MI restrict SRH to 162 on slow pitch

Jacks’ utility, pacers bowling slow and trying yorkers ensured SRH couldn’t run away despite finding luck

ESPNcricinfo staff17-Apr-2025Mumbai Indians won what could yet be an important toss – given the chance of dew – and restricted Sunrisers Hyderabad to 162 for 5 on an unusually sluggish surface at the Wankhede Stadium. MI’s bowlers used changes of pace and used the yorker frequently throughout the innings to keep SRH quiet despite an opening stand of 59 between Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head, and it was only thanks to a pair of 21-run overs at the death that SRH got past 160.Five sixes came in those two overs – the 18th and 20th, bowled by Deepak Chahar and Hardik Pandya respectively – and those were the only sixes in SRH’s innings. There was some impressive hitting involved, particularly from Heinrich Klaasen and Aniket Verma, but it was instructive that three of the sixes came off full-tosses.There were seven full-tosses in all over the last three overs, and that could yet be a sign of dew setting in, which could potentially make batting easier for the chasing team. One of those full-tosses produced a wicket, bowling Klaasen as he tried to manufacture room, and it was unsurprisingly delivered by the man with the most challenging full-toss in the game, Jasprit Bumrah. MI’s talisman set the tone for them with 1 for 21 in his four overs, two of which came in the powerplay.Their most successful bowler on the day, though, was Will Jacks, who picked up a remarkable 2 for 14 in three overs. The offspinner, used immediately after the powerplay to match up against SRH’s left-handed top three, found plenty of grip and took the wickets of Ishan Kishan and Head.Jacks not only bossed his match-up but also gave MI breathing room after they lost their legspinner Karn Sharma to an injury in the third over of the match. Karn, the Player of the Match in their last game against Delhi Capitals, went off the field with what seemed to be a split webbing after diving forward at midwicket to try and catch a ball that fell just short of him. With Jacks able to fill in for three overs, MI did not need to replace Karn with a bowler, which left them with the option of bringing on Rohit Sharma as their Impact Player at the start of their chase. Jacks’ overs also allowed MI to use Mitchell Santner’s left-arm spin for only one over against a team with a high number of left-hand batters. That near-chance was the second time in three overs that a ball had not carried to Karn at midwicket. SRH’s top order had endured rough luck in their recent run of four straight defeats, and that luck changed when Abhishek’s scintillating hundred powered them to a successful chase of 246 in their last match against Punjab Kings. Luck continued to go SRH’s way at the start of this game, with Jacks dropping an edge off Abhishek off the first ball of the match, and Head later being caught off a no-ball.But the luck didn’t seem to help SRH’s scoring rate. When he was caught off that no-ball from Hardik in the 10th over, he was batting on 24 off 24 balls. He fell soon after for 28 off 29. Abhishek was a little more fluent, hitting seven fours in a 28-ball 40.Hardik broke the opening stand in the eighth over, getting Abhishek caught on the point boundary, right after enduring a major injury scare. He had seemed to hurt either his left shin or ankle in his follow-through after delivering the previous ball, and seemed to indicate to the MI dugout that he needed a substitute, but as it happened, he managed to dust himself off and continue bowling.

Notts confirm Cowan signing

Ed Cowan, the Australia opener, has been confirmed as Nottinghamshire’s overseas signing for the first half of the 2013 season

ESPNcricinfo staff20-Dec-2012Ed Cowan, the Australia opener, has been confirmed as Nottinghamshire’s overseas signing for the first half of the 2013 season. Cowan, who will likely feature in the Ashes against England later in the summer, will be available for seven rounds of the Championship, as well as eight CB40 matches. The move, first reported on ESPNcricinfo, will give Cowan extra time to get used to batting in English conditions ahead of the Ashes. Notts will be his second county, after a stint with Gloucestershire in 2012, and the 30-year-old has also played in England for Scotland and Oxford MCCU. He currently averages 34 in Test cricket after 11 matches, with one century.”I was very keen to play some Division One cricket and I’m pleased to have the opportunity to do that with Nottinghamshire,” Cowan said. “There are a lot of good players at the Club and Trent Bridge is a great venue so I’m hoping to make a good contribution on and off the field.”Nottinghamshire, who finished fifth in Division One in 2012, will look to recruit another overseas player after Cowan’s departure. Last season, Adam Voges filled the overseas role, while David Hussey had previously been linked with a return to the club.Notts’ director of cricket, Mike Newell, said: “Ed has an excellent record in Test cricket and there was an opportunity to sign him for a decent period given that a lot of Australian players were set to spend time in England on an A tour in preparation for the Ashes. Our priority was to find a player who we felt could score a good volume of runs in four day cricket but Ed has a good one day record as well and we’re confident that he can make a difference for us.”

Além do torneio nacional, o São Paulo disputa a Copa Sul-Americana neste segundo semestre. A equipe está na segunda fase da competição e enfrenta o Colón, da Argentina, por uma vaga no próximo mata-mata.

Bowlers' inexperience not an issue – Dhoni

MS Dhoni has said he is confident of his bowling line-up delivering against West Indies during the first Test despite their inexperience

ESPNcricinfo staff05-Nov-2011India captain MS Dhoni has said he is confident of his bowling line-up delivering against West Indies during the first Test, which begins in New Delhi on Sunday, despite their inexperience. He said there should be at least two debutants for India.”We’re expecting at least two debuts,” Dhoni said. “It’s not difficult [with so many new bowlers] because, if you see the bowlers who will play, [they] have played the ODI format and had a fair amount of exposure when it comes to international cricket.”They will not get really excited. The seniors are there to help them and rescue them [if they’re anxious]. They are looking in good shape.”Of the six specialist bowlers in India’s squad, four of them – R Ashwin, Umesh Yadav, Varun Aaron and Rahul Sharma – have not played a Test as yet. Ishant Sharma, with 38 Tests, is the most experienced of the lot.The Feroz Shah Kotla pitch, Dhoni said, looks like it might have a little more bounce than usual. “The wicket looks good, the bounce might be better than the usual Kotla wicket. It will not turn from the first day but as the game progresses, the spinners will get help.”Light may be a factor, it may mean we start a bit late and end a little early. The last two days have been a little cloudy and misty.”This is India’s first Test series since their 4-0 drubbing in England, and it precedes another big series in Australia, but Dhoni said the team is concentrating on the present. “There’s no good reason why we should be thinking about England. It is all about looking ahead, that is what we have done. The Australia series, though, is too far away, no point thinking about it. West Indies, we will not take them lightly. That is a mistake none of the international sides will make.”He said India will need to start afresh if they want to repair their reputation after the England debacle. “We’re not bothered about the rankings, [but] we want to be the best in the world. We did not do well in England. It becomes a process, it is the start of another process for us, hopefully will get there [to the top] and sustain it.”

Twilight Sheffield Shield matches in front-ended schedule

Twilight Sheffield Shield matches will be tried again as part of the push towards night Test cricket in an Australian domestic schedule heavily influenced by the expansion of Twenty20

Daniel Brettig17-Aug-2011Twilight Sheffield Shield matches will be tried again this summer as part of the push towards night Test cricket, in an Australian domestic schedule heavily influenced by the expansion of the Twenty20 Big Bash League.Night Shield cricket was first experimented with in 1994 but the administrative desire to take Test cricket into the night has driven a return to the gambit, which will take place in a handful of matches played in the states that take part in daylight saving adjustments to local time.Shield and limited-overs matches have been heavily weighted towards the first part of the season, with each state having to play six of 10 regular first-class fixtures by the first week of December. This imbalance has been imposed in order to allow the BBL to operate without any crossover with the demands of the state associations between December 17 and January 28, as numerous players leave their states to play elsewhere for the manufactured city-based teams unveiled for the T20 competition.Australia’s players will face the hurdle of having to choose between the polar extremes of Test matches or T20 throughout the show-piece home series against India. The jump between formats will open plenty of questions in terms of tactical adjustments and physical conditioning should the selectors decide to make changes to the team that will face India, as seems likely.A more positive outcome of the schedule is that domestic aspirants for Test selection will get a significant chance to press their claims ahead of the series against New Zealand and India.Matches will be played in a handful of regional centres also, with Queensland to host a one-day fixture in Mackay while New South Wales play in Canberra. The domestic limited-overs competition has been reduced in size in another concession to T20, as each team will play eight preliminary matches rather than 10.Fixtures will revert to 50 overs after last summer’s experiment with a split-innings format, but other playing conditions will be more experimental in nature.Bowlers will be allowed to bowl a maximum of 13 overs rather than the traditional 10, and the batting Powerplay will have to be taken between overs 16 and 40, a change soon to be implemented in international limited overs matches. Also announced is the schedule for the hotly-debated Futures League second tier competition, which reverts to four-day matches with no over restrictions. The number of players allowed over the age of 23 has also been doubled from three to six, allowing young cricketers a better chance to learn from more experienced teammates.

Spin coach not essential – Hauritz

The absence of a specialist spin-bowling coach in Australia’s full-time touring setup is not a major problem, according to the offspinner Nathan Hauritz

The absence of a specialist spin-bowling coach in Australia’s full-time touring setup is not a major problem, according to the offspinner Nathan Hauritz. Craig McDermott is Australia’s new bowling coach and his brief, like that of his predecessor Troy Cooley, includes mentoring the slow men as well as the fast bowlers.McDermott took 291 Test wickets off the long run-up and would seem as qualified to help the spinners as he would be to advise the batsmen. But Hauritz said while it was in theory a positive to have a specialist on hand to assist the slow bowlers, the information overload provided by an extra coaching staff member was not necessarily a good thing.”It is good, it gives you someone else to talk to about fields and tactics, but sometimes it can confuse things,” Hauritz told ESPNcricinfo. “You can have too much. It can be a bit overwhelming at the end of the day.”There’s so much technology these days. Any spin coach can watch the footage or you can sit down and have a chat over the net, Skype or anything like that. Craig McDermott’s experience and record speaks for itself. I think he’ll be invaluable for the side. And he’s going to offer different opinions about spin bowling as well. It’s all going to be worth listening to.”Australia typically don’t take a spin coach on tours, although the Centre of Excellence mentor John Davison has travelled with the side, as he did on last year’s Test tour of India. England, on the other hand, use the former Pakistan spinner Mushtaq Ahmed as a specialist coach, and his former team-mate Saqlain Mushtaq has advised the New Zealand spinners.Australia’s spin stocks are not exactly brimming with world-class talent, and an international expert might be of use to give Hauritz and his colleagues a different perspective. He said when bowling in the nets on a tour, it was usually the batsmen to whom he turned for advice, as they had a good view of how he was performing.”They’ve generally got the best idea of how the ball is coming down, whether they’re getting beaten in flight, the lines, what sort of fields you’d set,” Hauritz said. “That’s what I like to work with. When you’re bowling against those guys, if you’re doing the right thing and the ball is arriving in the right way, they can give you the best response. If not, then you can work on it from there.”
