Pundit expects Lukaku to be a failure at Manchester United

Former Arsenal striker Paul Mariner believes that Manchester United’s new signing Romelu Lukaku will struggle to succeed at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils confirmed on Monday that the Belgian international has joined the club for what many media outlets claim is a £75m fee.

Lukaku, who was heavily linked to his former club Chelsea, has spent the last three years playing for Everton.

He finished second to Golden Boot winner Harry Kane last season after finding the back of the net 25 times in the top flight, and the pressure will be on when he lines up in Jose Mourinho’s team.

The 24-year-old has been handed the number nine shirt, which was vacated by Zlatan Ibrahimovic when he was released as a result of a serious knee injury.

While Mariner hopes that Lukaku has a successful career at United, he is concerned that the striker will not be able to handle the pressure, nor come up with answers to break through sturdy defences.

He told ESPN:

“With no disrespect to Everton, in previous seasons playing for Everton in a No 9 shirt, there’s not that much media coverage, there’s not much pressure.

“The biggest ask that I have about Lukaku is in those tight areas, when teams are going to sit in, when teams are going to defend deep, has he got the quick feet to open up defences and finish? I don’t know. It is a no at the moment, I hope he does well. At the moment, from what I’ve seen at Everton, I don’t see him being a success.”

HYS: How much would you sell Coutinho for?

According to reports from The Daily Star, Barcelona are preparing another bid for Philippe Coutinho after seeing a £72million offer rejected by Liverpool.

The 27-cap Brazil international has steadily established himself as one of the top attacking talents in the Premier League since arriving at Anfield from Inter Milan, finishing last season with 13 goals and seven assists in 31 top flight appearances.

The Daily Star claim Liverpool continue to insist the 25-year-old isn’t for sale but every player in world football, whether it’s Lionel Messi or Liam Ridgewell, inevitably has their price.

With that in mind, we have an interesting question for Liverpool fans – how much do you think Coutinho is worth in the current transfer market?

Should Liverpool accept Barcelona’s next offer, which will reportedly be £80million, or could the attacking midfielder attract a much higher fee?

Let us know where you think Liverpool should draw the line by voting in the poll below…

Man United supporters pay tribute to Herrera

Tipped as a potential future captain of Manchester United, Spanish midfielder Ander Herrera has developed into a key player for the Red Devils over the last 12 months.

Herrera did not start Man United’s Premier League opener against West Ham United on Sunday afternoon, but he is expected to play a key role in Jose Mourinho’s side this season.

The midfielder might look like a teenager, but he turned 28 on Monday, and as expected, there was a birthday message waiting for him on Man United’s official Twitter page.

It would be fair to say that Herrera is one of his club’s most popular players with the supporters, and the response section was flooded with praise for the Spain international.

The arrival of Nemanja Matic will make it more difficult for Herrera to feature on a week-to-week basis, but with the sheer volume of games this season, there is no doubt that the former Athletic Bilbao midfielder will play plenty of football during the 2017-18 campaign.

A selection of the responses can be found below.

In Focus: Juventus make move for Can

According to Corriere dello Sport, Juventus have made a £22.5m offer for Liverpool midfielder Emre Can as the Italian champions look to sign the German international this summer.

What’s the story?

Can, who helped Germany win the Confederations Cup in Russia earlier this summer, scored five times and registered two assists in 32 Premier League appearances last season.

The 23-year-old has entered the final year of his contract at Liverpool, however, and it is understood that the two parties are struggling to come to an agreement.

Towards the end of last month, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp insisted that Can would not be leaving Anfield this summer, but negotiations are no further forward approaching the start of the new season.

According to Corriere dello Sport, Juventus have been closely monitoring proceedings over the last couple of weeks, and have now made an offer of £22.5m in order to bring the midfielder to Turin.

Would it represent a fair deal for Liverpool?

It is extremely difficult to determine a fair price in the current market when considering the amount of money that has been spent by European clubs in this transfer window.

Under normal circumstances, an offer of £22.5m for a player that will be out of contract next summer would be considered quite generous, but it would not be a surprise if Liverpool rejected the interest.

Can has had his problems since moving to Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen in 2014, but he showed his immense potential last season, and is a key part of Germany’s plans moving forward.

Juventus have seemingly identified Can as the perfect signing after missing out on a number of other targets, although Liverpool will surely make a last-ditch attempt to thrash out a deal.

It seems increasingly likely that Philippe Coutinho will leave Liverpool for Barcelona this summer, and losing Can in the same window would be a big blow for the Merseyside outfit.

Chelsea’s transfer window history is repeating as Conte repeats a ‘clever’ signing

Despite late drama, missed targets and, potentially, a very unhappy manager, Chelsea’s transfer window had some high points. And with the deadline day purchase of Davide Zappacosta, it looks like history could be repeating itself.

The biggest deals aren’t always the best ones. No matter how good Alvaro Morata turns out to be for Chelsea, everyone will know what he brings to the table and everyone will have their plan for trying to stop it. They may not be successful, and Morata might score loads of goals, but it’s not the same as finding something completely new and totally unexpected. In other words, it’s big, but it’s not clever.

But this time last year, it was a smaller, more intelligent signing that brought Chelsea that bit closer to the title.

After a couple of games to assess his squad, Antonio Conte signed Marcos Alonso in a move which was widely considered an illogical panic buy. Here was a player who most people in England regarded as a Bolton Wanderers flop, even if he was too young back then to make a serious judgement about. The attacking full-back who looked out of his depth in the North West but who finally found a niche in Italy was surely destined to become yet another fancy foreign Premier League flop.

It turned out that he was the signing to totally revolutionised Chelsea’s season.

It was crucial that Conte had time to see his squad play some competitive games before concluding his transfer business. He saw that he was two players short of being able to play the back-three formation which eventually took the league by storm and bamboozled the opposition. It’s become a cliche, but that really did win the league for Chelsea. Signing N’Golo Kante was a big factor in Chelsea’s season. He was clearly crucial to the system, and was instrumental in two title victories in a row. But without David Luiz and Marcos Alonso Conte would never had had the opportunity to change system.

They were was the ‘clever’ signings of the year. Alonso especially wasn’t the most expensive signing of the summer, nor was he the most explosive. But he was the canniest signing, and possibly even the most effective. Conte took a player who few in England knew much about and turned him into the entire reason Edin Hazard was able to roam free in behind Diego Costa.

This summer, Chelsea looked like having a chance to retain the title with similarly canny signings. The idea of strengthening when you’re already strong is a well-established principle when it comes to retaining the title. Fresh impetus and new, hungry players are needed, and in the Premier League you can’t stand still. Standing still is really going backwards.

Chelsea had it easy, in a way. They had obvious areas in which they could strengthen. Victor Moses wasn’t a wing-back by trade and his FA Cup final performance showed he could be exposed by the opposition at times. Diego Costa, often anonymous from January onwards could have been replaced by a more consistent player. And N’Golo Kante could have been given a more natural partner than either Nemanja Matic or Cesc Fabregas.

It may have taken until deadline day, and it may have been after quite a number of players strangely (worryingly?) rejected the chance to join the Blues this summer, but the signing of Davide Zappacosta just before the window closed means that Conte now has potential upgrades in each of those positions identified above. And in a very similar vein to Marcos Alonso last year, the Italian will provide the Blues with something completely different.

An attacking right-back by trade, it’s Zappacosta’s speed and stamina which will stand out to an English audience. But as with all attacking full-backs, the worry is always about the defensive side of the game. With Antonio Conte’s wing-back system looking firmly set in place for another season, that shouldn’t be too much of a problem. He’s a more natural defender than Victor Moses, but will provide the same speed in attack along with the ability to run up and down the wing all game.

This looks like another clever signing. One that might not be the most glamorous, or even the first choice. But it’s clear that Conte has identified a player he can use for a specific role, and just like Alonso last season, it’s not the name of the player but what the manager has in mind for him that should scare the rest of the Premier League.

The other clever signing is Danny Drinkwater. Another player who doesn’t seem like the most glamorous signing, and one who many not turn out to be first choice at the club this season. But he was the player who won the league title playing alongside N’Golo Kante and who complemented the Frenchman perfectly when the pair starred at Leicester City. It’s not a big-name transfer by any means, but it’s one where you can see that it’s been done with a strategy in mind. Conte has put some thought into it.

None of this is to say that Chelsea have had the perfect window. They came out of it having eventually strengthened in all of the right areas, but they’ve also lost players who could have provided strength in depth and a chance at even greater rotation for the long season ahead which will involve fighting on four fronts. And yet, despite the talk of Chelsea crisis, an unhappy and a bare-bones squad, they’ve still managed to come out of the summer stronger than when they went into it. And they went into it as champions.

But most importantly, it’s clear that Chelsea are doing what they did last year – thinking about the makeup of their squad and how to use certain attributes to make it better and confuse the opposition. Despite the difficulties this summer, when the dust settles, Chelsea might well look dangerous once again.

Revealed: 81% of Man United fans want Axel Tuanzebe to start vs Burton

Manchester United’s Carabao Cup clash with Burton Albion this evening gives Jose Mourinho the chance to rest key players who’ve already delivered in abundance this season, pushing the Red Devils to joint-top of the Premier League table with 13 points from five games.

The Old Trafford gaffer does have plenty of experienced players to choose from – it’s rather incredible the likes of Chris Smalling and Ander Herrera have been forced to settle for bit-part roles this season – but the League Cup is usually seen as an opportunity for young players to receive some exposure to first-team football.

With that in mind, we asked United supporters earlier today whether 6 foot 1 defender Axel Tuanzebe should start against the Championship outfit this evening and according to our poll, a whopping 81% think he should.

The teenager has already made five first-team appearances for the Red Devils but would surely relish the chance to impress his manager at Old Trafford against Burton.

In Focus: Everton players think Ronald Koeman wants out despite vote of confidence

According to reports in The Sun, Everton’s players are convinced that Ronald Koeman wants out following the 1-0 loss to Burnley at Goodison Park on Sunday.

What’s the word, then?

Well, The Sun says that the Dutchman is under huge pressure following the club’s disappointing start to the season which has left them just two points above the Premier League relegation zone, and taking just one point from a possible six in the Europa League.

Following the Merseyside outfit’s fourth defeat in seven top flight fixtures this term – after a summer of spending – Koeman refused to answer questions about his future but The Sun says that the senior players believe that he is waiting to be fired by ower Farhad Moshiri.

The report adds that his demeanour around the training ground has also changed dramatically after the poor sequence of results and with the fans beginning to get on his back.

Hasn’t Moshiri said his job is safe, though?

For the minute, yes.

The Everton owner released a statement via Sky Sports News presenter Jim White late on Sunday evening saying that his manager has his “total support”.

However, The Sun believe that the club is already lining up potential replacements, with former Bayern Munich boss Carlo Ancelotti one of the names on their list.

What happens next?

Well, unless Koeman decides to resign it seems as though his job at Goodison Park is safe for now, and he now has 12 days to try and sort out the issues the team are currently experiencing thanks to the latest international break.

Those players that think the 54-year-old wants out must try and forget those thoughts and continue to fight for their manager.

The trip to newly-promoted Brighton and Hove Albion on October 15 is one that they must pick up a positive result from, and a loss on the south coast would surely lead to the Dutchman getting the boot.

Newcastle delighted with impact of Ayoze Perez in Sunday’s draw

Newcastle United earned an impressive point away to Southampton on Sunday in a thrilling encounter that proved to be one of the highlights of the English Premier League weekend.

The Magpies, in confident mood, twice took the lead against the home side and while they were ultimately pegged back by a Manolo Gabbiadini double, it was undoubtedly a smashing result for Rafa Benitez’s side.

Isaac Hayden fired home in the first half, exploiting a slow Fraser Forster to send the away fans into raptures.

Celebrations in the away end were again ignited just seconds after Southampton’s first equaliser, when Ayoze Perez fired past Forster to put Newcastle back in the driving seat.

It was Perez’s first goal of the season and came at a time Magpies fans were beginning to lose faith in his ability to be an effective top-flight attacker.

He’s been much criticised this term but perhaps his effort on Sunday can be the basis for an extended run of form.

Fans were delighted with his overall contribution and took to Twitter to share their thoughts on his performance…

Aston Villa join race to sign 15-year-old Goalkeeper Mikolaj Bieganski

According to ESPN, Aston Villa have joined Manchester United and Tottenham in the race to sign 15-year-old Polish Goalkeeper Mikolaj Bieganski.

What’s the Story?

Aston Villa are set to battle it out with some of the Premier League’s elite to sign teenager Mikolaj Bieganski. The Polish goalkeeper turns 16 next April and reports seem to suggest that he will be making his way to England at this point.

Manchester United and Tottenham are also thought to be interested in the youngster, who has been impressing a number of scouts around Europe.

Who is Bieganski?

Born in 2002, Bieganski has spent his youth career with hometown club Skra Czestochowa, who currently compete in III Liga Opole-Silesia Division, Poland’s fourth tier of professional football. Such are his talents in goal, he has featured in the first team squad a number of times this season already.

He first caught the eye of European scouts during an international under-16’s tournament, upon which a number of  English teams acted quickly to secure trials for the ‘keeper.

Bieganski has actually spent time training with Villa, United and Spurs, and all are thought to have been impressed with his capabilities at such a young age.

His current club Skra would be unable to stand in the way of Bieganski moving to England. In fact, they would probably welcome his departure, as future financial rewards may be significant.

Would Bieganski be a good signing for Aston Villa?

While Bieganski’s talents are somewhat unknown due to his unbelievably young age, it would be a real coup if Villa could land the best under-16 goalkeeper in world football before Manchester United and Tottenham do.

Declan Rice stakes claim for regular role with strong display vs Tottenham

Slaven Bilic was widely criticised for his decision to hook off promising youngster Declan Rice at half time against Newcastle United after committing an error, not least because his involvement in the first team since has been minimal.

But Bilic has turned to the Carabao Cup as the competition to give the 18-year-old more experience at senior level, starting him in the 3-0 win over Bolton Wanderers and again last night as the Hammers staged a stunning comeback to beat London rivals Tottenham Hotspur 3-2 at Wembley.

The Irons were their usual shambolic selves in the first half as Tottenham cut them open twice but they rallied together during the interval and their second-half performance was superb, Rice earning the plaudits for the composure he showed despite the pressure created by the uncertainty over his manager’s future.

And tellingly of how impressive the youngster – who Transfermarkt value at £450k – was at Wembley, he made the most interceptions of any West Ham player while ranking joint-second for tackles and clearances. He also weighed in with one block, showing a willingness to put his body on the line, and calmly completed 97% of his passes.

Considering Bilic allegedly needs a positive result against Crystal Palace this weekend to save his job and that West Ham’s more experienced defenders just haven’t delivered this season, with 17 Premier League goals conceded already, should Rice keep his place in the team for the trip to Selhurst Park?
