Adam Armstrong: Newcastle to miss out on January deal for Blackburn Rovers striker

Mike Ashley’s reluctance to sanction any permanent transfers this January will see Newcastle United miss out on forging a winter reunion with Blackburn Rovers striker Adam Armstrong.

What’s the word?

According to The Northern Echo, the Toon will focus their January plans on the loan market as Ashley is opposed to committing to any major outlays while he strives to resurrect a deal with Amanda Staveley’s Saudi Arabia-backed consortium to sell the club.

The Magpies will be active in the market looking to improve Steve Bruce’s side, but will only approach Manchester United over a deal for Phil Jones if the Old Trafford natives cover a per cent of his wages, alleged to be around £100,000-per-week, until the end of the season.

Ashley refusing to put his hand in his pocket could also see Bruce miss out on an idyllic winter reinforcement amid plans to sign a striker, as Blackburn CEO Steve Waggott has decreed that Armstrong will only leave Ewood Park this winter if they receive offers worth between £25m and £30million.

“If, say, for example, Leeds United phoned us up in late December, early January saying we have £25m-£30m for Adam Armstrong then I would say to the owners here’s an offer we need to consider,” Waggott told Lancs Live last month.

“But the key is, who is coming in for Adam Armstrong if you sell him? How are you going to use the £30m? Yes, you could use some towards operational losses, but how are you going to build out from losing a player of that magnitude?”

Newcastle sold Armstrong to Rovers in 2018 for a mere £1.75m, though would be due a per cent of any fee through a sell-on clause amid claims the striker would be a perfect option for Brighton and Hove Albion as Graham Potter looks to add more firepower at the Amex.

It has also been suggested the Toon have informed Rovers of their interest in re-signing Armstrong, who currently leads the Championship alongside Ivan Toney for goals scored with 14 each.

Unforgivable from Ashley

If Newcastle’s interest in re-signing Armstrong is true and Ashley will refuse to pay out for the striker amid hopes of resurrecting a sale, Toon fans will have another reason to never forgive the North East giant’s owner.

Armstrong, who Waggott has compared with Alan Shearer, is lighting the Championship on fire this season with his 14 goals in 16 games coming from a mammoth 82 shots, of which 39 have been on target, per WhoScored.

AFC Bournemouth’s Dominic Solanke is the next-best performing striker in the second-tier for shots taken so far this season with 53 in 17 games, while ranking second only to Armstrong for on-target efforts, as well, with 23 finding the mark.

Newcastle are starved of offensive options able to contribute anywhere near the same levels as Armstrong, with Callum Wilson leading the scoring charts with seven of the Magpies’ 12 Premier League goals yet only taking a team-high 18 shots.

Joelinton has struck the Toon’s second-most efforts (12) and second-most on-target (5), but only accounts for a single goal thus far – the same as Jacob Murphy and Jeff Hendrick who have taken six and seven shots apiece.

Bruce will struggle to find a striker available on loan in the January window able to offer a vast improvement on his current options and will rue the day Ashley said no to Newcastle reuniting with Armstrong, as they potentially watch him excel elsewhere in the Premier League.

AND in other news, Steve Bruce is in talks for Newcastle United to sign a £75k-p/w international who’s “entering into his prime”.

Davinson Sanchez must be on borrowed time after latest Spurs clanger

Many at Tottenham Hotspur will still be hurting from Sunday’s disappointing draw with local rivals West Ham United, especially as they had three points in the bag up until the final eight minutes of the match.

You can point fingers at multiple members of the squad.

Jose Mourinho was perhaps wrong to withdraw Tanguy Ndombele late in the second half whilst the selection of Serge Aurier over Matt Doherty will always raise question marks.

But perhaps the problem lies with Davinson Sanchez, who dropped yet another clanger in the heart of the Spurs defence.

The north London outfit had the second-worst defensive record of any top-seven side last season and are yet to keep a clean sheet in the Premier League this term.

Sanchez has been involved frequently in that time – featuring in 46 matches for the club.

Against the Irons, the 24-year-old lost possession ten times, won just three of eight duels, committed two fouls and netted an embarrassing own goal, via SofaScore.

This is hardly a surprise as for the season, he’s second for being dribbled past and among the worst for successful pressures, interceptions and blocks among the Spurs squad, as per FBref.

With a domestic deadline day move for Wales international Joe Rodon secured, Sanchez must surely be on borrowed time in N17 as he’s just not delivering consistently and could well be the root of all Mourinho’s problems.

The Colombian colossus is valued at a whopping €50m (£45.5m) by CIES Football Observatory, but it’s fair to suggest that Spurs are not getting their money’s worth.

Speaking to the Times, via the Evening Standard, former Celtic and Chelsea forward-turned-pundit Tony Cascarino lambasted the north Londoners’ defensive options, he said: “The centre-half partnership is a disaster zone.”

Mourinho should already know this too having targeted the former Ajax man during Manchester United’s Europa League triumph, which makes his persistent selection all that more baffling.

Cascarino added: “When Mourinho, as Manchester United manager, prepared to face Ajax in the final of the Europa League in 2017, he identified Davinson Sánchez as a weak link and yet he is now placing faith in that very same player.”

He was a weak link then, and he’s a weak link now. It could well be Rodon season way earlier than expected at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Mikel Arteta provides latest update on Kieran Tierney ahead of Arsenal’s clash against Manchester City

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has shared an update concerning defender Kieran Tierney.

This comes after Arteta was recently speaking to the media in his latest press conference ahead of the north London club’s upcoming Premier League clash against Manchester City at the weekend.

During the press conference, Arteta was asked what the latest update was surrounding Tierney after the full-back was told he would need to self-isolate for 14 days starting from October 8 after being in close contact with Southampton player Stuart Armstrong, who tested positive for the global virus on international duty for Scotland (per AFC).

In response, Arteta had this to say on the situation: “This is getting very complicated when we are sending players abroad and obviously you lose control. Some authorities have different regulations to the ones in the Premier League. We are still having some discussions with the authorities and hopefully, we will know more this afternoon.”

The Spaniard then went on to say that he hopes Tierney will be able to play a part in Arsenal’s match against the Manchester club at the weekend.

Arsenal signed Tierney back in the 2019 summer transfer window from Scottish club Celtic for a fee of £24.3 million. Since then, the defender has gone on to make 28 appearances for the Gunners across all competitions in which he has managed to grab himself a goal and provide four assists for his teammates.

The 23-year-old, who is currently valued at £28.8 million, has enjoyed a decent start to the 2020/21 campaign for Arsenal after earning himself a current season rating of 6.76/10 for his performances in the three league appearances he’s made for Arsenal so far (per WhoScored).

Given how well Tierney has done for Arsenal so far this season, it’s no surprise that Arteta is hopeful Tierney will be able to play against City.

A decisão ainda cabe recurso.

Tottenham Hotspur: Predicted XI to face Newcastle at St James’ Park

Tottenham Hotspur bounced back from a dull draw with Bournemouth by beating Arsenal 2-1 at home.

Toby Alderweireld headed a late winner to clinch the victory in a hotly-contested north London derby.

Spurs had struggled for form beforehand, after they slumped to a disappointing defeat to Sheffield United, edged past Everton, and took away only a point from the Vitality Stadium.

However, the Lilywhites seem to have turned things around, as they came from behind to climb above their arch rivals into eighth in the Premier League.

Jose Mourinho will know his side face an almost impossible task to reach the top four, as they are currently nine points behind fifth-placed Manchester United, with only three games remaining.

As it stands, a spot in the Europa League is still up for grabs, and he will be looking to make a statement when Spurs travel to Newcastle United on Wednesday night.

Transfer Tavern have put together a predicted starting lineup, which sees Mourinho mess around with the side that beat Arsenal, as Erik Lamela and Steven Bergwijn return.

It was obvious right from the start that Mourinho had set his team up completely differently when Spurs welcomed Arsenal to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

As Alasdair Gold pointed out, Moussa Sissoko was pushed out wide, while Lucas Moura started on the left.

Moura effectively played as a wing-back and the Portuguese worked out a way to neutralise Kieran Tierney and Hector Bellerin.

Dele Alli has missed the past three games after suffering a knee injury in training, and whether or not he will have recovered in time to meet the Magpies remains to be seen. Spurs also line up against Leicester City at the weekend and Mourinho may choose to rest him for the pivotal clash.

Working on the assumption that he will not be fit to face Newcastle, it is likely Spurs will stick to the 4-4-1-1 formation.

Eric Dier is in the middle of a four game ban, so Davinson Sanchez and Toby Alderweireld will renew their partnership in front of Hugo Lloris, while Ben Davies lines up alongside his teammates.

Serge Aurier’s brother Christopher was killed earlier this week and Mourinho has made it clear he will let him decide if he wants to play so soon after his brother’s murder.

As Kyle Walker-Peters is on loan at Southampton, Spurs do not have another designated right-back, and the head coach has been considering Gedson Fernandes, Oliver Skipp and Sissoko as possible alternatives.

Sissoko is the most experienced player out of the trio and he may get the nod on the right flank.

With a bigger game against the Foxes at the weekend, Mourinho may want to give Moura some time off. Both Steven Bergwijn and Erik Lamela could come into the side instead, with Lamela replacing Sissoko further up-field.

Giovani Lo Celso and Harry Winks have formed a promising partnership in the heart of the midfield and the duo worked hard in front of the two centre-backs. It is hard to imagine Mourinho will want to break the pair up, particularly as he is currently embroiled in a public spat with Tanguy Ndombele.

The club’s record signing has barely featured since the Premier League restart and stands to miss out once again when Tottenham take on the Toon, which doesn’t bode well for his future.

Meanwhile, Harry Kane was relieved to finally have a strike partner up front, and he will look to resume his healthy rivalry with Son Heung-min at the top of the pitch.

Tottenham Hotspur: Peter Crouch’s tweet has loads of Spurs fans talking

Peter Crouch has shared his reaction to his memorable goal against Manchester City, as Tuesday marked 10 years to the day since his iconic match-winner at Eastlands. Unsurprisingly, lots of Spurs fans have reacted to his five word tweet.

Replying to a post from @thespursweb, Crouch fondly remembered his famous header against the Sky Blues away, saying “10 years ! What a night.”

The former Spurs striker bundled home a goal with only eight minutes remaining on the clock as Harry Redknapp’s Lilywhites secured their first top four finish in the Premier League in the club’s history (BBC Sport).

Having graduated from the North London club’s academy, the 39-year-old went on to make 93 appearances for Tottenham across two separate spells, scoring 24 goals and creating 21 assists, before leaving his boyhood club for the last time for Stoke City for £10.7m in August 2011. The ex-England international also won 42 caps for his country, bagging 22 goals in total, until he finally hung up his boots last summer.

As expected, a whole number of the THFC faithful responded to Crouch’s message, with one fan dubbing him a “Tottenham legend forever.”

Revealed: The referees Tottenham will want to see more of in future

Tottenham fans feared the worst as Bruno Fernandes fell under an apparent challenge from Eric Dier to give United a last gasp chance to take the points on Friday night.

Luckily VAR intervened given the lack of contact that was made and spare the blushes of Jon Moss for his incorrect judgment call. The Sunderland born official has past form in giving penalties against the North Londoners. I mean, who can forget he once awarded Manchester City three penalties in one game against Spurs back in 2014?

The standard of referring in this country has for a long time been a constant cause for debate as the continued inconsistencies frustrate supporters far and wide. Whilst VAR isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, it certainly goes some way in amending the wrongs that seemingly refs make on a match by match basis.

Over the years there have been many fans that believe there are certain refs that favour clubs over others, albeit it has previously been impossible to prove; however, the good people at TOFFS have compiled some top-line research that analyses the data from officials and gives football fans a definitive overview of which refs have it in for their clubs.

Unsurprising for Tottenham fans, the aforementioned Jon Moss’ record for them in matches doesn’t sit favourably. It isn’t as bad as Lee Probert, though…

Everton fans hoping Mikel Arteta succeeds Marco Silva

Marco Silva may technically still be in the hot seat at Goodison Park but time appears to be wearing thin.

The pressure has ramped up on the Portuguese coach after a 2-0 defeat against Norwich last weekend and various replacements have already been sounded out.

David Moyes and Eddie Howe are two potential successors, according to Sky Sports. However, Football Insider have claimed that Mikel Arteta is a top contender to take over at Everton. The Mirror have further supplemented those suggestions by saying he is indeed a target.

The 37-year-old has no prior experience of managing a side but he has been learning from one of the best in Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.

Since hanging up his boots, the Spaniard has been the former Barcelona manager’s assistant at the Etihad.

Speculation surrounding a potential swoop for Arteta has been greeted positively by supporters who are keen to see him return to Merseyside.

One fan went as far as saying he’s someone that every Evertonian would want while another made reference to his work under Guardiola.

Other individuals hoped that Arteta would arrive with Tim Cahill as his assistant.

Here’s the best of the reaction from Twitter.

In other news, here’s how Everton fans responded to another managerial target being lined up…
