Barath hopes for shot at Australia

The West Indians will be able to forget their off-field worries when they open their tour with a four-day match against Queensland

The West Indians will be able to forget their off-field worries when they open their tour with a four-day match against Queensland on Wednesday. The side has not played since the end of their costly player strike and has since been written off by the former coach John Dyson ahead of the three-Test series starting in Brisbane next week. One of the new faces expected to be on show at Allan Border Field is Adrian Barath, an uncapped 19-year-old opener who stands at 5ft 4in. Barath is likely to open with Chris Gayle in what is effectively a trial for the opening Test at the Gabba on November 26.Barath is from Trindad and Tobago and was part of that team’s strong showing in the Champions League Twenty20, but he will have to lift his standards to cope against the Australians. In 22 first-class matches he averages 46.05 and has scored five centuries, including one for West Indies A against England in January.”I’m confident, I have worked hard and I’m prepared,” he said. “I performed well in the Champions League in India for Trinidad and Tobago and I’m looking to continue. All I want is the opportunity to get out there and show what I am made of.”I am a player who can adapt to foreign conditions. I will play it as I see it.” David Williams, the coach, wants to pick a full-strength line-up to allow his main men to settle ahead of the first Test.West Indies squad Chris Gayle (capt), Adrian Barath, Sulieman Benn, Dwayne Bravo, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Narsingh Deonarine, Travis Dowlin, Brendan Nash, Denesh Ramdin (wk), Ravi Rampaul, Kemar Roach, Darren Sammy, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Jerome Taylor, Gavin Tonge.Queensland Ryan Broad, Nick Kruger, Lee Carseldine, Wade Townsend, Chris Simpson (capt), Nathan Reardon, Chris Hartley (wk), Daniel Doran, Alister McDermott, Nathan Rimmington, Luke Feldman, Scott Walter (12th man).

Lonwijk is impressing for Fortuna Sittard

With the January transfer window fast appoaching, Bruno Lage and Jeff Shi will be starting to consider players who they could look to bring into Wolverhampton Wanderers in order to give the club the best possible chance of securing a top-half finish in the Premier League this season.

One such position will almost certainly be centre-back, with summer signing Yerson Mosquera being ruled out of action until at least February as a result of a hamstring injury, and both Willy Boly and Romain Saiss more than likely being unavailable for selection in January due to their potential involvement in the Africa Cup of Nations.

As such, Lage could well be left with just Conor Coady and Max Kilman as senior options for his three-man defence, something that would undoubtedly be a disaster for the 45-year-old manager.

However, before dipping into the transfer market, perhaps Lage and Shi should consider an option much closer to home – figurative speaking, at least – in the shape of Nigel Lonwijk.

Lonwijk could save Wolves millions

Having joined Wolves from PSV Eindhoven back in January of 2020, there was a considerable amount of hype about the 19-year-old centre-back, with Shi himself stating of the youngster’s signing: “To be able to get somebody of Nigel’s quality across the line was really pleasing and we’re delighted with the signing.

“He’s very good physically, a good defender one-v-one, and has strong technical ability, so we very much see him fitting into how our system as an outside centre-back. He’s got good physicality as well, so ticks the boxes in many of the things we’re looking for in terms of our centre-back positions.”

However, while it is not particularly unusual for a teenager making a move to England from another country, the £90k-rated defender is still yet to make a first-team appearance for the club, being sent on loan to Eredivisie side Fortuna Sittard for the 2021/22 campaign in order to continue his development in senior football.

And, if the 19-year-old’s most recent performance against PEC Zwolle is anything to go by, it would very much appear as if the youngster would make an extremely useful addition to Lage’s current options in the heart of his Wolves defence this winter.

Indeed, over the course of his 90 minutes on the pitch, the former Netherlands U16 international made a whopping 14 clearances, two interceptions, one tackle and won an incredible 11 of his 15 attempted duels.

Aside from this defensive masterclass, the 6 foot 3 centre-back also scored the match-winning goal for Fortuna, while his overall display saw him earn a SofaScore match rating of 8.3 – the highest of any player to feature in the fixture.

As such, with it being clear for all to see that Wolves are in desperate need of defensive reinforcements this January, bringing Lonwijk back to Molineux would very much look to be a smart move by both Lage and Shi, as, should the defender indeed impress when given a chance in the first-team, he could well go on to save Fosun millions of pounds in transfer fees this winter.

Gabba defeat a 'disaster', says Chris Gayle

The term was appropriate after his side was bundled out for 228 and 187 on Saturday to tumble to an innings-and-65-run defeat

Chris Gayle doesn’t waste energy or words and was quick to call West Indies’ three-day defeat at the Gabba a “disaster”. The term was appropriate after his side was bundled out for 228 and 187 on Saturday to tumble to an innings-and-65-run embarrassment that gave Australia a 1-0 lead in the three-Test series.”It’s a must-turnaround situation that we’re in,” Gayle said. “Two matches to go, so hopefully we can rebound from this disaster, this loss in three days. We have to look for positives.”Adrian Barath’s hundred stood miles ahead, Travis Dowlin’s first-innings 62 was useful and Denesh Ramdin had a strong game with bat and gloves, but there was little else to encourage the tourists. Fifteen wickets fell on the third day as the game was handed over due to Australia’s varied attack and some poor shot selection.”I’m very disappointed at the batting in both innings, they didn’t come off,” Gayle said. “Apart from Adrian and his second-innings century, a brilliant innings, he batted well and showed a lot of character.”Despite the struggles of this game and the bitter players’ strike, Gayle has no plans to seek an easy way out of his captaincy. He showed his belief in the team and Test cricket by flying back from Jamaica, where he visited his sick mother, in time for the match, but after the contest finished it was hard to tell whether he was still suffering from jet-lag or in despair at the defeat.”The captain don’t want to lose,” he said. “You have to be strong in this situation, have to be a strong individual. Try and uplift the players and encourage them and lift your game as well. It’s a tough situation and I’ve been around a long time as well to handle this situation. I’m not thinking down that path [of stepping down] at this point of time.”Ricky Ponting will hold his assessment of West Indies until after Adelaide following another win on a ground where Australia haven’t lost since 1988-89. “There is no team that comes here and performs well, simple as that,” he said. “It’s 21 years since we’ve lost a game here. And they’re not at full strength.”The pitch was excellent for the run-makers if they could cope with the bounce, but the visitors struggled, feeding the slips with catches as well as making bad mistakes, such as Dwayne Bravo’s hooking of Michael Hussey to the only man in the deep. “We have ourselves to blame,” Gayle said, “so go back to the nets and rebuild for the second Test.” That game starts on Friday and the extra time may help Jerome Taylor to recover from a back strain that limited him to nine overs on the first day.Taylor has had a scan and Gayle said they would wait on him and Ramnaresh Sarwan, who suffered a back injury at training the day before the game. “Keep our fingers crossed, hopefully [Sarwan] will be ready for the second Test,” he said. “We’ll have to wait and see.”

O'Brien and openers lift New Zealand

It was a flat track in Napier but Iain O’Brien was on a mission to make his last Test memorable and Pakistan’s top order was in a self-destructive mood

Don’t be fooled by the score. It was a flat track in Napier but Iain O’Brien was on a mission to make his last Test memorable and Pakistan’s top order, as ever, was in a self-destructive mood. Imran Farhat lifted Pakistan from the depths of 59 for 5 and resuscitated his career with a fighting century but New Zealand will be more than pleased with their efforts, especially after a dogged batting display from the openers, on the first day of the final Test.Until Farhat produced his hundred it was all O’Brien. At one point his figures read: 4.2-4-3-3. He was hostile throughout his spell, consistently bowling over 140 kmph, and was always accurate but, even so, it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that even he would have been slightly surprised by the results. On a flat pitch, Pakistan’s top order contrived to implode yet again by playing poor cricket. Only one batsman, Misbah-ul-Haq, was taken out by a difficult delivery; the rest were simply not good enough. Tim Southee claimed the initial breakthrough when Salman Butt left a gaping gap between bat and pad to lose his middle stump, after which O’Brien took over. And how.O’Brien sussed out quickly that Faisal Iqbal was a sitting target because of his awkward feet movement and aimed one at his throat, forcing an ugly fend to the slip cordon. He tied up Yousuf with his disciplined lines and lengths before hurling one short of a length outside off stump. Yousuf thought it would be the ideal chance to break the shackles but was done in by the extra bounce and edged it to second slip.It was the recurring theme of a bizarre morning. O’Brien tied up edgy batsmen with his discipline before delivering the knock-out blow with some thing extra. Misbah got a gem early in his innings: The ball held its line outside off and Misbah couldn’t help edging it behind.Pakistan’s debacle was exemplified by Umar Akmal’s dismissal. It was a short-of-length delivery that straightened well outside off stump. It could have been left alone or cut to the point boundary but Umar, the best of the Pakistan batsman in this series, just hung his bat out and guided it straight to gully.Fortunately for Pakistan, though, Farhat couldn’t have chosen a better moment to resuscitate his career. It would be churlish to dismiss Farhat’s effort as streaky, though there were several play and misses and a couple of curious slogs which would have raised blood-pressure levels in the dressing room, but that’s how he seems to play. There were spurts where Farhat seemed to lose concentration and went for pressure-reliving big hits and there were phases where he looked to be in control. Or something resembling it at least. The fact that the last century by a Pakistan opener outside the subcontinent was Salman Butt’s effort in Sydney way back in 2005 would make fans overlook Farhat’s iffy patches and remember the good things from the knock. Amid nervous slashes, Farhat played a couple of off drives – the one in the seventh over against Chris Martin being the shot of the day – and a few well-timed cover drives. There was a flamboyant square drive too, on a bent knee for added effect, a crunchy pull shot and he definitely got better in the second session, during which he seemed surer of where his off stump was. He grew increasingly bolder and played big shots against Daniel Vettori to reach his hundred. Farhat found support in Mohammad Aamer in the afternoon and proceeded to lead Pakistan out of shambles.Farhat’s knock, and perhaps more importantly Aamer’s defiance, revealed two truths: The pitch was a true, firm surface that did offer bounce but not much movement, and the other Pakistan batsmen didn’t apply themselves. Luckily for them, Farhat refused to fade away without a fight. He added 69 runs with Aamer and 35 with Umar Gul before Daryl Tuffey hastened the end with a triple strike post tea. Tuffey terminated Gul’s defiance and removed Mohammad Asif for a first-ball duck before he took out the enterprising Danish Kaneria. However, till Farhat did his thing, it was O’Brien who owned the morning and Ian Smith was moved enough to say on air: “Someone offer his wife a job here … we don’t wanna miss this fella!”The icing on the cake for New Zealand was the performance from their openers; McIntosh, who has been lbw a few times in this series, took care not to get the front leg in line and BJ Watling didn’t embarrass himself on debut. Their 47-run opening stand, the best for New Zealand in the series, capped a near-perfect day for the hosts.

AVFC must secure Aribo transfer

With four wins out of a possible six under his belt, Steven Gerrard has got his reign in charge of Aston Villa off to a good start following the run of five defeats that led to Dean Smith getting sacked from the Midlands club.

Now that the January transfer window is very close to opening, Gerrard has the chance to make some changes to the squad at Villa Park that he feels would be beneficial for the team and club going forward, whether that be signing new players or getting rid of current ones.

In terms of who the former Rangers manager could bring to Villa next month, one figure who he’s very familiar with that could be a good fit for his squad moving forward is Rangers midfielder Joe Aribo, who Gerrard has been tipped to make a potential swoop for by former Villa midfielder Ray Houghton.

Since joining the Scottish club on a free transfer from Charlton Athletic back in the 2019 summer transfer window, the 25-year-old has gone on to make a total of 122 appearances for Rangers across all competitions in which he has managed to score 23 goals and provide 19 assists along the way.

In the past, Aribo revealed that he has been compared to the likes of Yaya Toure and Patrick Vieira in terms of how he plays on the pitch, which should be an exciting prospect for the Villa fans to have someone like that in their squad that has been likened to two of the Premier League’s most coveted midfielders.

With current Villa midfielder, Marvelous Nakamba set for a significant spell on the sidelines through injury, this could pave the way for Aribo to join the Villa midfield in a more attacking role if Gerrard gives either Douglas Luiz or John McGinn the responsibility to sit a bit further back in a more defensive role that Nakamba usually has.

Looking ahead to January, Villa should do all they can to sign Aribo, who has been labelled as a “dynamic” player by Rangers manager Giovanni Van Bronckhorst and add him to their squad.

However, with the midfield maestro, who is currently earning a weekly wage of £14k-per-week according to Salary Sport, having appeared in all but one of Rangers’ games across all competitions so far this season, it could be quite hard to get the club to let him go given how important he seemingly is for them.
