Matthew Wade has been named as captain of Victoria for the 2013-14 season, ending the decade-long tenure of Cameron White as the state’s leader. Wade, 25, lost the Test wicketkeeping position to Brad Haddin this year but has been identified by the national selectors as a man with leadership potential, having been appointed vice-captain to stand-in skipper Shane Watson for the Delhi Test against India in March.Wade will have big shoes to fill, for only Queensland’s Stuart Law has captained more Sheffield Shield victories (35) than the 33 to which White has led Victoria. White became the youngest player to captain Victoria when in 2003-04 he was appointed leader of the one-day side and he took charge of the first-class team the following season, ultimately captaining Victoria to the Shield titles in 2008-09 and 2009-10.However, White has personally struggled for big runs in recent seasons – his 144 against Queensland in February this year was his first Shield century since 2008-09. The Victoria coach Greg Shipperd said he hoped the change in leadership would give Wade a valuable chance to show his captaincy credentials while also allowing White to focus on his own performance.”Cameron White has been an incredible leader for Victorian cricket,” Shipperd said. “His appointment helped usher in a decade of success and his contribution to the state’s success during this golden era cannot be underplayed. In more recent years he’s transitioned into a coach, as well as a player, imparting his vast knowledge of the game and its unique conditions to the younger members of our squad.”We hope the freedom to concentrate on his game allows Cameron to perform at levels that will demand interest from the national selectors. Vale mencionar, também, que a vitória corintiana foi construída em uma das apostas de Fábio Carille. Ao optar por Sornoza em detrimento de Jadson, o treinador abriu mão de dinamismo no meio-campo para apostar em mais jogadas de bola parada.

Deu certo logo no começo da partida, quando o equatoriano cobrou falta na cabeça de Manoel, pronto para abrir o placar para o Corinthians na Arena. Sornoza teve boa atuação, com movimentação constante no meio-campo.

Zé Ricardo não é mais treinador do Botafogo. Após cair diante do Juventude, na noite desta quinta-feira, pela terceira fase da Copa do Brasil, o técnico não resistiu à pressão e foi demitido pela diretoria, que já costurava um acordo sem rusgas ainda em Caxias do Sul, nesta manhã.

O treinador estava no Alvinegro desde agosto do último ano, quando foi contratado para assumir o lugar deixado por Marcos Paquetá. Desde então, foram 41 jogos pelo Botafogo, com 17 vitórias no período, 11 empates e 13 derrotas (aproveitamento de 50,4%). O auxiliar de Zé, Cleber dos Santos, também foi desligado do clube.

Além da eliminação na Copa do Brasil, pesou muito a queda precoce do Botafogo no Campeonato Carioca, cuja campanha sequer fez a equipe comandada por Zé avançar a uma final de turno – nem mesmo do Carioca, via classificação geral.

Agora, em busca de um novo treinador, o Botafogo terá 15 dias até a estreia no Campeonato Brasileiro, que se dá no dia 27, contra o São Paulo, fora de casa. Há ainda os compromissos na Sul-Americana, na qual o Botafogo está classificado para a segunda fase.

The first of three ODIs, in what has been a marathon-run between these two teams, will be played in Cape Town with much less at stake than there was in the Twenty20 matches.The 2015 World Cup is further away than next year’s World T20, so this series will just be about the teams finding the right combination, something that is particularly important to the hosts. With veteran allrounder Jacques Kallis back in the mix, South Africa will work around him to assess what their squad may still need ahead of the big event.Pakistan, on the other had, may be looking only as far as ensuring their batting line-up finds the solidity it lacked in UAE. Their focus will be on preventing the collapses that have dogged them recently. They have never beaten South Africa in a bilateral ODI series, but will fancy taking an early lead this time, purely because of the timing of the first match.South Africa’s T20 captain, Faf du Plessis will be married on Saturday, and although he is not in the one-day squad, many of his team-mates who will be in attendance at the ceremony. AB de Villiers is the best man, but may have to leave early to take care of his duties as captain the next day. The current South African side has not let off-field events influence their cricket but they also haven’t had a wedding sandwiched between games.
