Roberts drops brutal Rose verdict after Spurs exit - exclusive

Tottenham Hotspur legend Graham Roberts believes that Danny Rose was to blame for his own treatment at the club.

Rose will leave Spurs at the end of the month, when his contract formally expires in north London.

It is a fall from grace for the ex-England international, who has been with Spurs since 2007, spending 14 years at the club.

He made a total of 214 appearances for the club, developing into one of the best left-backs in world football at his peak, when Kyle Walker was on the other flank.

Roberts believes that Rose burned his own bridges by kicking up a fuss when Walker left for Manchester City, and asking for a pay rise that was denied.

The 30-year-old, who has won 29 caps for England, fell out of favour under the management of Jose Mourinho and did not play a single minute of Premier League football in the 2020/21 season.

Roberts, though, has little sympathy for the left-back, who will soon begin his search for a new club.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, he said: “He caused his own problems. I’ve always said the badge is bigger than any name. I was saying that about Harry Kane.

“If he does leave, the club will always be there. No name is bigger than the club and I think with Danny, he had the hump when Kyle Walker left and he went in and asked for a pay rise, and they said no and then he fell out with everybody.”

Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa set to sign new contract

Leeds United could be set for a huge boost as some major news emerges from Thorp Arch about Marcelo Bielsa’s future at the club.

What’s the story?

The Argentine has been an inspirational figure at Elland Road, guiding the Whites out of the Championship and steering them to an impressive first season back in the Premier League.

Now, Football Insider claim that the club “will start work this week on finalising new contracts for Marcelo Bielsa and his coaching assistants”, and that “United chiefs have held preliminary talks with Bielsa’s representatives over a new one-year agreement that will see him extend his spell to a fourth season”.

The report adds that a Leeds source has revealed the club are “confident” Bielsa will put pen to paper on a new deal now that the season is over.

Fans will be buzzing

When reports emerged back in April that Bielsa was close to signing a new deal, Leeds fans took to Twitter to voice their delight at seeing the Argentine commit his future to the club.

And while it seems to have taken a while, the fresh news that Bielsa is close to finalising that new contract will undoubtedly have fans of the Yorkshire club absolutely buzzing, especially given the incredible moments that he has given them as manager.

And, speaking exclusively to FFC, Lawrie Sanchez insisted he could always see Bielsa staying, saying: “Where does he go? He isn’t going to another Premier League club. I think he’s a bit like Roy Hodgson. He wants to work, doesn’t he?  He’s working now in the biggest league in his life, and as much as he comes across as not that interested in it, when people tap you on the shoulder back home and say, ‘I saw you on the TV the other week, your team did brilliant,’ it’s a massive boost to you.

“I think he will stay. They call him a maverick; he dances to his own tune, doesn’t he?  So, if he did leave you would say ‘that’s Bielsa’. But if he were to stay involved in football and having come all the way to Leeds and having seen how well the team has done this year, and obviously they will be backed next year, so I can see him staying.”

News of Bielsa’s impending new contract is a major boost for Leeds just after the Premier League season has finished.

Everton fans blast Doucoure vs Wolves

Many Everton fans have been left to blast the display of Abdoulaye Doucoure despite their win against Wolves in the Premier League on Wednesday evening.

The Merseyside club managed to take all three points away from Goodison Park in front of a few thousand of their supporters as Richarlison headed in from a corner by Gylfi Sigurdsson to keep their European qualification hopes alive.

However, while there were some very good performances for Carlo Ancelotti’s team, Doucoure’s flattered to deceive.

The former Watford man lost out on two of his duels and failed to record a single blocked shot or key pass, as well as losing possession of the ball on no fewer than on 13 different occasions in the game, the third-most out of any of his teammates to have set foot on the pitch (Sofascore).

These Toffees blasted his performance on Twitter, with one Blues supporter even going as far as to claim that he is ‘dreadful’:

Last-ball boundary secures tense win for Gloucestershire

Gloucestershire successfully began their defence of the Benson & Hedges Cup with a last-ball boundary from Chris Taylor snatching victory in a match where the scores finished level

John Sheldon01-May-2001Gloucestershire successfully began their defence of the Benson & Hedges Cup with a last-ball boundary from Chris Taylor snatching victory in a match where the scores finished level. The one-day masters, aiming for a fifth consecutive Lord’s final in two competitions, won their first group match by matching Warwickshire’s 213 for 9 and squeezed home by virtue of losing three fewer wickets.Though Taylor’s cover drive off Vasbert Drakes settled the issue, the previous ball proved to be the home side’s undoing. When Taylor was sent back, Drakes threw down the non-striker’s wicket and the ball ran away to give Reggie Williams the chance to scamper a single.Ian Harvey won the gold award for his competition-best 5 for 32 as Warwickshire lurched between extremes after being put in to bat. Harvey and Jon Lewis put them in trouble at 39 for four, but Dominic Ostler (77) and skipper Michael Powell (55) responded with a stand of 136 – a new fifth-wicket record for the county in the B & H Cup.Harvey then returned to take three more wickets and ease the task for his batsmen. Kim Barnett and Rob Cunliffe laid a good base, but Mo Sheikh almost turned the game with a stunning caught-and-bowled to remove Barnett.Cunliffe advanced to 75 before Warwickshire moved back into the ascendancy with wickets in successive balls from Dougie Brown and another for Mel Betts to remove Matt Windows for 42.Mark Alleyne brought the target down to ten from the last over but was bowled by a near-full toss from Drakes before Williams and Taylor tied the match.

Derby handed blow over Waghorn’s future

Wayne Rooney has been dealt a blow to his hopes of keeping Martyn Waghorn at Derby County this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Football Insider, who claimed that a recruitment source has revealed that Cardiff City are monitoring the situation of the £1.8m-rated centre-forward ahead of a potential summer swoop.

The report added that Derby are desperate for the 31-year-old to sign a new deal at the club in the coming weeks, with his contract at Pride Park set to expire at the end of June.

Rooney will be gutted

While Waghorn did not have the best of seasons by anybody’s standards in 2020/21, the striker undeniably proved his worth to Rooney’s side in the final round of Championship fixtures.

With Derby needing to match Rotherham United’s result against Cardiff City in their own fixture against Sheffield Wednesday to survive relegation, the £7,900-per-week forward proved the catalyst in getting the Rams over the line at Pride Park, scoring two goals and providing one assist to secure a 3-3 draw with the Owls and subsequently keeping his side in the second tier at their opponents’ expense.

Over the rest of the season, Waghorn only managed a further three goals and three assists, as well as averaging a rather disappointing SofaScore match rating of 6.67 – ranking him as Derby’s joint 17th-best performer in the Championship.

However, if the reports are to be believed, Rooney is clearly keen to keep the 31-year-old on the club’s books this summer, and as such, the news concerning Mick McCarthy’s interest in his former Ipswich Town player is likely to come as a huge blow for the 35-year-old Derby boss.

With the Bluebirds finishing in eighth place in the Championship, McCarthy will undoubtedly be hoping to mount a push for a play-off spot next season, something which could be quite appealing to Waghorn as the potential of playing Premier League football with the Welsh club appears to be much greater than if he were to stay at Derby this summer.

Indeed, with time running out on his contract at Pride Park and no sign as yet that he will be putting pen to paper on a new deal, things do not look too promising regarding Rooney’s chances of holding onto the striker – whom Kenny Miller dubbed a “fantastic” player – this summer.

Bielsa urged not to start Cooper vs Spurs

Former Leeds player Noel Whelan has told Liam Cooper to ‘wait his turn’ as he becomes available again following suspension.

The Lowdown: Cooper returns

Cooper has been banned for Leeds’ last three games after picking up a controversial red card for a challenge on Manchester City’s Gabriel Jesus.

Marcelo Bielsa has elected to go with Pascal Strujik and Diego Llorente in Cooper’s absence – Llorente was on target with a late equaliser in the 1-1 draw against Liverpool.

And he and Strujik then kept a clean sheet when Manchester United, the second-highest scorers in the division, visited Elland Road.

Llorente in particular played so well in April that he was named in WhoScored’s team of the month.

And Cooper himself labelled Strujik ‘different class’. But Leeds’ momentum stalled on the South Coast last week as they went down 2-0 against Brighton.

The Latest: Wait your turn, says Whelan

Bielsa must now decide whether to draft club captain Cooper back into the line-up as Leeds host European hopefuls Spurs on Saturday lunchtime.

Whelan, though, believes he should stick with the replacement partnership for the time being.

“I think Strujik is one of the players that did okay,” he told Football Insider.

“The thing about Strujik and Llorente is that they’re growing together.

“They need better help in front of them and they didn’t have that the other day.

“We were absolutely shocking all over the field.

“I mean it was embarrassing how badly we actually played at the weekend.

“We need a better performance but I’m not sure whether Liam Cooper should come back into the side.

“I think he needs to wait his turn.”

The Verdict

Leeds’ defence is in for one of the most daunting tests in the Premier League on Saturday, going up against Harry Kane, Son-Heung min and Gareth Bale.

Bielsa has hailed Cooper, valued at £6.3million by Transfermarkt, as a ‘generous’ player who prioritises the needs of his team-mates and claimed ‘you can’t find a better professional than him’.

That indicates that he truly values his presence in games of this magnitude. Over the course of the season, only injury has kept him out of clashes with ‘big six’ opposition.

He will probably recalled in place of Strujik.

Howe to Celtic: Harkin unlikely to follow him

Celtic’s search for a new manager has turned into somewhat of a circus. Rumours are flying all over the shop but we could be about to finally find out who is hired the Bhoys’ new head coach.

Eddie Howe has emerged as the favourite in recent days as the Hoops have moved away from Roy Keane.

What’s the word?

Howe is reportedly in advanced talks with the Celtic hierarchy to become their new manager. He has held discussions with majority shareholder Dermot Desmond and performed due diligence on behind-the-scenes matters.

According to the Daily Mail, he is already working on his backroom team. However, in a surprising turn of events, he wants to bring his own technical director with him in Richard Hughes.

Nick Hammond left his role as Head of Football Operations this week, a position which was reportedly being changed to a Director of Football. That role was set to be filled by Manchester City’s Fergal Harkin.

A deal was 90% done but news that Howe wants to bring Hughes with him instead puts a cloud of doubt over Harkin’s future.

Sportsmail reported that Howe is happy to stick with John Kennedy and Gavin Strachan, but wants Hughes to oversee a restructuring of the football operations. It is also claimed that former Celtic man Mark Burchill – now a scout at Bournemouth – is also in line for a job.

Bad news for Celtic

Hughes is currently technical director at Bournemouth but news that Celtic could now move away from Harkin shouldn’t be welcomed by supporters.

The latter has developed a reputation as a transfer guru during his time with Manchester City and has been in charge of their loan system.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-celtic-manager-and-transfer-news-roy-keane-nicky-butt-jesse-marsch-scott-brown” title=”Latest Celtic manager and transfer news!”]

That has allowed Harkin to help the development of young players, streamlining the transition from youth team to senior football.

He has worked with the likes of ex-Hoops Patrick Roberts and Olivier Ntcham, while he played a large role in the progress of City first teamer Oleksandr Zinchenko.

For a club like Celtic who have neglected some of their younger players this season, this would have been a great appointment.

Instead, they’re looking at a director who has arguably spent poorly on the south coast of England. Although he built a squad which ultimately got promoted to the Premier League, some of his signings after Bournemouth came up were abject.

He spent £19m on Dominic Solanke, a player who has scored just 15 times in 81 outings for the Cherries. Hughes also played a role in bringing Jordon Ibe to Bournemouth in a deal worth £15m. The 25-year-old was released last summer after netting only five goals in 92 matches.

Considering some of the deals Hammond concluded at Parkhead – namely Albian Ajeti and Vasilis Barkas – this wouldn’t necessarily be an upgrade.
