Dhaka Gladiators made it to the final of the Bangladesh Premier League with a nine-run victory over Khulna Royal Bengals in the second semi-final, in front of a packed Shere Bangla National Stadium that backed the home team as well as could be expected. Dhaka successfully defended their total of 191 for 4, Khulan making 183 for 7 in 20 overs. Khulna threatened Dhaka for a good part of the chase, courtesy a rapid knock from their captain, Shakib Al Hasan – he scored his first Twenty20 half-century, an unbeaten 86 off 41 balls – but it just wasn’t enough to see the team through.After a revamped Dhaka – Shahid Afridi, Saeed Ajmal and Awais Zia flew in from Dubai in time for the match, following the conclusion of Pakistan’s series against England – chose to bat, Khulna bowled quite poorly from the onset. Dhaka lost the big-hitting Zia and Nazimuddin by the time they got to 22, but then Pakistan’s Imran Nazir smashed 41 off 25 balls with six fours and two sixes to steady them. Nazir fell in the eighth over to another Pakistan player who had arrived at the BPL just in time for the knock-outs – Mohammad Hafeez.Dhaka’s total was chiefly built around a 72-run fourth-wicket stand between Mohammad Ashraful and Azhar Mahmood, who made 65 off 39 balls with six fours and three sixes. Ashraful struck four boundaries and a six in his 33-ball 47. Afridi came in towards the end and provided the final surge, with an 11-ball 27. He was particularly harsh on Shakib, hammering 19 in the left-arm spinner’s last over.In the chase, Khulna lost their overseas batsmen (Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Herschelle Gibbs, Hafeez and Dwayne Smith) within eight overs, but Shakib and Nasir Hossain held on for a fine fifth-wicket stand of 87. Shakib was deprived of a few well-struck runs when two of his straight-drives hit Nasir and the stumps. Yet, he managed to reach his half-century off 22 balls. Big swings to the leg side apart, he gathered runs through flicks, sweeps and scoops off Elias Sunny, Ajmal and Afridi.The thirty-one required off the final over, though, proved just beyond Shakib’s reach – he could manage only 21 runs off Azhar Mahmood. Sunny shone with the ball, taking 3-29 – a credible showing, especially with two top-quality spinners playing alongside him.

Marlon Samuels slammed a century and then picked up two wickets to power the West Indians to a comprehensive victory over a Bangladesh Cricket Board XI in a Twenty20 match in Fatullah. This was their last practice game before the series against Bangladesh kicks off on Tuesday.After choosing to bat, the visitors lost their openers early – Adrian Barath caught at gully for 4 and Lendl Simmons was dismissed for 12. There was little joy for BCB XI after that as Samuels and Andre Russell muscled 102 runs in little more than 10 overs. Samuels got his half-century off 33 deliveries with a drive to long-off while Russell reached his off 31 with a six over long-on. Samuels was explosive in the final four overs of the innings, blasting 41 runs including successive sixes in the penultimate over to take the West Indians to a challenging 195.BCB XI rarely looked likely to chase down the tall target, especially after Darren Sammy removed both openers cheaply. Their captain Shahriar Nafees and No. 4 Raqibul Hasan then made 20s but their scoring-rate wasn’t rapid enough. The home side reached 71 for 3 in ten overs, but were further robbed of momentum after that as the West Indian spinners struck – only 16 runs came in the next five overs and the match was effectively over.

وقال نصار خلال تصريحات برنامج “بوكس تو بوكس” المذاع على قناة “ETC”: “يجوز للمدرب العام القيام بتوجيه اللاعبين بالتشاور مع المدير الفني، وعلى نبيه الالتزام بقرار فيريرا في النهاية، وأنا ضد الهجوم على المدرب البرتغالي، ولكن على فيريرا مراجعة حساباته الفنية في الوقت الحالي”.

وأكمل: “البعض يخطط لعشر سنوات، ونحن لا نعرف التخطيط لموسم واحد فقط، لابد أن يدرك المسئولين أن كرة القدم مهمة بالنسبة للشعب المصري”.

وأردف: “تم تعيين وائل جمعة مديرًا للمنتخب في وقت سابق، فما هي مؤهلاته هل حصل على دورات من فيفا أو له علاقات كبيرة، هناك لاعبون مصريون في أوروبا لا نعلم عنهم شيئًا، أين المسئولين الذين يخططون للكرة المصرية”.

وأتم: “مصر ليس لديها المنتخب الأول، أين العناصر التي سيضمها المدير الفني، وكيف نخطط لكأس العالم 2026، وكل العناصر مع المونديال القادم ستصل لسن كبير، لابد أن تكون هناك خطة، وأن يتم جلب أشخاص لديهم مقومات، يقومون بإدارة كرة القدم”.

The Red Rose county, playing three spinners, defended their competitive 201 for 5 on a slow and low pitch, restricting their visitors to 181 for 9.This was the first competitive match played after the re-orientation of the square during the winter as part of the venue’s redevelopment, with the Statham End and Pavilion End those now in use.Stephen Moore scored 50, Steven Croft 41 and Farveez Maharoof a brisk 38 not out after the hosts had been invited to bat first by visiting captain Keith Parsons. Glen Chapple and Sri Lankan Maharoof then returned figures of 3 for 25 and 3 for 33 respectively in the Unicorns’ chase.Timing the ball was a particular problem for both sides, with Moore and Maharoof looking most at ease. Lancashire only scored 85 runs between overs 10 and 30 but Maharoof and GarethCross, who hit 18 off eleven balls, accelerated as they helped to take 50 off the last five overs.Maharoof cracked four fours and a straight six off the medium pace of Glen Querl to boost Lancashire.Querl was the pick of the visitors’ attack with 2 for 45 from eight overs and spin duo Amar Rashid, the brother of Yorkshire’s Adil, and Chris Peploe also struck.Unicorns opener Jackson Thompson smeared Chapple for six over cover early in their chase but the home captain responded well by taking wickets in three overs to leave the score at 34 for 3 in the ninth. England have been very clear on their selection plans in recent times, but the one area that has caused them plenty of headaches is the limited-overs wicketkeeper and at the 11th hour they have gone back to Matt Prior for the World Cup. Steve Davies will now spend the next three weeks travelling around Australia knowing he’s not wanted in the subcontinent having previously been the favourite for the role.It has been one of the mysteries of English cricket in the last few years as to why Prior has never established himself in the one-day team despite having all the skills to be the ideal man. He will open the batting alongside Andrew Strauss, beginning in the second one-day international at Hobart, where his clean striking should make him perfect for the role. Yet from 55 ODIs, in 27 of which he has been used as an opener, he averages 25.38 and during his last stint in the side he batted in the middle order.England’s squad for the one-day series against Australia was named in mid-December and a month has proved a long time in cricket. Prior timed his Ashes form well, finishing the series with 85 in Melbourne and 118 in Sydney, then joined Victoria for the Big Bash which meant he was never far from Flower’s view.”The circumstances have changed,” Andy Flower, the England team director, said. “Matt Prior did very well out here for the Test matches. He is a combative aggressive cricketer and he fits our aggressive fielding unit. So those are the reasons why he’s been picked for the World Cup.”It was a tough decision,” Flower added. “We always knew the timing of the World Cup announcement would be tricky. It’s not ideal one game into a seven-match series. Steve Davies was picked in our last one-day series in England and he did OK against Pakistan.”We picked him for this series in Australia because of the conditions out here. But as we get closer to the World Cup we’ve made that adjustment and we want Prior to get a few games under his belt before we get out there so he’s going to be arriving in Hobart [on Wednesday].”Another aspect in Prior’s favour will have been his near-faultless work with the gloves during the Ashes series and he is now a world-class keeper. Davies is solid, but the subcontinent can be a tough place for wicketkeeper’s and in one-day cricket, where the smallest margins matter, it could prove valuable to have Prior’s class behind the stumps.This isn’t the first time Flower has been involved in significant selection calls around a global tournament. At the World Twenty20 in the Caribbean, James Anderson missed out for the entire campaign when it was decided Ryan Sidebottom’s left-arm angle and control of yorkers was a better option. Flower has a ruthless streak and Davies has just found that out.”Of course he’s disappointed, any player would be disappointed to be left out of the England side,” Flower said. “It means a lot to our players. They’re very difficult decisions to make because they affect people’s careers, but those are the harsh realities of playing professional sport and Steve and others that are left out will have to accept it.”The other marginally contentious positions in the final 15-man squad were the back-up bowlers, but it was widely expected that Ajmal Shahzad, preferred ahead of Chris Tremlett or Chris Woakes, and James Tredwell, the Kent offspinner, would get the nod.With England’s plans revolving heavily around two spinners they need a frontline option in reserve should illness or injury strike, and Graeme Swann will also miss the warm-up period to be at the birth of his first child, while Shahzad has impressed in his brief international appearances so far.”We wanted to make sure we not only had two frontline spinners or a third in case of injury or illness out there,” Flower said. “Spin will play a significant part in the World Cup, there’s no doubt. He’s been in and around our squad for a while now, just getting tastes of international cricket and hasn’t secured a spot yet. We think he shows a lot of potential. He can reverse swing the ball which will be important on the subcontinent and he’s a good competitor.”At the other end of the experience scale is Paul Collingwood, England’s most capped one-day cricketer, who was dropped for the first match against Australia following his poor Ashes and Twenty20 form. Andrew Strauss said Collingwood needed time away from the spotlight and Flower believes the allrounder, who is also on paternity leave in the build-up to the World Cup, still has a crucial role to play.”He missed out the last game but his experience, his credentials as a player, the energy he gives in the field and the quality of his fielding and obviously the all-round capabilities with bat and ball make him a strong contender,” he said. “The reason why he was left out in the first place was he was struggling recently and needs a little time to reassess but he’ll be back in the side.”Now that the final 15 has been named preparations can swing into full gear for the tournament which starts on February 19. England’s first match is against Netherlands, in Nagpur, three days later and Flower said there will be a duel focus to the rest of the one-day series in Australia.”It’s a balance of both,” he said. “This series is important in its own right. It is very important series for our preparation for the World Cup. Some of our training will evolve around subcontinent-type methods and certainly we’ll be working towards that. I think our one-day cricket has improved significantly over the last couple of years and I believe that we can do well.”

Celtic have been given an injury boost on the double ahead of their next Premiership clash, with Sunday’s opponents deprived of two more players.

The lowdown

Fourth-placed Hibernian are due to welcome the Premiership leaders to Easter Road on Sunday lunchtime, but they will be without James Scott and Elias Melkersen, who have both joined an extensive injury list for the Edinburgh club.

Hibs already knew they would be without Paul Hanlon, Paul McGinn, Joe Newell, Demetri Mitchell, Harry Clarke and Kyle Magennis against Ange Postecoglou’s side.

Celtic have won all three meetings between the teams so far this season, prevailing 3-1 away from home in October before winning 2-0 at Parkhead last month in the Premiership. They also defeated tomorrow’s opponents in the Scottish League Cup final just before Christmas.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Hibs boss Shaun Maloney confirmed the fresh double blow, fearing that his side will miss the ‘speed’ and ruthlessness of Scott in particular.

As quoted by The Scotsman, he said: “Unfortunately, the same six players are still out, and they are senior players. We’ve also lost Elias and James through illness, which is a shame.

“It’s a shame because Elias was progressing, and James Scott brings something to us that I see as a coach. In certain moments in matches he brings that speed and that power to finish games.”

The verdict

Valued at £360,000 by Transfermarkt, Melkersen has yet to make his debut for Hibs following his January move from Bodo/Glimt, who knocked Celtic out of the Europa Conference League this week.

The absence of the £450,000-rated Scott is more significant given that he had featured in four of the last eight games, and Maloney seems to view the Hull City loanee as a potential game-changer off the bench.

In truth, a severely depleted Hibs, who have only picked up five points from their last seven matches, may be dreading this clash with the league leaders, particularly with two more players added to their extensive missing list.
