Faisalabad Wolves celebrate their title win•Pakistan Cricket Board

After posting 158, Faisalabad Wolves had one major aim in the chase – dismissing Shoaib Malik. They got him in time to restrict Sialkot Stallions in the chase and take the title in front of a full house at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. The Wolves won their previous national T20 title in 2005.Wolves, by winning the title, have also qualified for the Champions League Twenty20 this year, though that remains subject invitation by the tournament organisers. Teams from Pakistan were ignored for the first three editions of that competition, though the Stallions were invited last year. They failed to qualify for the main round.Wolves were off to a poor start after winning the toss, the openers back in the hut in the space of eight balls. However, they recovered, and recovered well. The defining feature of Wolves’ innings was the swift pace at which runs were scored. The first 50 runs came off 50 balls, second in 49 and the final 50 were knocked off in just 17 balls. Asif Ali was key, smashing 70 off 49 balls with nine boundaries, including three sixes. He first put together a 63-run third wicket stand with Khurram Shehzad (30) after the loss of two early wickets and then added an unbeaten 79 with captain Misbah-ul-Haq.Ali won six awards for his 70: most stylish player, most fours, most sixes, best scorer, and the Player of the Match while Ehsan Adil was named best bowler of the tournament. Misbah, who is currently enjoying the best run in his career, finished being a tournament top-scorer with 206 at a strike-rate of 140.13 and an average of 103, He’s also hit the most sixes this competition, 12. He played another assured hand in Wolves’ innings, smacking three sixes for his brisk 38 off 25 balls. The Stallions were reeling at 10 for 3 in the chase. Shakeel Ansar (4) was the first to go, top-edging a catch wicketkeeper Mohammad Salman.Stallions once again had to rely on Malik. Along with Ayaz Tasawwar (28 off 26), Malik added a steady 63 runs for the fifth wicket but the asking-rate was climbing with each over. The pair resisted Wolves for a while but Adil returned for his final spell to end the fightback. He first dismissed Tasawwar – who was caught at extra cover by Asif – and followed with a double-strike, getting rid of the brothers (Shoaib and Adeel) in quick succession.Malik finished the tournament as second-highest run-getter. His 40 off 39 balls included four fours and a six. After his departure, the rest of the batting couldn’t hold together. Malik failed to turn the tables this time and his side was bowled out for 122 in 19.1 overs.

A final fighting for relevance

The IPL final takes place in Kolkata on Sunday, but all the news surrounding the tournament is about events off the field

The Preview by George Binoy25-May-2013Match factsSunday, May 26
Start time 2000 (1430 GMT)Big PictureThe IPL final takes place in Kolkata on Sunday, but all the news surrounding the tournament is about events off the field. As Indian cricket and its fans grapple with the dismaying allegations of the past week, the old Apartheid-era slogan – No normal sport in an abnormal society – comes to mind. However, despite the formal charges of corruption against top Super Kings official Gurunath Meiyappan, the 2013 season will reach its scheduled end, when Chennai Super Kings play their fifth IPL final in six seasons, against Mumbai Indians at Eden Gardens. An assertion of the game being bigger than the individuals that comprise it, no matter how abnormal the environs.Super Kings have had an outstanding season, finishing top of the league with 11 wins out of 16 games, and blazed through the first qualifier to seal their finals berth. They are the only team to have won more games than they lost away from home this season; they have the tournament’s highest run-scorer and joint top wicket-taker. Their fielders have set standards not matched by most competitors. They have been the IPL’s most formidable franchise since its inception, and have the opportunity to enhance that reputation by winning a third title. To do that, however, not only do MS Dhoni’s men have to deal with, and overcome the turmoil caused by Meiyappan’s arrest, but they also have to deal with a tough opponent.Mumbai Indians. Their habit of buying the flavours of the season, and of tinkering constantly with their line-up, produced largely disappointing results in IPLs past. This season began the same way, but they took tough decisions – dropping Ricky Ponting and appointing Rohit Sharma as captain – and hit upon a balanced and successful combination earlier than usual. They delighted their home crowds by winning all eight matches at the Wankhede Stadium, but the final is at a neutral venue, and they lost five league games away from home. They are the best franchise to never win the IPL, but that accolade is a slight to the millions that have gone into making the team.Form guide(completed matches, most recent first)
Chennai Super Kings WLWLW
Mumbai Indians WLLWW
Watch out forThe Eden Gardens crowd. They are famously passionate. They’ve disrupted international matches because they were displeased, they’ve booed the Indian team because they felt Sourav Ganguly was ill-treated, and they’ve created the most electric atmospheres in famous Indian victories. How will they react to the allegations and charges of corruption in the IPL? Will they just not turn up? Will they arrive in tens of thousands and make their disappointment heard? Or will they remain indifferent and cheer as though nothing has happened?A clash of tactics. The Super Kings bat extremely deep, deeper than is really necessary in Twenty20cricket. Yet they prefer to bat watchfully for the first ten overs, before going mental in the next ten. The strategy may seem ridiculously conservative, but it rarely fails them. Their bowling attack is far from being the best in the league, but there is no obvious weak link, and they use the advantage of a usually daunting target to defend to tremendous effect. Mumbai Indians play to a different plan. Their batting order is short – it ends at No. 6. Only four of those are tested match-winners, compared to Super Kings’ seven, and Mumbai have relied on those four to get the job done. Their bowling attack, however, is power packed and should Mitchell Johnson, Lasith Malinga and Harbhajan Singh have good days, they could neutralise CSK’s guns.Team newsUnless Sachin Tendulkar has recovered from his arm injury, Mumbai have little reason to change the combination that beat Royals in the qualifier. Mumbai coach John Wright said Tendulkar was unlikely to play. Pragyan Ojha, however, could also be in doubt after the left-arm spinner hurt his shoulder while diving during the first innings on Friday and had to leave the field.Mumbai Indians: 1 Aditya Tare, 2 Dwayne Smith, 3 Dinesh Karthik (wk), 4 Rohit Sharma (capt), 5 Kieron Pollard, 6 Ambati Rayudu, 7 Harbhajan Singh, 8 Mitchell Johnson, 9 Rishi Dhawan, 10 Lasith Malinga, 11 Pragyan Ojha/Munaf Patel.Barring any last-minute fitness problems, the Super Kings should also field the same team that beat Mumbai in the first qualifier in Delhi.Chennai Super Kings: 1 M Vijay, 2 Michael Hussey, 3 Suresh Raina, 4 MS Dhoni (capt & wk), 5 S Badrinath, 6 Ravindra Jadeja, 7 Dwayne Bravo, 8 Albie Morkel, 9 Chris Morris, 10 R Ashwin, 11 Mohit Sharma.Pitch and conditionsContrary to the pitches used during the league stage at Eden Gardens, the surface for the qualifier between Mumbai and Rajasthan Royals was excellent for batting. And the outfield, despite it being damp from rain, was quick. The weather forecast for Kolkata on Sunday is predominantly cloudy with a chance of showers. It is unlikely that the weather will force a washout, though, and even if it does, there is a reserve day for the final on the following day.Stats and trivia The head-to-head record between the two teams this season is 2-1 in Mumbai’s favour. They won in Chennai and at the Wankhede, but lost the first qualifier in Delhi. Mumbai have an outstanding record at Eden Gardens, winning five out of the six games they’ve played there. Super Kings’ record isn’t shabby either, with four wins in five games. The Super Kings’ top order has a superb record in IPL finals: Suresh Raina averages 60 and strikes at 168, M Vijay averages 54 and strikes at 158, and Michael Hussey’s stats are 58.50 and 133.Mumbai have not had any stand-out batsmen against the Super Kings. Rohit Sharma has the best record – 248 runs at an average of 35 in eight innings. Lasith Malinga, however, has 19 wickets at an average of 18 and economy of 7.04 against the Super Kings.Quotes”The players and support staff are distressed by the allegations and news reports considering the CSK franchise, the IPL and Indian cricket. The players and the support staff have no knowledge of either the betting or the separate spot-fixing allegations. As difficult as it is, all our focus is on appearing in the final tomorrow.”
.”At this stage Sachin is probably a doubt for tomorrow. We will take a call tomorrow. He is still a big part of our team whether he plays or not. Aditya has done a great job. Sachin is a big part of Mumbai Indians. We play for people like Sachin. We are a family. It’s probably unlikely. We will take a final call tomorrow.”

Priyanjan, Perera tons lead Sri Lanka A to victory

Centuries from Ashan Priyanjan and Angelo Perera ensured Sri Lanka A beat Rest of Sri Lanka by 189 runs in Pallekele

Two dashing middle-order tons for Sri Lanka A ended Rest of Sri Lanka’s winning streak in the List A tournament in Pallekele, as the A team recorded a 139-run victory – their first in the tournament. Hundreds to Ashan Priyanjan and Angelo Perera propelled Sri Lanka A to 325 for 5 in their 50 overs, and Rest of Sri Lanka mustered only 186 all out in response, with none of their batsmen able to cross 50. Rest of Sri Lanka were missing their two best-performing bowlers in Rangana Herath and Nuwan Kulasekara, both of whom had been rested, and were also hamstrung by an injury to Chanaka Welegedara, who could only deliver 16 balls in the match.Rest of Sri Lanka began poorly, as they lost their first four wickets for 79 inside the first 20 overs, but were soon revived, then roaring, thanks to the 224-run partnership between Perera and Priyanjan. The pair began cautiously, as they worked to rebuild from the early losses, as Priyanjan took 24 deliveries to make his first 10 runs, and Perera struck significantly less than a run-a-ball for his first 30, but quickly accelerated after the 32nd over, at the end of which their side was at 122. The next 16.4 overs of their association was a blur of boundaries, with the 23-run slaughter of the 46th over – where Priyanjan hit a boundary off each of the five Chamara Kapugedara balls he faced – was a particular highlight. When Perera was adjudged lbw off Shaminda Eranga off the final over, the pair had bludgeoned 181 from the last 101 deliveries they had faced together. Priyanjan finished the innings with four consecutive fours off Dilruwan Perera, and remained unbeaten on 136 from 99 balls, having hit 15 fours and 5 sixes. This is Priyanjan’s maiden century in this format. Angelo Perera made 112 from 97.Rest of Sri Lanka could not achieve much traction in their run chase, as the top order stumbled, with only two of them reaching double figures. Though Kusal Mendis and Lahiru Thirimanne stood firm for a time, neither could manage the strike rate that would pose a serious challenge to the opposition’s total, and when their side crawled to 108 for 6 in the 27th over, the result was largely rendered a formality. Dilruwan Perera, Milinda Siriwardene and Shaminda Eranga hit late runs, but their side was bowled out in the 41st over. Offspinning allrounder Ramith Rambukwella was the best of Sri Lanka A’s bowlers, snaring three middle order wickets for 43 from his 7.5 overs.Sri Lanka A play Sri Lanka Combined on the 18th, in a match that will decide who will take on Rest of Sri Lanka in the final on Monday.

Lehmann's cultural remedy for Australia

Australia’s new coach Darren Lehmann has pushed enjoyment and a balanced perspective on life as part of his remedy for a team culture that has variously been described as toxic, insular, selfish, undisciplined, and just plain stupid

Australia’s new coach Darren Lehmann has pushed the importance of fun and a balanced perspective on life to remedy a team culture that has variously been described as toxic, insular, selfish, undisciplined, and just plain stupid. Lehmann has openly desired the national coaching job for quite some time, but given that it has fallen into his lap a mere two weeks before the first Investec Ashes Test, his initial message to the touring team could not afford to be elaborate.Upon the squad’s arrival in the medieval town centre of Taunton, Lehmann sat down his players and staff to set out a simple but clear direction for the Australian team, both on the field and off it. Relieving the tension of the past few days in Bristol and London was high on Lehmann’s list of priorities, while also ensuring focus shifted instantly to Wednesday’s tour match against Somerset.”Hopefully with the enjoyment factor, we’ll get that going for a start,” Lehmann said of the culture he wished to create. “When you start winning games you have a lot of fun so we need to start winning some games, simple as that. It’s about getting all the lads and everyone in a direction we want to go. We’re going one way and that is forward and everything starts afresh.”It’s about life as well, it’s a game of cricket. It’s important we have success and play well but it’s a small part of your life, so we’ve got to make sure we are helping them grow their lives on and off the ground, that is really important to me. Family is a big part of it, enjoying each other’s company while we’re away, and learning about ourselves and different cultures and different people we have in the team.”I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t a job I loved and wanted to do because I fell in love with coaching the first day I started with an IPL franchise. It just probably happened in different circumstances that it comes across my path right now.”That path will now include grappling with the various complications of mentoring a national team in 2013, including the influx of Twenty20 money that has muddled the priorities of numerous young players. The absolutes of Lehmann’s time, as a player who had to carve out nigh on 10,000 first-class runs before making his Test debut, have been replaced by greys like the lavish IPL money on offer to cricketers who have not yet grooved their games. When referring to numerous matters of club versus state versus country issues, Australia’s team performance manager Pat Howard remarked last summer that “no-one owns the players now”. Lehmann though spoke with typical confidence about sculpting the natural talent at his disposal into competitive, thoughtful and loyal cricketers.”The priority for us is Australia, that’s every player that is playing any form, their first right is with Australia,” Lehmann said. “We want to pick the best side each and every time and we’ll worry about the other franchises and issues as we go through.”We’re guided by CA and selectors along the way and that’s part and parcel of being a new-age cricketer. One thing I will say, they’re a lot better athletes that I was in my day and it’s just about teaching them and coaching them the best way to play the game in different situations.”Brad Haddin, Australia’s vice-captain, said Lehmann’s imprint on the team should soon be evident, starting with the respect he already engendered for his playing career and domestic coaching. “Darren’s got experience at all levels, as a player, a successful coach and a good person, and he’s known for that around Australian cricket and world cricket,” He said. “I think he’ll come into this environment comfortable with where he’s at and comfortable with where he wants to take the team.”
