Emerson badly let Spurs down v Watford

With Antonio Conte’s Tottenham Hotspur side heading into Saturday’s Premier League clash with Watford off the back of a disappointing 1-1 draw against 10-man Southampton last time out, the 52-year-old would have been hoping for a much-improved display at Vicarage Road this afternoon.

While the Italian would have certainly enjoyed the match a great deal more if his side had managed to seal all three points slightly earlier, Spurs nevertheless came away with maximum points thanks to Davinson Sanchez’s dramatic 96th-minute winner, with the game ending 1-0.

However, despite the victory, there were still a number of performances within the team which will have given Conte cause from concern, with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Sergio Reguilon and Emerson Royal all enduring something of an afternoon to forget against Watford.

It will undoubtedly be the latter of this trio who would have been most disappointed with his own display on the bus home from Vicarage Road on Saturday evening.

Lost the ball every 5.4 touches

While Emerson’s metrics over his 90 minutes on the pitch were not overly disastrous, the wing-back’s wastefulness in the final third was undeniably the 22-year-old’s downfall against Watford.

Indeed, the £22.5m-rated man had a whopping 113 touches of the ball, but he found his intended target with just four of his 13 attempted crosses and lost possession a whopping 21 times, meaning that he ceded possession with every 5.4 touches.

This is something which was also picked up by the Evening Standard’s Dan Kilpatrick, who awarded the defender a five in his player ratings, as well as stating of the £62k-per-week right-back’s performance: “No-one was allowed more space and time in the final third but the Brazilian put in a succession of poor crosses. You couldn’t escape the feeling that Watford knew he wasn’t much of a threat.”

As such, it is unavoidable that Emerson’s poor decision making in the final third of the pitch badly let his side down on Saturday despite Tottenham’s ultimate victory, and is an area of his game that the Brazil international must improve if he is to finally disprove Kieron Dyer’s claim that he is “miles off it” for Spurs.

Bernard's six seals Jamaica's dominance

A round-up of the fourth day’s action of the third round of the WICB Four-Day Competition 2009-10

Cricinfo staff26-Jan-2010A six-wicket haul by David Bernard guided Jamaica to an innings and 27-run win against Guyana in St Phillip. Resuming on 161 for 4 after being asked to follow-on, Guyana were bowled out for 236. Nikita Miller gave Jamaica the first breakthrough in the second over of the morning when he had Sewnarine Chattergoon caught at short midwicket. A double-strike by Bernard set them back further to 173 for 7. Guyana resisted for an hour and a quarter with a stand of 58 between Davendra Bishoo and Veerasammy Permaul. Odean Brown had Bishoo caught at long-on for 18 before Bernard added the finishing touches. Jamaica, on top with 36 points, have drawn a bye in the next round, starting on Friday.”We talked to a few of the Barbadian players, and they told usthat the pitch would be slow and would turn a bit, so it was surprising tosee them win the toss and put us in to bat,” Jamaica captain Tamar Lambert told CMC. “Knowing Guyana through the years, they always pack their sides with spinners, so I thought that they would have batted first, and then bring their players into play over the last few days of the game.”Guyana captain Chattergoon reflected on a poor performance. “I thought our fielding let us down when Jamaica batted, and from there we were always behind in the game,” he said. “Our batting also let us down badly in both innings. It’s not going to getany easier, since Narsingh Deonarine is going to be travelling to Australiawith West Indies for the next match, and Shivnarine Chanderpaul andRamnaresh Sarwan are still injured.”We have a couple of new players that will join the squad forthe next match, and although this may look like adversity, it presents anopportunity for them to make a name for themselves.”Trinidad and Tobago came close to pulling off an unlikely win at the Kensington Oval, but Barbados’ ninth-wicket pair of Kemar Roach and Patrick Browne hung on for a close draw. Resuming overnight on 299 for 7, Denesh Ramdin completed his century and carried on to 166 before T&T declared at 412 for 8. Chasing 298, a draw seemed certain when Barbados proceeded to 95 for 2 at tea. But legspinner Imran Khan started a collapse when he had the captain Ryan Hinds (42) caught at cover with the score on 158 for 3, breaking a stand of 88 for the third wicket with opener Jason Haynes. Soon after, Haynes was run out for 83 by a direct hit from Rayad Emrit from deep square leg while attempting a second run. He had faced 178 balls and hit seven fours. Kevin Stoute was caught by the substitute Richard Kelly in the deep off Imran with the score at 175 for 5 and four runs later, Kelly’s accurate throw to the bowler’s end ran out Dwayne Smith for 11.In Imran’s next over, Nikolai Charles swept straight into the hands of Emrit at square leg for a duck and Barbados were in trouble at 179 for 7, before Tino Best was caught at slip. Browne and Roach then batted out the last five overs to deny T&T a victory.”This was a great effort from the Trinidad and Tobago team and everyoneplayed a part in helping us come so close to what would have been amemorable victory,” the captain Daren Ganga said. “We knew once we had Barbados batting second and we pushed the panic button we could get a result. We didn’t get the 10 wickets but this is a good comeback and we will use it as motivation going forward in the upcoming matches.”It was a good batting pitch so we knew we had to set a targetwhich would put pressure on Barbados and we were one bowler short with RaviRampaul unable to bowl in the match. We got three points and they got six but we ended on a high and we are happy about that.”

Lonwijk is impressing for Fortuna Sittard

With the January transfer window fast appoaching, Bruno Lage and Jeff Shi will be starting to consider players who they could look to bring into Wolverhampton Wanderers in order to give the club the best possible chance of securing a top-half finish in the Premier League this season.

One such position will almost certainly be centre-back, with summer signing Yerson Mosquera being ruled out of action until at least February as a result of a hamstring injury, and both Willy Boly and Romain Saiss more than likely being unavailable for selection in January due to their potential involvement in the Africa Cup of Nations.

As such, Lage could well be left with just Conor Coady and Max Kilman as senior options for his three-man defence, something that would undoubtedly be a disaster for the 45-year-old manager.

However, before dipping into the transfer market, perhaps Lage and Shi should consider an option much closer to home – figurative speaking, at least – in the shape of Nigel Lonwijk.

Lonwijk could save Wolves millions

Having joined Wolves from PSV Eindhoven back in January of 2020, there was a considerable amount of hype about the 19-year-old centre-back, with Shi himself stating of the youngster’s signing: “To be able to get somebody of Nigel’s quality across the line was really pleasing and we’re delighted with the signing.

“He’s very good physically, a good defender one-v-one, and has strong technical ability, so we very much see him fitting into how our system as an outside centre-back. He’s got good physicality as well, so ticks the boxes in many of the things we’re looking for in terms of our centre-back positions.”

However, while it is not particularly unusual for a teenager making a move to England from another country, the £90k-rated defender is still yet to make a first-team appearance for the club, being sent on loan to Eredivisie side Fortuna Sittard for the 2021/22 campaign in order to continue his development in senior football.

And, if the 19-year-old’s most recent performance against PEC Zwolle is anything to go by, it would very much appear as if the youngster would make an extremely useful addition to Lage’s current options in the heart of his Wolves defence this winter.

Indeed, over the course of his 90 minutes on the pitch, the former Netherlands U16 international made a whopping 14 clearances, two interceptions, one tackle and won an incredible 11 of his 15 attempted duels.

Aside from this defensive masterclass, the 6 foot 3 centre-back also scored the match-winning goal for Fortuna, while his overall display saw him earn a SofaScore match rating of 8.3 – the highest of any player to feature in the fixture.

As such, with it being clear for all to see that Wolves are in desperate need of defensive reinforcements this January, bringing Lonwijk back to Molineux would very much look to be a smart move by both Lage and Shi, as, should the defender indeed impress when given a chance in the first-team, he could well go on to save Fosun millions of pounds in transfer fees this winter.

West Ham fans excited by Ogbonna news

Flocking to Twitter, many West Ham United fans have been left excited by an update involving defender Angelo Ogbonna.

The Italian, currently sidelined due to an ACL injury, as confirmed by the club, will be a sore miss for manager David Moyes as he aims to maintain his side’s impressive start to 2021/2022.

Having just beaten Liverpool 3-2 at the London Stadium, West Ham are also top of their Europa League group and into the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.

Losing Ogbonna will come as a bitter blow to their fight on all fronts but some positive news has now emerged on the 33-year-old and his contract situation in east London.

Currently set to expire in 2022, West Ham risk losing Italian on a free deal next summer as things stand, but Calciomercato say this won’t be the case for long.

According to their sources, Ogbonna is in fact ‘close to renewing his contract’ with Moyes potentially set for a major boost in that regard.

Flocking to this claim, it’s little wonder West Ham supporters have become excited on Twitter given how crucial of a first team player he has been for Moyes over the past year.

Only ex-Hammer Fabian Balbuena averaged a higher rate of clearances per 90 in the Premier League last term and Ogbonna is one of just eight West Ham untouchables to start every English top-flight match this season (WhoScored).

Newcastle: Eddie Howe must axe Clark

Eddie Howe has officially been confirmed as the new manager of Newcastle United and replaces interim boss Graeme Jones with immediate effect.

Jones took charge of three games following Steve Bruce’s exit last month, drawing 1-1 with Crystal Palace and Brighton away from home either side of a 3-0 defeat to Chelsea at St. James’ Park.

Howe arrives with the team sat 19th in the Premier League table and without a single win in 11 matches so far this season.

An instant impact?

The ex-Bournemouth head coach could make himself an instant crowd favourite by making one key selection decision in his first match in charge. He must ruthlessly axe centre-back Ciaran Clark from the starting XI as he has been a liability for the club this season and fans will surely be frustrated by his performances.

Clark’s latest outing ended with him giving away a penalty against Brighton in the Premier League. He committed a foul inside the box, albeit a soft one, with Leandro Trossard converting from 12-yards to hand Graham Potter’s side the lead, although the defender did his part to make up for the error by setting up Isaac Hayden’s equaliser.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/check-out-the-latest-newcastle-howe-ter-stegen” title= “Read the latest Newcastle news!”]

However, his assist was not enough to detract from the poor standard of his displays this season. He has averaged a dismal SofaScore rating of 6.66 across nine starts, which places him 13th in the Newcastle squad overall – below both Federico Fernandez and Fabian Schar. Clark has been keeping the pair out of the side, yet his statistics suggest that he should be the one sitting on the bench in their place.

Those are sentiments that Magpies reporter George Caulkin agrees with. He tweeted during the Brighton match on Saturday: “I don’t understand how Clark, who gave the penalty away, has kept his place in recent matches.”

The £37k-per-week Irishman is putting in disappointing showings on the pitch and fans will surely be frustrated that he is continuing to be selected as potentially better options in Schar and Fernandez wait in the wings. Schar has averaged a rating of 6.75 in the Premier League whilst his Argentine teammate has managed a score of 6.78, suggesting that both of them have played to a higher standard than Clark.

Therefore, Howe could instantly win over the crowd and become a favourite by dropping the dud and starting Fernandez or Schar in place of him for the match against Brentford after the international break. With no wins in 11 matches, something has to change for Newcastle and this move could be the first one Howe makes in order to benefit the side.

Taylor double puts Leicestershire in control

A round-up of the action from the second day of County Championship matches

Cricinfo staff01-Aug-2009Division OneMichael Di Venuto scored a career-best 254 not out to lead Durham to 473 for 4 before they declared against Sussex at Chester-le-Street. The hosts, who were on 264 for 2 overnight, lost Gordon Muchall soon after the start, which was delayed by rain to 12.20 pm, but Di Venuto and Dale Benkenstein added 173 for the fourth wicket to put Durham in command. Di Venuto scored Durham’s second-best first-class score and the only chance he had during his innings was on 180 when Ollie Rayner dropped a tough catch at first slip .An interruption for bad light forced Durham to declare in order to have as much time as possible attacking the Sussex batsmen. Michael Yardy led Sussex’s steady reply, remaining unbeaten on 54, but the visitors lost Chris Nash, lbw to Callum Thorp, for 19. Ed Joyce played fluently but had to retire hurt on 32 after getting hit on the elbow by Steve Harmison. Sussex ended the day on 119 for 1.Somerset’s bowlers struck timely blows on a rain-shortened day at Taunton to reduce Nottinghamshire to 77 for 3 at stumps. Andy Caddick had Matthew Wood caught by Arul Suppiah and had Paul Franks caught behind to reduce the visitors to 37 for 2. Suppiah took another catch off the bowling of Charl Willoughby to nip a budding partnership by dismissing Adam Voges for 10. Earlier in the day, Somerset had declared on 401 for 8 after resuming on the second morning at 316 for 5. Ryan Sidebottom competed his five-wicket haul while Peter Trego was unbeaten on 66.There was no play on the second day between Worcestershire and Warwickshire at New Road because of rain.Click here for John Ward’s report from the second day between Lancashire and Yorkshire at Old TraffordDivision TwoGraham Wagg and Tim Groenewald took all seven Kent wickets to fall on the second day Canterbury, reducing them to 249 for 8, to give Derbyshire a chance of securing a first-innings lead. Wagg, who picked up 5 for 83, took his first three wickets with medium pace before turning to left-arm spin for his last two scalps. Groenewald took the other two, finishing with 3 for 67. Kent were struggling at 135 for 6, after Justin Kemp walked across his stumps and was bowled around his legs by Wagg, when James Tredwell and Ryan McLaren added 58 for the seventh wicket. It was then that Wagg decided to resort to spin and trapped McLaren leg before for 29. Wayne Parnell was caught at mid-off soon after but Tredwell dug in and remained unbeaten on 67, with Kent still trailing Derbyshire by 54.A strong performance from the Middlesex top order has given their team the advantage against Northamptonshire at Lord’s. After taking the final Northamptonshire wicket – David Lucas lbw to Tim Murtagh – for no addition to the overnight score of 288, Middlesex’s openers, Sam Robson and Nick Compton, added 167 for the first wicket. It was Middlesex’s highest opening partnership of the season. Robson made 75 and Compton a more aggressive 82 off 94 (he had reached his fifty off only 46) balls to put his team in control. However, their dismissals came in a short span of time and though Eoin Morgan held one end up with 71, the Northamptonshire bowlers chipped away at the other, reducing the hosts to 310 for 6 before rain stopped play. Middlesex will hope that their lower-batsmen stick around long enough to help build a sizeable lead.James Taylor became the first teenager to score a double-century for Leicestershire and led his team into a commanding position against Surrey by the end of the second day at The Oval. Taylor, who resumed this morning on 52, scored an unbeaten 207 while Tom New made 53 and Jacques du Toit, who was playing his first Championship game of the season, cracked 100 off only 123 balls. Leicestershire added 303 runs for the loss of only one wicket, with Taylor and du Toit adding 230 in only 42 overs, before declaring on 593 for 5, giving their bowlers a little more than two days to dismiss Surrey twice. Rain , however, ensured that Surrey did not have to bat today. The second day’s play between Gloucestershire and Glamorgan in Bristol was severely truncated by rain. Gloucestershire were comfortably placed at 337 for 5 at the end of the first day but Glamorgan’s bowlers fought back on the second, limiting the hosts to 400 for 9 before they declared. Glamorgan’s openers, Gareth Rees and Warren Bragg, added 35 runs before play ended.
