Sri Lanka Cricket has pencilled in June 2023 for the launch of its inaugural T10 league. Titled the Lanka T10 League, the tournament will also host both a men’s and women’s tournament in the same slot first – meaning matches would take place “concurrently,” potentially on alternating days, though SLC is yet to iron out the details.Related

Lanka Premier League 2022 to run from December 6 to 23, SLC confirms

SLC also announced that six men’s teams and four women’s teams will take part, with each to be named after a Sri Lankan city – similar to those in the Lanka Premier League. While the precise dates and venues are yet to be finalised, it is expected that venues in Kandy and Hambantota will likely host the matches, while SLC anticipates substantial player registrations – over 1600, which was the number for the most recent Abu Dhabi T10 League – for the yet to be announced player draft. Each team will be allowed a 16-member squad, in which there can be a maximum of six foreign players. The tournament will be held over 12 days in June next year. However, going forward it is understood that SLC will look to hold it in December, with the LPL set for the August window.”Next year also we will have the LPL in December, but going forward we have reserved a window in August for that,” SLC CEO Ashley de Silva said. “So for next year, we will have the Lanka T10 in June and the LPL in December, but from 2024 onwards, the T10 tournament will move to December and the LPL to August.”Sri Lanka has long been a proponent of T10 cricket, with it being the first Full Member to sanction and endorse its players to participate in the Abu Dhabi T10 League. Since then, the cricket boards in the West Indies, Zimbabwe, Afghanistan and Bangladesh have followed suit.

Leeds star nearly left in 2024, now he’s one of the best in the league

Leeds United’s form in the Championship this season has been nothing short of sensational, helping Daniel Farke’s side sit top of the table with just over a third of the campaign remaining.

The German has galvanised the squad after the disappointment of last season’s play-off final defeat, currently sitting in pole position to secure a return to the Premier League.

The Whites haven’t tasted defeat in the league since the end of November, enduring a 14-game unbeaten run which has helped fend off the threat from the likes of Sheffield United and Burnley in recent weeks.

Leeds United manager DanielFarkeapplauds fans

It’s also a testament to the playing squad, sustaining such high levels of performance during the incredible run, with every player contributing to their success.

Numerous players have taken their game to the next level after last season, cementing their place as a first-team regular under the German at Elland Road.

Leeds United’s star performers in 2024/25

Joel Piroe moved to Yorkshire after relegation to the second tier last season, arriving with high hopes after scoring 20 times in his final season at Swansea City.

However, despite notching 14 goals for the Whites in his first campaign at the club, he split options between the fanbase as to whether he was worth the £10m fee paid for his signature.

It’s safe to say the Dutchman has silenced his critics this year, already matching last season’s tally with 14 games left, currently sitting as the club’s top scorer.

Ao Tanaka is a player who arrived in the summer to aid this season’s promotion push, looking to be an absolute bargain for the £3.5m fee spent to prise him away from Fortuna Düsseldorf.

The Japanese international has featured 29 times in the league to date, nailing down his place at the base of the midfield, operating alongside various partners such as Ethan Ampadu and Ilia Gruev.

However, despite the form of the aforementioned pair, another first-team member has exceeded beyond all expectations and resurrected his career in Yorkshire.

The Leeds player who’s been one of the best in the Championship

Left-back Junior Firpo joined the club back in the summer of 2021 from Barcelona, looking to inject further quality into the backline as they tried to build on their impressive first season back in the top flight.

junior-firpo-leeds-united-farke-championship-ezgjan-alioski-jamie-shackleton

The full-back has since made over 100 appearances for the Whites, often being the go-to choice in that department, but not without criticism – in which he has received his fair share.

After relegation to the Championship, he remained as a regular starter, featuring 29 times in the league throughout 2023/24, registering eight assists in the process.

However, he came under fire for his displays at times, looking almost certain to leave last summer – even being dubbed a “liability” by the Daily Mirror’s David Anderson – but stayed put at Elland Road, a decision that now looks to be a superb one.

Whilst he’s missed a huge portion of the campaign through injury, when he’s featured on the pitch, he’s constantly caught the eye, scoring once and notching seven assists in just 19 games, which includes a hat-trick of assists in the win over Cardiff City.

His underlying stats also back up how impressive he has been for Farke’s men in their ambitions of securing promotion, undoubtedly up there with some of the very players in the division throughout the year.

However, there may be some cause for concern, with the 28-year-old currently set to leave in the summer with his contract expiring at the end of June.

Regardless of promotion, the club desperately need to tie the former Barça ace down to a new deal at Elland Road, potentially able to make the step back up to the Premier League amid his recent form in the second tier.

Not many people would’ve predicted such a drastic turnaround in his time in Yorkshire, but it’s a credit to Firpo and his commitment to succeed, deserving all the praise that is directed his way at this moment in time.

Ayto can redeem Arsenal’s dreadful January by signing £150m "nightmare"

And just like that, any optimism slowly building around Arsenal has been dashed within a few days.

Mikel Arteta’s side went into the weekend eight points off of Liverpool atop the Premier League table but with a game in hand.

However, Mikel Merino wasn’t able to repeat his goalscoring heroics, and, thanks to a Jarrod Bowen strike, the Gunners fell to a shock 1-0 defeat to West Ham United, made worse by the Reds picking up all three points away to Manchester Cityjust a day later.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta

While there were a lot of problems with Arsenal’s performance, their lack of firepower was once again evident, which only further puts a spotlight on the club’s dreadful January transfer window, which interim Sporting Director Jason Ayto could make up for in the summer by bringing in a genuinely game-changing attacker.

Arsenal's appalling January

In early November last year, amid a rocky run of form for the team, it was announced that then-Sporting Director Edu Gaspar had resigned from his position at Arsenal, which, in truth, came as quite a shock to fans and pundits alike.

The former Invincible had been a key player in the club’s recent resurgence and rebuild under Arteta, so there was plenty of uncertainty over what this meant for the project as a whole and, specifically, how this would impact the January transfer window.

In the Brazilian’s absence, Ayto, the assistant Sporting Director, stepped into the hot seat, and while there have been reports that the higher-ups at the club have been impressed by him, it would be fair to say the supporters have not.

The simple reason for this disconnect between the board and the fanbase is that, despite the squad’s evident need for attacking reinforcements, which was made all the more acute by the recent injury crisis, nobody was signed in the recent window.

Worse yet, there were undoubtedly deals that could be done, as evidenced by Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa’s significant business and then the fact that it appeared as if Ollie Watkins might’ve been attainable in the closing days.

In all, the abject failure to address the club’s dire needs in the last window has obliterated much of the fans’ goodwill that had been built up in recent seasons, and unless Ayto pulls off a miraculous game-changing signing in the summer, he might never win the fans back onside – fortunately, there is one star who could be just that for him.

The game-changing signing Arsenal could pull off

A number of attacking talents have been consistently linked with Arsenal over the last year, such as Nico Williams, Benjamin Sesko and Dušan Vlahović.

However, while all three of those forwards would undoubtedly improve the Gunners’ squad and even the first-team, it would be hard to honestly describe any of them as genuine game-changers who’d be able to come right into the first team and almost single-handedly fire the North Londoners to Premier League or even European glory.

On the other hand, Alexander Isak certainly could and, therefore, would, without doubt, be a truly game-changing addition to Arteta’s squad.

The Newcastle United striker is one of the most exciting forwards in world football and has been consistently touted for a move to the Emirates for quite some time now.

While signing him would be incredibly challenging, reports from late last year revealed that the Toon might be willing to cash in for a whopping £150m.

Now, that is an extraordinary amount of money, but the Swedish international is an extraordinary player, and from what we have seen of him over the last season and a bit, he is likely worth every penny.

For example, in just 40 appearances last term, totalling 2973 minutes, the Solna-born “nightmare,” as dubbed by Alan Shearer, scored 25 goals and provided two assists, which comes out to an average of a goal involvement every 1.48 games, or every 110.11 minutes.

Somehow, the 25-year-old monster, whom Jamie Carragher labelled “the best striker in the Premier League,” has done even better this season and, in just 30 appearances, totalling 2367 minutes, has scored 21 goals and provided five assists, which comes to an average of a goal involvement every 1.15 games, or every 91.03 minutes.

Ultimately, Arsenal have done incredibly well to get back to the top table of English football in recent years, but their lack of business in January has undoubtedly damaged the trust the fans had in the board.

So if they, and especially Ayto, want to win that back in the summer, they have to go big in the transfer market, and they can’t go much bigger than signing Isak.

Ramesh Powar to move away from India women's head coach role

Ramesh Powar’s tenure as head coach of the India women’s team has ended, a little over two months out from the next T20 World Cup in South Africa. India will be without a head coach for the upcoming five-match T20I series at home against Australia. For now, the team’s support staff group will be headed by former India allrounder Hrishikesh Kanitkar, who has formally been handed the position of batting coach. Kanitkar, who was most-recently in charge of a second-string Indian men’s team in similar capacity during their limited-overs tour of New Zealand, has linked up with the women’s squad in Mumbai ahead of the Australia series beginning on December 9.Powar, meanwhile, is set to return to his role as spin-bowling coach at the National Cricket Academy (NCA). In a media release, the BCCI termed Powar’s switch to men’s cricket as part of a “restructuring module”. It’s a position he had previously held at the NCA between 2019 and 2020, before taking over as head coach of the Mumbai men’s team, who he guided to the Vijay Hazare Trophy title in March 2021.For Kanitkar, the role is a step up from his present role as a batting consultant at the NCA. Earlier this year, he was head coach of India’s victorious batch of Under-19s, who became world champions in the Caribbean. His NCA stint aside, Kanitkar has also coached Tamil Nadu, apart from being player-mentor at Rajasthan towards the end of his career. Like Powar, Kanitkar has been an active part of NCA’s redevelopment under former India captain and current India men’s head coach Rahul Dravid. He was with the Indian women’s team as the batting consultant during the tour of Sri Lanka and then the victorious Asia Cup campaign.Powar has had two stints with the women’s team, the most recent of which was a mixed one. Having taken over in May 2021, he oversaw the team’s lead-up to the 2022 World Cup (50-overs), where they crashed out in the group stage with three wins in seven. More recently, though, the team finished silver medalists behind Australia in the Commonwealth Games, before recording their first-ever white-ball series win in England, when they blanked the hosts 3-0 in the ODIs in September. His final series with the team was a victorious one, India storming to their seventh Asia Cup title in October.”I have had an enriching experience in my stint as head coach of the senior women’s team,” Powar was quoted as saying in a BCCI release. “Over the years I have worked closely with some of the stalwarts of the game and upcoming talents of the country.”With my new role at the NCA, I will be looking [to use] my experience [from] over the years to help build talent for the future. I look forward to working in tandem with [NCA head coach] VVS Laxman for the further development of the game and bench strength.”For Kanitkar, the five-match series against Australia will be followed by a tri-series in South Africa, also involving West Indies, in the lead-up to the World Cup.”I see tremendous prospects in this team, and we have a good mix of youth and experience,” Kanitkar said, looking ahead to his new role. “I believe this team is ready for the challenge ahead. We have a few marquee events coming up and it is going to be exciting for the team and myself as batting coach.”

Ornstein: Ipswich Town want to sign £3.5m defender at the top of his game

Ipswich Town are interested in signing a £3.5m World Cup defender who is at the top of his game, according to David Ornstein.

Ipswich Town’s Premier League signings

The Tractor Boys have been doing everything they can to buck the trend and remain in the Premier League after winning back-to-back promotions from League One under Kieran McKenna.

However, as things stand, Ipswich occupy one of the three relegation spots alongside Leicester City and Southampton with their most recent 3-2 defeat coming at Old Trafford to 10-player Man Utd despite a brace from Jaden Philogene.

Ipswich chiefs have backed McKenna in both the summer and January transfer markets, though, bringing in a number of new players and splashing the cash.

Now, attention appears to be on the summer window, and a new target has emerged as Ipswich look to add to their defensive ranks.

Ipswich Town want to sign £3.5m defender, says Ornstein

According to reliable transfer reporter Ornstein of The Athletic, relayed by The Celtic Way, Ipswich Town are keen on signing Celtic defender Alistair Johnston, joining Premier League rivals Fulham in the race for a deal.

“I know Celtic right-back Alistair Johnston is generating attention from clubs in England, with Fulham among his admirers. The Canada international recently signed a new contract at Parkhead and isn’t known to be unhappy – but there was firm interest in January.

“From what I hear, it’s not only Fulham but also Ipswich and others who are looking at him. Johnston was longlisted for the Best FIFA Men’s XI last year, so this is probably no surprise, and I’d expect more suitors to emerge from the Premier League and across Europe in the summer.”

Celtic defender Alistair Johnston.

Johnston made the move to Celtic in January 2023 for an initial £3.5m and has gone from strength to strength at Parkhead, with his Transfermarkt valuation now at a career high €9m.

A Canada international who has represented his country at the World Cup, Johnston is primarily a right-back but can also play as a centre-back or right midfielder.

You’d expect that with the 26-year-old’s growing reputation, Ipswich will need to remain in the top flight to have a chance of signing Johnston, but a deal could be one to keep an eye on over the coming months.
