Trio impressed in Taunton Test and could feature in three ODIs against South Africa

Alice Davidson-Richards has won a recall to England’s ODI squad in the wake of her century on Test debut, while there are maiden call-ups for Issy Wong and Lauren Bell for the 14-woman group to take on South Africa.Davidson-Richards made her only previous ODI appearance more than four years ago, but impressed in the drawn Test at Taunton, where she scored 107 and took 1 for 43 – making her only the second England player, after WG Grace, with a hundred and a wicket on Test debut.Wong and Bell both won their first England caps in the Test, and could now make ODI debuts in the three-match series starting on July 11. England have suggested that they will manage the workload of Wong, 20, but the temptation to throw her in will be great after a display of pace and accuracy in Taunton, where she claimed 3 for 100.Katherine Brunt, who has retired from Test cricket, returns to the group, as does Danni Wyatt. Of the players who featured in England’s run to the World Cup final earlier this year, Anya Shrubsole has retired, Tash Farrant is injured and Freya Davies misses out – named instead among a 13-woman England A squad to play a T20 warm-up against South Africa on Monday.”Although these South Africa ODIs don’t form part of the ICC Women’s Championship, we are at the beginning of a new three-year cycle, which is so exciting,” England head coach, Lisa Keightley, said. “We have to keep looking forward and trying to improve as a team, and we were so delighted with the energy and skill that the four debutants brought in the LV= Insurance Test match.Related

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has voiced a personal transfer request to the Stamford Bridge hierarchy, and in an attempt to grant his wish, they’ve made an approach to sign a marquee star.
Chelsea change transfer plans amid potential January exits
Christopher Nkunku is Bayern Munich’s top transfer target, and it is reliably believed that the France international has agreed personal terms on a move to the Allianz Arena before deadline day on February 3 (Florian Plettenberg).

There have also been credible reports that Chelsea have held initial talks over a swap deal involving Nkunku and Mathys Tel, so it looks as if BlueCo could trade in one French attacker for another if all goes to plan in this regard.
However, it is also believed that Liam Delap remains a key transfer target for Chelsea and another approach was made to his agents recently, so it appears Maresca’s side are in the market for a striker in the event Nkunku does depart for Germany.

Chelsea were thought to be prioritising a centre-back this month, but those plans appear to be changing, as Todd Boehly and co look to ensure that Maresca maintains his strength in depth.
As well as Nkunku, the likes of Renato Veiga, Axel Disasi, Ben Chilwell, Carney Chukwuemeka and Cesare Casadei are all firm contenders to seal exits from the club over these coming weeks.
Maresca has ideas of his own on how to reshape the squad, as Chelsea look to evolve and shift their deadwood.
Chelsea make approach for Mainoo as Maresca makes midfielder demand
As per reliable journalist Simon Phillips, writing via his Substack, Chelsea are still hopeful of potentially tempting Man United star Kobbie Mainoo with a move down south in January.
Despite his status as a Red Devils mainstay and England international, the 19-year-old is on just £20,000-per-week, leading to his camp’s pursuit of fresh terms to better reflect his obvious quality.
However, PSR issues are reportedly complicating United’s efforts to tie him down with a new deal, and this has alerted the likes of Chelsea who could offer him a route out of Old Trafford.
According to Phillips, Chelsea have made an approach to sign Mainoo, opening discussions with the teenager’s agents as Maresca personally asks the club to bring in another midfielder.
That being said, Mainoo’s current stance is a preference to stay at United and there is some optimism on their end that a deal can be agreed – even if a switch to Chelsea isn’t entirely ruled out just yet.
Journalist Miguel Delaney of The Independent has also claimed that Ruben Amorim’s side would want a hefty £100 million sum to let him leave.
It would be fair to say that this season has been tough for Tottenham Hotspur.
The club may still be in three cup competitions at present, but their form in the Premier League has been diabolical, with Wednesday night’s defeat to Arsenal being their 11th of the campaign.
What’s worse is that Ange Postecoglou’s usually ultra-positive side didn’t even offer much in attack and looked bereft of ideas for much of the encounter.
Fortunately, recent reports have linked the club with an incredibly exciting Premier League star who could be their answer to the Gunners’ Bukayo Saka.
Spurs chase Premier League star
According to a recent report from French outlet RMC Sports, Tottenham are one of several clubs interested in Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo.
Brentford's BryanMbeumoin action with Arsenal's Myles Lewis-Skelly and Gabriel Magalhaes
Alongside the Lilywhites, the report has claimed that the Gunners and Manchester United are also incredibly keen on landing the inform winger this month.
However, the story has also revealed that, due to the Bees’ position in the league and successful campaign thus far, it would take a ‘big cheque’ to tempt them into selling, with reports from earlier this month claiming an offer in the region of £50m might do.
It would be a complicated and costly transfer to get over the line, but given Mbeumo’s immense ability, it’s one worth fighting for, especially as there are some apparent similarities between him and Saka.
How Mbeumo could be Spurs' Saka
Now, Spurs fans might not like Saka for understandable partisan reasons, but there is no denying that the Arsenal man is one of the best wingers in world football, let alone the Premier League, as before suffering his hamstring injury, he had racked up a haul of nine goals and 13 assists in just 24 games this season.
Arsenal star Bukayo Saka
So, the fact that Mbeumo shares some similarities with him can only be a good thing, and the first similarity is his productivity.
For example, in just 25 appearances this season, the former Troyes star, whom pundit Dan Bardell recently dubbed “one of the best players in the Premier League,” has found the back of the net on 13 occasions and provided four assists for good measure, which comes out to an average of a goal involvement every 1.47 games.

On top of this ability to change games with a goal or assist, the Cameroonian international shares some physical traits with the Hale Ender.
For example, while the Englishman is three inches taller than the 5 foot 7 Bees star, they are both unassumingly strong and share a low centre of gravity, which helps them manoeuvre with the ball and send opposition full-backs the wrong way when out on the wing.
Moreover, both are left-footed right-wingers, which facilitates their nature to cut in and fire off a shot from just outside the box or from inside when they time their runs just right.
Finally, both players have become the focal points of the respective teams, with the Arsenal ace taking up the mantle in light of a weaker left-side and lack of clinical strikers, while Mbeumo stepped up in the absence of Ivan Toney last season and hasn’t relinquished that spotlight since.
Ultimately, it might cost an arm and a leg to get down this month, but if Spurs want to instantly improve Ange’s attacking options, then they have to sign the Brentford star, as he’s got all the ingredients to explode at a top six side, and maybe even become their answer to Saka.

Looking forward to moving into ‘life after cricket’ – Trent Boult
It’s 10 years since New Zealand have played an ODI in West Indies but they could, depending on final selection, field five players who were part of that team in St Kitts in July 2012.Martin Guptill, Kane Williamson, Tom Latham, Tim Southee and Trent Boult are back as part of this tour – a mark of their longevity and success as international cricketers – as the side gears up for next year’s ODI World Cup which, for some, might be their last global tournament. For Boult there is even a question mark over that after his recent decision to step away from his central contract. Beyond this tour (and the upcoming T20 World Cup which he appears set to play) the criteria around his future selection remains to be decided.Related

Boult’s previous ODIs came in March 2021 – they have been a scarce format for New Zealand until recently which has left them a lot of catch-up series to play over the next few months – but for some, it’s even longer since an appearance in the format.Southee is no longer a first-choice pick in ODIs, but it is still remarkable to think that his last appearance was before the pandemic was a reality – against India in February 2020.Williamson’s most recent outing came just a month later, in the first behind-closed-doors game at the SCG just as sport around the world was being shut down. That is one of just two matches he has played since the 2019 World Cup final owing to injury and rotation.Kane Williamson has not played an ODI since March 2020•Getty Images
Barring Matt Henry’s injury which has ended his tour, New Zealand are at full strength for the series having explored their depth on the recent tour of Europe and over the last couple of years. A number of players have emerged during that time and some find themselves on this tour: opening batter Finn Allen, allrounder Michael Bracewell who produced some stunning performances in Europe, and pace bowler Ben Sears who has replaced Henry.”Sears [has] that bit of extra pace which is always nice to have in your side. Finn who has done really well in the Super Smash and over in Europe he played really well,” Latham said. “Both those guys are youthful and play an exciting brand of cricket.”With spin expected to play a significant part, there may only be room for two frontline quicks in New Zealand’s XI.”It will be interesting to see what the surfaces are like,” Latham said. “Looking at some of the scores in recent times here in one-day cricket they do vary a little bit so sure spin will play a part but we also have a bit of pace in our squad as well.”Having played just three of their World Cup Super League series, New Zealand have more ODI cricket than most between now and next March. After this series they head to Cairns in northern Australia in early September and after the T20 World Cup host India before heading to Pakistan. They wrap up their home season against Sri Lanka.”With the big picture of the World Cup not too far away so for us it’s about getting used to different conditions,” Latham said. “Somewhere here like West Indies, it might be similar to what we are faced with in India.”Any time you get the opportunity to play on different surfaces to home it’s important you take all the learnings and try to adapt the best you can. That’s something our squad has done really well of late, we’ve played over in Europe and here with the T20s so it’s all about trying to adapt as quickly as you can.”New Zealand ODI squad Kane Williamson, Finn Allen, Trent Boult, Michael Bracewell, Devon Conway, Lockie Ferguson, Martin Guptill Tom Latham, Daryl Mitchell, James Neesham, Glenn Phillips, Mitchell Santner, Ben Sears, Ish Sodhi, Tim Southee

Tom Taylor claimed 5 for 49.The declaration set up an exciting finish in fading light from which Northants emerged victorious to take 23 points to Gloucestershire’s five. The home side batted from the start of the day with an application notably absent from the latter stages of their first innings. It was van Buuren who set the tone, defending solidly against accurate deliveries, while being merciless on anything short.Ryan Higgins offered staunch support as the pair added 53 to the overnight score before falling for 17 to a brilliant one-handed slip catch by Young, diving low to his left, off Taylor. The wicket did nothing to stem van Buuren’s growing momentum and he went to fifty with three successive fours off Rob Keogh, having faced 87 balls.Related

Simon Kerrigan beat the outside edge on several occasions, but he and Keogh did not get the extravagant turn Gloucestershire must have feared on the dry final day wicket.Zafar was typically positive, hitting successive fours when off-spinner Keogh switched to the Chapel End and cutting James Sales for six over point.By lunch, he and van Buuren had added 58 and Gloucestershire led by 85. A further 25 were added before Zafar, on 38, edged the second new ball through to wicketkeeper Lewis McManus, Jack White being the successful bowler. With Gloucestershire 273 for 7, Young dropped Tom Price at second slip off Ben Sanderson before he had scored.Price went on to contribute a stylish 39 to a stand of 86 with van Buuren, who brought up his first hundred since taking on the Gloucestershire captaincy at the start of the season with a pulled four off Sanderson. He had faced 155 balls.Taylor grabbed his fourth and fifth wickets with successive balls as Price and Zak Chappell skied catches into the off side and the declaration soon followed, tea being taken between innings.Despite losing Emilio Gay, caught behind off David Payne, with only nine on the board, Northants were soon breezing towards their target as Rickelton, fresh from 95 in the first innings, and Young went on the attack.By the end of the tenth over, they had taken the score to 68 and Rickelton then smashed two sixes in an over off Zafar to go to a sparkling half-century off 38 balls. The century stand occupied just 69 deliveries, but then Rickelton fell lbw to a full ball from Zak Chappell and it was 132 for 3 when Young was stumped advancing down the pitch to Zahar.Graeme van Buuren steers behind point•Getty Images
With the light closing in, Zafar had Keogh stumped sweeping and pinned Luke Procter lbw in a spell from the Chapel End that saw him extract turn and lift. But McManus (30) and James Sales (17) made sure of a Northants victory with a stand of 47. Both departed to Zafar at the death and Jack White was caught trying to make the winning hit, but by then team-mates were celebrating and Kerrigan duly hit the winning boundary.”What an incredible game of cricket,” John Sadler, Northants’ coach, said. “All credit to Gloucestershire, who could have settled for a draw, but set up a great finish. I thought van Buuren’s century on a turning pitch was a fantastic effort.”We were always intent on going for the runs. Will Young and Ryan Rickelton showed they are world-class and how cool were Lewis McManus and young James Sales at the end? At times we looked in total control and at others we were under pressure. But we hung in there and got the result at the end of a fantastic day.”Van Buuren said: “I am so proud of my team. We have put in a tremendous amount of effort over four days in a game that was a fantastic advert for cricket and the County Championship First Division.”It has been a lean season for me, so I was delighted to get some runs for the team. I don’t think there is anything I would have done differently. One or two key moments didn’t go our way.”Zafar Gohar is a class act. The light was an issue at the end, but both teams wanted to stay out there and all credit to the players and umpires for completing a wonderful match.”
In what has been an incredibly busy January transfer window so far, Manchester City have now reportedly reached an agreement to sign another young defender after Vitor Reis and Abdukodir Khusanov.
Man City transfer news
It was clear ahead of the transfer window that Manchester City needed to spend following their toughest run of form under Pep Guardiola. Now, 21 days into the window, we’ve got our answer as to how they were planning on spending that money, welcoming Khusanov and Reis alongside Eintracht Frankfurt star Omar Marmoush in a deal worth a reported €75m (£63m) this month.
Speaking to the club website after putting pen to paper, Khusanov said: “I’m absolutely delighted to be joining Manchester City, a club that I have enjoyed watching for a long time.
“This squad is full of the best players in the world, and I can’t wait to meet them and play alongside them. And of course Pep Guardiola is one of the greatest coaches ever and I am so excited to learn from him and improve my game even more.
“This is a very proud moment for me and my family to be joining a great Club like Manchester City and I’m more than ready for this challenge.”

Those at The Etihad have wasted no time before shifting their focus towards further reinforcements, however. According to Fabrizio Romano, Manchester City have now reached a verbal agreement to sign Juma Bah from Real Valladolid.
The young defender, should the deal cross the line, could reportedly head straight on loan to RC Lens who Manchester City have an excellent relationship with following their deal to sign Khusanov. In one swoop, Lens would have their Khusanov replacement and City would have another future star.
"Promising" Bah is another one for the future
Whilst there may be some concern that Manchester City have not gone in pursuit of instant improvements this month, what they have done is prepare for the future in what has been intelligent business. Reis, Khusanov and now Bah represent players who have looked destined to step into the spotlight and City have acted before their price tags reflect that.
Juma Bah for Real Valladolid.
Described as a “promising” defender by Rising Star XI, 18-year-old Bah has already made his mark on senior football for Real Valladolid, becoming a key part of their La Liga side in the current campaign. Now, however, he could find himself on his way to Manchester City and now on loan to Ligue 1 side Lens in two moves full of potential.
Suddenly, an ageing backline full of options such as John Stones, Kyle Walker and Nathan Ake has youthful exuberance to it. Reis, Khusanov and Bah could be the future of City’s backline and even if they’re not destined to make an instant impact on Guardiola’s side, there’s no doubt that their time will come as is the case for most stars at The Etihad.
