Arsenal: Ferran Torres could thrive with the Gunners

Arsenal will have a huge summer ahead of them. Unai Emery is going to have his work cut out for him.

The Gunners’ collapse against Chelsea in the Europa League was one that was extremely difficult for the faithful to watch, although it is something they have seen far too often as time has gone by.

A lack of quality in certain areas of the pitch has cost Arsenal dearly at times throughout the season and Emery is going to have to make addressing those problems a priority this summer if they are to improve and restore some faith with the fans that pay good money to watch them every week.

Arguably, the north London outfit lack attacking threat out on the flanks, however, one of their latest targets could help make a difference moving forward if they were to sign him.

According to a report by The Daily Mail, Arsenal are thought to be interested in signing Valencia’s Ferran Torres and could be prepared to enter a battle with Leicester City for his signature.

The 19-year-old has shown glimpses of quality in his first full season for Los Che and it is believed he could be available for as little as £25million – provided a sell-on clause is included within any possible deal.

And, that could be a relatively small price for the Gunners to pay of a player of his quality.

Torres can play on either flank and has an eye for a through ball that he can provide his attacking team-mates with; a skill that would be beneficial for the frontline at the Emirates Stadium.

Obviously still a young talent, the teenager is far from the finished article, however, he has shown the amount of potential he has to offer in his matches with Valencia. If given the opportunity to play under Emery, there would be every chance of him developing further and potentially thriving in north London.

Arsenal fans, do you think Torres could thrive at the club? Do you think he would be a good addition? Let us know what your thoughts are by sharing them below!

Jansson’s latest comments suggest his future lies away from Leeds

[ad_pod ]

Pontus Jansson has recently gone on record to state that playing in the Premier League is his dream.

The Swede reiterated the fact that he is committed to the club unless they want to sell him, but his comments seem to state otherwise.

“I’ve always said that taking the step up to the Premier League is my dream and I want to do it with Leeds,” Jansson told Aftonbladet.

“It is up to Leeds if there is an interest in negotiating [my exit].

“Until then I am 110 per cent Leeds.

“I will be there until the day they don’t want me.”

Although he says that he is committed to the Whites, to say that he would happily go to the Premier League if Leeds received an offer seems to indicate otherwise.

Leeds can’t afford to have any players who aren’t 100 per cent committed to the cause next season, and if their transfer policy of selling players before bringing in new signings continues then Jansson must be a prime candidate to leave.

This is a view that has been shared by Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Phil Hay who commented on Jansson’s future on the latest edition of the Square Ball Podcast.

“I wonder about Jansson. Is this the window where he goes and moves on? If that’s an option and somebody has to be sold, and the club could be happy because he’s done his stint here,” he said.

“I do think he’s a good centre-back and a quality centre-back, but if somebody’s got to be sold, they have to make a choice haven’t they.

“If Jansson wants to stay, then I’d be tempted to keep him, but if there’s any wavering and he wants to go then perhaps that’s the one.”

The 28-year-old’s latest comments have confirmed Hay’s worries. There seems to be at least an element of wavering in Jansson, and as Leeds enter potentially their most crucial season since they were relegated in 2004, the last thing they want is to have a player whose mind is elsewhere.

We could do better with a copy of FM: Leeds fans slate Orta’s signings

[ad_pod ]

Leeds United fans on Twitter have been slating Victor Orta after a full list of the signings he has made was published by the Yorkshire Evening Post.

The Director of Football has been a polarising figure at Elland Road since his arrival, but many fans were united in saying that his transfer record hasn’t been good enough.

It’s hard to defend the Spaniard. His track record of signings has been poor as this list includes the likes of Felix Wiedwald, Caleb Ekuban, Izzy Brown and Vurnon Anita.

Although Orta has uncovered some gems such as Pontus Jansson and Mateusz Klich, overall his eye for talent just hasn’t proven to be up to scratch.

The Yorkshire club’s performances on the pitch this season have protected the man in charge of transfers from a lot of criticism, but now that the Whites have been resigned to another season in the Championship, and supporters have turned on Andrea Radrizzani’s right-hand man.

Here’s what the Elland Road faithful have been saying on Twitter…

Ossie Ardiles posts motivational tweet as Spurs fans countdown to kick-off vs Ajax

[ad_pod ]Tottenham Hotspur welcome Ajax to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this evening for a clash which nobody envisaged when the Champions League got underway. Both sides are carrying something of an underdog label ahead of the semi-final, but the calibre of the opposition they have collectively overcome to reach this stage suggests either side could lift the most coveted of footballing trophies in Madrid next month.Spurs have plenty of injury concerns ahead of the game and, with Son Heung-min also suspended, there is plenty of reason for fans to be feeling apprehensive.Ahead of the game, a true legend of the north London club, Ossie Ardiles, has taken to Twitter to publicly back Mauricio Pochettino.

This is the Argentine’s biggest test of his career so far.

Pochettino will know better than anyone that this could be Tottenham’s best chance to reach the final of the Champions League for years to come, even if the Eredivisie league leaders have already toppled two giants on their way to this stage.

But Ardiles’ tweet underlines the feeling around the club: they are in the best possible hands and the 47-year-old possesses the nous to ensure Spurs set up a final date with Liverpool or Barcelona.

Ardiles was always the man for the big occasion during his time with the Lilywhites, as Man City know all too well, and he will be hoping his compatriot can also triumph on the big stage tonight.

2 things we learnt about Arsenal in disappointing loss at Everton

Arsenal crashed to defeat at Goodison Park today to put their Champions League hopes under threat once again.

A goal from Phil Jagielka proved enough for the Toffees to continue their own good form and put them in contention for a place in Europe come the end of the campaign.

For Arsenal though, it was more of the same and manager Unai Emery will have been disappointed to see his side lose out so easily in a game his players really should have been desperate to win in.

We at the Tavern feel like we’ve seen this all too often from Arsenal over the years, and they’ll need to ensure they can get back in form if they are indeed to make it into the top four come the end of the season.

With this game now done and dusted, Emery and his staff will be keen to move forward, but we here at the Tavern were keen to have a look back at the game that little bit closer.

So, with that, here’s TWO things we learnt from the Gunners’ 1-0 loss at Everton today…

Same old problems exist

In what has become something almost synonymous with the club in recent times, the Gunners once again showed a soft underbelly in this loss.

This is something which Emery simply has to address in the summer, and if he can’t get the right players in, then we might not see Arsenal back at the top for some time.

Investment is needed in the squad

It goes without saying and it’s been highlighted before, but the Gunners squad needs some new additions if they are to challenge for honours once again.

Arsenal need solid players adding in defence and in midfield, and if the club can back Emery and help him bring the right players in, then there might be some hope for the club.

However, that needs to come this summer and quickly, and the club need to ensure they do indeed get the right players in during the coming months.

Arsenal: Sokratis’ suspension might have just cost Arsenal Champions League football

Just when the run-in couldn’t get any harder for Arsenal, they’ve now lost arguably their best defender this season.

Sokratis’ 25th-minute yellow card in Arsenal’s 1-0 loss to Everton was the Greek defender’s 10th yellow card of the season, meaning the former Borussia Dortmund man now misses the Gunners next two Premier League games, two matches Unai Emery absolutely has to win.

Watford away and Crystal Palace at home are winnable games for the Gunners, but without Sokratis’ defensive quality and organisation the task of picking up six points from six has just got a lot harder, and fans could turn on the Greek international, who is valued at £18 million (by Transfermarkt), if Arsenal don’t get maximum points in the next two games.

Arsenal’s weekend loss has brought fans and players back down to the reality that qualification for the Champions League won’t be a walk in the park, and Sokratis’ suspension for the next two games will only make things more difficult for a side that have yet to keep a clean sheet on the road this season.

The problem doesn’t also stop at Sokratis being unavailable for two games, though. With Laurent Koscielny unavailable since mid-March and Rob Holding out until next season, meaning Emery might have to turn to Carl Jenkinson or Stephan Lichtsteiner for central defensive cover in the Greek’s absence.

Young defender Konstantinos Mavropanos will also likely miss out on first-team opportunities too with the 21-year-old yet to return to full fitness after a lengthy spell out on the side with injury.

Sokratis has been one of the best signings Emery brought in this summer, but his recklessness on the pitch might have cost him and the team an opportunity to qualify for the Champions League for the first time in three years, and if Arsenal fall to Watford and Palace, you can bet fans will point to the absence of the Greek defender for those missed opportunities.

Arsenal fans, who should fill in for Sokratis during his suspension? Let us know!

Why Arsenal should look elsewhere from Getafe’s Djene Dakonam in the summer

[ad_pod ]

It has been reported by Spanish football media outlet AS that Arsenal manager Unai Emery was in his native Spain over the weekend, scouting Getafe centre-back and Togolese international Djené Dakonam in a 0-0 draw with Valencia.

What’s the word, then?

Per the aforementioned report, despite their manager’s more recent scouting mission, the Gunners have had their eye on the 27-year-old for some time, since last summer in fact.

Then, they failed to meet the physical defender’s release clause of €35 million, but the rumours continue to swirl and after all, Emery is still watching Djene very closely indeed.

At the Coliseum Alfonso Perez the versatile 5ft 10in star has thrived, quickly becoming a first-team regular and to this date has made 66 appearances, with one goal to his name.

In 2018/2019, the Tongolese has been a mainstay of the Deep Blues’ backline as they’ve shocked Spain’s top division by sitting in fourth place with matches running out, meaning he’s attracted continued interest from the Premier League giants.

Stay away Arsenal

The Gunners currently have five first-team centre-backs with a whole host of players that can and do fill in when they’re required to, more than enough.

The bulk of them are above the age of 25 and vastly experienced not just in the Premier League, but across Europe’s top five leagues.

Therefore, if they anyone does depart, they need to be properly replaced with defenders who have real experience in the top five leagues of this continent, something Djene just doesn’t possess.

The North London Derby of 2008 may never be matched for drama. Lewis from Norwich City Central explains why it’s his all time favourite derby in the video below…

Despite being 27, the powerful centre-back has only been a La Liga star for around a season-and-a-half and has no previous experience in one of Europe’s top five leagues.

Even if we do take his experience in the Spanish top flight into account, the league is still widely thought to be of a much lower quality to the English equivalent that he would have to get used to in north London.

For these reasons, while the versatility of the player who can also do a job in the right-back position will be appealing to Emery, Arsenal should stay away from a move for the Getafe man and look elsewhere if they’re wanting to bolster their central defence.
