Man Utd’s Nemanja Matic was more creative than Bruno

Bruno Fernandes. Anthony Martial. Mason Greenwood.

Manchester United’s three different goal-scorers in their emphatic 3-0 win over Watford on Sunday afternoon in the Premier League. Naturally, most of the attention has gone to the trio, with Fernandes in particular earning comparisons with the likes of Paul Scholes and Juan Sebastian Veron from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer – not too shabby at all.

But whilst the Portugal international in particular enjoyed an outstanding game with a goal and an assist, one man who may have gone under the radar despite having an impressive outing himself, is Nemanja Matic.

The Serbia international was linked with a move away from Old Trafford in recent weeks, but his performances since the New Year even led to Solskjaer claiming “he is playing the best football since I’ve been here” last month. And against Watford on Sunday, he showed exactly why his manager said that.

As per Sofascore, his 7.8 match rating was only bettered by Fernandes and Greenwood, who of course both got on the score-sheet. Matic’s contributions were far more complete, and more effective in different areas of the pitch. But perhaps the most surprisingly, the former Chelsea man shone in a more creative sense.

Who is that?! Nobody has been able to name the teams all of these obscure managers were once in charge of…

His impressive total of five key passes was more than any other player on the pitch at Old Trafford, including that of January signing Fernandes, who managed four. Not to mention that he also had more touches and passes than the Portugual international, and completed three of his five attempted long balls.

Being the more natural holding midfielder that he is, he also had some fine numbers defensively, registering three apiece for tackles, interceptions and clearances. But it was his use of the ball that ensured he arguably stole the show for the Red Devils.

Whilst he didn’t find the back of the net or provide the assist, he dictated the tempo in the middle of the park, and allowed the likes of Fernandes, Martial and Greenwood to shine. He laid the platform with his cute passes and vision, and Solskjaer will have been left suitably proud by the powerhouse’s touch of magic.

Meanwhile, Man Utd fans are fuming with this injury update on key man.

Liverpool fans lavish praise on teenage attacker Curtis Jones

On Tuesday night, Liverpool’s official Twitter account posted a video of Curtis Jones scoring a hat-trick for the club’s Under-23 side against Sunderland Under-23s.

And it will not come as a surprise to learn that a number of the Merseyside club’s fans took to social media to rave about the 19-year-old.

Jones has made seven first-team appearances for the Reds this season, scoring twice in the FA Cup, including a stunner against Everton.

And a lot of the Liverpool supporters are excited by his talent.

Others, though, suggested that Jones is gaining little from appearing for the 23s and needs to either leave on loan or be promoted to the first team on a full-time basis.

Meanwhile, another fan called for head coach Jurgen Klopp to start the teenager in the fifth round of the FA Cup against Chelsea next month.

Liverpool have one more Premier League match against Watford this weekend before heading to Stamford Bridge in England’s leading cup competition.

Call yourself a Liverpool expert? How much did each of these big-money January signings cost?

The Merseyside giants will then host Bournemouth in the league on March 7 before welcoming Atletico Madrid for the first leg of their last-16 Champions League clash four days later.

Meanwhile, journalist James Pearce has claimed that one Liverpool player needs to improve his performance levels.

Manchester Utd: Fans react to latest on Jadon Sancho transfer links

Manchester United are reportedly the clear front-runners to sign teenage superstar Jadon Sancho this summer according to the Telegraph and loads of United fans have taken to Twitter to react to the latest transfer update.

Sancho has emerged as one of Britain’s hottest talents over the past few years after an excellent spell at Bundesliga title challengers Borussia Dortmund. The England international has scored 14 goals and created 14 assists this season with an 84.9% pass completion rate (via WhoScored.com).

Although the Manchester City academy graduate has been constantly linked with a number of leading European clubs over the years, the Telegraph report the Red Devils are leading the race to make him the flagship signing in the summer. United are said to be offering a whopping £200k a week contract for the 19-year-old playmaker which would break the transfer record they paid for Paul Pogba.

The German club’s chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke has cooled the recent reports, stating “in my opinion, I don’t think he wants to leave” (BBC).

Whilst some United fans are reacting with utter delight, other Red Devils are urging caution as the club recently missed out on signing Erling Braut Haaland, who opted to join Sancho at Borussia Dortmund (talkSPORT).

Aston Villa fans slate Frederic Guilbert

Aston Villa were simply not good enough during their 4-0 loss against Leicester City, as is indicated by the scoreline. There were various times where the defence was cut through and pulled apart far too easily, as Harvey Barnes and Jamie Vardy got a brace each.Frederic Guilbert is one of those who have to take blame for the way the game went, as he put in a performance that was slated by fans.

Looking at his defensive statistics, it doesn’t look as though he performed that badly, as he was successful in five of his six tackles, while also making three clearances and two interceptions.

However, his positioning was atrocious, which made it so easy for Barnes and James Justin to pass the ball around him and get behind into space.

The performance was so bad that one fan claimed that the 24-year-old “shouldn’t play another game this season”.

The criticism didn’t stop there, as it was suggested by some that it was one of the worst performances they have ever seen.

This may seem harsh, but it was a performance in which he was a real weak link that was often exploited by the opposition – which says a lot considering the calamitous nature of Villa’s general performance.

Considering just how poor his display was at the King Power Stadium, it will be interesting to see whether he is picked to start against Chelsea.

Meanwhile, Villa have been shown what they’re missing in recent times.

Palace’s Schlupp is costing them a fortune

Sam Allardyce’s spell was short but sweet at Crystal Palace.

The 65-year-old moved to Selhurst Park in December of 2016, with the Eagles in lots of trouble at the bottom of the table. However, he was able to steer the side away from the relegation zone, with Palace eventually staying up on the penultimate day of the season.

Despite that, though, he didn’t stay beyond the end of the 2016/17 campaign.

He was given money to spend during the January transfer window in an attempt to keep the side in the top flight, and all three of those recruits from the time are still at the club. Patrick van Aanholt and Luka Milivojevic have both proven to be astute pieces of business – van Aanholt is the club’s second top goalscorer this term with three strikes, whilst the latter managed 12 himself last term. Jeffrey Schlupp, meanwhile, has not been as big a success story.

He cost Palace £12m including bonuses from Leicester City, but he has failed to set the world alight. Despite generally playing as a left midfielder, he has just seven goals and eight assists. So far this term, injuries have blighted him, but he has not been that effective even when he has featured, even if he did score twice in his last three Premier League appearances.

His wages are setting back Palace a pretty penny as well. He currently takes home £56,000 a week, which works out at £2,912,000 a year. Given he has a four-year contract at the club, that means he is costing them £11.7m just in wages. Put the transfer fee on that and he will have cost Roy Hodgson’s side a cool £23.7m

Considering that Wilfried Zaha cost just £6m when he returned to the Eagles from Manchester United, it is hard to argue that Schlupp has been, and is worth, the money they paid.

It can be worrying when, by the age of 27, a player’s best position does not seem to be clear – given he has played in eight roles during his time in football, that appears to be the case with the Ghana international. As Palace move forward, this could be a player worth getting off the wage bill.

Elsewhere, this Crystal Palace target could be part of Steve Parish’s “Wilfried Zaha effect”.

West Ham eyeing move for West Brom ace Pereira

West Ham United are interested in signing Matheus Pereira from Sporting Lisbon in the summer transfer window, per Football Insider.

What’s the word?

Pereria is currently on loan at West Brom from Sporting CP and has made a major impact this season.

The 23-year-old has made 33 Championship appearances and has scored six goals, while registering an incredible 16 assists.

Is life under Gold and Sullivan really that bad? Maybe this quiz will change your minds, West Ham fans…

The report states that West Brom are obliged to sign him for £8m if he plays 45 minutes in 30 games, though the Hammers have placed him on their shortlist for the coming transfer window.

His future, though, may depend on whether Slaven Bilic’s side are promoted from the Championship; they are currently second, one point behind Leeds United.

Next Payet

Pereira could finally fill the Dimitri Payet void at West Ham.

Across 60 games for the club, the Frenchman scored 15 goals and provided 23 assists, and Pereira has shown that he can well and truly hack it in England. His numbers are remarkably similar too.

In the 2015/16 campaign, the Frenchman produced 2.3 shots and dribbles per game – as well as producing 12 assists. In comparison, West Ham’s Brazilian target has amassed 2.2 shots on average each match. His key passes, meanwhile are a colossal 2.5 per outing.

The 23-year-old could well link up with Grady Diangana, too, who has also spent the season on loan at the Hawthorns.

It would allow manager David Moyes to unleash a front four of Jarrod Bowen, Pereira, Diangana, and Sebastian Haller, and one has to feel that such a quartet would be of truly excellent quality. More importantly, however, is finally filling the Payet shaped hole in the squad.

Moyes will simply hope that he is able to field the four in the Premier League; they are level on points with 18th-placed AFC Bournemouth.

Meanwhile, West Ham should make a major change even if they stay up!

Woodward would relish chance to lock horns with Daniel Levy

According to London Evening Standard, Manchester United’s chief executive Ed Woodward would relish the chance to lock horns with his Tottenham counterpart, Daniel Levy.

What’s the word?

Levy is one of the shrewdest negotiators in English football, with a fantastic record of turning huge profits in the transfer market, but that doesn’t appear to have put off Manchester United’s main man on all things transfers.

Indeed, as part of an article centred around Harry Kane after the Tottenham striker hinted that he may leave the club at some point in search of success, London Evening Standard cite their own sources as saying Woodward would “relish the chance to lock horns” with Levy.

Levy very rarely sells players to Premier League rivals without a big fee involved, however, with Kyle Walker being the only exception in recent years, having completed a move to Manchester City worth more than £47m.

Who could they lock horns over?

As previously mentioned, London Evening Standard’s article is built around Kane’s situation and as a striker with 136 Premier League goals under his belt at the age of 26, the suggestion that United would be interested in acquiring is far from surprising.

But he’s not the only player who Woodward and Levy could conceivably end up doing battle over. He may have recently signed a new contract, but Toby Alderweireld has often been linked with United in the past (TuttoSport via Daily Mail) and recent links with Diego Godin (Corriere Dello Sport via Mirror) suggest an experienced centre-back may still be on the club’s agenda.

Then there’s also Dele Alli. Four of his five Premier League campaigns, including the current one, have resulted in at least 12 goal involvements and it does seem United are on the hunt for another midfielder, having been linked with Saul Niguez, James Maddison and Jack Grealish since the close of January. Perhaps he’s one to keep an eye on.

For the time being though, all we know is that Woodward views Levy as a challenge he wants to conquer. That likely means a large transfer fee being passed between the two at some point in the near future.

Meanwhile, Manchester United fans are furious about a transfer report involving Paul Pogba and a Juventus star.

West Ham: Slaven Bilic’s 15/16 XI vs David Moyes’ 19/20 XI

Despite spending £99.18m last summer, West Ham are in trouble at the wrong end of the table.

As it stands, they are currently in 16th position, but they are still level on points with Bournemouth, who currently occupy 18th place and are therefore in danger of being relegated to the second tier. The London outfit have already seen one change of manager, too, with David Moyes returning to take over from Manuel Pellegrini, but that appears to have made little difference.

It wasn’t meant to be like this. When the Hammers moved into the London Stadium in 2016, they were looking to establish themselves amongst the top sides in the country, but at times it has been a hindrance rather than a help – the supporters remain unhappy with their new stadium.

Their final season at Upton Park was a positive one, as they finished seventh in the league under Slaven Bilic.

Here, we compare that 2015/16 XI with the one from this campaign.

Key battles

The duel that jumps off the page is Dimitri Payet against Jeremy Ngakia. Four years ago, the former was in stunning form, managing 12 goals and 15 assists in just 38 matches in all competitions. Ngakia, meanwhile, has made just four appearances in his career to date – it would be interesting to see how he dealt with the France international at his peak.

Considering only three sides have conceded more than the Irons’ 50 goals this term in the Premier League, Andy Carroll would surely relish playing against Issa Diop and Angelo Ogbonna – he scored nine times that campaign.

Sebastien Haller, though, would not be too daunted to face a duo of Ogbonna and James Tomkins, who were part of a backline that conceded 50 times themselves in 15/16. Elsewhere, Declan Rice against Cheikhou Kouyate could be a tough battle in the middle of the park – the latter averaged 2.8 tackles per game back then, whilst the former has managed three himself this campaign.

Star players

Payet was undoubtedly the star man for the Irons at Upton Park. No-one could match his tally for goals or assists, whilst his form earned him a call-up for the France squad for Euro 2016 – his stunning late goal in the first match of the tournament against Romania gave his nation all three points.

Others, such as Manuel Lanzini and Michail Antonio – they managed 16 goals and nine assists between them – were in good form, whilst Mark Noble was, as ever, Mr. Reliable in the middle of the park.

He is still a fulcrum of Moyes’ side today, as are Rice and Diop – both have been targeted by the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United this term.

Final result

For this one, there is surely no doubt who the winner would be – the class of this term would likely be no match for that previous XI. Payet on his own would cause plenty of problems, whilst Noble managed his highest-ever WhoScored rating of 7.15 that season.

This campaign, the Hammers have looked disjointed and out of shape, which translates to their league position – they would definitely struggle to contain what was a well-oiled Hammers machine at the time.

For the fans, though, this is a bleak reminder of how far they have regressed when they should have improved – the promises made to them have been broken.

Tottenham fans react to transfer links with Baptiste Santamaria

Loads of Tottenham fans have been reacting to the latest transfer link, as the club are reportedly eyeing a swoop for Baptiste Santamaria.

According to The Express, Leicester are hoping to repeat their incredible N’Golo Kante swoop with a move for Santamaria, who plays as a defensive midfielder for Angers in Ligue 1.

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

However, the report also claims the 25 year-old has been watched by Tottenham and Everton, with Spurs keeping tabs on a possible summer move.

The Lilywhites are without a truly top class defensive midfielder at the moment – Eric Dier has been heavily criticised by fans, who want to see the England star in defence instead, while Victor Wanyama left the club earlier this year.

Tanguy Ndombele meanwhile has struggled to settle in England, and so perhaps Santamaria could play a more defensive role and allow the record signing to move further forward and flourish.

The Angers man averaged a whopping 3.3 tackles per game in France before the season was suspended, and you can find some of the best fan reactions to the links down below…

Everton: Frustrated fans hope for sale of Fabian Delph

Twitter account @thetoffees_com has put the subject of Fabian Delph’s future with the club up for debate, asking fellow Blues whether they want to keep him or sell him.

Everton acquired the services of the England international last year for just £9 million, signing him on a three-year deal from Manchester City (via Sky Sports). Delph’s CV certainly showed his pedigree, notching 134 appearances for Aston Villa and winning six trophies with City – including two league titles and the FA Cup (via Transfermarkt).

However, his impact at Goodison Park has been more of a ripple than a splash. This season, Delph has failed to contribute to any of his side’s goals and has a WhoScored rating of just 6.55. The 30-year-old has also been noted to lack discipline, which was observed earlier this campaign when he was sent off against Watford.

Everton fans have been voting on whether the club should keep hold of Delph, and the majority want to see the back of him. These supporters have made their feelings clear with tweets such as ‘bye bye’, ‘get rid’ and ‘just release him’.

What’s your take, Blues? Should the club keep or sell Fabian Delph? Let us know in the comments!
