Teden Mengi could save Man Utd fortune

Manchester United defender Teden Mengi has made an excellent start to life within senior football and he could potentially save the Red Devils from forking out a small fortune.

The 18-year-old centre-back joined Derby County on-loan in January, with his temporary move to Pride Park being his first experience of senior football away from United’s youth team set-up.

He has certainly had an extremely promising start to life in the East-Midlands.

Mengi has so far made four appearances for the Rams, three of those starts, and earned his first clean sheet in midweek in a 0-0 draw against Barnsley.

Rams’ boss and former Red Devils hero, Wayne Rooney, has certainly been enamoured by the youngster so far, labelling his performance against the Tykes on Wednesday as “excellent”.

Despite only just venturing into senior football, Mengi’s statistics suggest that he is not out of place at all.

According to WhoScored, he is averaging 4.9 defensive contributions per match; 1.3 tackles, 1.3 interceptions, two clearances and 0.3 blocks.

His numbers are extremely comparable to fellow centre-backs and senior professionals Curtis Davies and Matthew Clarke, indicating how quickly he has adapted to Championship football.

Considering his age, Mengi already appears to have plenty of composure when in the tackle, only averaging 0.5 fouls per 90 minutes which is only beaten by George Edmundson of central defenders in the Rams’ squad. That is not an aspect often found in young players, who are slightly too keen to make their mark.

Whilst those numbers should level out as Mengi accumulates more experience with Derby, it is an extremely promising start for the youngster, who has captained the Red Devils’ U23 team on a number of occasions.

With Manchester United and Ole Gunnar Soslkjaer reportedly keen to sign a centre-back in the summer, £1.35m-rated Mengi could save the Red Devils a considerable fee should he continue his current trajectory at Pride Park and prove that he’s a viable first-team option once he returns to Old Trafford.

Predicted Saints XI vs Sheffield United

Southampton travel to Bramall Lane on Saturday hoping that they can turn around their recent awful form and pick up three points against Sheffield United, who despite some recent impressive results are still rock bottom of the Premier League.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side have now picked up just one point from their last nine top-flight fixtures, which has seen them dragged into a potential relegation battle, but they can ease any fears of playing Championship football next season with three points against Chris Wilder’s side on Saturday.

The Austrian could welcome back the likes of Kyle Walker-Peters and Ibrahima Diallo after injury, which should be a huge boost to their chances of leaving Bramall Lane with maximum points.

Here’s how Football FanCast expects Hasenhuttl to line up, with three changes from the team which started against Everton last time out…

Fraser Forster keeps his place in goal, despite conceding his first goal of the season in the 1-0 defeat against Everton.

There’s one change in defence, as Walker-Peters makes his return at right-back, which allows Jan Bednarek to move back into the middle, with Mohammed Salisu the one to miss out.

There are two changes in midfield, as Takumi Minamino returns from his own minor injury to start on the left-hand side ahead of Nathan Redmond, whilst Ibrahima Diallo comes in to partner James Ward-Prowse, allowing Stuart Armstrong to move out to the right-hand side, with Moussa Djenepo not risked.

Finally, in attack, Danny Ings partners Che Adams, although both will have to rediscover their goalscoring touch if Southampton are to turn their recent form around, with Adams hoping to find success against his old side on Saturday.

And, in other news… Hasenhuttl handed huge boost ahead of relegation clash; he could be a game-changer

Ross Wilson must sanction Rangers move for Sheffield United star John Lundstram as a Davis alternative

Glasgow Rangers will be well aware they will need to find a suitable replacement for Steven Davis in the not too distant future.

What’s the word?

Ross Wilson brought in Bongani Zungu from French Ligue 2 side Amiens on an initial loan deal with the option-to-buy but the Bafana-Bafana midfielder has arguably done very little to justify an extension to his stay at Ibrox thus far.

It seems Steven Gerrard is in agreement, as Rangers have reportedly turned their attentions elsewhere instead.

According to Football Insider, Sheffield United midfielder John Lundstram is still of interest to the Light Blues, and Chris Wilder has recently admitted defeat.

The Blades boss said: “Him [Lundstram] and his agent have made a decision that he doesn’t want to sign.”

It’s claimed clubs south of the border, including Premier League duo Burnley and Crystal Palace, are also keen to secure his signature in January.

Lundstram has impressed for the south Yorkshire outfit especially over the past couple of years, providing eight goals and assists in 100 appearances across all competitions, via Transfermarkt.

Ideal Steven Davis alternative

Although his form has somewhat tailed off this season, having been sent off against Brighton following a challenge on Joel Veltman, there’s no denying the fact that Lundstram could be a significant coup for the Gers.

It’s an open secret the Ibrox boss has wanted a genuine box-to-box midfielder for some time now, which is why he tried to sign Preston North End playmaker Daniel Johnson in the summer, but to no avail.

Given his age, it’s safe to say that Davis isn’t getting any younger, and coupled with the fact his current deal is set to expire at the end of this season, it’s surely only a matter of time before he decides to hang up his boots for good.

Former Aston Villa and England striker Gabriel Agbonlahor has insisted Lundstram, who reportedly earns around £4,000-per-week at Bramall Lane, would seize the chance to move to Ibrox in a heartbeat.

He told Football Insider: “I think so. He’s a quality player.

“I’ve heard he’s not agreed a contract, maybe that’s wages they can’t agree. If Rangers can pay the money that he wants then maybe it suits him.

“I’m sure if anybody’s got a chance to leave Sheffield United at the moment, the way they’re playing, I’m sure they would.

“Rangers are a massive club that I’m sure he would love to go and play for.”

Rather than signing Zungu on a permanent basis, Rangers chief Ross Wilson may be better served sanctioning a move for Lundstram, as not only would he be able to provide suitable backup for the Northern Irish veteran stalwart, but he’d also be a significant upgrade on the South Africa international as well.

His high levels of concentration and ability to spray passes over the top would make him the perfect fit for the Govan-based Glaswegian giants, whilst signing a midfielder capable of covering and competing for a place in the starting line-up with Davis would be an extremely smart bit of business.

Should Davis depart Ibrox, Gerrard would have a ready-made replacement waiting in the wings if Wilson can get a deal over the line.

Why should Leeds unleash Ian Poveda?

This has been a rather troubled January for Leeds United. They have won just once and have failed to strengthen their ranks in the transfer window.

Though, despite Marcelo Bielsa insisting he’s happy with his squad, rumours of potential incomings are swirling around.

On the chalkboard

One of the names linked with Leeds in recent days has been Nottingham Forest youngster Brennan Johnson.

The winger is currently on loan at Lincoln City where he’s been tearing League One to shreds with five goals and six assists in 20 outings.

It’s an impressive record for a 19-year-old who is doing all the right things in terms of his personal development.

The Whites haven’t been afraid to strengthen their youth ranks in recent years and that was evident last summer. Victor Orta brought in the likes of Joe Gelhardt, Sam Greenwood, Cody Drameh and Crysencio Summerville.

Though, with a host of young attackers in their midst, signing another even if they are talented, fails to make much sense.

Unleash Poveda

There is no doubting the supreme talents of Johnson. However, rather than spending on new recruits this month, Leeds must look at unleashing someone already in their ranks.

That happens to be Ian Poveda. The 20-year-old signed from Manchester City a year ago but has only made one senior start since.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-this-weeks-latest-leeds-news” title=”Read this week’s latest Leeds news!”]

He has appeared ten times as a substitute in the Premier League this term but is yet to play from the off. Poveda’s only chance to shine from kick-off was against Crawley in the FA Cup.

Of course, that was a dismal affair for the Whites as they lost 3-0. However, the English winger was a ball of energy and if anyone could come away from the game with credit, it was him.

He was devastating in the final third and a wonderful piece of trickery in the first-half summed up his game. Poveda attempted four dribbles – two of which were successful – and also provided a key pass all within 58 minutes.

For various reasons, he hasn’t been given a regular chance in the Premier League but we reckon that should change in the back half of the campaign. After all, he possesses qualities that can frighten defenders.

Discussing the youngster earlier this season, Noel Whelan said: “You can see now when you talk about people changing games and bringing a different dimension, he’s very, very quick, got great feet, very tricky, likes to run at players. Very much like Raphinha as well.”

If Leeds really do have another Raphinha in their clutches, it can only be a good thing. The Brazilian has been a radiant ball of attacking quality since signing from Rennes and with three goals and three assists, is improving all the time.

It’s time Poveda was given a similar platform to try and do the same. Leeds would only harm his development further by bringing a player like Johnson to the club.

They must ignore him and unleash their own young players.

Leeds face transfer battle for Reading’s Michael Olise

Leeds United are set to face a real battle in the race to sign Reading starlet Michael Olise in the January transfer window.

What’s the story?

Reports in recent weeks have suggested Marcelo Bielsa’s side are interested in landing the £7.2m-rated talent this month, but The Daily Mirror’s latest update on Olise’s future may have handed the Whites a major blow.

The report claims that fellow Premier League side Aston Villa are now also eyeing up a potential move for the 19-year-old, and that Dean Smith is keen to add more younger players to his first-team squad, and has been given the green light to make some major moves in the transfer market.

Radrizzani must cough up

Given Olise’s performances this season for the Royals, it’s no surprise to see plenty of clubs lining up to try and sign him. He’s bagged four goals and provided an impressive eight assists in just 24 games this campaign, and with his ability to play anywhere behind the striker, could give Bielsa another attacking weapon.

His teammate at Reading, Sam Baldock, said early last year: “Michael is a real talent, he’ll get on the ball in any situation. He’s fearless, if you ask him today I’ll guarantee that he had no nerves. He’s a lively character and one who I’ve noticed a real change in the last couple of months.”

Given his age, there’s real potential for Olise to go far, and nabbing him at a low price now would gift Leeds an incredible asset both in terms of what he could offer on the pitch, and how much he could sell for down the line.

Andrea Radrizzani must surely consider coughing up the money Reading want for him now, and making sure that Villa or any other club don’t swoop in under their noses. It would be a nightmare for the Whites if Olise turned into a superstar elsewhere and they look back on the moment they snubbed a move for him.

Glasgow Rangers: West Ham set to make offer for James Tavernier

According to TEAMtalk, West Ham United are considering a bid for Glasgow Rangers captain James Tavernier.

As the transfer deadline closes in, the Hammers remain in need of defensive reinforcements, and Tavernier has been pinpointed as one of the men who could help them in that department.

Steven Gerrard would fight to keep the right-back, of course, but the Irons are set to test the Ibrox outfit’s resolve with an offer.

The 28-year-old could hardly have hoped for a better start to the season north of the border. In his first 11 games in all competitions, he has scored six times, whilst he has created a further four. That now leaves his career total for the 54-time Scottish champions at 52 strikes and 78 assists – there are few defenders who could claim to have anything close to that kind of output.

Currently valued at £4.5m by Transfermarkt, Tavernier still has two years left on his contract with the Gers and, as the armband indicates, he is an influential figure at the club. West Ham would likely need to make a significant bid to convince Steven Gerrard and co to part ways – it remains to be seen whether they do just that.
