Carlo Ancelotti has dropped a double injury blow for Everton ahead of their home game versus Southampton in the Premier League on Monday night.

Speaking in his pre-game press conference ahead of the match against the St. Mary’s faithful, the Italian boss revealed that there has been no date set for Jean-Philippe Gbamin to return to training, while Yerry Mina faces another two weeks out of action.

Double Everton injury blow

The Merseyside club will be without both Mina and Gbamin for the fixture against Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men at Goodison Park, and will no doubt miss the former especially.

Mina has been nothing short of a rock for the Toffees in the heart of the defence, winning no fewer than 4.7 of his duels a game in the Premier League so far in the 2020/21 term, as well as averaging 4.5 clearances, 1.1 interceptions and one tackle per appearance (Sofascore).

As for Gbamin, it is a case of whether the Blues will ever be able to see him play for EFC again. The central midfield player has had an awful time with injuries ever since his move from Mainz, and has only played in a mere two senior matches in all competitions for Everton, with his last one coming all the way back in August 2019.

Nonetheless, Ancelotti’s team will have to find a way to get all three points against the Saints without both of them.

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly interested in signing Southampton centre-back Jannik Vestergaard this summer and the Saints must ensure that they don’t end with a repeat of the situation that has seen Virgil van Dijk become one of the best centre-backs in the world after leaving the South Coast club.

According to the Mirror, Jose Mourinho is contemplating a move for the 28-year-old ahead of the summer as he looks to improve his defensive options at the North London club.

The former Borussia Monchengladbach man has established himself as a key player under Ralph Hasenhuttl this season and has been one of the best performers in the top-flight, having contributed three goals in 21 top-flight appearances, which has helped him average an impressive 7.09 rating.

Only James Ward-Prowse has scored a higher rating in the Premier League so far this season, which emphasises just how important the Dane has become at the South Coast club, so it would be a big loss if the £13.5 million-rated defender were to leave.

Losing such a key defender would perhaps be similar to the deal that saw Van Dijk join Liverpool in 2017, with the Dutchman departing the Saints in a club-record deal and helping to revolutionise Jurgen Klopp’s side, helping them to success in the Premier League and Champions League.

Vestergaard’s performances this season have earned him comparisons to Van Dijk from Martin Keown and considering the 6 foot 6 man’s impressive ability in the air, it is easy to see why.

However, the Danish international has also developed his ability on the ball, averaging an 83.7% pass accuracy rate this season compared to a 77.1% accuracy during  the last campaign.

Hasenhuttl is clearly a big fan of the defender, having described him as a “role model”, whilst his partnership with Jan Bednarek at the back was a big part of Southampton’s impressive form earlier in the season.

Therefore, Martin Semmens should do everything he can to keep hold of the centre-back this summer, as he is clearly an important part of this Saints side, and losing him to a side like Spurs could well lead to a repeat of Van Dijk’s incredible rise after St Mary’s.

وواصل: “بغض النظر عني، كان الأولاد من فئة مختلفة في ظروف صعبة بشكل لا يصدق”.

Crystal Palace suffered an embarrassing defeat at the hands of Jurgen Klopp as Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah both scored twice to lift Liverpool six points clear at the top of the Premier League table.

There’s no two ways of saying this, but the Reds largely dominated proceedings from start to finish, as Roy Hodgson’s side struggled to get a foothold in the game.

It wasn’t for want of trying, as Palace strove to break the deadlock in the first period, but they were shortly overwhelmed by the defending champions, who raced into the lead with relative ease after Mane teed up Takumi Minamino to slot home in the third minute.

Not that you’d know it, but Liverpool hadn’t won away from home in the league since September, though they seem to be well on their way to retaining the title as they are set to be top of the table at Christmas for the third consecutive season in a row.

Barely any of Palace’s players were at the races today, in particular Nathaniel Clyne, who badly let Hodgson down with his abysmal display.

The £3.6m-rated right-back was lightweight in his individual battles, as he failed to win a single duel from two attempts overall, which meant that he lost 100% of his duels against the league leaders, as per SofaScore.

Clyne lacked confidence and looked short of form against his former club, as he took just 41 touches of the ball, providing only 21 out of 26 attempted passes in total, which is pretty embarrassing especially when you consider the fact that even Gary Cahill made seventeen more.

The 29-year-old, who earns around £80,000-per-week at Selhurst Park, failed to register a single shot or record a single key pass from the right flank and lost possession ten times as well to sum up his frustrations.

In the absence of new summer recruit Nathan Ferguson – who is yet to feature for the first team – Clyne has started eight out of the past nine games in the Premier League so far this season, but was left out of the matchday squad for the trip to the London Stadium to take on West Ham on Wednesday night.

We said at the start of the month that he has a real opportunity to earn himself a contract extension in the wake of Ferguson’s latest setback, but now he’s going to find it even harder to convince Steve Parish to give him a new contract after he let his manager down massively with yet another poor performance.

With Joel Ward waiting in the wings, the former Liverpool defender will now face an anxious few days before the Eagles travel to Aston Villa in a matter of days.

It appears that Southampton sold Jay Rodriguez at the perfect time when he left the Saints in 2017, as he has failed to find the back of the net for Burnley so far this season.

The striker would make 126 appearances for the South Coast club, in which he contributed 35 goals and 14 assists, having joined from Burnley in 2012.

After five years with the club, he joined West Bromwich Albion, before returning to the Turf Moor outfit in the summer of 2019.

In his last season with the Saints, Rodriguez would grab five goals and two assists in 24 Premier League appearances but this clearly wasn’t enough to see him stay with the club and after another fairly poor goalscoring return the next season, he enjoyed his best season to date with the Baggies in the Championship, notching 22 league goals.

This saw him return to the top-flight with Burnley and whilst he was able to score 11 times last season, this campaign has not been a happy one for the 31-year-old so far, as he has failed to find the back of the net in 11 appearances so far this season.

Therefore, it could definitely be argued that Southampton did well to sell the Englishman for around £12 million in 2017, as he has failed to consistently score goals in the top-flight since the 2013/14 season under Mauricio Pochettino, having suffered a serious injury.

His value has decreased in his time since leaving the Saints, as when he left he was valued at £9 million, whereas now he is valued at just £5.4 million.

Unfortunately for the forward, he has also struggled with injuries at times during his career, notably when he missed 50 games with the cruciate ligament rupture in 2013/14, which makes the fee Southampton received for the forward even more impressive.

His performances for Burnley this season have been disappointing, with Rodriguez averaging a 6.21 rating for his performances in the top-flight, reinforcing the point that Southampton sold him at the perfect time, as since his departure, they have certainly progressed, with the likes of Danny Ings and Che Adams now leading the line up front.

Hopefully, for Rodriguez, it isn’t too long until he gets himself back on the scoresheet for the Clarets.

أكدت شبكة “سكاي سبورتس” العالمية منذ قليل علي لسان الصحفي الشهير فابريزيو رومانو، أن أنطونيو كونتي سيصبح المدرب الجديد لفريق توتنهام الإنجليزي.

وكانت إدارة توتنهام قد أعلنت أمس الإثنين الاستغناء عن خدمات المدير الفني نونو سانتو، بسبب سوء نتائج الفريق.

وعانى النادي اللندني تحت قيادة نونو سانتو من النتائج السيئة هذا الموسم، وكان آخرها السقوط بثلاثية على ملعبه أمام مانشستر يونايتد يوم السبت الماضي في الدوري الإنجليزي الممتاز.

وارتبط أنطونيو كونتي بشكل قوي بفكرة خلافة نونو سانتو وتدريب توتنهام، حيث تواصلت إدارة النادي معه على مدار اليومين الماضيين.

وحسب الصحفي فابريزو رومانو، فإن مسؤولي توتنهام قد توصلوا إلى اتفاق نهائي بالفعل مع أنطونيو كونتي حيث سيتولى الأخير مسؤولية تدريب الفريق.

وأفاد أن هناك اتفاق شفهي بين الطرفين في الوقت الحالي، حيث سيوقع كونتي اليوم الثلاثاء عقده مع توتنهام بشكل رسمي حيث سيكون ساريًا حتى عام 2023.

من جانبها، ذكرت صحيفة “تايمز” الإنجليزية أن كونتي سيحصل على راتب سنوي قدره 15 مليون جنيه إسترليني بمقتضى عقده المرتقب مع توتنهام.

Wolves’ Leander Dendoncker has found himself in the spotlight for all of the right reasons, receiving huge praise as a result.

The 25-year-old has been an important figure for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side over the past two seasons, making a total of 35 starts in that time (Whoscored).

This was further illustrated by the Portuguese tactician’s comments over the summer about the 10-cap Belgium international, describing him as a “fantastic footballer and a hard worker” (via Express and Star).

To add to this, The Athletic’s Tim Spiers posted a statistic which shed further good light on Dendoncker. He revealed that, whenever the 6 foot 1 midfielder has started this season, Wolves have taken all three points and kept a clean sheet every time. When he doesn’t feature in the line-up, Nuno’s team have conceded seven goals and lost both encounters.

Understandably, many supporters were quick to praise the Belgian for the work that he’s put in for Wolves, highlighting that he is “criminally underrated”.

Despite having already signed Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg this summer, it appears Jose Mourinho hasn’t finished rebuilding the Spurs midfield ahead of the start of the new Premier League campaign next month.

ESPN claim that the Lilywhites’ reported target, McKennie, is now being pursued by other Premier League clubs, but that it’s Southampton who are currently “leading the race” for the signing of the USA international.

The report adds that a deal for the 21-year-old could reach up to £20m.

Imagine him and Hojbjerg

Whilst Spurs may feel they already have the ‘defensive midfield’ aspect of their squad sorted following the arrival of Hojbjerg, just imagine the kind of unbreakable wall Jose Mourinho could help build if he paired the Denmark international with McKennie.

The Schalke ace is another ball-winning ace whose energy and relentless running is a perfect match for the modern game. His manager at the Bundesliga side, David Wagner, said: “He’s an outstanding talent. In the No.6 or No.8 position he has the mentality, a real working mentality that you need. And he’s brave on the ball as well.”

His teammate at international, Reggie Cannon, further backed that up, revealing: “If you lose the ball, you know he’s going to be the first one running (to get) the ball. He’s a leader and that’s something I can learn from – everyone can learn from to up their game.”

Whilst playing two workman like midfielders in the same line-up seems counter-productive or even defensive, Mourinho could help bring back that solidity that was sorely lacking from Spurs last season – only Chelsea and Burnley conceded more than their 47 Premier League goals out of the top ten.

The teams that Mourinho has been successful with, particularly at the likes of Chelsea and Inter, have had a formidable spine to them – think back to players like Claude Makelele, Michael Essien and Esteban Cambiasso to name but a few. Playing Hojbjerg and McKennie together would offer greater protection to the Spurs back-line and help strike fear into the rest of the Premier League.

Nobody would feel comfortable playing against a duo that hunt down every possession, and get the ball moving up the pitch as quickly as possible. It has all the hallmarks of being a potentially great midfield partnership.
