Cricinfo staff25-Aug-2009The England allrounder Andrew Flintoff has undergone surgery to his injured right knee and is expected to be on crutches for a minimum of six weeks.Flintoff, who retired from Test cricket after England’s victorious Ashes campaign which culminated in a 197-run win over Australia at The Oval, underwent a routine arthroscopy and micro-fracture to two small areas in his right knee last night. The recovery period is expected to be lengthy. Prior to the operation, Flintoff identified England’s one-day series against Bangladesh next February as a realistic goal to recover from this latest surgery. And despite this latest setback, he remains determined to become the best one-day cricketer in the world.”The recovery will require him to be non weight-bearing for the first six to eight weeks post surgery,” the ECB said. “At the end of this six-to-eight-week period, the knee will be reviewed by his surgeon and the timescale for ongoing rehabilitation further determined.”Flintoff ended his Test career by helping England beat Australia in the fifth and final Test, clinching the series 2-1 and regaining the Ashes.

Rangers: Van Bronckhorst deadline set

A deadline has been set for Giovanni van Bronckhorst in Rangers’ search for a new head coach this week…

What’s the talk?

According to the Scottish Sun, the Dutchman will be told within the next 24 hours whether or not he has landed the job to succeed Steven Gerrard at Ibrox.

The report claims the second round of talks with him concluded on Tuesday in the Netherlands and the 46-year-old will know Ross Wilson’s final decision by Thursday.

Excitement

This update will surely leave fans feeling excited as it suggests that they will know who the new manager of the club is before the weekend. Van Bronckhorst will know at some point on Thursday and consequently, that will result in a deal being done before Sunday’s League Cup clash with Hibernian, per the report.

Once that is finalised the fans can start to look forward to a brand new era at Ibrox with a fresh head coach leading the way forwards, so they can forget about the ex-Liverpool man and focus on the future rather than looking back at what could have been.

Rangers are currently top of the Scottish Premiership, four points clear of Celtic, and fans should get excited about the prospect of a former player coming and leading them to glory. Gerrard has left the club in a superb position for someone to take over the reins and continue their assault on the division for the rest of the campaign, with the ex-Feyenoord coach seemingly set for the role.

Van Bronckhorst has an eye-catching C.V as a manager despite starting his senior coaching career in 2015. He spent four years with Feyenoord in the Netherlands and was hugely successful as he won five trophies in those four seasons and won one Eredivisie title.

This shows that he is capable of setting his side up to win trophies and that will no doubt excite supporters, especially with a semi-final coming up this weekend against Hibs. Gerrard never won a domestic cup during his time in Glasgow and van Bronckhorst may have an opportunity to reach a final in his first game in charge. Should that be the case, then the Ibrox fanbase will be elated by the events of the last week.

Pakistan allrounder Shahid Afridi has turned down an offer to represent Tasmania this season because he wants to focus on his team’s forthcoming tour of Australia.”Russel Arnold [the former Sri Lankan player] spoke to me about the possibility of playing for Tasmania but I declined as Pakistan are already due to tour Australia in December,” Afridi told PTI.”I am keen on the tour of Australia and want to perform there for the team because when you perform in Australia, your ranking as a player always goes up.”Pakistan are due to tour Australia for three Tests, five ODIs and a Twenty20 between December 26 and February 5. There’s also an unconfirmed tour of New Zealand between the Champions Trophy in September and the Australia tour.Afridi said he had received feedback on playing in Australia from his team-mates, Younis Khan and Umar Gul, who took part in domestic tournaments last season. Younis represented South Australia and Gul Western Australia.”I have learnt a lot from them about the Australian conditions and their domestic set-up. So I was not pushed to sign up for any state side,” Afridi said.He also praised Younis’ captaincy and his ability to make every player feel part of the team. “Younis is like an older brother to me and a lot of the younger players,” Afridi said during a charity event in Manchester. “It doesn’t make any difference to him whether a player is Punjabi, from Karachi, Pathan or whatever else, he treats everyone the same and really looks after all of us.”Younis has a lot of respect for all the guys in the team, whether you are a senior player or new to international cricket. This makes everyone feel welcome and part of the setup and not an outsider and has really made us gel as a team.”

Philogene-Bidace can save Villa millions

With Steven Gerrard’s reign as Aston Villa manager getting off to a perfect start in the shape of a 2-0 win last weekend, there is an unavoidable feel-good factor surrounding Villa Park at present.

Indeed, Villa are now being linked with a host of exciting players in the January transfer window, something which is seemingly a direct result of Gerrard’s appointment at the club, while the 41-year-old’s history of success with Rangers – leading the Ibrox side to their first Scottish Premiership title in a decade – also appears to bode well for the future of the manager’s new club.

On top of all of this, Aston Villa are currently enjoying the emergence of a number of incredibly exciting youth prospects, with the likes of 20-year-old Jacob Ramsey, 19-year-old Cameron Archer and 18-year-old Carney Chukwuemeka having all broken into the first-team this season.

However, it is perhaps 19-year-old Jaden Philogene-Bidace who is the most promising of all Villa’s young talents, with the winger appearing to boast the potential to flourish into a top-draw talent under the leadership of Gerrard.

Philogene-Bidace could save Villa millions

Having made the move to Aston Villa back in the summer of 2018, Philogene-Bidace has enjoyed a rather remarkable rise to the first team, continuously impressing during his time with the various age groups at Bodymoor Heath.

Indeed, over his 15 appearances for the U18s, the left-winger scored a rather remarkable nine goals and registered one assist, before being promoted to the club’s U23 side, for whom he has bagged an even more impressive 13 goals and four assists over 26 fixtures.

While these rapid returns may well have surprised many at Villa, one person who was certainly not shocked by Philogene-Bidace’s rise is Pro:Direct academy manager Danny Payne, the man who brought the teenager to the Pro:Direct academy after unsuccessful spells with clubs such as Arsenal, West Ham, Brentford and Norwich City.

Speaking of the forward’s potential, Payne said: “Without doubt he was one of the most talented players we have ever had in our academy. He had a natural talent in possession and he had a great ability to get past players and beat them. He had an ability to create chances which sounds simple but it’s very, very difficult because the detail of his play was excellent.

“In terms of a player, he would play wide left and that was his best position for us, obviously where he plays for Villa now and he had that great ability to beat players on the inside or the outside. He showed excellent end product and statistics in terms of goals and assists in his time with us, he was an all-round really, really good kid.”

As such, it is perhaps not surprising that the likes of Manchester City, Ajax, Bayern Munich and Arsenal were all reported to be keeping a very close eye on the progression of the winger earlier this year, nor why former Aston Villa manager, Dean Smith, tipped Philogene-Bidace to make a career for himself at the very top level of the English game.

So, considering the sheer amount of potential the youngster quite clearly possesses, it would appear highly advisable for Gerrard to unleash the forward over the coming weeks and months, as, should the 19-year-old continue his current rate of development, he will undoubtedly come to save NSWE millions of pounds in transfer fees in his position further down the line.

Haddin targets India comeback

Brad Haddin has revealed that the finger broken during the Ashes series was worse than originally thought, and has forced him to push back his comeback date to Australia’s one-day tour of India

Brad Haddin has revealed that the finger broken during the Ashes series was worse than originally thought, and has forced him to push back his comeback date to Australia’s one-day tour of India. Surgeons inserted two plates and five screws into Haddin’s left ring finger during a two-and-a-half hour operation last Thursday, with the ensuing recovery period expected to extend beyond Australia’s one-day series in England and the Champions Trophy in South Africa.Haddin broke the finger moments after the coin toss before the third Test at Edgbaston, forcing Australia’s team management to draft in Graham Manou at short notice. Australia’s senior wicketkeeper recovered to play the final two Tests of the Ashes series with the assistance of pain-killing injections, but was ordered home ahead of the limited-overs series in England for further scans. Those revealed significantly more damage to the top of Haddin’s finger than initially thought, and prompted a revision of his likely comeback date. Haddin had originally hoped to return in time for the Champions Trophy, but is now targetting the seven-match limited-overs series against India, which will begin in Jaipur on October 25.”The surgery was a success from the point of view that the surgeon got everything back in the place it should be, but he also said that it will probably take a little bit longer than we first thought with the rehab,” Haddin told Cricinfo’s Switch Hit podcast. “There was a bit more damage in there than they first thought going in. It’s going to be a long road back. By the time I come back it should be 100% this time.”I’ll be definitely back for the first Test of the Australian summer and I’m hoping to be right for the seven one-dayers in India. I’ve just got a week or so until the stitches come out and then I’ll know a bit more about how the joint is and how I respond to some treatment. In the past when I’ve broken fingers my joints have come back into working order pretty quickly.”Haddin only entered the Test arena after Adam Gilchrist’s retirement, but has already suffered two broken fingers in the line of duty. The first came in the opening session of his debut Test at Sabina Park last year, and resulted in him handing over the gloves to Luke Ronchi for the ensuing one-day series against West Indies. The latest injury has opened the door for Tasmania’s Tim Paine, and Haddin admitted his annoyance at the prospect of another extended stint on the sidelines.”It’s extremely frustrating,” he said. “We’ve played a lot of Test cricket over the last 12 months and I was really looking forward to playing some one-day cricket. I’ve been happy with the way things have been going in my one-day game. But those are the breaks of the job we do. I can’t whinge about it too much. I’ve just got to get on with the rehab and make sure when I come back that it doesn’t happen again.”Haddin conceded the broken finger had caused him significant discomfort during the second half of the Ashes series, though not nearly as much as the pain of defeat at The Oval. “Once you pass yourself fit and step on the field, broken fingers all go out the window,” he said. “It was an uncomfortable time. The wicketkeeping was okay. The biggest problem was with the bat because you couldn’t have any protection on it because it didn’t fit in the glove.”It was obviously disappointing to go out there and lose the Ashes especially when you sit back and take the emotion out of it and look at the stats of some of our guys throughout series. I think from a statistical point of view we were way in front of England but we let ourselves down in a couple of big moments. We’re not far away. We’ve just got to be a bit more consistent and recognise those big moments in the game a bit better.”
