Should Wolves sign Matheus Pereira?

Bruno Lage has already made a tremendous start to his first transfer window at Wolves.

The Old Gold manager may have limited funds to spend but he’s finding ways around that difficulty, luring Trincao to the club on a season-long loan deal.

The Portuguese’s arrival from Barcelona was a surprising one but further transfers are in the pipeline.

On the chalkboard

One of the biggest decisions the new boss had to make upon his entry to the Midlands was the future of some of their previous loan players.

Rayan Ait-Nouri looked as though he wasn’t going to return until last week when it was revealed they were close to sealing a permanent deal of £10m for his transfer from Angers.

However, the future of Vitinha remains a little less clear. The attacking midfielder only started five times in the Premier League last season and was relatively inconsistent.

He starred at the U21 European Championships but Lage and Wolves sense they may be able to find better value elsewhere.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-wolves-transfer-news-ceballos-zinchenko-euros-felix-lage” title=”Read the latest Wolves transfer news!”]

The fee that was being touted for his services was around £18m, a fair whack for a squad player when you don’t have much to spend.

The solution

One player who could be searching for a new club this summer is West Bromwich Albion’s creative magician, Matheus Pereira.

The Brazilian had a wonderful first campaign in the top-flight of English football but was ultimately relegated with the Baggies.

If he stays in the Championship then it would be an almighty surprise for a player who delivered so much in 2020/21.

Kevin Phillips revealed back in April that a Portuguese connection could see him move to Molineux. The player came through the academy at Sporting Lisbon and spent most of his formative years in Iberia.

Although he offers more quality than Vitinha, he would presumably come at a greater cost after such an impressive 12 months.

Speaking about the versatile attacker’s qualities last season, pundit Micah Richards could only find praise. He commented: “I watched him a lot in the Championship last season (2019/20), wondering if he can do it in the Premier League, and he showed me in the last couple of games that he definitely can. He’s just an absolute delight to watch.”

Pereira was simply outstanding for Albion last term, scoring 12 goals and registering six assists. That took his tally in a Baggies shirt to 20 strikes overall as the 25-year-old contributed to around 48% of his team’s goals. For context, only Harry Kane (61%) had a higher percentage in the league last season.

Meanwhile, in 2019/20, only Kevin De Bruyne with 20 assists, created more goals than Pereira (16), in the entirety of England’s top four leagues.

With that in mind, Wolves must surely consider luring him across the Midlands.

AND in other news, Imagine him & Trincao: Wolves must sign “remarkable” 22-goal beast with “magic” feet…

Pundit says Tottenham yet to replace Mousa Dembele - Exclusive

Former Tottenham captain Graham Roberts reckons the club have suffered in midfield since Mousa Dembele left, and are yet to replace the Belgian.

Dembele was a key part of the Spurs midfield for several seasons, establishing himself as one of the most unique in the Premier League.

He appeared more than 300 times for the club, although his exit proved a sour one following an ankle injury which saw him miss the final 18 games prior to his move to the Chinese Super League.

Following Dembele’s departure in January 2019, Tottenham bought in highly-rated pair Tanguy Ndombele and Giovani Lo Celso later that summer.

However, neither of those two have been able to step in the Belgian’s footsteps, and Roberts exclusively told Football FanCast that he doesn’t believe the club have been able to replace him:

“I’m not having a dig at players, but you need someone to replace Mousa Dembele, you need quality, and we haven’t had that.

“Mousa has been gone two-and-a-half years, and we have gone backwards since then, our midfield has been awful.”

Ball: Farhad Moshiri to blame for Everton mess - Exclusive

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, former Everton defender Michael Ball believes Farhad Moshiri needs to take responsibility for where the Toffees are right now.

Despite bringing in some big signings last summer, most notably James Rodriguez, Everton once again failed to make that next step and qualify for Europe.

Since then, they have lost Carlo Ancelotti to Real Madrid and looked at various managers during their search for a successor.

Ultimately, it has all got a bit too messy for Ball, who has pointed the finger at the club owner.

“Moshiri, yes, he’s ploughed a lot of money into the football club,” the ex-Everton full-back said. “But I think he’s only got himself to blame, the money he has squandered on players that he wanted and managers he’s actually appointed.

“It hasn’t worked, so why not trust your technical director, your sporting director who you brought to the football club to improve us.”

Indeed, there has been a bit of disarray at Everton at times during Moshiri’s reign, especially now.

With that being said, the madness of late is largely due to Ancelotti’s shock exit, which Moshiri and most people probably did not see coming.

It sets the club up for an interesting season, a season where Ancelotti’s successor will be hoping to overtake the likes of Tottenham, Leicester City and West Ham, who all grabbed European spots ahead of Everton.

West Ham: Irons rebuffed in offer for Attila Szalai

West Ham have reportedly made a £10.3m offer for Fenerbahçe centre-back Attila Szalai which has been swiftly rejected [Enson Haber].

The Lowdown: West Ham get ready for the 2021/22 season

As they get their ducks in a row ahead of pre-season, the Hammers will be desperate to acquire quality additions as they get ready to embark on their 2021/22 Europa League adventure.

David Moyes has made one acquisition since the curtain fell on 2020/21, bringing in Craig Dawson permanently from Watford owing to his excellent last few months for the Irons [whufc.com].

Could they now be set to become embroiled in a summer transfer saga following recent developments?

The Latest: Hammers see £10.3m bid rebuffed for Szalai’s services

West Ham have seen a £10.3m bid swiftly rebuffed for Hungary international Szalai [Enson Haber via Hammers News].

Disappointingly for the Irons, his current employers are said to value the 23-year-old at around £17.2m, meaning the east Londoners would have to dig deep in order to secure their target.

Understandably, the 1.92m (6 foot 4) colossus may be brought in to consolidate the depth in central defence, which has been lacking in recent months due to the injury-prone tendencies of Italian defender Angelo Ogbonna [West Ham Zone].

The Verdict: West Ham should stump up the funds

Seeing their proposition rejected by Fenerbahçe will come as a frustrating blow to the London Stadium hierarchy.

Szalari is very capable of posing an attacking threat and the towering figure enjoyed a dominant 2020/21 season for both former club Apollon Limassol and his current side. Making 41 appearances last season between the two clubs, he registered an astonishing nine goal contributions, with six goals and three assists [Transfermarkt].

He has also featured 16 times for his native Hungary [Transfermarkt], impressing at Euro 2020 as he completed 17 ball recoveries across their three group games [UEFA].

Once labelled ‘amazing’ by Hungarian football journalist Gergely Marosi [New Straits Times], West Ham should really look to stump up the asking price in order to capture the talented centre-back.

Due to Fenerbahçe failing to obtain Champions League qualification, this may be possible to carry out so long as the Irons are willing to come closer to the Istanbul club’s valuation for the player.

In other news, many West Ham United fans flock to news of a recent signing.

Charnley stance on Newcastle takeover

A source has shared what Lee Charnley’s stance is on the Premier League and how they have dealt with the potential takeover of Newcastle United.

The Lowdown: Arbitration looms

The arbitration case between the St. James’ Park faithful and the English top flight is seemingly not far away at all, as Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie has reported that it is expected to start at the end of June.

Mike Ashley has also launched a separate anti-competition claim against the division over their decision-making process in the failed deal between him and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) group, which he is keeping in his back pocket in case the results of the arbitration hearing do not go in his favour.

The Latest: Charnley’s stance

As per The Athletic, a source has shared that since the takeover bid has stalled, Charnley’s tone during meetings has sometimes been ‘negative’, adding that he ‘isn’t happy’ with how the PL behaved when they decided to fail the bid.

The source also claimed with regards to the failed deal that ‘that’s led to Newcastle almost protest-voting against things’, hence the two separate claims that they have launched against the Premier League.

The Verdict: Not surprising

It is not surprising at all to hear that Charnley is not happy with how the top flight have behaved with regards to the whole takeover saga.

He, like Ashley, is keen for the Tyneside club to be sold to the KSA consortium, but the decision-making of the top flight has left both them and the fans in limbo.

Nonetheless, he will be hoping for a positive result for the Magpies in the arbitration proceedings coming up, which should paint a much better picture over the direction the takeover is heading.

If the results are negative for the Toon, then at least they have the separate anti-competition lawsuit to fall back on, but Charnley will be hoping that this is not needed, and fans will be hoping to see the back of him too.

Celtic warned against Ali McCann signing

St Johnstone starlet Ali McCann isn’t ‘ready’ to make a move to Celtic, Frank McAvennie has warned.

The lowdown

The 21-year-old made 31 Premiership appearances for St Johnstone in the 2020/21 season and also helped them win the Scottish Cup earlier this month.

The Northern Irishman averaged 2.7 tackles per game in the league, the joint-most alongside Kilmarnock’s Gary Dicker and Hamilton’s Scott Martin (via WhoScored). He also recorded 1.5 interceptions, 0.8 key passes and 0.9 shots per game from his central midfield berth, earning a nomination for the PFA Scotland Young Player of the Year Award.

The Daily Record reported last week that Celtic have identified McCann as an option ahead of the summer transfer window. He has two years left on his contract and is valued at £630,000 by Transfermarkt.

The latest

McAvennie reckons the move would come too soon for McCann, and he feels that Celtic need to focus on bringing in more established names.

The 61-year-old told Football Insider: “To be honest, I don’t think he’s ready for Celtic. He’s one for the future.

“Celtic are going to try and sign players who can walk into any team and stay there. That’s my problem with that move. I just don’t that he’s good enough, unfortunately.

“Celtic have too many players who are just bit-part players. They need to recruit better.”

The verdict

Despite McAvennie’s misgivings, Celtic could easily sign McCann as ‘one for the future’ rather than relying on him straight away. He doesn’t necessarily have to be at the forefront of their summer business. Instead, he could be a shrewd, long-term addition for a relatively low fee.

Yes, Celtic need to be ambitious, but that doesn’t mean they should bypass the opportunity to pick up one of the most impressive young talents lower down the division. Indeed, they signed Kristoffer Ajer as a fledgling 17-year-old in 2016 and he has grown into a first team regular, playing 176 times so far for the Hoops. Who’s to say McCann can’t do the same if he comes to Parkhead?

In other news, this serial trophy-winner apparently wants the Celtic manager’s job.

Rangers should return for Siriki Dembele

Rangers were heavily linked with a move f0r Peterborough United winger Siriki Dembele in January and after the Posh’s director of football Barry Fry’s recent admission on the 24-year-old, Ross Wilson and Steven Gerrard should definitely reignite their interest in him and try and bring him to Ibrox this summer.

Rangers were among a number of clubs linked with the former Grimsby Town man in January but he ended up staying with the Posh and helped them to earn promotion back to the English Championship.

In 42 league appearances for Darren Ferguson’s side, the winger contributed 11 goals and 10 assists, averaging a superb 7.32 rating from WhoScored for his performances.

This ranked him as the second-best player in Peterborough’s squad behind fellow Rangers target Jonson Clarke-Harris, so it is clear just how important he was to their promotion.

Whilst the Cambridgeshire outfit will have been desperate to keep hold of him ahead of next season’s Championship campaign, it seems increasingly likely that the “outstanding” winger will depart, especially after Fry’s recent comments.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-rangers-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Rangers transfer rumours and news!”]

The 76-year-old told This Is Futbol: “He’s got a year left on his contract and we’ve made him what we consider to be a lucrative offer but there has been a lot of interest in him, and I don’t think he’ll sign a new contract with us.

“The club’s policy is if you’re in the last year of your contract, and the club offers a contract and you refuse it, we put you on the transfer list. We’ve had bids worth millions for Dembele and rejected them.”

Therefore it looks as if Dembele is keen to leave Peterborough United in the near future and Rangers could be the beneficiaries, should Wilson and Gerrard feel he is worth bringing to Ibrox this summer.

[freshpress-quiz id=“593776″]

His performances in 2020/21 certainly suggest that he would be a worthwhile addition to Gerrard’s squad ahead of next season and this latest update means he could come relatively cheap, so Wilson should definitely consider going back in for Dembele this summer.

In other news… Wilson should seal Rangers swoop for “brilliant” 21 y/o who will “only get better”

Pompey not interested in Todd Kane

Portsmouth manager Danny Cowley is making a shrewd decision as it has been revealed that the club are not looking to sign QPR right-back Todd Kane this summer.

What’s the talk?

London Football News had reported that Portsmouth were one of the clubs trying to sign Kane from QPR. Sunderland and Charlton were also named in the report, with Kane set for an exit from the London-based club in the upcoming transfer window after losing his place in the starting XI earlier this year.

Hampshire Live have cleared up the situation by revealing that Kane is not a player Portsmouth have on their list at the moment.

Whilst Pompey are pursuing the market in search of potential additions to their squad for the 2021/22 campaign, Kane is not one of the players they are considering. It remains to be seen whether or not Charlton and Sunderland’s interest in the defender is genuine or not.

Shrewd call

Kane’s performances in the Championship in the past three seasons have been dismal. In three campaigns for Hull and QPR, Kane highest average WhoScored rating was 6.52. In 2018/19, he averaged a score of 6.48 in 39 appearances for Hull, before dropping to a shocking 6.33 in 32 games for QPR.

His best score came in the season just gone, averaging a score of 6.52 in 28 games, which shows how low of a bar he has set himself since leaving Chelsea in 2019. QPR dropped Kane to deploy Osman Kaykay at right-back as they clearly felt he was not performing at a high enough level to start for them.

Pompey already have Callum Johnson in their squad going into next season. The 24-year-old started 37 of Portsmouth’s games at right-back in League One, recording a solid WhoScored rating of 6.76. Johnson has also been able to fill in at wing-back and centre-back, showing off his versatility to go along with his steady displays at right-back for Cowley’s side. 26-year-old James Bolton has also been able to provide back-up and competition to Johnson.

Therefore, Cowley is making a shrewd call by not pursuing Kane, who is on £7k-per-week at QPR. Kane’s statistics at QPR and Hull do not suggest that he is a good performer at Championship level and that is the division Pompey should be aiming to get to.

Portsmouth will need players who have the quality to shine in League One with the potential to play in a higher tier and Kane has already proven that he does not have the latter. At the age of 27, it is unlikely that he will be able to improve much further beyond his current level, so it is a good call by Portsmouth to avoid this move.
