a slow Fraser Forster to send the away fans into raptures.

Celebrations in the away end were again ignited just seconds after Southampton’s first equaliser, when Ayoze Perez fired past Forster to put Newcastle back in the driving seat.

It was Perez’s first goal of the season and came at a time Magpies fans were beginning to lose faith in his ability to be an effective top-flight attacker.

He’s been much criticised this term but perhaps his effort on Sunday can be the basis for an extended run of form.

Fans were delighted with his overall contribution and took to Twitter to share their thoughts on his performance…

ICONS of Football 2017: Michael Carrick

The vice-captain of Manchester United is as intelligent and as poised as they come.

Carrick’s extraordinary footballing IQ, brilliant positioning and majestic ball distribution ability is the benchmark for any young midfielder. Unlike most deep-lying midfielders, Carrick relies on his intangible, mental attributes perhaps even more so than his physical abilities.

He will be the first to admit that he is not the fastest or strongest man on the pitch (although he is certainly no slouch at the latter), but his capacity to read the game and anticipate where his next pass will go before the ball even gets to his feet, has allowed him to consistently get the better of his opponents.

Carrick began his career in the West Ham Youth Academy in 1997. After several loan spells he secured a spot in the first team and in 2004 completed a transfer to Tottenham.

After a brief stint in North London in 2006, Carrick moved to Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United in a deal reportedly worth £18million. From the out-set Carrick was a regular starter. He quickly proved himself to be a crucial part of Ferguson’s formula for success. Carrick’s mastery for maintaining possession and dictating the tempo of football matches proved to be invaluable for United. Through Carrick’s adept ability to control the centre of the pitch, Manchester United were able to gradually wear down opposing defences.

Carrick’s flexibility was also integral in United’s success. His adeptness in all areas of the midfield are a dream for any manager. He even played several games as an emergency centre back for Ferguson, David Moyes and Louis van Gaal.

It is no surprise that United won the Premier League in each of Carrick’s first three seasons at Old Trafford (2006-2007, 2007-2008 and 2008-2009). Carrick even lead United to a Champions League title in 2008, playing all 120 minutes of the final and converting from the spot in the penalty shootout.

Michael Carrick has overcome an incredible amount to carve out a successful career. Since his early youth days, he has been plagued by some frustrating injuries. Carrick’s relentless nature has allowed him to overcome all his setbacks and return stronger each time.

Carrick is currently in his 11th season at Man United. During his time at the club he has helped lead United to five premier league titles, six FA Community shields and an FA Cup last season. It has just been announced that a testimonial game will be held this summer to honour all that he has done for the club.

Carrick, the epitome of a professional, on and off the pitch, is often seen as the blueprint of the modern, English holding midfielder – both as a creator and a destroyer. The stability that Carrick has given Manchester United serves as the foundation for the dynasty they have built in the last two decades. Many managers and players have come and gone at United, yet Carrick remains.

And now Carrick will be using his experience and consistency to help England beat Rest of the World in the ICONS of Football golf tournament in The Belfry in June.

Five Spurs starlets to give Pochettino food for thought

There has been very few Premier League managers in recent years who have utilised young players as frequently as Mauricio Pochettino.

At Southampton, starlets like Matt Targett, James Ward-Prowse, Harrison Reed and Sam Gallagher were established successfully into the first-team, while at Spurs the Argentine has constructed his first-team squad around young, home-grown talent.

With four competitions on the radar yet again for Tottenham, Pochettino may need to delve even deeper into the club’s academy to find talent in 2016/17, and there is plenty available.

Here are the FIVE starlets who could give Mauricio Pochettino food for thought ahead of the new season.

Josh Onomah

Featuring in 18 games in all competitions last campaign, Josh Onomah is fast becoming a fully-fledged first-team player at Spurs.

Having signed a new four-year-deal at the club earlier this year, the 19-year-old looks set to gain further senior experience this season; a fully justified reward for one of the brightest young English players around.

Harry Winks

Another youngster at Spurs to have recently signed a new deal, Harry Winks had to bide his time before grabbing a taste of first-team action, which he eventually claimed last season.

Winks has been training intermittently with the first-team since the age of 16 and it has proven to be an ideal transition for the 20-year-old, who now looks a level above the reserve team games that he so often features in.

Cameron Carter-Vickers

So impressive have the performances from Cameron Carter-Vickers been for the U-21s in 2016, Pochettino even shared his admiration of the 18-year-old publicly:

“We have another youngster from the academy – Cameron Carter-Vickers. He is still young but has enough quality and he is training with us from the beginning of the season and playing for the Under-21s. It’s a good opportunity to stay with us now more consistently.”

Possibly the most exciting talent in Spurs’ youth set-up, expect the American defender to feature at the Lane this coming season.

[ad_pod id=’1617-transfers’ align=’center’]

Kyle Walker-Peters

Like his almost namesake, Kyle Walker-Peters is a promising young English right-back who has impressed at youth level with his consistency and attacking flair.

Despite his diminutive stature, Walker-Peters plays with great heart and has been noticed by Pochettino, who gave the 19-year-old a spot on the senior bench twice last season.

While a couple of loan spells may help develop the young defender, there is no reason why he could not hold his own in some of the upcoming campaigns’ ‘lesser’ competitions.

[ad_pod id=’1617-transfers’ align=’center’]

Shayon Harrison

Another player who impressed Mauricio Pochettino last term, young Shayon Harrison trained with the first-team a number of times and established himself as an upcoming star in the Spurs youth ranks.

The lightning fast striker has impressive agility in the box and is capable of finding the net on a regular basis.

While Harrison may need a few more months of youth football to continue his development, the lack of striking options at Spurs may mean that the 19-year-old is thrust into senior football sooner than he thinks.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Lionel Messi to MLS is a game-changer: Inter Miami transfer can change American soccer forever

GOAL breaks down the Argentine's massive decision, how it came together and what it means for all involved

What was once a fantasy is now a formality. An event that was once a dream is now, finally, a reality. Lionel Messi, arguably the greatest player of all time, is heading to Inter Miami. After all this time, all of the rumors and leaks and speculation, Messi has arrived.

It's still a weird sentence to write, despite all of the buildup that came before it. Messi's MLS arrival always felt like a pipedream, one that only the most hopeful of American soccer fans truly believed in. For some time, it felt like Inter Miami and MLS found themselves in the middle ground, unable to compete with the allure of European competition, the money of the Middle East and the romanticism of a South American return.

In the end, MLS found itself as the perfect marriage of all three. With his move stateside, Messi instantly becomes an American sports icon, the second coming of David Beckham and, perhaps, even bigger. It's only right that it is Beckham's club that inevitably became the club to lure Messi, igniting a new era of MLS led by one of the game's biggest titans.

So how did we get here and what does it all mean? GOAL has you covered with everything you need to know about Messi's big decision:

  • Twitter

A move years in the making

Back in 2020, Messi found himself at a crossroads for the first time in his career, with his Barcelona contract dwindling down. As we all know, he eventually decided to stay at Barca for one more season, but that summer showed the first signs of deterioration between the superstar and the only club he'd ever called home.

The next summer, he was free to go wherever he wished. For the first time in his career, Messi was without a club. He, inevitably, made the move to Paris to sign with PSG, but that was the first sign of real hope for clubs outside of Catalunya.

Over in MLS, the club best positioned to meet Messi's criteria has always been Inter Miami. For years, Miami has looked to build a team worthy of attracting the Argentine star. One of their initial big signings was Messi's long-time team-mate, Gonzalo Higuain, who spoke glowingly of his experience at the club as he approached retirement.

Messi is fond of the area and often vacations in South Florida, a place that is a melting pot of North American and South American culture. The presence of Beckham only sweetened the deal, giving Messi a familiar face to work alongside should a deal ever get done.

It wasn't Beckham, however, that was the key to getting a deal done, but rather his co-owners Jorge and Jose Mas. For years, the Mas brothers have been in close contact with Messi and his entourage, and the two have been cautiously optimistic that a deal could get done.

"David and I have been working really hard, we have aspirations of bringing the best players here and Leo Messi is a generational player, arguably the best player of all time,” Mas told the back in 2021. “I am optimistic Messi will play in an Inter Miami shirt because I think it will complete the legacy of the greatest player in our generation and will meet with the ambitions of the owners of Inter Miami to build a world-class team.”

In the end, Mas was right: Messi is coming. However, it took a hell of a lot of work to make it happen.

    MLS moves heaven and earth

The key thing to remember is that this deal doesn't just matter to Inter Miami, but to American soccer as a whole. A rising tide lifts all boats, as they say, and Messi's arrival is a tidal wave. Because of that, it took more than just the Mas brothers to get this done. It also took more than just MLS.

According to , MLS' commercial partners Apple and adidas have played huge parts in sweetening the deal for Messi, and are perhaps the biggest reasons he's ultimately decided to come stateside.

Apple, who became the home of all MLS matches when they signed a 10-year, multibillion-dollar deal this spring, reportedly offered Messi a share of revenue generated by new subscribers to MLS Season Pass, the league's home on Apple TV. Apple has also announced a docuseries with Messi separate from MLS, with that chronicling Messi's World Cup triumph this past fall.

Messi's potential arrival would be massive for Apple, as the company's TV contract with MLS is a global deal. Therefore, fans around the world, not just in the U.S., would be able to follow Messi's MLS career with a subscription. Apple are more than willing to help, as Messi would bring countless eyeballs to their product. In the end, the reason Apple bet on MLS was because of something like this.

adidas, meanwhile, is MLS' kit sponsor, and also Messi's longtime partner. says that Messi has been offered a profit-sharing deal by adidas, which would see the Argentine receive a cut of any increase in the company's profits as a result of his MLS arrival. It's hard to fathom how many pink Messi jerseys will be sold in the coming years. There likely won't be many more popular shirts in world soccer, and adidas, and Messi, would get a cut of each sale.

Finally, MLS has long been expected to offer Messi a similar deal that the league did to Beckham, who used a clause in his initial contract to purchase the right to form Inter Miami in a cut-price deal worth only $25 million. Money is clearly not the only motivating factor for Messi, though, as he left a more lucrative option on the table.

  • Goal Ar / Social

    The Saudi offer

While MLS' financial package is sweet, no doubt, it pales in comparison to what Messi was reportedly offered to go to Saudi Arabia. Al-Hilal, one of four clubs to be recently taken over by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, reportedly made Messi an offer of over $400 million-per-year.

The league has recently lured the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema with similarly massive deals, with the likes of N'Golo Kante and Sergio Ramos supposedly set to arrive soon, too

Messi has had an affiliation with the country, having served as a tourism ambassador. He was suspended by PSG earlier this year for taking an unsanctioned trip to Saudi Arabia following a loss to Lorient. However, despite the tantalizing thought of Messi and Ronaldo renewing their rivalry, Messi has chosen MLS, where he can become a transcendent star.

    Retirement league? Not quite!

For years, MLS has looked to shift the 'retirement league' label that was placed upon it by the rest of the world. Over the last five years or so, the league has trended younger, with signings like Messi's World Cup team-mate, Thiago Almada, taking centerstage.

However, there is still a place for familiar faces, with players like Lorenzo Insigne, Xherdan Shaqiri and Christian Benteke all joining over the last year or so. But none of those players are anywhere near Messi, both on or off the field.

Messi may not fully be at the peak of his Barcelona powers, but there's still an argument to be made that he's a top-five player in the world. He's among the favorites to lift the Ballon d'Or later this year after almost-single-handedly lifting Argentina to World Cup glory. He also put up 21 goals and 20 assists for PSG in all competitions last season, giving him a goal involvement per game across his 41 appearances.

That's what makes this move so compelling. This isn't Messi coasting through for one final paycheck. No, Messi still has his sights on the Copa America and the 2026 World Cup. The Argentine isn't retirement-ready, not in the slightest. He's still a superstar and, if history is any indication, he won't disappoint.

All Rashford touches is gold! Man Utd winners, losers and ratings as top-four charge gathers momentum vs Nottingham Forest

The Red Devils are riding their star forward's revival as far as he can take them

Marcus Rashford is in the zone. Every touch he takes is golden.

He starred for England at the World Cup. He led the way last week in the Carabao Cup. In Tuesday's 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest, he was the driver of almost everything good for Manchester United.

Rashford spun a shot past Wayne Hennessey to open the scoring through a well-executed set piece routine before teeing up Anthony Martial three minutes later. Later, he split the Nottingham Forest defence with a long through ball that found its way to Antony for a clear-cut chance.

After enduring a lengthy slump dating back to at least Euro 2020, Rashford's latest performance pushed him to six goals and an assist since the start of November for club and country.

Behind Rashford, Casemiro was a key force for Manchester United and even registered a late assist following a dogged defensive midfield effort.

The Red Devils are now just a point behind Tottenham for fourth place with a game in hand, which is a best-case scenario for Erik ten Hag considering the club's putrid start to the season.

Getty ImagesThe Winners

Marcus Rashford:

The England forward now has more Premier League goals and assists this year than the last despite 10 fewer appearances. You can so easily see what that has done for his confidence. That pearly smile is back as he's working his way back to the 2019-20 form that vaulted him to global acclaim.

Manchester United can't afford to let this talented young man leave anytime soon.

Casemiro:

Capped perhaps his best performance in a Manchester United shirt by winning possession in a dangerous area and then assisting compatriot Fred.

Casemiro is of course much more than the stats could ever suggest, and that assist was just a feather in the cap after he had run around tirelessly all match breaking up Nottingham Forest play to keep the visitors from ever getting comfortable.

Luke Shaw:

It was a surprise to see the left-back lined up in the centre of defence, but his performance offered little hint he was playing out of his comfort zone. Erik ten Hag will keep Shaw's production in the role in the back of his head for future use whenever Raphael Varane or Lisandro Martinez are unavailable.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesThe Losers

Jesse Lingard:

Any illusions of ruining the festive period for his former club were quickly squashed as Manchester United completely bottled up the attacker before he left due to injury.

The Red Devils ruined his career by preventing him from leaving last term after he had been so good on loan at West Ham in 2020-21. A shame.

Harry Maguire:

The Manchester United centre-back is battling illness and thus has barely trained since returning from international duty, but it will still feel frustrating to be on the bench as left-back Luke Shaw starts in central defence.

Lisandro Martinez is sure to return soon from his Argentina World Cup celebrations, which will push Maguire even further down the pecking order.

Wayne Hennessey:

Nottingham Forest's goalkeeper needed to save Anthony Martial's goal in the first half. Once that went in, his team had little chance of staging a comeback.

GettyMan Utd Ratings: Defence

David de Gea (7/10):

Made a nice reflex save in the second half.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka (7/10):

With his Manchester United future in doubt, the right-back actually put in a great shift, with his much-maligned attacking abilities not as bad as advertised. Played some probing crosses and didn't do anything wrong tracking back. We'll see if it keeps him from being sold in January.

Raphael Varane (7/10):

No World Cup heartbreak hangover here.

Luke Shaw (7/10):

Out of position to fill in for Lisandro Martinez, he showed off versatility many fans didn't realise he possessed.

Tyrell Malacia (6/10):

At some fault for a disallowed first-half Nottingham Forest goal, but we're probably not allowed to assign blame for that! Otherwise solid.

Christian Eriksen (7/10):

Assisted Rashford with a low, short corner – though Rashford was wide open, so not much skill was needed there. Completed two key passes and was over 90 per cent overall playing the ball.

Casemiro (9/10):

Made sure ex-Manchester United player Jesse Lingard couldn't pick up the ball in dangerous middle areas. Did everything he was bought to do.

Pakistan seek to clear path to final

Big Picture

Teams are getting close to that stage of the Asia Cup when a place in the final is the only thing in their mind. Pakistan, who opened their account against UAE on Monday night after getting walloped by India, have a lot to do, and the first thing will be to beat Bangladesh, who are ahead of them by two points after their wins over UAE and Sri Lanka, and will have a clearer path to the final if they can win this contest.Bangladesh were on fire against Sri Lanka, putting aside their T20 conservatism and taking the game by the collar. Sabbir Rahman’s brilliant 80 off 54 balls led the way, with Shakib Al Hasan and Mahmudullah providing a fine finish. With the ball, Shakib did well again while Mashrafe Mortaza, Al-Amin Hossain and Mustafizur Rahman bowled critical overs with much confidence to stop Sri Lanka from overtaking their mediocre score. The last of those names, Mustafizur, is missing due to a side strain, which will be a big blow to the home side. Mustafizur took two wickets on debut against Pakistan last year and has been bowling well lately too. On the other hand, Bangladesh’s batting will be bolstered by the return of Tamim Iqbal, after he returned to Dhaka from Bangkok where his wife gave birth to their first child. Tamim is in form too, having made 267 runs in six innings during the PSL last month.Pakistan will bank a lot on their bowling attack, especially Mohammad Amir who lit up the Asia Cup with his spells against India and UAE. They will expect more from the likes of Mohammad Sami and Mohammad Irfan, and the left-arm spinner Mohammad Nawaz, who was tonked around the park by UAE.Pakistan’s main concern will be their batting line-up, particularly their top order, which did not do well in the first two matches. Much will depend on Umar Akmal and Shoaib Malik, and on Shahid Afridi and Sarfraz Ahmed down the order. There is every chance of this being an excellent contest now that the Mirpur curator Gamini Silva is dishing out better pitches.

Form guide

(last five completed matches, most recent first)
Bangladesh WWLLL
Pakistan WLLLW

Watch out for

Umar Akmal made sure of Pakistan’s two points against UAE in their last game, and he did that in style, reaching his eighth T20I fifty in the process. He has, however, made only 20 runs in the two innings he has played against Bangladesh in this format. There is very little left to say about Mashrafe Mortaza‘s leadership, but he will want to improve his wicket count against Pakistan in T20Is, having taken just two wickets in seven matches against them.

Team news

Tamim Iqbal will return to the XI, most likely in place of Mohammad Mithun, while Abu Hider could replace the injured Mustafizur Rahman.Bangladesh (probable): 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Soumya Sarkar, 3 Sabbir Rahman, 4 Mushfiqur Rahim, 5 Shakib Al Hasan, 6 Mahmudullah, 7 Nurul Hasan (wk), 8 Mashrafe Mortaza (capt), 9 Al-Amin Hossain, 10 Abu Hider, 11 Taskin AhmedPakistan could take out Khurram Manzoor and include Imad Wasim but there is unlikely to be any place for Anwar Ali.Pakistan (probable): 1 Sharjeel Khan, 2 Mohammad Hafeez, 3 Khurram Manzoor, 4 Umar Akmal, 5 Shoaib Malik, 6 Shahid Afridi (capt), 7 Sarfraz Ahmed (wk), 8 Mohammad Sami, 9 Mohammad Amir, 10 Mohammad Nawaz, 11 Mohammad Irfan

Pitch and conditions

There will still be something for the seamers in the Mirpur pitch but it won’t be as exaggerated as it was in the first few matches. There is no forecast of rain on Wednesday evening.

Stats and trivia

  • In the last encounter between these two sides, Sabbir Rahman scored a fifty that he still reckons is his best T20I knock.
  • Mohammad Hafeez is 30 runs behind Umar Akmal as Pakistan’s highest scorer in T20Is while Shakib Al Hasan needs 55 more runs to become the first Bangladesh batsman to reach 1000 T20I runs.

Quotes

“In the last one year, he has scored thousand international runs. He has been our best at the top, so having someone of that calibre always helps.”
“The wickets here are a bit difficult. As the tournament is progressing, yesterday’s wicket did not have much grass. So I think our players are confident.”
