Wolves still keen on signing Joao Palhinha

Wolverhampton Wanderers are still interested in Sporting Lisbon midfielder Joao Palhinha, but  they could find it tricky to complete a deal for him this month.

What’s the story?

Speaking to GiveMeSport, journalist Peter O’Rourke said: “Palhinha has been a long-term target for Wolves, and some of the signs we’re getting from Sporting Lisbon is that they would consider selling him before Monday’s deadline.

“£25 million has been mentioned, I think that will put him out of Wolves’ price range right now, and I think there are other bigger clubs also looking at the Portuguese international as well.”

The midfielder is contracted to the Portuguese champions until summer 2026 and has been a regular for Sporting this season, making 26 appearances so far in all competitions.

Moreover, according to Portuguese newspaper Record (as relayed by Sport Witness), there are numerous other clubs interested in the 26-year-old, with Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Atletico Madrid and Sevilla all named as potential suitors.

Lage will be seething

Wolves manager Bruno Lage will likely be hoping to add to his squad before Monday’s deadline as he looks to secure a top-six finish in his first season in charge at Molineux.

The Portuguese influence at the West Midlands club over recent years has been well documented, which makes the interest in Palhinha particularly understandable. However, the midfielder would prove to be a solid option and a long-term suitor to Old Gold regular Joao Moutinho, who is now 35.

With midfielders Ruben Neves and Moutinho both playing regularly and enjoying impressive campaigns thus far, it could be argued that Palhinha wouldn’t instantly get in the Wolves team if he moves to the Black Country. The support he could provide over the coming seasons would be invaluable, though.

The 12-cap Portugal international is known to be defensive-minded and has even played at centre-back, making Wolves seem an even more perfect fit for him. Lage’s side have the Premier League’s second-best defence, having conceded just 16 goals in 21 games.

It would certainly be a blow for the Wolves manager if he is unable to bring his fellow countryman to Molineux this month. What would make it even worse is if Sporting opted to sell the midfielder to a Premier League rival – that would well and truly have Lage absolutely seething, given how good a fit Palhinha appears to be for the Old Gold.

Luiz Gomes: 'O dia do Fico.

Andy Flower wary of 'pigeonholing' Eoin Morgan

Andy Flower is keen to prevent Eoin Morgan from being stereotyped as a limited-overs player

England batsman Eoin Morgan has been in sparkling form so far in the ICC World Twenty20 but coach, Andy Flower, is keen to prevent him from being stereotyped as a limited-overs player. “I have said before I wouldn’t want to pigeonhole the guy because there are all sorts of things he could achieve in his career and he has only just started it,” Flower told reporters in Barbados. “Whether he goes on to play Test cricket or not we don’t know, but he’s obviously a guy who is good at handling pressure, has got a good brain on him and he’s very talented.”After a poor run of form for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL (an average of 11.66 in four games with a top score of 17), Morgan has bounced back in the World Twenty20, top-scoring with 55 off 35 balls against the West Indies before rescuing England with an assured 45 from 37 balls against Ireland. His average in the shortest version of the game now stands at 55.40 against 36.54 in first-class cricket.”He is an interesting character.” Flower said. “He brings a lot to our changing room; he obviously brings a lot to our side when he has got the bat in his hand.”A lot of his practice time is based on doing the basics really well. Obviously, he has practised his innovations and he’s comfortable doing them, but one of the strengths of those innovations is that he is unpredictable.”Ireland’s captain, William Porterfield, is convinced Morgan – whom he captained before Morgan decided to play for England – has what it takes to succeed at the longest version of game. “He has the ability to do it against the best and I think he can definitely go and play Test cricket. He has the ability and mentality, he can switch from one form to the other; he’s going to go places.”

Newcastle transfer news on Ekitike

Craig Hope has now revealed some worrying Newcastle United transfer news on Hugo Ekitike.

The Lowdown: Breakthrough this morning…

The Daily Telegraph journalist Luke Edwards reported earlier this morning that the St. James’ Park faithful are now ‘closing in’ on a deal to try and sign Ekitike before the deadline, claiming that it ‘could go through today’.

However, as the clock ticks by, and with focus on getting Dan Burn through his medical ahead of his proposed move from Brighton and Hove Albion, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) consortium need to make sure that there are not any slip-ups with Ekitike.

The Latest: Doubts?

As per The Daily Mail journalist Hope, sources from France are now saying that Ekitike ‘needs convincing’ before making the move to the North East:

“Update: Newcastle talks with Reims striker Hugo Ekitike are ongoing.

“Sources in France say player needs convincing the move is right for him. Time ticking on this one.”

The Verdict: Worrying

The fact that Ekitike is yet to be convinced by a move to Tyneside is certainly worrying with the clock ticking by, as they will need enough time for him to complete a medical and all of the necessary paperwork in case he gives the move the green light.

Eddie Nketiah from Arsenal has been mentioned as another potential option in the striker department, but any quick deal looks increasingly unlikely as the hours go by, with Edwards even going as far as to claim that there is ‘no chance’ that it will happen.

Thus, the Magpies need to make sure that the Ekitike deal does not fall through – perhaps the ambition shown by the other signings in the works could convince him to join before the deadline.

Resolve damaging allegations, urges Afridi

Shahid Afridi has urged authorities to resolve the allegations surrounding the team because the uncertainty was “damaging for the players”

Shahid Afridi, Pakistan’s Twenty20 captain, has urged the authorities to resolve the allegations surrounding the team as soon as possible because the uncertainty was “damaging for the players and the team” as they prepare for future assignments, especially the 2011 World Cup.”The thing is that there is too much uncertainty because of all those allegations,” Afridi told the . “It’s really damaging for the players and the team and I’m really concerned because it comes at a time when we are looking forward to a very busy calendar filled with major assignments, including the all-important World Cup.”I think that for our team to move on, we need to quickly resolve all such controversies. You can’t expect the players to give their best when there are so many allegations thrown at them.”The ICC’s Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU) said on Thursday that it was investigating Pakistan’s tour of Australia in 2009-10 to establish whether Pakistan’s on-field failure was the result of what it called a “dysfunctional” team or “something more serious”.The PCB has been conducting its own investigations into the Australia tour and a leaked video recording of the committee’s hearings revealed the level of in-fighting and disunity within the Pakistan side. Senior members of Pakistan’s team management on the tour raised concerns about a run-out wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal fluffed during the second Test in Sydney, hinting that it may have been more than just a cricketing error. When Afridi was asked at the inquiry if the losses to Australia were deliberate, he said: “I have heard from others that such things [deliberately losing] exist but I do not know of any such player myself.”Pakistan’s next assignment is the Asia Cup in June and Afridi said it “would be great if the team goes to Sri Lanka with this issue resolved so that everybody can focus on playing cricket.” Pakistan have not yet announced an ODI captain but it is widely expected that the responsibility will be given to Afridi.

Leeds receive major Adam Forshaw boost

Leeds United midfielder Adam Forshaw is expected to return from injury for the Whites’ Premier League clash with Aston Villa next week.

The Lowdown: Forshaw absent again

The 30-year-old missed almost two years of action with a serious hip injury, having been a key figure during Leeds’ Championship days.

Forshaw made a triumphant return to action earlier this season, however, and he has started ten Premier League matches in 2021/22 to date.

Unfortunately, the midfielder has again been sidelined with a hamstring issue in recent weeks, but his return now appears to be imminent.

[freshpress-quiz id=“383507″]

The Latest: Back in time for Villa

According to the Yorkshire Evening Post, Forshaw is expected to be back in contention to start next Wednesday’s taxing-looking trip to Villa Park.

Leeds go into the game sitting 15th in the table and just seven points clear of the relegation zone.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-33/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Huge boost for Leeds

This is a massive boost for Leeds at a time when Kalvin Phillips is also missing with a hamstring injury of his own, therefore making Forshaw even more important.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side will come up against a strong Villa midfield featuring the likes of Douglas Luiz, John McGinn and Jacob Ramsey, so the returning Forshaw will need to be at his best.

He has won an average of 2.3 tackles per game in the league this season, which is only bettered by McGinn (2.9) in Villa’s midfield, suggesting he will be a good match for his opponents when the challenges start flying in.

In other news, Leeds are still thought to be plotting a deal for one player. Find out who it is here.
