Wolves injury news on Neto

Many Wolves fans have been left buzzing as some injury news emerged on Pedro Neto.

Speaking in his pre-game press conference ahead of their match away at Manchester City in the Premier League earlier this afternoon, Bruno Lage revealed (via The Express & Star) that the Portugal international is still on track to return to Molineux around the middle of next month, and that his last exam went well.

However, he does not know when Neto is going to start training with the squad again.

Nonetheless, the mere fact that the recovery is on track and he is still on course for his expected return date has delighted the Molineux faithful, given that he has not featured for them since April.

With five goals and six assists in the Premier League last season (Transfermarkt), the winger is clearly an important player to the team, and Lage will no doubt be excited to start working with him.

Flintoff begins recovery from surgery

The England allrounder Andrew Flintoff has undergone surgery to his injured right knee and is expected to be on crutches for a minimum of six weeks

Cricinfo staff25-Aug-2009The England allrounder Andrew Flintoff has undergone surgery to his injured right knee and is expected to be on crutches for a minimum of six weeks.Flintoff, who retired from Test cricket after England’s victorious Ashes campaign which culminated in a 197-run win over Australia at The Oval, underwent a routine arthroscopy and micro-fracture to two small areas in his right knee last night. The recovery period is expected to be lengthy. Prior to the operation, Flintoff identified England’s one-day series against Bangladesh next February as a realistic goal to recover from this latest surgery. And despite this latest setback, he remains determined to become the best one-day cricketer in the world.”The recovery will require him to be non weight-bearing for the first six to eight weeks post surgery,” the ECB said. “At the end of this six-to-eight-week period, the knee will be reviewed by his surgeon and the timescale for ongoing rehabilitation further determined.”Flintoff ended his Test career by helping England beat Australia in the fifth and final Test, clinching the series 2-1 and regaining the Ashes.

Rain threatens Sri Lanka A's unofficial Test

The fickle weather which has dogged Colombo for the past five days has extended to Asgiriya, Kandy, the venue of the first 4-day unofficial cricket test between Sri Lanka A and Pakistan A

The fickle weather which has dogged Colombo for the past five days has extended to Asgiriya, Kandy, the venue of the first four-day unofficial Test between Sri Lanka A and Pakistan A. Sri Lanka A were deprived of any practice on a rainy morning and had to do their light training under a steady drizzle. With the pitch under covers the whole day, and the outfield waterlogged, Sri Lanka A were taking no chances by finalising their XI: they have delayed their announced until the morning of the match. But they have gone as far as minimising their squad from 15 to 13, by omitting batsman Anushka Polonowita and fast bowler Priyanka Silva. With three seamers likely to play, Sri Lanka A will have to make a final choice between a batsman and a spinner. They will welcome back the hard-hitting left-handed opener Avishka Gunawardena, who was forced to miss the one-day triangular series after suffering from a severe bout of cramps during a practice match. His condition was so serious that he had to spend a few days in hospital. Without his big hitting experience, Sri Lanka’s batting was found wanting on several occasions during the tournament. Two other left-handers, Russel Arnold and Michael Vandort, will be keen to continue their good form in this series. Arnold, who was overlooked for the tour of New Zealand, was in outstanding form during the one-day tournament running up the highest aggregate of 316 runs at an average of 63, which included four fifties in five matches.Vandort broke on to the Test scene with much promise, but he didn’t even make the A squad after a heavy loss of form. He was handed a lucky break when Gunawardena was hospitalised, and he seized the opportunity with both hands, scoring an undefeated hundred backed up by two fifties to total 291 runs at an average of 73 in five matches in the one-day tournament. It was Arnold and Vandort who held their team’s batting together when the rest failed. The series will also prove testing for skipper Jehan Mubarak. Despite his undoubted talent, this tall left-hander had a horrific one-day tournament with the bat, averaging 4.40 from five innings.Pakistan practised in the afternoon and were more fortunate with the weather. They were able to use the ground to gain for some useful practice under a spot of welcome sunshine.Pakistan are buoyant after a thrilling final against Sri Lanka to clinch the tri-nation one-day limited overs tournament by one wicket on the Duckworth and Lewis rule on Tuesday. But their only two-day practice match, against a Sri Lanka Academy XI, was affected by bad weather at Moratuwa. They dismissed the Academy XI for 159 and replied with 101-4 before the match ended in a draw. The Asgiriya ground authorities were keeping their fingers crossed that it wouldn’t rain later last night, which may prevent a prompt start at 10.30 a.m.The series will comprise two Tests, with the second one due to commence at Rangiri Dambulla on April 10.Sri Lanka A (from) Jehan Mubarak (capt), Avishka Gunawardene, Ian Daniel, Michael Vandort, Russel Arnold, Malintha Gajanayake, Prasanna Jayawardene, Gayan Wijekoon, Malinga Bandara, Dilhara Fernando, Nandika Ranjith, Suraj Mohamed, Sajeewa Weerakoon.Pakistan A (from) Misbah-ul-Haq (capt), Wajahatullah Wasti, Faisal Athar, Bazid Khan, Faisal Iqbal, Hasan Raza, Yasir Arafat, Zulqarnain Haider, Tahir Khan, Imran Thahir, Abdul Rauf, Mohammad Asif, Riaz Afridi, Aamir Bashir, Asher Zaidi.

Robert Key will lead a strong England Lions side in the tour match against the West Indians at Derby from April 28. Ian Bell, fighting for an England recall, is included while Sajid Mahmood also gets the chance to push his claims for a spot in the pace pack.Key, after leading the Lions in New Zealand and the MCC against Durham at the start of the season, has another opportunity to show his leadership credentials ahead of the announcement of the captain for the ICC World Twenty20 squad.Michael Vaughan, who yesterday told Cricinfo he was desperate for another chance at international level, hasn’t been included, but will have a Championship game the same week. However, by the time the Lions match begins the Test squad will already have been announced.Samit Patel is edging his way back into the selectors’ good books after being omitted from the one-day squad in the West Indies for being unfit. He has started the season in promising style with 95 in his first Championship innings against Worcestershire before being run out.”This is a really exciting summer for cricket in England and Wales and the Lions matches are excellent opportunities for players to push for England places,” Geoff Miller, the national selector, said. “The Lions squads feature players who display qualities that are capable of winning matches for England, so these games are very important.”Rob Key captained outstandingly well in New Zealand and then took the reins in similar fashion for the MCC in the champion county match, so he will continue to lead for the match against West Indies.”Tim Ambrose, who played the Barbados Test on the recent West Indies tour, takes the wicketkeeper’s position ahead of James Foster and Adil Rashid is the spinner.Squad Robert Key (capt), Stephen Moore, Ian Bell, Samit Patel, Jonathan Trott, Luke Wright, Tim Ambrose (wk), Adil Rashid, Liam Plunkett, Sajid Mahmood, Chris Woakes

FAVORITISMO NO DÉRBI
“Não sabia disso (risos). Me trouxe mais responsabilidade ainda.

Draining defeats rankle Jayawardene

Mahela Jayawardene has described Tuesday’s 147-run defeat as Sri Lanka’s worst in recent times

Mahela Jayawardene, the Sri Lankan captain, has described Tuesday’s 147-run defeat as among Sri Lanka’s worst in recent times and called on his team to show character in the next two matches against India. India have an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series, only their second bilateral series win in Sri Lanka.”I’ve spoken to the guys. What has happened has happened and we just need to learn from it,” Jayawardene said after the third one-dayer. “It has happened twice with India at home. There were close games in the last series as well as in this series (before Tuesday’s game) where we couldn’t turn it around.”It is disappointing because when you turn those corners, that’s when the momentum gets built up and it’s from there you lift yourself to win a series. We’ve been able to do that with other teams but not with India. That’s probably a mental thing or how we react to the pressure they put on us. It is something we need to work on.”We had our opportunities but I don’t think we capitalised on them. We didn’t bowl that well but at the same time I think India batted really well and took the game away from us. Knowing that they were 2-0 up they knew they had to push it. They took chances and played shots. They batted us out of the game after the 25th over. Our fielding was a disappointment as we usually field very well.”Jayawardene said his team wasn’t used to being upstaged like this in home conditions.”We had a few games in Australia where we were outplayed, but at home we haven’t been outplayed like this for quite some time,” Jayawardene said. “We never reacted properly to the situations. When they were going for runs, our bowlers were not disciplined enough to try and control them. But you have to give some credit to India as well for the way they batted. They did hit some good balls from our guys and created a lot of pressure.”This is Sri Lanka’s third successive bilateral one-day series defeat at home following 3-2 losses to England in 2007 and India in 2008.”It’s very difficult to say why it’s happened. There have been close games but we haven’t been able to finish them off. In the last two series for the majority of the games I would put [our inconsistency] down to our batting,” he said. “On this occasion the batting has been okay but there is room for improvement. We have to be more consistent and try and finish games off. This series at crucial times we didn’t handle things properly whether it was with the bat or ball or on the field we were not upto our standards.”Jayawardene discounted the theory that India were a far superior all-round side to Sri Lanka.”I don’t think India are far superior but they are playing really good, consistent cricket with bat and ball. They’ve got bowlers who are in form and at the same time 4-5 of their batters are in form as well and are actually taking control of things.”Sri Lanka are likely to make a few changes for tomorrow’s game but not too many because, according to Jayawardene, they want to be consistent and win matches by playing the strongest possible side.

Liverpool keen on Lewandowski

Liverpool have emerged as one of the clubs keen on Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski.

The Lowdown: One of the greatest goalscorers

The Munich striker’s goal record is near perfect, with 304 goals in 335 appearances for the German champions since his move from Borussia Dortmund.

After notching in 41 goals in 29 Bundesliga outings last season, Lewandowski has continued his impressive goalscoring form with six goals in four league games, as well as two goals in their opening Champions League game.

Lazio’s own goal machine, Ciro Immobile, hailed the Poland star as the best number nine in the world earlier this year.

With his contract at Munich expiring in 2023, news has broken out that Lewandowski could make a move to embark on one final challenge in the Premier League.

The Latest: One of many suitors

According to Fichajes, Liverpool are one of the Premier League clubs keen on signing the goal machine.

The signing of Lewandowski is seen to be the missing piece for Jurgen Klopp’s side to compete with Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea for the Premier League title.

The striker has won 25 trophies in his career- with most of them coming whilst at Munich.

The report states that the Reds want to take advantage of the situation the Poland international finds himself in, with reports in Germany claiming he has told the Munich board he wants to leave in seek of new challenges.

The Verdict: Klopp favourite

Lewandowski’s record in front of goal would be appealing to any club in the footballing world, but Klopp has already worked with him whilst at Dortmund, where he scored 102 goals in 186 appearances – the boss has even admitted Lewandowski is the best player he’s ever coached.

With how the Reds play, with Roberto Firmino or Diogo Jota in the middle of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, having an out-and-out goalscorer like Lewandoski in the box would potentially place Liverpool on a different level.

Described as ‘next level’ by teammate Thomas Muller and ‘special’ by Julian Nagelsmann, the thought of Klopp’s favourite ever student turning out at Anfield is mouth-watering.

In other news, Liverpool fans have called for the club to sign Premier League midfielder amid contract talks stall. Find out more here.
