PSL mulls sixth team but franchises opposed to move

The PCB is considering the prospect of adding another team to the Pakistan Super League with the possibility of the sixth team being named Kashmir, after the territory of Pakistan-administered Kashmir in Pakistan

Umar Farooq09-May-2016The PCB is considering the prospect of adding another team to the Pakistan Super League with the possibility of the sixth team being named Kashmir, after the territory of Pakistan-administered Kashmir in Pakistan. The move looks unlikely, however, for different reasons: opposition from some of the current franchises on financial grounds and the potential for controversy given Kashmir’s sensitive status vis-a-vis India. The current structure of the PSL comprises five teams whose names are derived from provincial capitals – Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad, Quetta and Peshawar. According to a contract signed between the PCB and the franchises, the number of teams cannot be increased until the third edition.Sethi had tweeted last month: “My dream is to launch 6th Kashmir team in PSL this year. Hope our five franchisee partners will support me in this initiative.” Peshawar Zalmi team owner Javed Afridi supported Sethi’s initiative but the other teams were not as enthused. Sethi said Kashmir, Faisalabad, Sialkot and Gilgit-Baltistan were in the fray for the potential team.”We will not have [a new team] until the third year that is written,” Sethi confirmed in an exclusive interview with ESPNcricinfo. “But at the same time we are looking at the financials about the addition of a sixth team, in terms of whether it will be Kashmir, Faisalabad, Sialkot or Gilgit-Baltistan or any other team. That decision is pending. We have to weigh up the pros and cons and that’s the issue right now but we cannot have it until franchises agree. Without their consent we can’t make it.”The opposition from the franchises is centered around the potential cut in their share from the central revenue pool. After the inaugural edition of the PSL, 70% of the revenue was split equally among the five franchises and the percentage would have been higher had the tournament been held in Pakistan instead of the UAE. Sethi said he was trying to convince teams that the addition of a sixth side would benefit them.”Of course we have to offer guarantee to the teams that they will be better by having a sixth team and have to convince them. I have my team working on different values and estimated profits and revenues before pitching this idea to them but this idea is definitely under consideration. Basically the advice from our finance department is that this is the high time to add sixth team as the values are very high at this stage before the second edition. We have to cash in the hype we have created from the first edition and this may or may go down next year.”The PCB regulates the franchises and manages the day-to day-cash flow, bearing the cost of logistics and payment to foreign and local players to avoid any dispute. Sethi confirmed the spending cap of each franchise, currently placed at US$1.2m, has been increased by 10% for the second season.Najam Sethi confirmed the possibility of creating a sixth team to boost the league’s valuation•AFPIn a recent PCB meeting, Sethi, who is also head of the central executive committee, made a bid to register PSL as an independent entity, primarily to cut down on hefty taxes paid by the Pakistan board and the franchises. Sethi took up the case with the finance ministry, but the negotiations fell through; the only concession was the overseas players getting a tax-free salary.”The idea is to make it a non-profit, registering it as separate company, to allow PCB to re-invest the net profits into development of cricket,” Sethi said. “Right now it is still in the pipeline and may not be an easy task. Although we sought seed money from the PCB budget for the first edition, we will have our own budgets from next year. We thought it will be a PCB-owned company but absolutely independent, and whatever money PSL makes it will go down into development which will be exempted from tax.”According to Sethi the first edition of the league generated $11.4million in revenue which is 30% higher in value than the estimated $8.02million. He admitted direct and operational expenditures had increased from $7.71million to $8.93million but PCB still manage to produce an estimated profit of $2.47million. The tournament operations were started with approximately $3-4m of seed money from the PCB’s budget and more income was generated after selling the five teams for $9.3 million.”We have beaten our own expectations and the asset value of each team has increased drastically,” Sethi said. “Teams aren’t really making profit right now from the market and they need time to make themselves a proper brand but their asset value has gone up significantly. If anyone of the team want to sell their team they can get hike of one million in their original price, which is a welcoming sign. They incurred some loses and we have covered it up from our own PCB’s central pool and gave them $400,000 each apart from the 70% of our revenues from broadcaster, gate money, title sponsorship etc.”Sharing key figures from the financial report, Sethi said: “We sold franchises in $9.3million with the first year and revenue from other means was $2.11million for the first edition. We spent $1.22million extra from our estimated budget $7.71m; the expenditures were $4.71m in direct and $4.22m in operational cost which is mainly because of the high value of renting the stadium in UAE which cost us $3.27m (Dubai and Sharjah).”The PCB is also mooting workshops to give franchises an understanding on how to leverage their business further and explore different revenue streams at a time when they are yet to break even. “Teams should be profitable by the third year,” he said. “We have been insisting that merchandising is a key revenue stream for them. That is directly linked to the marketability of the franchise and so far Peshawar is the only team that has done fairly well in this regard. We also need them to step up and market themselves better.”

Paul Best, the Warwickshire slow left-arm spinner, has been forced to retire after an injury-plagued two years. He travelled to the club’s pre-season tour to the Caribbean but decided his body was not up to professional sport.Best, 24, scored a first-class century for Cambridge MCCU in a famous win over Surrey, who were captained by Kevin Pietersen. Best also took a five-for against Essex and briefly tasted first XI action with Warwickshire.”The stress fractures I have had to endure the last two seasons have taken their toll on my body and I do not believe I can perform to the level I have in the past,” Best said. “I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Warwickshire both as a professional and an age-group player and I would like to thank everyone involved for their invaluable support.”Warwickshire director of cricket Dougie Brown added: “Paul was an outstanding junior cricketer, having captained England U19s and having been part of the Bears squad that reached the Clydesdale Bank 40 over Final at Lord’s in 2012. His back injury struck at just the wrong time in his development as a professional cricketer and his first team appearances have been limited over recent seasons as a result.”Best appears well-placed for a career outside cricket, having graduated from Homerton college, Cambridge with a degree in Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic.

Prime Bank strengthen title chances

Prime Bank Cricket Club put themselves in a strong position to win their maiden Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League title with a 20-run win over Mohammedan Sporting Club in the competition’s penultimate round of Super League matches. They are now on 24 points, two points ahead of Prime Doleshwar Sporting Club while Abahani remain on 20 points. This means that in the last round on Sunday, a win over Abahani will make Prime Bank champions. But if they lose and Prime Doleshwar beat Mohammedan Sporting Club, the title will be decided over net run-rate. The head-to-head record, the first criteria for deciding between teams with equal points, is equal for Prime Bank and Prime Doleshwar who beat each other once in the first phase and Super League.Prime Bank won the battle of the all-round performances with Mohammedan as Farhad Reza’s performance outdid Mashrafe Mortaza’s.Farhad struck 76 off 56 balls with eight fours and four sixes after Prime Bank slipped to 144 for 7 in the 38th over. He added 46 for the eighth wicket with Taijul Islam and 40 for the ninth wicket with Taskin Ahmed to help the side score a below-par 230, a score that had seemed improbable after Mashrafe’s four-wicket haul.Mohammedan’s chase was stuttering at 91 for 6 in the 22nd over when Mashrafe joined Ariful Haque at the crease. The pair added 110 for the seventh wicket with Mashrafe making 62 off 76 balls with five fours and four sixes.Prime Bank were back in the game after that wicket and it was Farhad’s double-wicket over, which included the wicket of Ariful who made 60 off 70 balls, that gave Prime Bank the crucial win. Mohammedan lost their last four wickets for just nine runs in the space of 18 balls. There was more drama at the Shere Bangla National Stadium where Kalabagan Cricket Academy ended Abahani‘s title hopes with a one-wicket victory.Nasir Hossain’s first century of the season got Abahani close to a big score in the slog overs, but they ended up on a modest 247 for 9 in 50 overs. They were comfortably placed at 202 for 3 in the 43rd over but lost their last six wickets for 42 runs. The collapse was Sabbir Rahman’s doing, as he bowled legspin after more than a year and finished with 6 for 43 from 10 overs, his best List-A bowling performance.Abahani were never out of the game, and took wickets at regular intervals as KCA struggled to put a partnership together. Abahani could have thought of two points when they took the sixth wicket in the 38th over with the score at 156, but Mahmudul Hasan and Irfan Sukkur batted valiantly in fading light. The pair used the sweep shot and the inside-out over cover to get boundaries as they added 64 for the seventh wicket and swung the game KCA’s way. Abahani fielded laboriously throughout the stand, giving away needless singles and doubles. With 28 runs to win, Mahmudul fell trying to sweep Mosaddek Hossain, caught at short fine-leg after making 82 off 107 balls with seven boundaries. Irfan, however, held firm as he farmed the strike with the tail-enders. He struck his only six of the innings when KCA needed 13 off nine balls, and though Mehrab Hossain was run-out attempting a second off the next ball, the six had deflated Abahani. At the start of the last over, Irfan struck Mosaddek over cover once again, and after playing out three more dot balls, slammed him straight for the winning run.The Abahani supporters were irate and some of their anger was directed towards the decision to give Mosaddek, who had bowled just five overs this season, the vital last over. The story was completely different in Fatullah where Prime Doleshwar Sporting Club crushed Legends of Rupganj by eight wickets.Batting first, Rupganj made 221 for 9 in 50 overs with Abul Hasan’s 51 the top score of the innings. Delwar Hossain, Asif Ahmed and Elias Sunny took two wickets each. But the match belonged to Mehedi Maruf who struck his second century of the league. He made 118 off 119 deliveries with 14 fours and three sixes. He first shared a 61-run opening stand with Rony Talukdar, before adding 135 runs for the second wicket with Mominul Haque, who made his first fifty in the Dhaka Premier League. The two points kept Prime Doleshwar in the hunt but they now need to win their next game handsomely and hope Prime Bank lose their match in Mirpur.

Amla likely to take Test reins

Hashim Amla is expected to be announced as South Africa’s next Test captain when the new leader is unveiled following a CSA board meeting tomorrow

Firdose Moonda02-Jun-2014Hashim Amla is expected to be announced as South Africa’s next Test captain when the new leader is unveiled following a CSA board meeting tomorrow. Amla, who made a trip back home from his stint with Surrey for the CSA awards on Wednesday, made himself available for the job last month and is considered the frontrunner for the role, ahead of AB de Villiers. In addition to announcing the new Test captain on Tuesday, South Africa will also name their ODI and Test squads for next month’s tour of Sri Lanka. Kallis, who still aims to play in the 2015 World Cup, should be part of the fifty-over outfit, and there are some new faces expected among the Test players. A rookie spinner, in either Simon Harmer or Dane Piedt, is likely to travel to Sri Lanka and a specialist batsman could also be part of the touring party. Stiaan van Zyl, Quinton de Kock and Justin Ontong are among the candidates under consideration.Amla’s surprise interest in the job was made public after CSA chief executive Haroon Lorgat urged the national selectors not to have an “automatic choice” for Graeme Smith’s successor and to consider all options. By then, de Villiers had already declared himself “ready” for the role and was widely thought to be competing with Faf du Plessis, who is now effectively out of contention.Du Plessis leads the Twenty20 side and, although his Test-match temperament has been impressive, he is a relative newcomer to the longest format. The experience of de Villiers and Amla, who have both been international cricketers for 10 years and have played 168 Tests between them, made them more viable options. Amla is expected to get the nod over de Villiers, in part because South Africa want to “maintain the stability of the side by retaining de Villiers as wicket-keeper and not forcing him to give up the gloves to captain,” according to an insider, and despite Amla’s initial reluctance to captain. But last month Amla u-turned on that and explained he saw a gap, caused by the retirements of Smith and Jacques Kallis, which he could fill. “I have always stayed away from taking the leadership role but now that we have lost two core members I think it is a good time for me, if appointed, to add value to the team,” he said in a radio interview. It is believed Amla was convinced to make himself available by administrators who hope to tick two boxes by appointing him. It will also ease the political pressure on CSA to accelerate the rate of transformation.Although there are no official quotas placed on national teams, there is an expectancy from government that sports federations will show a commitment to change. Before South Africa’s general elections last month, sports minister Fikile Mbalula threatened to impose a 60% player of colour quota on all teams and those who failed to meet it could risk not receiving government funding and being banned from competing internationally. Mbalula, who remains in the post after the new cabinet was announced, retracted that demand but has met with officials across various sporting codes, including cricket and rugby, to reach common ground on their plans to transform. But sources have cautioned against seeing Amla’s likely appointment as solely based on transformation goals. “He is highly respected in the team so I don’t think there is any aspect of colour that comes into it,” one insider said. “And even if it is mentioned, Hashim has had to deal with this type of thing before. If he is appointed, it is above and beyond colour and he will know that.”Rushdie Magiet, a former convener of selectors, agreed and told ESPNcricinfo, he thinks Amla has the ability to “bring the team together” as they head through a transition phase.

Shanan Stewart retires from cricket

Shanan Stewart, who represented New Zealand in four ODIs, has called time on his career in top-flight cricket with the record of making the second-most appearances for Canterbury

ESPNcricinfo staff10-Apr-2014Shanan Stewart, who represented New Zealand in four ODIs in 2010, has called time on his career in top-flight cricket. The 31-year old hard-hitting batsman made his first-class debut in 2001 for Canterbury and had since played 244 matches for the side in all formats, second to former Test cricketer Chris Harris.”It was still a very tough call,” Stewart told . “I’ve made some really good mates in this sport and it was a pretty tough decision to retire. But I’ve got a young family now and other things on my plate and, really, at the end of the day I probably wasn’t having as much success as I wanted.”Stewart made 5693 runs in four-day cricket at 36.72, with seven centuries and 35 fifties. His farewell innings was a blistering and unbeaten 96 off 65 balls to sink Auckland in February. He struck 3521 List A runs including four centuries and 17 fifties and in the shortest format he had 679 runs, with five fifties and a strike rate of 124.35.Peter Fulton, the Canterbury captain, praised Stewart’s method that sustained a domestic career spanning over a decade. “He’s a bit of an old-school cricketer,” Fulton said. “He played the game hard, always gave 100 per cent and he had fun.”Stewart’s greatest highlight remains his 485 runs in seven matches during Canterbury’s successful Plunket Shield campaign in 2010-11, an achievement made all the more significant having come under difficult times.”Winning the four-day championship after the earthquake [2010-11 season] when we were all down and out a bit, that was special,” he said. “The way Fults (Fulton) and Bobby [assistant coach Bob Carter] pulled us through, that was brilliant and winning that title really was the highlight for me. I owe a lot to Bobby, he was the coach who really seemed to get the most out of me.”A first-class highest of 227 proved the stepping stone into the national side but the promotion did not last too long after he could muster only 26 runs in four ODIs in 2010. He had skirted around the edges of a T20I debut having made the 30-man preliminary squad for that year’s World T20, but missed out.”Obviously I would have loved more success with New Zealand but I have no regrets,” he said.

The Indian team management has denied a report that they had pulled up the host broadcaster during the Centurion ODI for showing a clip of Virat Kohli getting injured during the first ODI with a caption that said, “Kohli – softened up”. A report in on Thursday said, “SuperSport’s director was summoned to the Indian changing room during the innings interval and an explanation [was] demanded. His argument for ‘editorial relevance’ was countered with angry accusations of ‘inappropriate behaviour’, disrespect, and a suggestion that he ‘sticks to the cricket’ in future.”An Indian team official said he was not aware of what had happened. An official communication 10 minutes later said, “Once rain stopped play we did meet the producer of SuperSport but it was for discussing something else and not about the clip shown of Virat.”A SuperSport representative confirmed that “discussions” had taken place without going into details. A spokesperson said, “SuperSport is aware that discussions took place between a member of its production staff and members of the Indian touring party at SuperSport Park on 11 December. SuperSport will continue to produce the matches during the current tour to world-class specifications and with regard to editorial context.”During the Wanderers ODI, Kohli was hit in the rib area by a Morne Morkel short ball. While he did not flinch or show pain on the field, he later applied an ice pack on the bruise. The clip being referred to in this incident showed the whole sequence: first his getting hit, then him with an ice pack, and then practising a pull. One of the TV commentators said the clip was shown on the request of the commentary team on air at the time because they were discussing facing fast bowling and coming back from getting hit.Members of the SuperSport commentary team said they had not been informed of any developments and were not given any instructions.

Botham, Jayawardene open Murali Cup

Ian Botham and Mahela Jayawardene opened the 2013 Murali Cup in Kilinochchi on Friday, as the five-day tournament began in five venues across Sri Lanka’s northern province

Andrew Fidel Fernando01-Nov-2013Ian Botham and Mahela Jayawardene opened the 2013 Murali Cup in Kilinochchi on Friday, as the five-day tournament began in five venues across Sri Lanka’s northern province. The Murali Cup aims to promote unity and reconciliation as well as the development of cricket, in the post-war regions of the country, by bringing men’s and women’s teams from the south to play sides from the north and east.Jayawardene, who had been one of the first public figures to visit the north after the war ended in 2009, said his belief that cricket could facilitate role in social reconciliation in Sri Lanka had only been heightened by his experience of the inaugural Murali Cup, last year.”It’s all about these kids getting together, and having fun. They have open minds, and you can see the love that the people in the north have for the game, and we should be there to foster that,” Jayawardene said.”Last year, the team from St. Peters stayed with the boys from Kilinochchi, instead of staying in the separate accommodation that they had been assigned. They made friendships and exchanged Facebook and numbers, and when St. Peters got into the final against Jaffna, the boys from Kilinochchi got into a bus and went to watch that game, specially. That’s the kind of thing that needs to happen.”Botham also began his charity walk through Sri Lanka after inaugurating the tournament, the first leg of which finished in Mankulam, 29 kilometres to the south of Kilinochchi. Sourav Ganguly, Steve Waugh and Allan Border are scheduled to join Botham on later legs.”It’s a terrific tournament – one which shows cricket’s capacity to bring people together, and be a common point of interest,” Botham said. “It fits in really well with the idea behind the walk, which is to use sport to improve people’s lives.”

Kumar Sangakkara will visit the tournament venues on Saturday and Sunday, before Muttiah Muralitharan arrives for the finals on Tuesday. Twelve Under-19 teams and eight women’s teams will compete in 34 Twenty20 matches.
