Better than Nmecha: Leeds submit £29m bid to sign dream Muniz alternative

Leeds United’s summer transfer business is now in full swing.

Lukas Nmecha is their first official surprise capture, with the news coming out of the blue that the former Manchester City striker will link up with Daniel Farke’s men after his Wolfsburg contract expired.

The newly promoted Whites don’t look to be content with just Nmecha joining the building to improve their attacking potency, however, with Leeds chasing down the services of Fulham forward Rodrigo Muniz as well.

Leeds enter advanced talks for £29m striker

It remains to be seen whether the club’s pursuit of Muniz goes on to be a success story – considering Fulham have already turned down a whopping £32m approach.

However, Leeds are now reportedly setting their sights elsewhere in attempting to further bolster their centre-forward options.

As per a new report from Sky Italia – which has been relayed by Sport Witness – Leeds have now submitted a significant bid in the £29m range for the services of US Lecce star Nikola Krstovic.

The report states that Krstovic may need some convincing to relocate to England, with the Serie A hotshot perhaps waiting it out, instead of jumping at the Whites’ advances, for a move to come his way up the Italian top division.

Montenegro international Nikola Krstovic.

At this stage, however, no Serie A outfit has expressed an interest in the Montenegro international, with Leeds perhaps in the driver’s seat now over a deal if their bid is to be believed.

How Krstovic compares to Nmecha & Muniz

Amazingly, despite just landing Nmecha, Leeds could win an instant upgrade on the German by the 25-year-old’s arrival through the door.

Moreover, if the Cottagers aren’t willing to budge on Muniz, Krstovic might be deemed as a dream alternative to the pricey Brazilian, with the Lecce number 9 a constant source of entertainment in Serie A last season.

Between them last campaign in league action, Nmecha and Muniz powered home a combined 11 goals, with the in-demand Fulham man doing a lot of the heavy lifting with a hefty eight coming from him alone.

Krstovic would manage that amount just on his own when leading the line for Lecce in Serie A, whilst also managing to find himself on the scoresheet in Coppa Italia action for his relegation-threatened outfit.

Of course, the Lecce attacker did start a lot more games for his Italian employers last season in the league, but when it comes to looking at all their respective statistics side-by-side, only one individual looks ready to lead the line for Leeds week in week out, and that’s Krstovic.

The 25-year-old immediately sticks out with more goals and assists next to his name, but when you delve even deeper, he also shines brighter when winning more duels on average and also creating more big chances as a valued teammate.

Nikola Krstovic

Additionally, the Serie A gem wouldn’t feel too fazed by the prospect of being a marksman that Leeds have to rely on to push to safety, with a remarkable 11 of Lecce’s 27 overall league strikes last season – as the Italian minnows just finished above the relegation zone in 17th – coming courtesy of the dangerous Montenegrin.

For £3m cheaper than Muniz, it’s a no-brainer to go after this striker target instead of chasing after the expensive Fulham man, with Krstovic even previously being hailed as possessing a “hunger for goals” by one of his former bosses in Roberto D’Aversa.

£20m+ spent as "next Neymar" joins: AI predicts 5 players Celtic will sign

Celtic enjoyed another successful season in 2024/25 under Brendan Rodgers, winning another Scottish Premiership title while also lifting the Scottish League Cup.

The Hoops narrowly missed out on a domestic treble, however, attention is already turning to the new campaign with additions already made in the transfer market.

Kieran Tierney’s return to Celtic Park has now been confirmed, with the left-back joining on a free transfer after his contract at the Emirates expired. Talking after re-joining Celtic, Tierney was delighted.:

The Scot will be looking to add to his tally of 11 Celtic honours over the coming years, but who else could join Tierney and Fulham youngster Callum Osmand through the Parkhead door this summer?

Celtic's most expensive sales of all time

Celtic have let some of their finest talents move for big money in the past.

ByCharlie Smith Oct 3, 2025

Grok the AI tool on X, has predicted five more signings Celtic could make this summer, totalling more than £20m.

AI predicts 5 players Celtic will sign this summer 1 Mathias Kvistgaarden Brondby (£8m)

A new attacking addition looks set to be on the to-do list at Parkhead, with Mathias Kvistgaarden a long-term target for the Hoops.

Wanted by Celtic over the last 12 months, they have once again been linked with a move this summer. The closest Rodgers’ side have come to signing Kvistgaarden was in January after Kyogo Furuhashi left to join Rennes.

Grok have put an estimated £8m transfer fee on a deal as Celtic search for their Kyogo replacement.

2 Lennon Miller Motherwell (£5m)

Lennon Miller continues to be a man in-demand after starring at Motherwell, with Celtic among the many clubs looking to sign the talented teenage midfielder.

Recent claims have suggested that the Hoops are set to go back in for the 18-year-old after seeing a bid turned down in January, and Grok thinks a transfer could be worth £5m for the now Scotland international.

Amid reports of Sunderland looking at signing Miller for £10m, Celtic may well be delighted if they can sign him for half the price.

3 Harley Mills Peterborough United (£2m)

Despite already signing Tierney, Celtic could still yet bring another left-back to Glasgow to replace Greg Taylor.

Peterborough United’s Harley Mills may well be that man to provide competition to Tierney, with an approach made by the Hoops for the EFL ace.

Mills starred at Wembley for Peterborough against Birmingham in their Vertu Cup final victory, scoring a free-kick, and he could cost up to £2m according to Grok.

4 Nilson Angulo Anderlecht (£5m)

Celtic have been predicted to bring in a South American winger over the coming months, and Nilson Angulo, dubbed as “the next Neymar” in the media, may well be that man.

An Ecuador international, the Hoops recently expressed an interest in signing Angulo, who can play on either flank. He has already played in the Europa League for Anderlecht and is still just 21 years of age.

Grok say a ‘young, dynamic winger would fit Rodgers’ vision for Champions League impact’, and Angulo could be that man in a deal potentially worth up to £5m.

5 James Penrice Hearts (£2m)

Described by Grok as a domestic solution for defensive depth, Hearts left-back James Penrice is another who has been backed to move to Celtic Park this summer in a deal worth up to £2m.

This comes after Celtic scouted the 26-year-old, who impressed at Tynecastle in what was a struggling Hearts side.

As well as playing in his primary left-back role, Penrice can also turn out as a left midfielder or as a central midfielder, providing plenty of versatility for Rodgers.

Deal close: Jeremie Frimpong will "soon" be a Liverpool player

Liverpool have now expressed their intention to trigger the release clause of a “sensational” star, with their offer set to be accepted, according to journalist Sacha Tavolieri.

Reds stepping up summer transfer plans

With the Premier League title wrapped up, the Reds can now start to look ahead to the summer transfer window, and despite a remarkable first season in the Anfield dugout, it appears as though Arne Slot is looking to strengthen his squad in a number of areas.

Given that Andy Robertson is now 31-years-old, a long-term heir may be required at left-back, and the Premier League champions have now identified AFC Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez as their top target, with a deal set to be possible for £45m.

Talks have also been opened over a deal for Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz, with Slot looking to bolster his options in attacking midfield, while Federico Chiesa could be included as part of a swap deal for Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman.

Liverpool officials impressed after watching 28-cap "phenomenon" in action

BySean Markus Clifford May 13, 2025

With Trent Alexander-Arnold deciding to join Real Madrid this summer, Slot may also have to bring in a new right-back to compete with Conor Bradley, and there has now been a new update on the pursuit of Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong.

Taking to X, Tavolieri has claimed that Liverpool are “closing” in on a “deal” for Frimpong, having now expressed their intention to trigger the defender’s release clause, which is thought to be in the region of £34m.

Bayer Leverkusen's JeremieFrimpongscores their first goal

The offer is set to be accepted by the German club, opening the door for a move to Anfield, with personal terms not expected to be an issue. Reliable reporter David Ornstein previously revealed the right-back is keen on joining Liverpool and Tavolieri claims Frimpong will “soon” be a Red.

Versatile Frimpong could be ideal option for Slot

With Trent set to exit Anfield this summer, Bradley will be the only senior right-back on the books, and Micah Richards believes the Northern Irishman is good enough to become the new first-choice option.

However, with Slot looking to compete on all fronts next season, the manager may feel more depth is needed at right-back, and there are signs that Frimpong could be a top signing, having previously been lauded as “sensational” by members of the media.

Another perk of signing the Dutchman is the fact that he is also capable of playing further forward, predominantly featuring at right-midfield this season, which indicates he could provide cover for Mo Salah, should the Egyptian get injured or need resting.

As such, the fact that a deal is edging closer to completion is fantastic news for Liverpool, who will be pleased to have found a replacement for Trent so early, rather than the process of finding a new right-back dragging on throughout the summer.

Mega Martinelli upgrade: Arsenal could see £80m bid accepted for Barca star

While their Premier League ambitions have ultimately come to nothing for a third season on the bounce, Arsenal have started to look far better in recent weeks.

They dispatched Fulham at home and Ipswich Town away in the league and utterly dominated Real Madrid home and away in the Champions League, with the likes of Mikel Merino, Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka stepping up in a big way.

However, another player has really started to come good in recent weeks: Gabriel Martinelli.

He was simply sublime against Fulham, scored the winning goal at the Bernabeu and then bagged his 50th for the club at Portman Road at the weekend, but even then, it might not be enough, as recent reports have linked the Gunners’ with a Ballon d’Or contender who could be a dream upgrade on the Brazilian.

Arsenal's hunt for a new winger

Before getting to the player in question, it’s worth looking at some of the other names linked with Arsenal in recent weeks, such as Rafael Leao.

The AC Milan superstar is enjoying another brilliant campaign at the San Siro this season and has already amassed a haul of 22 goal involvements in 45 appearances, but according to reports, it would cost the Gunners around £86m.

A slightly cheaper but nonetheless exciting option is Viktor Gyokeres.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The Sporting CP star was on the Gunners’ radar last year, but it looks as if he really could be making his way to the Emirates this summer, and considering he’s scored 47 goals and provided 11 assists in just 46 appearances this term, he’d be more than worth the reported £60m price tag.

Another star from the continent who’d be more than worth his price is Raphinha.

According to a recent report from journalist Graeme Bailey, Arsenal are one of several sides who have been hinted at by intermediaries that they could sign Barcelona star Raphinha this summer.

Alongside the North Londoners, Liverpool and Chelsea have also reportedly been told they could land the Brazilian superstar this year, although to do so, they’ll have to stump up the club’s asking price of around £80m.

It could be an incredibly costly and complicated transfer to get over the line, but given Raphinha’s ability, it’s one well worth fighting for, even if it would be bad news for Martinelli.

How Raphinha compares to Martinelli

Now, while Raphinha can play on both wings and has even played in attacking midfield at times, he’d almost certainly play off the left were he to join Arsenal for two reasons: it’s his most played position, and nobody is going to displace Bukayo Saka.

FCBarcelona'sRaphinhacelebrates after Fermin Lopez scored their fifth goal

With that said, Martinelli would likely be the former Leeds United star’s most significant competition for game time in North London, so who comes out on top when we compare them?

Well, when it comes to their raw output, which is what matters most for an attacker, it’s not even close, as the Barcelona ace comes out miles ahead.

For example, in 48 appearances this term, totalling 3924 minutes, he has racked up a frankly astonishing tally of 30 goals and 23 assists, which comes out to an average of 1.10 goal involvements every game or one every 74.03 minutes.

It’s the sort of output which more than justifies Thierry Henry’s shout for him to win the Ballon d’Or earlier in the season.

In contrast, the Gunners’ number 11 has scored nine goals and provided six assists in 44 games, totalling 2978 minutes, which comes out to an average of a goal involvement every 2.93 games or one every 198.53 minutes, which is hardly even comparable.

Furthermore, on the international stage, the “amazing” Barcelona star, as dubbed by analyst Ben Mattinson, has scored 11 goals and provided seven assists in 33 appearances for the Seleção, whereas the former Ituano gem has scored just two goals in 16 appearances.

Ultimately, while Martinelli has stepped up in recent weeks and is starting to look like the player from the 22/23 campaign, his output still pales in comparison to Raphinha’s, so if there is any chance of signing the latter, Arsenal must take it.

'I'm lost for words' – The Travishek show leaves LSG stunned

Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma brought their fear factor in the chase in a proper takedown of pace as well as spin

Deivarayan Muthu09-May-20242:15

Rapid Fire Review: Head and Abhishek, or Salt and Narine?

“Oh, wow!”This was Abhishek Sharma’s reaction to his strike rate of 205.64 in IPL 2024. The rest of the world reacted similarly to the unreal demolition job led by Travis Head and Abhishek on Wednesday in Hyderabad. They chased down 166 in a mere 58 balls. It was the highest-ever ten-over score in men’s T20 cricket. Head clattered 89 not out off 30 and Abhishek 75 not out off 28. Lucknow Super Giants captain KL Rahul did not know what hit them.Related

Mumbai Indians knocked out after SRH demolish LSG

Travishek (Travis and Abhishek) had clattered a world-record 125 together in the powerplay in Delhi earlier this season while batting first. Perhaps, fearing that history might repeat itself in a high-stakes fixture, with the race for the playoffs heating up, Rahul opted to take first strike and challenged Sunrisers Hyderabad to chase a target, something that has bothered them this IPL.History, however, did repeat itself, with Travishek bringing their fear factor in a chase too. As for LSG, they’ve been particularly efficient at defending totals. Since their inception in 2022, they’ve batted first in 22 games, and have won 15. Their win-loss ratio of 2.5 is the best among all teams in the league. On Wednesday, though, they had no answer to SRH’s opening salvo and their defence was breached even before they could bring in their Impact Player.ESPNcricinfo Ltd”I’m lost for words,” a shell-shocked Rahul said after the match. “We watched that kind of batting on TV but this was like unreal batting…I have no words to describe how well they were hitting the ball. Everything seemed to find the middle of the bat and I guess kudos to the skill level and I’m sure all of them have worked really, really hard with their six-hitting ability and you can see that in the middle.”We always knew that we were a lot of runs short but the way they batted even if we had gotten 250, it seemed like they would get it.”LSG had entered the game with solid plans. They gave offspinner K Gowtham his first match of the season and matched him up with the left-handed pair of Head and Abhishek in the powerplay on what appeared like a sluggish surface in the first half. But SRH’s openers took the pitch out of the equation and whacked Gowtham for 29 in his first two overs.Gowtham had aimed to take the ball away from Head from around the wicket, but the batter jumped out of his crease, didn’t allow the ball to turn and launched a six into the sightscreen. Gowtham then shifted to plan B – bowl into the pitch and slide it into the body of Head – but the result was still the same, with the ball landing near the sightscreen.

Ravi Bishnoi, the wristspinner, also tried to hide the ball away from Head’s swinging arc and spear it on wide lines. LSG were doing death bowling in the powerplay and SRH were doing death batting in that phase. When Bishnoi dragged a wrong ‘un fractionally short and outside off, most batters would have shaped to cut it square through the off side or even open up their hips to pull it over the leg side. But Head is not most batters. He unleashed a jaw-dropping back-foot drive over long-off – as only he can. Then, when Bishnoi went short and outside off once again, Head stayed leg-side of the ball and crunched him to the point boundary. Head is usually a pace-hitter, but he showed that he can be just as destructive against spin.”It’s something that I’ve been working on. [Playing] spin,” Head said winning the Player-of-the-Match award. “Got a lot of spin today. It’s something I’ve been working hard. Obviously in the next little bit, it’s going to be a big part of the [cricket in the] Caribbean as well, in the World Cup. Nice that I was able to go 360 tonight and get it to some parts of the ground that I don’t normally get it to.”ESPNcricinfo LtdAbhishek has always been destructive against spin. Against any variety of spin. His takedown of Rashid Khan in 2022 had reminded current SRH coach Daniel Vettori, who was an ESPNcricinfo expert at the time, of Chris Gayle no less.In this season, Abhishek has come of age and pressed on to achieve something that even Gayle couldn’t in his 13-year IPL career: score 400-plus runs at a 200-plus strike rate in a season. Head, of course, has also done that double this IPL. Travishek aside, only Andre Russell had achieved the dual feat in 2019.”I would never think [of] going to such a tournament [IPL] and playing at such a strike rate,” Abhishek said. “Thanks to the [team] management, I would say, the way they’ve shown faith in me and I guess it was pretty much clear for the batters and I just went there and enjoyed myself.”I think [the success is down to] the hard work I put in before the tournament, that’s showing a bit now. And special thanks to Yuvi [Yuvraj Singh] , Brian [Lara], and of course my dad is my first coach. So, they put a lot of hard work on me and I’m just trying do what they’ve taught me and it’s going really well.”So far, Head and Abhishek have contributed to nearly 41% of the runs SRH have scored this IPL. And they’re looking good to add to that share, irrespective of the conditions and irrespective of whether they bat first or chase. With two more home games coming up, SRH are well-placed to make the playoffs. Good luck to whoever comes up against them in knockouts. Because however hard you try, Travishek can make you feel helpless.

Unburdened, unshackled, unbelievable: Jos Buttler channels AB de Villiers in record onslaught

Destructive romp through Amstelveen shows true colours of world’s best limited-overs batter

Matt Roller17-Jun-2022The old computer game Stick Cricket had a strapline which would flash up at the start of every game: “EVERY ball can be hit for six”. On a sweltering day in Amstelveen, the leafy suburb of Amsterdam, Jos Buttler was informed by the same mentality. He hit 14 sixes in 70 balls, one every five balls, with most of them disappearing into the neighbouring forest.First, the records: Buttler’s hundred was his and England’s second-fastest, off 47 balls, and his strike rate of 231.42 was the highest-ever by an England ODI centurion. Their total of 498 for 4 was the highest in ODI and List A cricket, and inches away from the first-ever total of 500 in a 50-over game. Another statistical landmark seemed to come within reach every over, as England re-wrote their own history books. But the numbers alone fail to do Buttler justice. His 162 not out was an exhibition of hitting from the world’s best limited-overs batter in front of 5,000 or so travelling supporters revelling in the sweltering heat, one which stripped the game back to its most simple principles: a batter looking to hit the ball as far as possible against a bowler trying – and failing – to stop him.It was only six months ago that Buttler looked as though he was carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders, epitomised by his thousand-yard stare after dropping Marnus Labuschagne in Adelaide. He had been worn down by 18 months of non-stop bubbles, locked away in hotel rooms without his young family, and by the end of the Ashes, he looked like a broken man.And even at the IPL, there was a certain corporate sheen to Buttler’s success: he spent most of the tournament wearing a cap sponsored by a state-owned Saudi oil company, giving interview after in-house interview about how the support of the ‘Rajasthan Royals family’ had been the key factor in his MVP-winning season. Despite his remarkable numbers, there was such a heavy reliance on him that his failures felt like gut-punches.Jos Buttler launched a blistering assault in the final 20 overs•Getty ImagesBut at the VRA ground, the defining feature of his innings was the purity of the spectacle: unburdened, unshackled, unbelievable. Promoted to No. 4, Buttler walked out at 223 for 2 with 20.2 overs remaining and almost immediately teed off: he slapped his sixth ball down the ground for four with a lightning-fast snap of the wrists, and after lofting his 12th over the press box for six, he never looked back. The Dutch gave him two lives: on 17, Vikramjit Singh misjudged the trajectory of a fierce slap, running in from long-on only to see the ball clear him and land just over the rope; on 37 (remarkably, only four balls later), Musa Ahmed put down a much more straightforward chance on the long-off boundary. With Buttler in full flow, no part of the surrounding area was safe. Balls landed on a hospitality tent, a hockey pitch, a riverbank and the pavilion roof; nine were lost in total at an estimated cost of over €1,000. He hogged the strike in a partnership of 184 off 90 balls with Dawid Malan, contributing 139 off 60 himself, then played second fiddle as Liam Livingstone hammered 66 not out off 22 balls. This was a glimpse of Buttler at his free-spirited best: the polished, complete version of 2022 with a streak of the fresh-faced Somerset youngster that Matthew Mott, England’s new white-ball coach, remembers taking his old Glamorgan sides to pieces. There were shades of his childhood idol, AB de Villiers, in Buttler’s innings: scoring all the way around the ground, lofting straight and slapping through cover, and mocking Pieter Seelar’s field-settings by clearing the infield whenever he brought a man up to plug another gap.Related

Buttler has spent most of his ODI career batting at No. 6, with occasional promotions in the absence of others or in certain game situations, but it would be no surprise if England decide to back him as their No. 4 in the build-up to their World Cup defence in India next year in the de Villiers mould.England see Buttler as their most valuable resource and, as evidenced by his evolution into a world-beating opener in their T20I team, are keen for him to face as many balls as possible, giving him the greatest possible chance to impact the game. He seems unlikely to open in ODIs – he is simply too valuable to risk against a new ball from each end – and Joe Root is locked in at No. 3 in a full-strength team, but No. 4 looks like the perfect fit.Buttler’s career record in this format is now comparable to de Villiers’ own but reflecting their different roles in the side and the eras in which they played: his average is 20% lower, his strike rate 20% higher. Buttler couldn’t quite keep the pace with de Villiers’ own , his 149 off 44 against West Indies in 2015 – but he was not far behind.Since the start of England’s home season in 2017, Buttler has averaged 47.13 with a strike rate of 124.66, a saccharine cocktail of dependability and destruction; for the Barmy Army, it was the perfect chaser on an afternoon soaked in beer and boundaries.

'MLB Tonight' Runs Most Poorly-Timed No-Hitter Alert of All-Time

The Houston Astros beat the Miami Marlins 8-2 on Monday night. Marlins starting pitcher Sandy Alcantara gave up six earned runs on nine hits in seven innings. Despite these facts, MLB Network's still found an opportunity to run a "no-hitter alert" during Alcantara's outing.

The in-game look and graphic happened in the bottom of the 4th inning as host Greg Amsinger made the case that it was not too early to be talking about Alcantara's bid for a no-hitter.

"If you're sitting on your couch and rolling your eyes that we just ran that graphic," Amsinger said, taking aim at anyone who believes in jinxes. "A no-hitter alert? If you think that we're impacting Sandy Alcantara in Secaucus, New Jersey… Man, therapy's not that expensive."

Then as Amsinger continued saying, "Look, you think he's going to give up a hit," Alcantara proceeded to give up a hit.

Here's that moment:

Keep in mind this happened with zero outs in the 4th inning.

The panel immediately cracked up and Amsinger quickly changed his tune. "If you're sitting on your couch and you don't think we impact no-hitters, you don't know what the hell you're talking about."

Somehow it only got sillier from there. After retiring the first nine hitters of the game, the first four batters to walk to the plate in the fourth inning got a hit. The first out of the inning came on a fielder's choice that scored a run. By the time Yanier Diaz hit a two-run double, the Astros were up 5-0.

To be fair to Amsinger and , the no-hitter alert is not something that the show takes 100% seriously. Last summer ran a no-hitter alert before a game between the Marlins and Los Angeles Dodgers. You may recall that Dodgers' starting pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto immediately gave up a home run to Jazz Chisholm on the very first pitch of the game to break it up, much to the delight of everyone.

Arsenal dealt bitter blow as Cristhian Mosquera faces SIX WEEKS out

Arsenal have been hit with another damaging defensive setback as summer signing Cristhian Mosquera is expected to miss at least six weeks after suffering a complicated ankle injury in the midweek win over Brentford. With Gabriel Magalhaes and William Saliba already sidelined, the Gunners now face a mounting crisis at centre-back during a pivotal period of their season.

  • Mosquera set to miss at least six weeks for Arsenal

Mosquera was forced off during Arsenal’s 2-0 victory over Brentford after landing awkwardly and requiring immediate treatment, prompting fears of a significant ankle injury. The BBC suggest that initial assessments indicate the Spanish defender will miss between six and eight weeks, with the club awaiting further test results to confirm the extent of the damage. His withdrawal added to a growing list of defensive absentees, intensifying concerns for Arteta as the Gunners continue to compete on multiple fronts.

The setback comes at a time when Arsenal are already without their first-choice centre-back pairing of Saliba and Gabriel, who have missed recent fixtures due to respective injuries. Saliba is reportedly only “days” away from returning after suffering a knock in training, while Gabriel may be sidelined until January with a thigh issue. Mosquera had been deputising alongside Piero Hincapie, giving Arteta some stability in defence before this latest injury blow.

Arsenal remain top of both the Premier League table and their Champions League group, but Mosquera’s absence threatens to disrupt their momentum in a crucial run of fixtures.

Arteta opens up on Mosquera's 'complicated' injury

Mosquera’s injury deepens a defensive crisis that has been quietly building for Arsenal, despite the club’s impressive start to the campaign. Prior to Wednesday’s setback, injuries to Gabriel and Saliba had already forced Arteta to lean heavily on his new summer signing, who had settled quickly into Premier League football. Losing him during a demanding fixture schedule places additional strain on a back line that has been reshuffled repeatedly since August.

Arteta acknowledged the seriousness of the situation when addressing the media, noting that Mosquera’s issue is “more complicated” and requires further medical analysis compared to Declan Rice's injury. “Well, let’s see. We have another training session in the afternoon. Every hour is going to be very important to see the availability of the players. After that, we’ll decide which ones,” Arteta said.

Arteta added: “That’s [Mosquera] the more complicated one, but again, we have another test today to see where we are with them. We need to know, because the feeling that we had after the game and yesterday, we need to corroborate with what happens with all the testing that we do today.”

  • Arsenal must cope without Mosquera, Saliba and Gabriel

Arsenal’s form has been strong, with just one defeat in 14 Premier League matches, but their challenge now is maintaining that performance level while dealing with significant injuries in key positions. Defensive continuity has been central to their revival under Arteta, and instability in this area could impact both their league campaign and Champions League ambitions.

Mosquera’s adaptation to English football had been one of Arsenal’s quiet success stories of the season, with the 21-year-old showing maturity, composure, and athleticism since arriving from Valencia. He had been trusted to fill in for both Saliba and Gabriel, performing consistently despite the pressure of stepping into such prominent roles. His injury not only removes a reliable option but also disrupts the promising partnership he was forming with Piero Hincapie.

Mosquera will not return to action before February

The Gunners travel to third-placed Aston Villa next before facing Club Brugge in Europe, two matches in which defensive solidity will be vital. With squad depth now stretched, the timing of Mosquera and Rice's injuries could not be worse for a team hoping to maintain their early-season dominance.

Arsenal’s broader injury picture compounds the concern, as midfielders and attackers have only recently returned from layoffs while defensive problems persist. The squad has already endured periods without Martin Odegaard and Noni Madueke, but the back line remains the most fragile department. As domestic and European competitions intensify heading into December, managing workload and avoiding further setbacks will be critical for Arteta’s plans.

Shafali Verma, Player of the Match: “At the start, I had said that God has sent me to do something special and that reflected today. I’m very happy that we’ve won the World Cup. I can’t express it in words. It was tough [coming into the tournament midway] but I was confident that if I keep self belief and stayed calm, then I can do anything. My parents, friends and my brother supported me immensely. Today, I was thinking that I need to make runs anyhow and that the team needed to win. My mind was quite clear and I batted according to my plans. I was happy they got executed. Smriti was talking to me continuously, Harman is always a supporter. Team-mates also supported me, they were very welcoming too. Seniors just said to play my natural game, not to move away from my natural game. [Sachin Tendulkar watching from the stands] It is a very memorable moment for me. When I saw Sachin sir, I got a special kind of boost. I speak to him occasionally, he gives me a boost always. Today also I got inspired just by seeing him.”Deepti Sharma, Player of the Tournament: “Honestly, this still feels like a dream. We have not yet got rid of the emptions. I am so happy to contribute in a World Cup final. I feel really glad. We just wanted to take the positive takeaways from every match. On the fans, I will say, they have come in huge numbers. I want to thank the fans, they have supported us in every match. This was not possible without them. As a team, we feel great after this result. I just want to enjoy every department. I like challenges. I had the bat and ball in my hand. I just had to play according to the situation, and I enjoyed a lot. What better a moment, on this stage, to perform as an allrounder for the team… can’t get better than this. [On Laura Wolvaardt] I think Laura played a very good innings. We were not relaxed. We were very calm, kept on cheering everyone up in the drinks break. As a bowling unit, we wanted to take it till the last ball. We just wanted focus on our best balls. and we did that. [On the changes she wants to see] There has been a lot of change after 2017 and I hope we get more matches. So that will be great.”Related

Amanjot Kaur: “Everyone playing knew how important Wolvaardt’s catch was. I guess I fumbled first time ever in my life, glad I got a second chance. That’s all, I don’t have words to express. [What does this mean?] This means a lot. You can see the crowd cheering. We have created history. This is just the starting, Indian cricket will be at the next level. We are going to dominate all over the world in every format. [Message to family] Congrats to everyone. My family, my coaches, whoever has family here or those sitting at home. My grandmother is not well, she is watching at home. [The support] I think it’s their victory as well. Because they came in huge numbers to support us. This is for you Mumbai, this is for everyone, this is for Pratika who missed out due to injury. I know how it feels to miss out a match due to injury. Not everything is good but there’s good in everything. Very grateful.”Pratika Rawal gets off her wheelchair to celebrate with her team-mates•ICC/Getty ImagesRicha Ghosh: “[On the importance of the win] This win has a lot of importance. We have been waiting for the World Cup for a long time, [had the lingering feeling of] when we will lift the trophy. And today we have won the trophy. We are champions. I can’t explain this feeling but we are all very happy. You can see how emotional everyone is. It’s totally different. [Talk in the huddle] I think in the huddle, the talk was this is the last day, one more day and we just wanted to give it all. No matter what happens, we just wanted to put our bodies on the line. [On the finish] There was pressure of the final, there is so much crowd and fans. But I wanted to performed well, that was the main thing. Everyone trusted me that I can go out and hit and that helped me a lot.”Pratika Rawal: “Well, I can’t express enough. There’s no words. It’s not going to come out of my mouth. This flag on my shoulder, it means a lot to me. And you know, being here with my team, it’s just surreal. I mean, injuries are part and parcel of the game. I’m very happy that I was a part of this team, this winning team. You know, this team, I just love this team. I can’t express my feelings towards this team. So I’m very happy that we actually made it. And we’re the first [Indian] team who has won the World Cup in so long. And the whole India deserves this. To be very honest, it was very difficult for me to sit out and watch the match because it’s actually very difficult. It’s very easy to play inside, rather than watching from the outside. But seeing this energy, seeing this environment, it just, you know, it gave me goosebumps. Whenever there was a wicket, whenever there was a sixer, you can see the energy. It’s amazing. It’s genuinely amazing.”Jemimah Rodrigues is ecstatic after India’s win•ICC/Getty ImagesSmriti Mandhana: “I don’t know how to react to that [being World Champions]. Still sinking in. I haven’t been emotional on a cricket field, but just a very unreal moment. Home World Cup. Just to read ‘Champions – India’, I am still not able to process it. Every World Cup we go in and there’s been so many heartbreaks for all of us. But we always believe we’ve got a bigger responsibility with women’s cricket and genuinely to see the support we’ve got in the last one and a half months… I mean, I don’t know how to explain the last 40 days. But to end it with a World Cup win today, I will take the 45 days of not sleeping every night. [After exit from last T20 World Cup before the semi-final] The last T20 World Cup was a difficult one for all of us, but we had a clear focus on trying to work on our fitness, trying to be better at each aspect. The super-strength of this team – no one will talk about it – is how everyone just stuck in, played for each other. In a World Cup you need everyone’s support, good days and bad days. We enjoyed each others’ success. I can’t tell you how the team environment is… that’s just magic.”Amol Muzumdar: “[Feelings] Absolutely proud, there’s no doubt about it. I don’t know, it’s not sunk in yet. It’s an unbelievable achievement by all the girls. They deserve every credit, they deserve everything that will follow from here because they have worked incredibly hard. I know for a fact that they have done every Indian proud. [On the earlier losses] We did not look at those losses as losses, we just thought we couldn’t get over the line. We dominated a lot of those. There were some hiccups in the campaign, but we were still alive in the tournament and here we are on 2nd November, 2025 as World Champions. [On what this does for women’s cricket in the country] I don’t know, I really don’t know. I am sure they deserve everything what will follow hereon. They have worked extremely hard for this. It is a watershed moment for Indian cricket. [A word on Shafali?] One word… magical. Absolute magical. Turns up in the semi-final, no pressure.. in the finals, home crowd, packed stadiums, turns up a blinder of an innings and then picks up a few wicket with the ball. Absolutely magical.[On the fielding] That was one thing we spoke a lot in the dressing room in the last two years that fielding and fitness was really something we spoke about and focused on it. And here we are… they just turned it up on this day in a World Cup final. I couldn’t have asked for more.”
