WBA could sign Windass in January

West Bromwich Albion will be looking to add attacking quality to their side during the upcoming winter transfer window, especially now that Jordan Hugill is reportedly set to be recalled early by Norwich from his loan deal with the Baggies.

One player who has been linked with a move to the Hawthorns again is Josh Windass, who was previously tipped for a move to the club last year.

Windass currently plays for Sheffield Wednesday, despite signing a new contract in the summer and only recently coming back from injury, the 27-year-old has been linked to a number of clubs including Hull City, Blackburn Rovers, Middlesbrough, Stoke City and of course West Brom.

Since coming back from an injury a few weeks ago, the £1.8m-rated attacker has been making up for lost time by scoring twice and assisting once in his first three appearances, which will be pleasing to see for Valerien Ismael who really needs to find a player to add to his attacking third that can offer creativity and finds the back of the net confidently.

Sheffield Wednesday teammate, Barry Bannan, has already hailed the midfielder after speaking to the club’s media upon Windass’ return to the team after injury:

“Josh Windass is massive for us and a top, top player. He makes good runs, has pace and scores goals.” he said.

Ismael will be working to find solutions to the inconsistencies with goal scoring that the current West Brom side have been facing. Having scored just 29 times this term, 31 fewer than first placed Fulham, it has put them further back in the table with automatic promotion a big ask after a run of one win in their last five games.

However, the addition of Windass, somebody with 45 goals in the English Football League to his name, could prove extremely fruitful in turning their season around.

The Baggies have been linked with a number of attacking players already this season due to such a lack of goals, and have been reportedly scouting Windass since he has been back in action, which suggests he could be a strong candidate to be snapped up in January for the club.

West Brom have an important game coming up on Friday evening when they will host Reading at the Hawthorns, they will surely be hoping to stick to their winning ways from their 2-1 victory over Coventry City last weekend.

Pakistan allrounder Shahid Afridi has turned down an offer to represent Tasmania this season because he wants to focus on his team’s forthcoming tour of Australia.”Russel Arnold [the former Sri Lankan player] spoke to me about the possibility of playing for Tasmania but I declined as Pakistan are already due to tour Australia in December,” Afridi told PTI.”I am keen on the tour of Australia and want to perform there for the team because when you perform in Australia, your ranking as a player always goes up.”Pakistan are due to tour Australia for three Tests, five ODIs and a Twenty20 between December 26 and February 5. There’s also an unconfirmed tour of New Zealand between the Champions Trophy in September and the Australia tour.Afridi said he had received feedback on playing in Australia from his team-mates, Younis Khan and Umar Gul, who took part in domestic tournaments last season. Younis represented South Australia and Gul Western Australia.”I have learnt a lot from them about the Australian conditions and their domestic set-up. So I was not pushed to sign up for any state side,” Afridi said.He also praised Younis’ captaincy and his ability to make every player feel part of the team. “Younis is like an older brother to me and a lot of the younger players,” Afridi said during a charity event in Manchester. “It doesn’t make any difference to him whether a player is Punjabi, from Karachi, Pathan or whatever else, he treats everyone the same and really looks after all of us.”Younis has a lot of respect for all the guys in the team, whether you are a senior player or new to international cricket. This makes everyone feel welcome and part of the setup and not an outsider and has really made us gel as a team.”

Newcastle set for Emery move

An exciting update has emerged on Villarreal boss Unai Emery, regarding a potential move to Newcastle…

What’s the talk?

According to Daily Mail journalist Craig Hope, the Magpies are expecting to make an official appointment before their match against Brighton on Saturday.

Reports earlier this morning outlined the club’s interest in bringing the Spaniard to St. James’ Park, but Hope’s latest update suggests that they believe a deal will be done in the coming days.

In a nine-word claim, he said: “NUFC expect to appoint Unai Emery before the weekend.”

Cloud nine

Newcastle fans will surely be left on cloud nine following this exciting update from Hope as the club are seemingly confident of securing an agreement to bring Emery to Tyneside.

Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie made a claim earlier in the day as he said Emery was under serious consideration by the club. Downie also claimed that there is a feeling the Spaniard has unfinished business in the Premier League, although at that point in the day there was no expectation of anything happening.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/check-out-the-latest-newcastle-pif-news-martinez-ward-prowse” title= “Read the latest Newcastle news!”]

This still left room for interpretation, as it was unclear as to whether or not the Magpies were able to strike a deal with Villarreal or whether or not Emery was keen on the job. However, this latest report from the Daily Mail journalist clears up both of those issues by stating that the club ‘expect’ to get it done, rather than saying they are hoping or trying to get him in.

The word ‘expect’ implies that PIF are confident of Emery being in charge for Saturday’s kick-off against Brighton at the AMEX. This is why fans could be left on cloud nine as Steve Bruce’s successor appears to be very close to being confirmed, putting an end to the speculation.

This weekend could be a first chance for the fans to see the Spaniard in charge at Newcastle, although he is likely to have little time to prepare the team to play the way he wants to play, so an immediate improvement on the pitch should not be expected.

The two-week international period could be an excellent opportunity for him to work with the remaining players on the training pitch to get them ready to battle against relegation in the coming months. If he can steer them away from the drop, the Toon Army will no doubt be elated.

Celtic: Osaze Urhoghide may seek loan exit

Celtic centre-back Osaze Urhoghide may seek a loan move away from Parkhead in the New Year, according to The Scottish Sun.

The Lowdown: Urhoghide’s struggles

Urhoghide was actually the club’s first signing following Ange Postecoglou’s appointment, with the Hoops boss labelling the defender as ‘ambitious’.

However, the 21-year-old, who rejected moves to the Premier League to sign for the Hoops, is yet to make a senior appearance in green and white and has had to make do with a place on the bench at the very best.

The 6 foot 1 beast had been a regular for Sheffield Wednesday prior to joining Celtic, and it now seems as if he may look to depart on a temporary basis to gain first-team football.

The Latest: Loan exit?

The Scottish Sun shared a story on Monday evening, looking at Urhoghide and Liam Shaw.

When it came to the pair, they suggested they’re not yet at the levels of those ahead of them in Postecoglou’s pecking order and could push for a loan exit if their situations remain unchanged.

The Verdict: Best for all involved?

Urhoghide, the senior of the pair mentioned, could do with playing first-team football following his breakthrough at Hillsborough last season, so a loan exit in January may suit all parties.

He’s yet to get going at Parkhead, so a change of scenery for the second half of the campaign and a run of games could benefit the centre-back ahead of the 2022/23 season.

Urhoghide is battling the likes of Carl Starfelt, Cameron Carter-Vickers, Stephen Welsh, Liam Scales and possibly Christopher Jullien soon for a place in the side, so on that basis, a loan exit could be a shrewd call.

Leicester City dealt major Jonathan Tah blow

Leicester City have been dealt a major blow in their pursuit of Bayer Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah.

What’s the story?

The highly-rated 25-year-old was linked with a move to the Foxes over the summer as manager Brendan Rodgers searched for extra reinforcements at centre-back, but he ultimately ended up staying put.

And now, well-known journalist Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Tah put pen to paper on a new contract with Leverkusen, extending his stay with the German outfit until 2025 and ending any potential lingering hopes Leicester’s hierarchy had of resurrecting a deal.

He tweeted: “Jonathan Tah has officially signed his contract extension with Bayer Leverkusen until June 2025. The centre back was in Leicester City list months ago.”

Brendan Rodgers will be gutted

Although the Midlands outfit successfully brought in former Southampton defender Jannik Vestergaard in the previous window, Rodgers is still likely to be gutted to see Tah commit his future to Die Werkself.

With Jonny Evans set to turn 34 in January, Caglar Soyuncu struggling for form and Wesley Fofana not set to return from a potentially career-changing injury for many months, further additions at the heart of defence may be required either in January or the summer.

Since arriving at Leverkusen back in 2015, Tah has established himself as one of the Bundesliga’s top centre-backs, making 223 appearances for the BayArena outfit in all competitions.

His impressive performances have earned the German 13 senior caps at international level, highlighting the top-level quality he possesses.

After bursting onto the scene six years ago, Leverkusen sporting director Rudi Völler was quick to praise his new wondered, saying: “Jonathan is quick, technically gifted but still robust. And he can still improve in all areas of his game.”

Tah has indeed improved his game since Völler’s complimentary assessment, and his composure on the ball combined with his natural speed and strength would have made him an ideal fit for the Premier League.

Nevertheless, the 6ft 3 gem will now remain in his homeland for the foreseeable future, meaning Leicester will have to move on to alternative targets.

Reports of IPL move to South Africa denied

Senior officials from India and South Africa have denied reports emerging on Friday that the IPL’s second season will be relocated to South Africa

Alex Brown20-Mar-2009Senior officials from India and South Africa have denied reports emerging on Friday that the IPL’s second season will be relocated to South Africa. The tournament’s immediate future has been in doubt since the Indian government expressed its reluctance to approve the tournament, given its clash with the country’s general election.South Africa was confirmed this week as the new host venue of the Champions Trophy, and a South African official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, told Cricinfo there was a “strong chance (the IPL) could come here, too”. Another, the South African Cricketers’ Association chief executive Tony Irish, confirmed he too had heard the rumours swirling around Newlands regarding South Africa hosting the IPL. “All I know is that there is speculation that this might be happening,” Irish said. But that view was disputed by other officials from Cricket South Africa and the BCCI, who insisted that India remained the preferred venue. “There have been no talks,” said CSA chief executive Gerald Majola. “It is definitely a rumour.” Majola also denied reports in the South African media that representatives from CSA and the BCCI were due to meet in Cape Town on Saturday afternoon.”There is no meeting,” Majola continued. “I am in Cape Town today, but I am at the Test match. If you’re watching it on TV you will see me there. I don’t know where this is coming from. There is no meeting happening.”Lalit Modi, the IPL commissioner, also denied the story while officials from several IPL franchises said they were unaware of any such news. “There is absolutely no truth in this,” Modi said hours after a BCCI meeting on the IPL in Mumbai on Saturday.India remains the favoured host country for the IPL, and officials were hopeful of gaining ratification from home minister P Chidambaram of their revised schedule next week. But in a portent of what could be, Modi said contingency plans had been drawn up to ensure the tournament’s survival. “We have multiple iterations for multiple schedules with multiple possibilities,” he said. “We are taking every eventuality into account but let us not pre-empt anything.”Incidentally, eight members of the Mumbai Indians squad are in South Africa, for a training session in Durban ahead of the IPL. They will be trained by Shaun Pollock, who was recently signed on as the team’s mentor-cum-advisor, and Jonty Rhodes, the team’s fielding coach.

Stanford's business empire under scrutiny

Allen Stanford’s business empire is being investigated by three US regulatory bodies

Cricinfo staff13-Feb-2009Allen Stanford’s business empire is being investigated by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Florida Office of Financial Regulation in the USA.Stanford Investment Bank has $8.5 billion in assets and 30,000 clients. It is the interest rates offered to clients which have attracted the most concern, with some analysts pointing out that they are well above the industry norms.A Stanford spokesman dismissed the reports. “This is a rehash of old gossip and unsubstantiated allegations,” he said. “The Stanford Financial Group is rigorously managed and fully compliant with all US regulations. All three agencies have stated to us that they were visiting our offices as part of routine examinations.”Bloomberg News published what it claimed was a leaked email from Stanford to his staff. “We are all aware that former disgruntled employees have gone to the regulators questioning our work and our processes,” Stanford was reported as saying. “This could have compounded an otherwise routine examination.”
