Newcastle star Joelinton showered with praise by Jurgen Klopp

As quoted by The Chronicle, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has given his seal of approval to Newcastle’s summer signing Joelinton.

What did he say?

The Brazilian arrived from Bundesliga side Hoffenheim in a club-record deal for the Magpies, and despite scoring just the once in the Premier League this season, has impressed with his general play.

Speaking after Liverpool secured a 3-1 win over the Magpies on Saturday, Klopp hailed the 23-year-old for his overall performance at Anfield.

He said: “Joelinton did outstanding. He is 100% made for the Premier League. If you had to replace Rondon, which is already difficult, then that was a good choice.

“He was a really good signing. If you lose Ayoze Perez and Rondon, and you are playing with Joelinton, Atsu and when he is not injured Saint-Maximin, if they want to play that way, they have the people for it. Joelinton is so demanding.”

High praise

Despite not being on the winning side, Newcastle’s big-money signing did himself no harm with his performance. Coming up against Ballon d’Or contender Virgil van Dijk, Joelinton struggled to really impose his game, but never shied away from the battle.

The Brazilian won eight aerial duels in total (only Joel Matip won more in the entire match), and produced two key passes for his teammates. As was to be expected at Anfield, Joelinton was starved of service as the Magpies were forced on to the back-foot for the majority of the game. But whenever he could, he made himself a nuisance for the Liverpool back-line, involving himself in 24 duels – a game-high.

So, as Klopp suggests, Newcastle have done particularly well in securing a signing who can give them the same physical presence as former striker Salomon Rondon. If he can improve his goal-record over the coming season, then he will be worth every single penny of his reported £40m fee.

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher claims Sadio Mane’s fitness could decide title race

Writing in his column for The Daily Telegraph, Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has voiced his concerns about the effect Sadio Mane’s possible fatigue could have on the Reds’ Premier League title challenge.

What did he say?

The Senegal international made it to the final of the Africa Cup of Nations with his country, but returned to training earlier than expected and has featured in all three of Liverpool’s opening games.

However, Carragher has now admitted he is worried Mane could suffer from burnout, and wondered just how much danger that could put the side’s title chances in.

He wrote: “Mane has become so important that Klopp is understandably reluctant to leave him out and let him have a proper rest. He has played in 53 club games since the start of the 2018-19 season. Of all the forwards throughout the entire Premier League, only Salah has played more than his 4,515 minutes.

“His (Klopp) use of Mane, unfortunately already suggests that Liverpool’s squad is not strong enough in the attacking positions. Mane himself has said that tiredness is only mental and that he has never had a holiday that lasts longer than 20 days since joining Red Bull Salzburg in 2012.

“I truly hope he is right but you cannot keep defying your body and my big worry is that there will be a drop off without a carefully scheduled rest. How Liverpool absorb either scenario could very well decide whether another Premier League challenge can be sustained.”

A bitter blow

Even a half-fit Sadio Mane would probably make Klopp’s starting eleven. The Senegalese star is a bundle of energy, and offers so much pace and trickery from out wide that there is such a significant drop-off in quality to the players who come in for him.

Watch the video below to see the most insane overhead kick you will see this week…

The Reds are undoubtedly in an incredibly difficult position. Manchester City have already shown in recent seasons how relentless they are, and any slip-up will be taken advantage of. If Klopp decides he needs to rest Mane, then he is hurting his team’s chances of picking up three points. Continue to play him however, and he risks exposing the winger to an injury that could rule him out for a significant period of time.

Depending on how the Champions League group stages pan out, the Liverpool boss’ best bet may be to rest the 27-year-old in those games. After all, it’s now the Premier League that the Merseyside club are hunting down.

Everton should steer clear of £35.7m-rated Marcel Brands favourite Santiago Arias

[ad_pod ]

According to El Gol Digital, Everton are willing to offer €40m (£35.7m) to Atletico Madrid for the services of right-back Santiago Arias.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the side from the Spanish capital only signed Arias last summer in a deal worth €11m (£9.8m), but they could yet land a huge profit on the Colombian after just a year of having him if the Toffees make good on their interest.

The 27-year-old make 31 appearances for Diego Simeone’s side last term, scoring one goal and recording one assist.

The fans in the video below had some very strong words for Michael Platini who was detained over alleged corruption this week…

Arias is highly rated by Everton’s Sporting Director Marcel Brands, who was key in tying the full-back down to a new deal when in a similar director position at PSV Eindhoven.

Brands said: “He is the perfect model of the modern defender: pacy, powerful and attack-minded. There are not many players with such qualities.”

Everton should steer clear

Whilst he is clearly a player of some pedigree given the fact he is at a Champions League club, Everton shouldn’t pursue this deal.

Firstly, £35.7m is a lot of money to pay when the Toffees already have two options at right-back for the upcoming season in Seamus Coleman and Mason Holgate. Secondly, despite Brands loving the player, he would be going against his own vision for the club if Arias was signed.

Watch Everton Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Brands said back in April that the Merseysiders would be looking to invest big money in players who are in the age bracket of 20-25/26, so signing Arias for such a huge fee wouldn’t make much sense as he is 27.

They also look close to completing the £22m signing of Andre Gomes whilst talks have opened with Chelsea for the signing of Kurt Zouma, who presumably won’t come cheap given his £25m valuation on Transfermarkt.

Given Gomes and Zouma’s impact whilst on loan last term, they should prioritise getting them over the line before any other deal right now.

No matter how highly Brands rates Arias, this isn’t a deal that the Toffees should be doing.

How does Everton target Badou Ndiaye compare up against Idrissa Gueye?

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In Numbers series, which takes a statistical look at performances, season-long form and reported transfer targets…

Idrissa Gueye and Badou Ndiaye. Both are central midfielders. They are also both Senegal internationals.

But could they soon become teammates?

Turkish outlet Fanatik has linked the 5 foot 11 Stoke man with a move to Goodison Park this summer, just a year-and-a-half on from joining the Potters in a £14m deal from Galatasaray.

Thogden challenged himself to DM 100 footballers on Instagram. Find out who replied in the video below…

It was with the Turkish giants where the 28-year-old spent the entirety of last season on loan, and judging by his statistics on WhoScored, there are some similarities with Gueye other than just their position and their nationality.

Both appear to be industrial midfielders who enjoy disrupting the opposition – Ndiaye’s 2.6 tackles per game reinforces this point, as does Gueye’s average of 4.3. Their fouls per game averages of 1.4 and 1.6 respectively also suggests that they enjoy breaking up play.

However, whilst the pair are similar in that regard as well as their physical attributes, Ndiaye could offer Marco Silva a more adventurous midfield option if he arrived at Goodison Park.

The Senegal star seems to be a more forward-thinking player to Gueye, and could be a useful option for the Toffees if they wanted to start with two solid defensive midfielders but also have some form of goal threat out of the pairing.

Ndiaye takes 1.4 shots per game, which is more than double Gueye’s average of 0.6, whereas his three goals and three assists from last term compared to the former Aston Villa man’s zero goals and two assists does bolster the fact that the Stoke ace prefers to push on.

Currently, Silva has something good going on in midfield with Andre Gomes and Idrissa Gueye complementing each other well in there – it is a partnership that proved last season to be an effective one given their contrasting abilities.

However, for games which require a bit more physicality and brute, Ndiaye can offer Silva something a bit different.

Liverpool fans shower praise on departing "legend" Sturridge

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Liverpool fans have been reacting to the confirmed departure of Daniel Sturridge, and they’ve got nothing but good things to say about the striker.

Sturridge and Alberto Moreno will both leave Anfield when their contracts expire this summer, the club confirmed on their official Twitter account.

“Everyone wishes Daniel and Alberto all the very best for their futures. They will always be a part of the LFC Family,” a club statement said.

And it’s fair to say that sentiment has been echoed for both players by the fans on social media, but for Sturridge in particular.

“The worst we’ve played all season” but “our most straightforward final since 2003” – a Liverpool fan reflects on the UCL final in the video below…

The 29 year-old joined when top four was the only goal each season and major trophies were a pipe dream, but enjoyed a stunning 2013/14 season alongside Luis Suarez.

Injuries have hampered his progress since then, but fans are delighted he will leave on a high as a European champion.

Bad news for Van Aanholt! Crystal Palace target Luton’s James Justin

[ad_pod ]

According to Football Insider, Crystal Palace are one of three top flight clubs set to join Aston Villa in the hunt for Luton Town’s James Justin, who has enjoyed a brilliant season with the League One winners.

The right-footer is predominantly left sided, with Jack Stacey occupying the right-back spot, and his arrival at Selhurst Park could therefore represent a threat to Patrick van Aanholt, whose 2018/19 wasn’t so impressive.

What’s the news?

Well, Football Insider reports that the versatile Justin is also a target for Leicester, Southampton, Fulham and Villa, who have already tabled a £7.5m bid this summer.

The local lad made an impressive 52 appearances for the newly-promoted Hatters in all competitions, scoring three goals and chalking up nine assists, incredible creative numbers for a full-back.

He now looks likely to leave Kenilworth Road in the coming months with his contract expiring next summer.

Palace have started to put some emphasis on developing young talent in recent seasons, with the meteoric rise of Aaron Wan-Bissaka the chief example, and Justin could become the next young star to flourish at Selhurst Park, albeit at the expense of van Aanholt.

A problem for PVA

The former Sunderland man’s pace and surprising finishing ability make him a threat on the front foot but his defensive ineptitude has cost his side at times this season, with the Dutch international far too often losing track of his man or being caught out of position.

It’s something that many of the SE25 faithful have picked up on and it’s safe to say that they would welcome an upgrade…

Are Crystal Palace right to slap a £100m valuation on Wilfried Zaha’s head? Check out the video below to see why they are…

Despite having wrestled the starting left-back spot from fellow January 2017 arrival Jeffrey Schlupp over the course of the past couple of years, the player’s poor form has sometimes led Roy Hodgson to start right-back Joel Ward in his place this season for more defensive stability.

Clearly the 5 ft 10 ace’s place in the back four isn’t guaranteed and the arrival of a young, hungry rival could see him relegated to the bench permanently if Justin can find his feet in the top flight.

Another waste: West Brom fans bemoan Rekeem Harper contract situation

[ad_pod ]

Rekeem Harper was left out of West Brom’s starting XI to face Aston Villa last Saturday as Jimmy Shan preferred a midfield of Stefan Johansen, Chris Brunt and Matt Phillips.

However, it wasn’t a decision that paid off, with Albion missing energy in midfield.

Speaking after the game, Jimmy Shan hinted that the 19-year-old was left out for tactical reasons. This came after he’d attracted interest from Tottenham and Norwich, per The Sun on Sunday (3rd May, page 68) and The Sun (10 May, page 57).

Reacting to an article posted on Twitter by journalist Matt Wilson, Albion fans were quick to lament Harper following the news.

One supporter claimed he was like Saido Berahino, making reference to his poor attitude. Another suggested that the midfielder’s head had been turned.

A further fan urged for faith to be put in Sam Field, saying he actually wanted to play for the club.

Harper has had a breakthrough campaign at the Hawthorns, appearing in 16 Championship games. However, he’s only contributed one goal and a single assist in that time.

The midfielder clearly still has a long way to go but it appears some Albion fans don’t want his future to be at the club.

Here’s the best of the reaction.

Andre Gomes struggles to impress in audition against Spurs

[ad_pod ]

Andre Gomes came on as a substitute for Everton against Tottenham Hotspur on the final day aware that, next season, he could be playing for the opposition.

Gomes has been heavily linked with a move to Spurs and Sport asserted earlier this week that a deal was all but done: personal terms, they believe, have been agreed and the player’s parent club, Barcelona, are ready to accept an offer in the region of €30million (£26m).

On the chalkboard

Gomes came on with the score at 1-0 to Spurs, replacing Idrissa Gueye in midfield.

Theo Walcott equalised for Everton shortly after before Cenk Tosun gave the Toffees an unlikely lead.

Gomes then gave away a free-kick on the edge of the box and Christian Eriksen scored, earning his side a point and securing qualification to the Champions League next season.

Gomes’ cameo was rather uneventful apart from his inadvertent assist, however.

Per WhoScored, he touched the ball just 23 times, made 18 passes, of which 15 were successful, and won one of the two aerial duels he contested.

He did not make a dribble, nor did he win a tackle or make an interception. He was dribbled past once.

If this was an audition, it did not go well.

Not what Spurs need

It remains to be seen if a deal will actually be struck between Barcelona and Spurs for Gomes but there can be much agreement about the state of his career at Camp Nou prior to this season.

Everton’s signing of both Gomes and Yerry Mina appeared to rid Barca of two of their highest-profile flops and the former has yet to truly adjust to life in England.

Across a total of 29 appearances, he has scored one goal and provided two assists.

This is not a player who thrives in the final third, nor is he of intense physicality either, so replacing Mousa Dembele in the heart of Tottenham midfield looks to be a remarkably tough ask.

Mauricio Pochettino has worked wonders with less adept players before; he may have to do so again here.

With the Argentine watching on from the sideline Gomes had the perfect opportunity to make a telling impression on Sunday.

But this was a stuttering audition which didn’t lend Pochettino reason to believe that the playmaker can make an impact in north London.

Perhaps Gomes has already done enough throughout the season to swing the decision in his favour.
