Barton launches a dig at Neville for backing Unsworth

Tottenham Hotspur fans fail to get excited about new stadium

These are exciting times for Tottenham Hotspur as they aim to match their rising status in Premier League football with a new state-of-the-art stadium.

Construction on the club’s new home is expected to be finalised in time for the 2018-19 season.

Tottenham have been keeping fans regularly updated on the progress of the ground, but the recent images did not welcome positive responses from the entire fanbase.

At the moment, Mauricio Pochettino’s side are struggling on the pitch and have not won a league game in their last three attempts.

The negativity began in the North London derby, when Spurs were beaten 2-0 by arch rivals Arsenal at the Emirates.

The team could only muster a 1-1 draw with West Bromwich Albion in the following game, and on Tuesday they were beaten 2-1 by Leicester City.

After the round of midweek fixtures, Tottenham have dropped to seventh in the table and are now 16 points adrift of leaders Manchester City.

The remainder of the so-called ‘top six’, including City, Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool all reside above Spurs at the moment.

Due to their current run of bad form, some fans were not overly excited by the stadium photos.

West Ham lack leaders and Moyes must be backed in January to sort the issue out

Without a Premier League win since the end of September and firmly rooted in the relegation zone, West Ham United must have seen the fixture against fellow strugglers Everton at Goodison Park last month as the ideal opportunity to pick up a positive result to turn their season around.

The Merseyside outfit came into the clash with one victory in their previous 12 games, and they had just suffered successive 5-1 and 4-1 defeats against Atalanta in the Europa League and Southampton in the top flight respectively.

Confidence was at an all-time low for the Toffees and it was one of those situations where the players’ heads went down as soon as they conceded a goal, often leading to a collapse.

Despite the announcement that the huge match would be caretaker boss’ David Unsworth’s final one in charge before Sam Allardyce took the reins, the Irons players knew it was a great chance to pick up a much-needed three points and that they had to stand up and be counted.

David Moyes’ men travelled to Goodison Park on the back of a 1-1 draw with Leicester City at the London Stadium, where they recovered from conceding an early goal to pick up a well-deserved point.

There were certainly shoots of recovery and even though they were missing injured trio Jose Fonte, Javier Hernandez and Andy Carroll for the trip north, there still would have been an expectation among their supporters that they could pick up a positive result.

With characters like Winston Reid, Joe Hart, Cheikhou Kouyate and Pablo Zabaleta in the starting XI you thought that West Ham had the players with leadership and experience to step up on Merseyside, but it never happened.

A hat-trick from Wayne Rooney and a late Ashley Williams header consigned them to a shocking 4-0 defeat, although they would certainly have been thinking about what might have been had Manuel Lanzini not missed a penalty when the score was 2-0, or Aaron Cresswell hadn’t have seen his fine effort hit the woodwork.

4-0 was how it did end however, and the poor performances from Kouyate, Pedro Obiang and Angelo Ogbonna among others showed that West Ham need to do some serious work to their squad during the January transfer window.

The display in the defeat to Manchester City on Sunday was improved, but the Irons lacked those leaders that could have helped them hang on when they went a goal up against the Premier League leaders. Someone that would have led them up the field when they were constantly dropping too deep in the second-half.

Mark Noble has this ability of course, but his showings this season suggest he isn’t good enough to be a starter anymore, and it means that Moyes will be looking for leaders with Premier League experience in the New Year.

The Scot will need to be backed by the board that has given him the task of helping the club to survive this season, and they shouldn’t be thinking about anything beyond that at the moment.

West Ham have already been linked with Bournemouth’s Harry Arter and West Bromwich Albion’s Jonny Evans, and those are the kind of leaders and players with battling qualities that they require to fight for results on the pitch and get the London Stadium crowd right behind them.

While Arter and Evans would be great additions in January, the east London outfit should also be looking at other strong individuals like Watford’s Troy Deeney, who hasn’t been a regular under Marco Silva at Vicarage Road, while players like Stoke City’s Ryan Shawcross and Brighton and Hove Albion’s Lewis Dunk could also be effective signings for the backline.

Of course, buying those players certainly wouldn’t be cheap and Moyes is relying on David Gold and David Sullivan to give him the money that will prevent the club falling into the Championship, because that is a real possibility this season based on what has happened so far.

If the Scot has to sell players like Andre Ayew and club-record buy Marko Arnautovic first then so be it, but if he doesn’t buy some leaders and players that are willing to put their body on the line for West Ham before February 1, then it is looking increasingly likely that the Irons’ six-season stay in the Premier League will come to an end.

Liverpool fans are not happy with Jurgen Klopp’s team selection for derby clash

We’re rapidly approaching today’s Merseyside Derby with both Liverpool and Everton set to battle it out for all three points in the English Premier League.

It’s a huge match for both sets of supporters and is usually an occasion that demands you play your best, most in-form players. However, Jurgen Klopp has sprung a few surprises with his starting eleven.

Both Roberto Firmino and Philippe Coutinho miss out on today’s action, despite both producing blistering performances mid-week to blow away UEFA Champions League opponents Spartak Moscow. Coutinho got a hat-trick that night and his Brazilian teammate managed a goal and an assist.

Supporters have been left fuming with the decision, failing to understand why neither were rested with the game won against the Russians if it meant they wouldn’t be able to turn out today at Anfield.

Will Kloppp be proven right by the time full-time comes around or has he made a massive error?

Tottenham fans react to Alderweireld bid

It looks like Manchester United will finally make their move for Toby Alderweireld this week, and Tottenham fans are all saying the same thing.

It’s been a long time coming, but reports suggest Manchester United will finally make a concrete offer for Tottenham’s Belgian beast now his country have been eliminated from the World Cup.

According to the Daily Express, the Red Devils will contact Spurs this week with a £50m offer for the 29 year-old.

Of course, no one wants to lose a top centre back, but getting upwards of £50m for a player entering his thirties next March with a history of hamstring problems should be seen as good business.

Fans are all saying the same thing about the rumours though, that the Red Devils must be made to give up Anthony Martial for any deal to take place. The two clubs have formed quite the rivalry since Spurs solidified their place in the top four, and getting Martial would be quite the coup.

The 22 year-old has been linked with Spurs ever since news broke that the Frenchman wants to leave Old Trafford, and fans are in complete agreement that he must be included in any deal to send Alderweireld the other way.

Newcastle fans split over Origi links

According to The Chronicle, Newcastle United are interested in signing Liverpool forward Divock Origi in this summer’s transfer window.

Origi joined Liverpool from Lille in the summer of 2015, and the attacker scored 10 times in his first season with the Premier League club.

The Belgium international then struck 11 goals in all competitions for the Reds during the 2016-17 campaign, but was sent on loan to Bundesliga outfit Wolfsburg last term.

The 23-year-old managed seven goals during his time with Wolfsburg, but the 6ft 1in ace has returned to Liverpool ahead of the 2018-19 season.

According to The Chronicle, Newcastle are interested in signing Origi in this summer’s transfer window.

The Magpies are in desperate need of a new striker this summer due to the struggles of Dwight Gayle and Joselu last season, while Aleksandar Mitrovic will soon move on to Fulham on a permanent deal.

A number of Newcastle fans would be interested in a deal for Origi, but not everyone is in agreement. A selection of the Twitter reaction to the deal can be seen below:

If Barcelona want Simon Mignolet, Liverpool should shake their hand off

Barcelona are considering a shock move for Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet as a replacement for wantaway Jasper Cillessen according to Spanish news outlet Marca, as cited in The Sun.

What’s the story?

The 30-year-old was for a long time the undisputed Liverpool no.1 following his move from Sunderland in 2013, but lost his spot last season to Loris Karius.

Now with the record arrival of Alisson, the Belgian goalkeeper is even further down Jurgen Klopp’s pecking order.

Barcelona’s substitute goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen is being linked with a move away from the club and Ernesto Valverde will be keen for a backup to Marc-André ter Stegen, and Mignolet is the surprising name in the hat.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”273048″ player=”12034″ title=”Has Klopp just cranked up the pressure on himself”]

No loss to Liverpool

With Alisson now relegating Loris Karius to the bench, there’s no need for Mignolet to hang about at Anfield.

It would be a wise move for both the club and the player if they part ways and if Barcelona are mad enough to want Mignolet then Liverpool should shake their hand off.

Liverpool have had two error-prone goalkeepers on their hands for too long and now it’s time to let one of them go.

Potential Consequences: Newcastle’s wheeler-dealer transfer policy

According to The Sun, Newcastle owner Mike Ashley has offered manager Rafa Benitez a £100m budget over three years if he signs a contract extension with the Magpies but the Spaniard is so suspicious that he will not commit even with the promise of extra cash for players.

Previously The Sun had reported Benitez’s frustrations with Ashley’s transfer policy, with the boss saying that he had to “wheel and deal” in the market to get the players he wanted.

Ashley keeps a tight rein on the budget available to managers at St James’s, and is currently forcing Benitez to sell players to the same value of any additions he would like to make.

So far, the club have sold Mikel Merino to Real Sociedad for £10.8m and used the money to cover the cost of making ex-loanee Martin Dubravka’s move permanent, securing Ki Sung-yueng on a free transfer and taking Kenedy back on loan from Chelsea.

But what other deals might come about thanks to Ashley’s enforced policy this summer if Benitez doesn’t sign the contract? Football FanCast take a look at the potential goings on at Newcastle this summer.

Mitrovic out / Rondon in

Aleksandar Mitrovic was on loan at Fulham for the second half of last season and scored 12 goals in 17 Championship games to fire the West London side to the Premier League via the playoffs. The Serbian striker has since been heavily linked with a £20m permanent move to Craven Cottage and his departure could make room for West Brom front-man Salomon Rondon, who it seems Benitez would prefer to lead the line for his side.

The Magpies recently had an ambitious loan bid for the Venezuelan striker rejected which would have seen them eventually pay £19m, despite his release clause only being a straight £16.5m. For Benitez to be able to pay this though he will first have to offload the troublemaker Mitrovic.

Aarons and Murphy out / Townsend in

To bring in the quality that Benitez wants, he may be forced to offload two players to make up the cost of a new signing. Rolando Aarons looks set to make the opposite move to Rondon this summer as the 22-year-old has been linked heavily with West Brom, but as he is only rated at £630,000 by Transfermarkt the fee he commands will be nowhere near enough to cover the cost of a move for Crystal Palace’s Andros Townsend.

Townsend left Newcastle to join Palace in a £14m deal when the Magpies were relegated from the Premier League at the end of the 2015/16 season, but now Benitez is keen on bringing the 27-year-old winger back to St James’s, according to Sky Sports.

In order to get his target though Benitez should sell Jacob Murphy, who joined the club in July last year. Murphy played 28 games in all competitions last season for Newcastle but registered just one goal and one assist in that time – numbers that are nowhere near good enough for an attacker at a top tier side. Added to that, the 23-year-old is valued at £6.3m by Transfermarkt and could bring in a sizeable chunk of money for Benitez.

Lascelles out / Dawson in

Whilst Benitez may not miss players such as Mitrovic or Aarons, if he is forced to sell his captain it could well be the final nail in the coffin that is the relationship between Ashley and his manager.

Earlier this month Jamaal Lascelles was the subject of a £25m bid from West Ham, which Newcastle did reject, but if a bigger bid does come in for the former Nottingham Forest centre-back then the powers that be may find it too good to turn down.

If Lascelles was to leave the club it would leave Benitez with a lack of leaders. Another raid on West Brom may be the answer for Rafa if this is the case, with 28-year-old Craig Dawson having handed in a transfer request to Baggies boss Darren Moore. Dawson also missed the club’s pre-season training trip to Portugal as he looks for a move back to the Premier League following West Brom’s relegation last season.

Dawson, valued at £20m according to The Daily Mail, could certainly be a success at St James’s with his passion, work rate and ability to get on the score sheet from set pieces but if it means losing his captain, Benitez may not be quite as enthused.

So, Newcastle fans, would you accept the club selling Jamaal Lascelles if it meant two new signings could come in?

Harry Maguire just isn’t the man for Manchester United

Jose Mourinho is desperate to sign a centre-back in the summer transfer window.

It’s been no secret that the Portuguese wants defensive reinforcements at Old Trafford. He remained unconvinced by Eric Bailly and Vitor Lindelof and preferred to use Chris Smalling and Phil Jones in his back four. If United are to challenge City for the title next year, they need a world-class defender to shore up their back line.

According to reports, United have made Leicester City defender, Harry Maguire, their top target. Maguire joined the Foxes last summer from Hull City and enjoyed an excellent World Cup campaign with England. United will have to fork out around £70m to tempt Leicester into selling their prized asset.

Valued at £31.5m by Transfermarkt, Maguire is a top defender but United would be severely overpaying and should consider other options. The Englishman excelled in Gareth Southgate’s system but was frequently caught out in a back four. His ability to bring the ball out of defence works in a back three but leaves gaps in a two-man partnership.

Instead, United should put all their efforts into signing Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld. The Belgian has established himself as the best defender in the Premier League in recent years and would be a much less risky signing than Maguire. The clubs remain way apart of their valuations with the 29-year-old available for just £25m next summer.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”274593″ player=”13308″ title=”Harry Maguire”]

Should United fail to land him this summer, Tottenham would be forced to reduce their price in the January window. Going all out for Alderweireld makes much more sense than splashing £70m on Maguire.

Manchester United fans, thoughts?

Kyle Lafferty would add the finishing touches to Gerrard’s squad

Rangers are set to submit a second bid of £300,000 for Kyle Lafferty after having an initial bid of £200,000 rejected by Hearts, according to The Daily Record.

What’s the story?

The 30-year-old spent four years at Rangers between 2008-2012 before moving to Swiss club FC Sion.

The striker returned to the SPL last summer when he signed for Hearts and now Steven Gerrard is keen to add more firepower to his squad and wants Lafferty to head back to the Ibrox.

The Northern Ireland international scored 12 league goals last season and has recently been the subject of a £200,000 bid from Rangers, which was rejected as Hearts want a fee of £1million for their star striker according to the report.

Lafferty’s representatives are having discussions with the Hearts’ owner with the hope of brokering a move away from Tynecastle Park, since the player has had his heart set on joining Gerrard’s new project at Rangers.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”275149″ player=”12034″ title=”Rafa’s Pub Facts Zlatan Richarlison & Alisson”]

How will the saga end?

With Rangers keen to sign Lafferty and the player desperate for a move, it seems certain that a deal will take place this summer, as Hearts won’t want to keep an unhappy player on their books.

Rangers are playing hard-ball and it’s fair enough that Hearts want up to £1million for the poacher who is one of the club’s most valuable assets.

If the Gers do land their target, it may take a little while for their new strike force to bed in, but it’s certainly an upgrade on their options from last season.
