Chris Sutton isn’t convinced that domestic success will satisfy the ambitions of Brendan Rodgers.

The Irishman is well on course for a Treble Treble of domestic honours but it seems that Celtic have hit a ceiling of the last 32 in the Europa League as far as Europe is concerned.

Last week the Hoops lost 2-0 at home to Valencia in the Europa League with all but the most fanatical of fans heading out to Spain for the return leg realising that this season’s European travel is about to end.

An away win against Anderlecht last season earned Celtic a Europa League date against Zenit St Petersburg, while sharing the points with RB Leipzig and cleaning up against Rosenborg created the clash with Valencia.

After three seasons of European action it’s hard to make a case for Celtic showing real progress and Sutton aired his concerns on Sunday on BT Sport.

As quoted by Belfast Live, he said:

“I’m worried about what he said, comments attributed to Brendan about reaching a certain level.

“I think there’s a lot of Celtic fans who are thinking that he’s concentrating on the treble and then he will be off in the summer.

“What I would like to happen, and I think Brendan owes it to the Celtic fans, to come out and tell everybody that he wants to stay next season.

“Because, if he does go, Celtic are in a mess in the summer. Short-term loans going back, no centre-half pairing… it’s going to be a massive problem in the summer.

“I think there’s a fair chance that Brendan will be off in the summer.”

Stephen Craigan reminded Sutton that Rodgers was still to reach the halfway point in his four year contract and that he wasn’t required to give monthly declarations of his loyalty.

Celtic face a massive rebuilding job in the summer and completing that while negotiating through four rounds of European qualifiers will be a huge test, so losing Rodgers as well would be a nightmare scenario for the Scottish champions.

Thursday’s return tie with Valencia looks like a lost cause but if Celtic can conjure up an unlikely success there might be some far reaching benefits going forward.

وأردف: “بداية الأهلي كانت قوية، وبعد استئناف الدوري المستويات كانت مذبذبة عند كل الفرق، وما ساهم في تتويج الأحمر هو البداية الجيدة”.

وأكمل: “السويسري رينيه فايلر المدير الفني للأهلي مدرب منظم والإدارة وفرت لاعبين جيدين، واستطاع أن يتفوق الفريق في البداية قبل كورونا وهذا تسبب في التتويج”.

وبسؤاله عن كيف سيتعامل فايلر مع المباريات القادمة؟، أجاب: “سيعرف الفترة المقبلة أن مكسب الدوري مع الأهلي سيعلي إسمه في الشرق الأوسط، هو مدرب جيد واسم الأهلي سيعليه”.

وأردف: “فايلر لديه لاعبين يريدون أن يستعدوا ويجهزوا لدوري الأبطال وهذه البطولة المحببة، هناك لاعبون مثل كهربا والشحات سيأخذان المباريات المقبلة لكي يستعدان”.

وأضاف: “لابد أن تكون خطة عمل الفترة المقبلة معروفه ومعروضة على طاولة لجنة التخطيط بالنادي، لأن الأولوية رقم 1 و 2 و3 هي بطولة إفريقيا”.

وواصل: “نريد تحقيق البطولة حاليا ولا نريد تحقيق أرقام قياسية في الدوري، الأهم هو راحة اللاعبين من أجل دوري الأبطال، حسم بطولة الدوري سيعطي راحة للأهلي”.

جدير بالذكر أن الأهلي سيلاقي نظيره الوداد المغربي يوم 17 أكتوبر المقبل في مباراة الذهاب، فيما تحدد موعد الإياب يوم من نفس الشهر.

أعلن الفريق الأول لكرة اليد بنادي الزمالك، بقيادة حسين زكي، تجديد عقود ثلاثة من لاعبي الفريق.

وكان الجهاز الفني لكرة اليد بالزمالك أعلن منذ قليل عن قائمة الفريق التي سجلت بالاتحاد المصري استعدادًا للموسم الجديد.

وجدد الزمالك عقود كل من محمد علاء لوكا، ومحمود خليل فلفل، وأكرم يسري.

وقام جهاز الزمالك بتسجيل اللاعبين الثلاثة، ضمن قائمة الفريق للموسم المقبل في قوائم الاتحاد المصري لكرة اليد.

Wahbi Khazri was a popular figure towards the start of his time at the Stadium of Light, but things soon changed as he struggled to live up to expectations. 

Sam Allardyce paid over £10 million (as per Chronicle Live) to bring Wahbi Khazri to the Premier League.

The Tunisia international impressed during his early days at the club as he managed to grab his first goal against Manchester United at the Stadium of Light.

But, Khazri, who is valued at £12.6 million (by Transfermarkt), failed to hold down a first-team place under David Moyes the following season, with his commitment and fitness constantly being called into question.

The Wearside club agreed a loan deal with Rennes in the summer of 2017 where he spent all of last season, producing 11 goals and four assists in 34 appearances.

Khazri managed to produce just three goals and two assists in 42 appearances at the Stadium of Light, so it’s safe to say that he never really managed to live up to expectations and certainly won’t be remembered.

However, he ended up moving back to France in the summer of last year as he joined AS Saint-Etienne, and he hasn’t looked back since having produced 13 goals and five assists in 26 appearances.

So, with Josh Maja now plying his trade in the same league as Khazri at Bordeaux, it looks as if the youngster could learn a few things from how the Tunisian has been performing this season.

وقال طارق يحيي في تصريحات تلفزيونية عبر قناة الزمالك: “أشكر الجماهير على المساندة غير الطبيعية خلال العشر أيام الماضية مع الفريق”.

وأكمل: “أشكر مرتضى منصور ومجلس إدارته بالكامل على ثقته في خلال الفترة الماضية، ولن أبخل باسمي وتاريخ على الزمالك، لأنه هو من صنع اسم طارق يحيى”.

واستطرد: “الجونة أضاع دوري الموسم الماضي على الزمالك ولم يتحدث معهم أحد، ولم أقصد أي شىء ولكن أعتب على اللاعبين وعلى إدارة الجونة أن تأخذ موقف، وفي المقابل يقولون إنني أثير الفتنة”.

وواصل: “أشرف بن شرقي منذ 15 يومًا بعيد عن الملعب، هو من اللاعبين (البسكوتة)، لا يمتلك قوة بنيان مثل طارق حامد أو محمود علاء”.

وأردف: “بن شرقي إذا لعب المباراة بالكامل فأنا أقضي عليه وأخشى إصابته، وقررت تغييره قبل صناعته للهدف أمس، ولن أقبل بتجاوزه ضدي ولكنه اعتذر”.

واختتم: “اتصل بي بعد المباراة وكيل أعمال بن شرقي، وخلال غضون أسبوعين أو ثلاثة محمد عبد الشافي سيتواجد مع الفريق، ومن الصعب لحاقه بمباراة الرجاء المغربي في أبطال إفريقيا”.

Everton will be hoping for a strong end to the season after picking up an impressive win in midweek.

Their campaign on the whole has come under some scrutiny thanks to some below par performances and some big money spent in the last few windows, but Marco Silva does have the ability to get the best from his squad and finish with a flurry.

The Toffees, who have plenty of talent already, will no doubt be keen on moving once more during the summer to ensure they bring in even more players of quality, and one man we here in the Tavern feel would be a superb signing is Napoli striker Arkadiusz Milik.

The 15-goal striker has once again been showing his worth this term with some impressive displays in Italy, and with the failures of the likes of Cenk Tosun at Goodison Park, Milik could well prove to be the answer.

The Polish striker has all the tools needed to be a success in the Premier League and he’d be ideal at Everton as a focal point ahead of their talented attacking midfield players.

It’s the missing piece to the Everton jigsaw really, finding a man who can hit the back of the net regularly, but Milik is equipped to be that player.

If Everton can get in their early and stump up the cash to capture Milik, then there is no reason why the Premier League can’t be graced with what will be yet another superb striking talent.

A few months ago, who would have thought Andreas Pereira would remain at Manchester United beyond this season?

Indeed, the Brazilian has certainly made strides under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s guidance, with recent heroic performances impressing both the manager and the club enough into rewarding him with a welcome new contract at the Theatre of Dreams. For both the club and the player, these are exciting times.

According to reports (via Sky Sports), the Red Devils have triggered a one-year contract option for Pereira, meaning he’ll be staying at United beyond this summer. The clever midfielder’s been a bundle of positive energy for the side and even after that disappointment against Burnley, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer pegged him on to find his best form. If anything, that’s another example of the Norwegian’s genius, developing the talent already on offer at Old Trafford.

He’s done so in recent weeks, putting in impressive performances against Liverpool, Southampton and Paris Saint-Germain, with the latter showcasing his blooming ability to add to United’s midfield. While it’s too early to say, both he and his coach look to have saved the club millions in the transfer market by establishing the 23-year-old as a first-team option.

Indeed, Pereira was inspiration n the come-back against Southampton, scoring a scorcher and assisting one to light up Old Trafford. For everyone involved at the club, they’ll certainly hope this is a regular occurrence.

Furthermore, his wily work in operating as a left-winger against PSG was exemplary. Not only did he help move the ball forward, Pereira shadowed Scott McTominay in closing down Marco Veratti and Marquinhos from asserting complete dominance. With his hard-working performance, Pereira proved he can not only fill Ander Herrera’s role but play further forward and be the creative mirror to Juan Mata.

Now, the Red Devils can focus on other areas this summer, strengthening the sort of positions that have been left rotting for years.

Impressive work in recent matches will have made Solskjaer further believe the power of United’s youth system. Pereira is the latest to be trusted and triumphed over by his brightness and with proper pre-season training, he can be an asset who polishes United’s attack into operating much smoothly next season.
