Norwich fans excited by Steven Berghuis link

Many Norwich City supporters are excited after the Canaries were linked with a summer move for Netherlands international Steven Berghuis [Press Association, via BT].

Daniel Farke’s side enjoyed a superb 2020/21 season, sealing Championship title glory and booking an instant return to the Premier League. The aim now is for Norwich to cement themselves in the top flight rather than suffering the misery of another swift return to the second tier.

For that to happen, new signings are required this summer, with Farke looking to bring guaranteed quality into his squad, especially after losing last season’s star man Emiliano Buendia.

According to Midlands football writer Nick Mashiter on Twitter, Norwich are ‘keen’ on signing Berghuis from Feyenoord, having scored 19 goals and registered 13 assists in the Eredivisie last season, as well as representing Netherlands at Euro 2020.

The 29-year-old is seen as someone who can fill the Buendia-shaped void at Carrow Road, bringing creativity and goals to the team.

Waqar Younis was retained Pakistan captain till this September’s ICC Champions Trophy in Sri Lanka

Sports Reporter03-Aug-2002Waqar Younis was retained Pakistan captain till this September’s ICC Champions Trophy in Sri Lanka. The chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Lt Gen Tauqir Zia believed Friday that it was never a difficult decision to make.”The team is doing great and Waqar’s own performance is an inspiration for his boys. I don’t think it is a difficult decision to make,” Tauqir said.Waqar reached the peak of his brief captaincy’s tenure when he led Pakistan to a marvellous 2-1 victory over Australia in the Super Challenge Series-II in Australia.”Of course we are looking at Waqar as potential Pakistan captain for next year’s World Cup. But we have to stick to our policy of series-by-series appointments.”It gives the establishment as well as Waqar himself to monitor his progress. But so far, the PCB is absolutely satisfied with Waqar’s performance and of his team,” Tauqir said.Waqar will now spearhead Pakistan in this month’s Morocco Cup, the golden jubilee tournament in Kenya and finally the Champions Trophy. He will have a minimum of 10 one-day internationals and a maximum of 15 one-dayers to further consolidate his position as captain till the World Cup.”I can’t be more delighted. It is an honour that very few cricketers have got and I am one of them. “But I must thank my team-mates here without whose cooperation and support I have never been successful. Romano shares major manager news out of Spurs

Writing on Twitter, reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano has shared news of an announcement from Tottenham Hotspur involving Paulo Fonseca.

The Lowdown: Tottenham manager search over?

Tottenham have been without a head coach since they sacked Jose Mourinho back in late April with a plethora of names being linked to the role.

The likes of Julian Nagelsmann and Brendan Rodgers were early top contenders, but after Spurs failed to get anywhere with them, they turned their attention to other targets.

Spurs held talks with big name candidates like Mauricio Pochettino and Antonio Conte most recently but now all signs point towards the possible appointment of former Roma manager Paulo Fonseca.

The Latest: Romano drops major Fonseca claim…

Writing on Twitter, Romano has now shared a major update he’s hearing on Fonseca and the job at Tottenham Hotspur.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-2/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Indeed, the reporter claims that Fonseca is ‘set to sign’ his contract with Spurs with the club now ‘already planning’ for an official announcement and working on transfer strategy.

“Paulo Fonseca is set to sign his contract as new Tottenham head coach,” said Romano.

“Club now already planning for official announcement and transfers strategy together with the Portuguese manager.”

The Verdict: Right move?

After all the talk involving both Conte and Pochettino, Fonseca seems like quite a downgrade by comparison – but his style could actually be suited to Tottenham.

An experienced title-winning manager at previous club Shakhtar Donetsk, he also promotes an open, attacking brand of football and is known for promoting youth (Evening Standard) – fitting right into chairman Daniel Levy’s requirements going by his end of season letter to supporters.

While not the glamorous big name, there could be hope that Fonseca does in fact deliver at Tottenham.

Howey: Newcastle shouldn’t pay more than £25m for Joe Willock

Former Newcastle United defender Steve Howey has told The Transfer Tavern in an exclusive interview that his old side should not pay more than £25m for Arsenal’s Joe Willock.

Willock spent the second half of last season on loan at St. James’ Park, where he performed exceptionally well.

In 21 appearances, the 21-year-old midfielder managed to score eight goals, with seven out of the eight coming in seven consecutive games.

Willock is now being linked with a return to Newcastle, with The Sun recently reporting that he could cost up to £30m.

Speaking exclusively to TT about the player, Howey said:

“20, 25, that would be for me. I wouldn’t go any higher than that. I mean, he could turn out to be absolutely outstanding but, like all players, he could just go to the club after a very impressive loan spell and not do very well.”

The Sun also reports that manager Steve Bruce’s budget is set to be £50m, so Willock’s transfer could easily take half of that.

Even so, if the 2020/21 campaign is anything to go by, it still looks worth it. That knack Willock had for scoring goals from midfield, simply put, does not look like it is easy to find.

Newcastle takeover insight from Ashley

Lee Ryder has dropped some enticing insight on what Mike Ashley has told those close to the potential takeover of Newcastle United.

The Lowdown: Arbitration set

The arbitration hearing between the North East club and the Premier League is seemingly not far away at all, as Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie has reported that it is expected to begin at the end of June.

Ashley has also launched a separate anti-competition lawsuit against the English top flight over their decision-making process in the failed deal between him and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) consortium, which he is thought to be keeping in his back pocket in case the results of the arbitration proceedings do not go his way.

The Latest: Ashley insight

Writing in his latest piece for The Chronicle, Ryder has shared that Ashley has told those close to the potential deal that he remains ‘furious’ that the sale of the Tyneside club was blocked, and added that his ‘endgame’ is still to get the takeover bid to be pushed through.

Ryder also shared some insight into Ashley’s separate anti-competition claim, as the chief executive of Sports Direct will argue that the Premier League’s delaying of last summer’s takeover process was ‘on purpose’, and top-flight officials and CEO Richard Masters ‘knew’ that it would eventually hinder the sale.

The Verdict: Arbitration key

At the end of the day, Ashley’s feelings towards the Premier League over the failed takeover bid do not matter, so long as the St. James’ Park faithful can win the arbitration case.

If the results are positive for the Magpies, then the separate anti-competition claim would no longer be needed, and so the proposed deal between Ashley and the KSA group could be pushed one step closer to completion.

However, they would still need full cooperation from the top flight, and ideally would want to get any deal done as quick as possible, given that the summer transfer window has already begun and the new 2021/22 season is set to start in August.

With that in mind, Ashley will have to keep a lid on his fury – the last thing the club needs is their infamous owner chastising Masters and co any further.

Gers fans react to "Colts" news

Many Glasgow Rangers fans have been reacting to the news that Lowland League clubs have voted in favour of the Old Firm’s ‘Colts’ sides being introduced to their league from next season.

There has been plenty of discussion recently as to whether Rangers and Celtic should be allowed to have their second teams playing in the Scottish footballing pyramid. There is an argument that it would be lucrative for lower division sides to face an Old Firm outfit, while it could also offer much-needed senior experience for younger players at both clubs.

It has now been confirmed that the Lowland League clubs have voted to allow two new sides to enter the division. The proposed changes will be put to an AGM in two weeks’ time.

The news was shared on Twitter by journalist Raman Bhardwaj, and it attracted plenty of attention from Gers supporters. These fans took to the social media platform to share their thoughts.

Let’s see what these Rangers fans had to say on the Colts development

“Well done the Lowland League clubs. Nobody’s losing out or missing out on promotion etc. Teams will get extra income from bigger crowds and our boys will get great experience that they should have been getting had the old reserve league not been binned years ago!!”

Man City fans blast Ander Herrera

As Manchester City made history on Tuesday night, reaching their first ever Champions League final and overcoming Ligue 1 giants Paris-Saint Germain 4-1 on aggregate, many Sky Blues supporters took to social media and slammed Ander Herrera for his post-match comments.

Pep Guardiola’s men clinched a memorable 2-0 second leg victory at the Etihad Stadium thanks to a brace from star winger Riyad Mahrez and some heroic defending from the likes of Ruben Dias and John Stones.

The Algerian star was first there to pounce on a ricocheted Kevin De Bruyne effort to fire a neat finish through Keylor Navas’ legs.

As City sat back and waited for their next opportunity, the Sky Blues eventually found one in the form of a second half counter attack – with Phil Foden’s low cross then providing a tap-in for Mahrez to double their lead.

On an historic night for the club, however, many supporters took some anger out on Herrera following his post match message.

Despite the home side having more shots on target, efforts inside the box and big chances (SofaScore), the opposing midfielder and former Man United ace believes PSG were the ‘better side’ for a majority of the game (The Sun).

Flocking to his comments, many City supporters had their say – find a flavour of their comments from social media down below.

Bruno exalta Wellington Nem e vê Michel cabisbaixo no São Paulo

A briga será nossa.

Everton fans react to Son footage

Son Heung-min was pictured in tears after the final whistle after Tottenham were beaten in Sunday’s Carabao Cup final.

Aymeric Laporte scored an 82nd-minute winner for Manchester City, extending Spurs’ 13-year wait for a major trophy.

Son is still yet to win a piece of silverware in his professional career.

Why don’t Everton fans like Son?

The South Korea international is far from a popular player on the blue half of Merseyside. Back in November 2019, his challenge on Everton’s Andre Gomes led to a serious ankle injury for the Portuguese midfielder.

He was shown the red card and appeared to be devastated by the incident. Gomes would return to action the following February, having missed 109 days and 17 games.

Spurs promptly appealed the red card and successfully had Martin Atkinson’s decision overturned, meaning that Son escaped a three-match ban.

Twitter fan feed Toffee TV relayed the footage of the tearful Korean at the final whistle at Wembley yesterday, accompanied with a zipper-mouth emoji.

Here’s how Everton fans reacted, with sympathy in short supply.
