According to La Gazzetta dello Sport journalist Carlo Laudisa, as relayed by Sport Witness, Tottenham Hotspur and Antonio Conte could make an ‘immediate attempt’ to sign Stefan de Vrij.

The Lowdown: Conte era begins…

Following the dismal reign of former Spurs boss Nuno Espirito Santo, who left the club after just four months in charge, it’s safe to say an exciting era has begun with the appointment of serial winner Conte.

The four-time Serie A champion and Premier League-winning boss comes with a glittering CV and glowing reputation of winning silverware where ever he is appointed.

Conte is also tipped to bring a high-intensity, high press philosophy of football back to N17 and instil a winning mentality, as claimed by Italian football experts after Spurs officially announced his appointment (football.london).

He has also been linked to signing a plethora of Serie A stars as news emerges on one of them in Inter defender de Vrij.

The Latest: Conte tipped for ‘immediate attempt’ to sign de Vrij…

As per La Gazzetta, as shared by Sport Witness, Conte has been tipped to make an ‘immediate attempt’ to sign the 29-year-old powerhouse.

This is largely due to his ‘exception’ when it comes to first assessing his new club before taking to the transfer market as he eyes strengthening one key area for Spurs already in central defence.

Indeed, as explained, Conte will apparently want to improve that particular Tottenham area quickly and that is where de Vrij comes in.

The Verdict: Get it done?

Valued at around £45 million by Transfermarkt, Conte’s old club could be forced to sell on the cheap next year if he doesn’t put pen to paper on a new deal – with his current contract expiring in 2023.

This may put Nerazzurri under some pressure in terms of negotiating and one other aspect may be his age.

It isn’t infeasible that the Serie A giants may want to cash in on the 29-year-old while they still can and sooner rather than later, potentially assisting Conte when it comes to possibly making his ‘immediate attempt’.

Lauded as a ‘monster’ by former Lazio teammate Mauricio, he has certainly kept that form up as a reliable defensive option.

He averaged a very impressive 93.8% pass accuracy out from the back for Conte’s title-winner last season, a far higher rate than any Spurs defender managed in that time (WhoScored), possibly indicating he could come as a composed figurehead next to Cristian Romero.

Norman Arendse, who resigned as president last year, has threatened legal action unless statements in the book criticising him were deleted.Arendse’s legal counsel, Dines Gihwala, said he would write to the publisher Jonathan Ball demanding the removal of those statements. Jeremy Boraine, the publishing director of Jonathan Ball, said he would discuss it with Smith. “The book has been published and is in the market,” Boraine told the Johannesburg-based . “I will have to look at it and discuss it with Graeme and our lawyers.”Smith criticised Arendse’s role in picking a controversial squad for the team’s tour to India last year when Andre Nel was replaced by Charl Langeveldt in keeping with South Africa’s transformation policy which requires at least six players of colour in a 14-man squad.”The CSA president was becoming more and more involved in every facet of the game,” Smith wrote. “I think, at various times, he [Arendse] wanted to be captain, coach, CEO, president and convener of selectors, which became very frustrating.”The team was in Bangladesh when the squad to India was announced and Smith said there was a lot of tension within the team.”When I told Langers, ‘you’re going to India,’ there was no smile, no celebration — he just looked at me and said, ‘but why?’ He was very taken aback by his selection and he took the fax and put a red line through his name. Arendse denied interfering with the team selection, maintaining that Langeveldt’s name had been in the original squad that was presented to him.The South Africa Cricketers’ Association chief Tony Irish, who had then feared the national side would lose both Nel and Langeveldt because of political interference, supported Smith in the latest controversy. “I’ve read what Graeme has to say about the Langeveldt-Nel issue and as far as I know it’s pretty accurate,” Irish said.

Eddie Howe has officially been confirmed as the new manager of Newcastle United and replaces interim boss Graeme Jones with immediate effect.

Jones took charge of three games following Steve Bruce’s exit last month, drawing 1-1 with Crystal Palace and Brighton away from home either side of a 3-0 defeat to Chelsea at St. James’ Park.

Clark’s latest outing ended with him giving away a penalty against Brighton in the Premier League. He committed a foul inside the box, albeit a soft one, with Leandro Trossard converting from 12-yards to hand Graham Potter’s side the lead, although the defender did his part to make up for the error by setting up Isaac Hayden’s equaliser.

However, his assist was not enough to detract from the poor standard of his displays this season. He has averaged a dismal SofaScore rating of 6.66 across nine starts, which places him 13th in the Newcastle squad overall – below both Federico Fernandez and Fabian Schar. Clark has been keeping the pair out of the side, yet his statistics suggest that he should be the one sitting on the bench in their place.

Those are sentiments that Magpies reporter George Caulkin agrees with. He tweeted during the Brighton match on Saturday: “I don’t understand how Clark, who gave the penalty away, has kept his place in recent matches.”

The £37k-per-week Irishman is putting in disappointing showings on the pitch and fans will surely be frustrated that he is continuing to be selected as potentially better options in Schar and Fernandez wait in the wings. Schar has averaged a rating of 6.75 in the Premier League whilst his Argentine teammate has managed a score of 6.78, suggesting that both of them have played to a higher standard than Clark.

Therefore, Howe could instantly win over the crowd and become a favourite by dropping the dud and starting Fernandez or Schar in place of him for the match against Brentford after the international break. With no wins in 11 matches, something has to change for Newcastle and this move could be the first one Howe makes in order to benefit the side.

Funk, pagode ou cúmbia?O técnico Reinaldo Rueda ainda não definiu qual será o ‘ritmo’ no comando do ataque do Flamengo na primeira partida da final da Copa do Brasil, na próxima quinta-feira, contra o Cruzeiro. Já o garoto Vinicius Júnior corre por fora para a vaga, mas também tem chances. Se Berrío for o escolhido para atuar como centroavante, o camisa 20 pode entrar no time, mas como ponta direita. Assim como o colombiano, o jovem de 17 anos é muito veloz e bom de dribles.

Até o dia da decisão, Rueda terá mais três treinos para fazer observações e definir quem vai comandar o ataque. Independentemente do ‘ritmo’, a torcida quer ouvir a bola estufando a rede do Cruzeiro.

The Verdict: Good news for Reds

Partey has been a key figure at the heart of Arsenal’s midfield of late, averaging two tackles per game in the league this season, so him being out would be a boost for Liverpool.

Not only that, but the 28-year-old was a dominant force for Atletico Madrid in the Champions League at Anfield in March 2020, receiving a match-high 7.55 rating from WhoScored as Diego Simeone’s side progressed to the quarter-finals.

Arsenal’s midfield would suddenly look more open without Partey in it, especially with Granit Xhaka still injured, so him being fit or not could be key to the eventual outcome.

Paul Scholes has hailed the Ghanaian as ‘brilliant’, which is high praise, and Liverpool could find it easier to create chances without him around to break up their attacks on Saturday.
