Wolves receive update on Guedes

Journalist Pete O’Rourke has claimed that Wolves can succeed in their pursuit of Valencia forward Goncalo Guedes given their behind the scenes connections.

What’s the story?

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, O’Rourke said: “Obviously, the good connections might help facilitate this deal.

“With the player being Portuguese and the Jorge Mendes link, Bruno Lage will know all about Guedes from having seen him on several occasions and the Portuguese connections.”

Mendes is the agent of numerous figures at Molineux and has been a key factor in luring some of the Golden Boys’ top Portuguese talents.

The Telegraph reported earlier this week that Wolves will prioritise signing a striker this summer with interest in Guedes, who will no doubt be subject to interest from other potential suitors.

Therefore, the West Midlands club’s links off the pitch could give them a major advantage.

Wolves must sign Guedes

It’s no secret that it is an absolute must that Wolves add to their front line this summer with goals at a worryingly low output.

Only Watford and relegated Norwich City have scored fewer goals than Lage’s side’s 33 in 34 Premier League matches with their excellent defensive efforts the sole reason why they are still in the top half of the table.

Raul Jimenez hasn’t been his usual self this season having returned from a horrific skull fracture, scoring just six goals this season, although that does amount to a pretty sizeable 18% of Wolves’ league strikes.

The Mexican was in top form prior to his injury, scoring a whopping 27 goals in 55 matches, as well as ten assists, across all competitions in the 2019/20 campaign.

However, it appears as though former-player Diogo Jota still hasn’t been replaced, almost two years on since his move to Liverpool.

With 16 goals and six assists in 48 appearances, the 2019/20 season also saw the Portuguese forward bear fruit alongside Jimenez. He is certainly being missed, especially now the 25-year-old is excelling at Liverpool.

The Molineux outfit signed Hee-Chan Hwang from RB Leipzig last summer, with the South Korean able to play at striker, whilst Fabio Silva arrived in the same window that Jota left in.

Although, neither have reached similar standards set by the Portuguese, scoring five and zero goals respectively this season.

Guedes would certainly be a worthwhile addition and could be exactly what Wolves need to add goals to the side.

The 25-year-old, who can play at striker or on either flank, has netted 13 goals and registered six assists in 38 appearances this term, numbers that no Wolves player has gone close to this season.

Therefore, the Mendes client, labelled as a “special talent” by analytics site Breaking The Lines, could be the ideal partner for Jimenez and could also be the man to add goals to Lage’s side.

Pietersen a great team man – Flower

England’s coach, Andy Flower has hit back at suggestions that Kevin Pietersen is “an outcast” in the England team

England’s coach, Andy Flower has hit back at suggestions that Kevin Pietersen is “an outcast” in the England team, a choice of words used by Shane Warne in a newspaper interview on Monday, in which he blamed the selectors for sacking Pietersen as captain in January 2009 and in so doing damaging his previously impenetrable ego.”The way they have treated him is ordinary and he has been made to feel as if he is a bit of an outcast,” said Warne in the Courier-Mail. “KP might be the walking ego with the way he struts around, and sometimes he is unpopular with his own team-mates, and he can rub people up the wrong way. But he has to be made to feel important and like he is the man. If he feels like that, he will give you everything.”Flower gave Warne’s theory short shrift when informed of it during a press conference on Monday morning. “He’s anything but an outcast,” said Flower. “He’s a good guy to have around in the dressing room, a great player to have on your side, a very dangerous player that the opposition worries about. We expect great things from him and we expect him to take part in team dynamics like everyone else does, and that’s what he does.”In keeping with England’s languid approach to Thursday’s first Test at the Gabba, the squad marked their arrival in Brisbane with a day of sight-seeing, with Flower subscribing to the notion that working hard and playing hard is the best blend for creating a happy and dynamic team ethic. And as if to prove a point about Pietersen’s ability to mix it in a dressing-room environment, it was also confirmed that he will be joining Surrey for the 2011 season, having enjoyed a brief stint with them back in September following the severing of ties with his old club, Hampshire.”I think that we do have very good team unity,” said Flower. “Kevin does like the big stage, and I think that’s one of the great things about him as a competitive athlete, he enjoys the pressure situations, the chance to bat brilliantly while everyone’s watching, and that’s part of what makes up a very fine competitor.”Nevertheless, with the cauldron atmosphere of the “Gabbatoir” fast approaching, Pietersen remains the one England player who has yet to make a significant mark during England’s warm-up period, with a top score of 58 in four first-class innings at Perth, Adelaide and Hobart. What is more, his renowned weakness against left-arm spin was once again exposed in the final match against Australia A, when he was bowled for 5 by Steve O’Keefe – a dismissal that may well have influenced the selection of Xavier Doherty over Australia’s incumbent offspinner, Nathan Hauritz, for the first Test.Flower, however, isn’t convinced that such a tactic will pay off on the big day, and put the O’Keefe dismissal down to the bowler’s skill. “I thought he got quite a good ball the other day,” he said. “It drifted and just turned a bit at a reasonable pace. KP’s had a lot of success against left-arm spinners, and against Shane Warne who bowled with a similar trajectory, and I think he’s playing very well. He’s spent some time in the middle over the three first-class games, and though he missed out in Hobart, he’s feeling confident about his game and I expect him to do well. He’s in as good a nick as I could have hoped.”Despite the daunting reputation of the Gabba, a venue at which Australia haven’t lost a Test match in 22 years, Flower brushed aside the notion that the tone of the forthcoming series would be established from the very first ball – as was the case in 1994-95, when a Phil DeFreitas long-hop was carved for four by Michael Slater, and again in 2006-07, when Steve Harmison bowled his infamous wide to second slip.”We all realise the importance of setting the tone, but a five-Test series will not be won or lost over one ball,” he said. “We’ve played some good cricket recently and our guys think we can win this series. Whether or not we’re favourites is by the by, but any of the cricketers taking part in the middle will tell you that has nothing to do with facing up in that first hour or attacking with the new ball. We’re not overly concerned with that sort of judgment.”Australia have got an outstanding record here,” he conceded. “It’s going to be quite a record to turn over, but our side in the last 12-18 months has done a few good things, one of which was turning over that Lord’s record of not having beaten Australia there for 75 years. This is the challenge put in front of us, and we’re looking forward to it.”As for the overall importance of the Ashes, Flower was careful not to overstate their value, just as was the case in 2009 when England’s celebrations involved a low-key night on the tiles and an early flight to Belfast for a one-day game. Such a dismissive attitude to a triumph of that magnitude did raise a few eyebrows, not least from the team itself, but the approach was justified in hindsight, as England went on to build on their performance in a manner they were unable to do in 2005.”The Ashes is an important series, obviously, and the whole history of the competition is interesting, and it’s a real honour for everyone in our squad to be involved in it,” he said. “But we have ambitions to be the No.1 side in the world, and the Ashes being an important series in its own right is an important step along the way.”

A disputa deve ficar aberta novamente.

Newcastle: Kennedy hails Anderson’s heroics

Liam Kennedy has given his instant reaction after Newcastle United youngster Elliot Anderson fired Bristol Rovers to promotion to League One on Saturday.

The lowdown: Seventh heaven for Bristol Rovers

Needing to better the result of third-placed Northampton Town or win by a seemingly unlikely five goals more than their rivals, Joey Barton’s side pulled off a miracle second-half display against Scunthorpe.

With five minutes remaining, the Gas were chasing the crucial seventh goal when Anderson headed home to spark wild celebrations at the Memorial Ground, their 7-0 victory enabling them to nudge ahead of the Cobblers, who won 3-1 at Barrow, by virtue of goals scored in the table.

Having joined on January’s transfer deadline day on a six-month loan deal, the young winger has enjoyed a stellar spell, and one invested onlooker believes than an exciting future awaits…

The latest: ‘Special’ Anderson

Taking to Twitter, Shields Gazette journalist Kennedy hailed the 19-year-old in response to a post congratulating the starlet from Newcastle’s official channel.

The reporter succinctly said of Anderson: “He’s rather special… #NUFC”

The 19-year-old is expected to return to St James’ Park ahead of the 2022/23 season following promotion without the need for play-offs.

The latest: Ready for the big time?

Since joining the Pirates in mid-season, Anderson has scored eight times and provided five assists whilst gaining some invaluable first-team match experience in the process.

Prior to leaving the northeast, the Scotland youth international had lit up Premier League 2 with five goals in just seven appearances, impressing Newcastle assistant coach Jason Tindall, who described Anderson as a ‘bright talent’ based on what he had witnessed at Darsley Park.

Named the League Two Player of the Month for April, the attacking midfielder has earned a staggering 7.23 average Sofascore rating including 3.5 shots, two successful dribbles and eight duels won on average per game during his time at Bristol Rovers, and he now appears ready to make an impact for the Magpies.

Hopes stars as Queensland rout Tasmania

The horrific Queensland weather held off long enough to allow the Bulls to dismantle Tasmania to post their first victory of this year’s Big Bash

The Bulletin by Alex Malcolm 07-Jan-2011Queensland 2 for 119 (Hopes 65*, Carseldine 28*) beat Tasmania 8 for 118 (Bailey 37, Rimmington 2-23) by 8 wickets

The horrific Queensland weather held off long enough to allow the Bulls to dismantle Tasmania to post their first victory of this year’s Big Bash.Gabba curator Kevin Mitchell Jr conjured a miracle to prepare a playable surface given the apocalyptic rains that have drowned the state over the past three weeks.James Hopes won the toss and sent Tasmania in. It proved to be the correct decision as the hosts bowled and fielded superbly right through the Tasmania innings to restrict them to a below-par 8 for 118 from their 20 overs. The visitors were on the back foot when they lost newly named Australia Twenty20 vice-captain Tim Paine, who played on for 3 in the third over, with just 11 runs on the board. The Tigers also contributed to their own downfall with two needless run-outs. Mark Cosgrove miscalculated while attempting two to Michael Neser running in from deep square leg. An outstanding direct hit found Cosgrove miles short. Then Travis Birt committed cricketing suicide in the next over calling George Bailey through for a single when his captain had merely defended back to the bowler.Bailey tried to mount a rescue mission, top scoring with 37 from 30 balls, including two sixes. He and James Faulkner (24) put on 41 for the seventh wicket to take Tasmania past 100. But Bailey was undone by a clever slower ball from Nathan Rimmington, who bowled brilliantly to finish with 2 for 23, including the wicket of Faulker. The Bulls had one eye on the weather in their chase as opener Chris Simpson got them off to rapid start, clubbing 20 from 11 balls after Michael Lumb fell early. However, he failed to capitalise on his start, as he was bowled by Xavier Doherty in the third over to leave the Bulls at 2 for 25. But Hopes (65 not out) and Lee Carseldine (28 not out) dashed any hopes that Tasmania might have had of a Queensland collapse. They smashed 94 runs off 68 balls to make a mockery of the Tasmanian attack and reach the target with 37 balls to spare. In one stretch of eight deliveries, the experience pair thumped six fours and a six between them.Hopes, who also affected a run-out and took a one-handed catch to dismiss Ryan ten Doeschate, was declared the Man-of-the-Match.Queensland move level with Tasmania on the table with the four other sides playing their second matches across the weekend.

Canada ready for Caribbean T20

After spending December trapped in by snow and bad weather, Pubudu Dassanayake, the Canada coach, is thrilled that his team are playing in the Caribbean Twenty20 tournament just prior to the World Cup.Canada completed a training camp on Wednesday and will play the tournament, which will be between January 10 and 23. With the World Cup just over a month away Dassanayake is thankful that the team will get some valuable match practice.”When I thought about it, here [in Toronto], there’s snow and you have to be indoors, and, if you go to the Caribbean, you’re going to face all the top quality bowlers, you’re going to play on good grounds and facilities,” Dassanayake told CBC.ca.Ravin Moorthy, Canada’s high performance manager, echoed the sentiment and reassured that the change in format won’t affect his side’s preparations. “It’s a slightly different format than what we’ll face in the World Cup [with its 50 overs], but it’s an opportunity to play against good quality cricketers in a well-organised tournament with good facilities,” said Moorthy.”It’s a good opportunity for guys to get outside, play some cricket outdoors and dust off some of the cobwebs.”Canada are in Group B at the Caribbean T20, along with Barbados, Hampshire Royals, Leeward Islands and Trinidad and Tobago and play their opening game against Hampshire on January 11.”What we want to achieve, of course, is to win,” Dassanayake said. “But at the same time, it’s all about going with the same plans we’re going to have in the World Cup. Having the same batting order, trying to improve our fielding as a group and the variations of how we use our bowlers, is all of the stuff we’re going to work on this tour as a preparation towards the World Cup.”Moorthy felt being together for nearly a year has done the team plenty of good and he hopes they will be ready to play their best cricket by the time the World Cup comes around. “At this stage, it’s not so much technical remediation; it’s learning how to bring your best performance onto the top stage.”It has not all been plain sailing however, with Canada’s all-time leading run scorer John Davison deciding last month to withdraw from the squad until further explanation was given for the omission of batsmen Geoff Barnett and Ian Billcliff from the World Cup squad. The turmoil is sure to have rocked the camp but Moorthy is confident the bond between the team is strong enough to overcome the loss and Dassanayake backed the youngsters to make up for Davison’s absence.”It’s a group that has very little challenges as everybody seems to enjoy each other’s company so, from that perspective, it’s a pleasure to be a part of,” said Moorthy. “Everybody’s on the same page and everyone is really focused towards doing something.”The youngsters that we have, especially Nitish Kumar, Hiral Patel, Ruvindu Gunasekera and Parth Desai, have the talent to be at that level,” Dassanayake said. “Even though they’re young, you can see that these guys came a long way and they do things like senior players. I’m expecting them to perform in the World Cup and put on a good show.”
