Move over Hagi: Rangers star who won 9 duels was real hero

Glasgow Rangers followed up on their European success with a 1-0 win over St. Johnstone away from Ibrox in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday.

The Scottish giants swept OCG Nice aside with relative ease in the Europa League on Thursday, winning 4-1 in France, and made sure that they did not get too complacent when back in domestic action.

Whilst it was not a brilliant performance from Philippe Clement’s side, the Light Blues did enough to secure all three points and were good value for it, with 17 shots to the host’s four.

An own goal from midfielder Jason Holt in the second half proved to be the only goal of the game, after Nedim Bajrami, Vaclav Cerny, and Hamza Igamane all flirted with the back of the net in the opening 45.

A win and a clean sheet, however, is the headline news and it should be taken as a positive, as the Gers did not allow the host to gain control at any point in the match.

Another positive from the game was the performance of the returning Ianis Hagi, who was selected from the start as the number ten in the 4-2-3-1 set-up.

Ianis Hagi's impressive showing

The Romania international started in the Premiership for the first time since the 27th May 2023 against St Mirren in a 3-0 win under Michael Beale.

After returning from his loan with Alaves last season, Hagi was initially banished to the B team due to a contractual issue that would have seen his wages rise if he had hit a certain number of games.

The Daily Record reported that the situation was then resolved after several senior players and board members pushed for him to be reintroduced, and the former Genk star has since been brought back into the squad after his contract issue was ironed out behind the scenes.

Hagi made his first start of the season, and his fourth appearance, against St. Johnstone on Sunday and caught the eye with an impressive and energetic display.

The headline of his performance was his ‘assist’ for the winning goal. It does not count as an official assist for the forward but it was his fantastic volleyed cross to the back post that, essentially, forced Holt to score an own goal to prevent James Tavernier from tapping into an empty net.

As you can see in the table above, Hagi was constantly looking to make something happen at the top end of the pitch with three shots taken and two chances created, along with his involvement in the winning goal.

He did lose possession 19 times in total throughout the game but that was because the attacking midfielder was taking risks in order to progress play for the team, which inevitably led to some giveaways.

Whilst Hagi was one of the stars of the show for the Ibrox giants on Sunday, the real hero for Clement was central midfielder Nicolas Raskin.

Nicolas Raskin's performance against St Johnstone

The Belgian dynamo was selected alongside Connor Barron in the middle of the park for the Light Blues and set the tone for his side early in the match with his energy.

Raskin was constantly pushing forward to put pressure on the St. Johnstone players when they had the ball, either to make a challenge, to force them backwards, or to force them into making a mistake in possession.

His pressing work, alongside the likes of Igamane, Hagi, and Barron, pinned the home team back and helped Rangers to enjoy 61% of the possession in the match.

He also won 75% of his duels on the ground and in the air combined, as the Belgian midfielder was able to dominate the opposition out of possession to consistently win the ball back.

The former Standard Liege star, who made four tackles, was the real hero for Clement because he combined quality and reliability in possession with strength, energy, and desire off the ball, to dominate the game.

Nicolas Raskin's form this season

It was just the latest in a long line of strong performances from the January 2023 signing, who has emerged as a key player for the Belgian head coach in midfield.

After missing out through injury at the start of the campaign, Raskin has started seven of his ten appearances in the Premiership and three of his five outings in the Europa League this term.

The 23-year-old battler has yet to contribute with a goal or an assist to directly influence matches in the final third, but that is because he is doing the bulk of his work in deeper areas of the pitch – picking the ball up off the back four and progressing it to the attacking players.

As was the case against St. Johnstone, Raskin picks up positions to receive passes from the centre-backs and then looks to find the wingers or the number ten to spark attacks for his side.

As you can see in the table above, the Belgian ace has provided consistent quality in his actions in and out of possession for the Scottish giants in the top-flight this season.

He has been a reliable operator defensively for the Light Blues, winning the majority of his duels on the ground and in the air, and that allows him to press high and compete with opposition players to win the ball back.

Clement will now be hoping that the Rangers gem can continue with his current performance level for the rest of the season, to help the club to compete for trophies.

Sunil Narine will make his first appearance in the Vitality T20 Blast after signing for Surrey. Narine, who will head to London after the completion of his stint at the IPL, played for the Oval-based Invincibles during last year’s Hundred.Narine, the West Indies spinner, is one of the most-successful T20 players in the game, having featured in most of the major leagues around the world. He helped West Indies to lift the 2012 World T20, has twice been an IPL winner with Kolkata Knight Riders, and most recently was Player of the Match in the final as Comilla Victorians won the BPL.Related

As well as being a prolific wicket-taker, he has enjoyed great success when pushed up the order as a pinch-slogging batter.”We’re very pleased Sunil will be joining us for this year’s Vitality Blast,” Surrey’s director of cricket, Alec Stewart, said. “His unique skills as a bowler and ability to bat anywhere in the order make him a very exciting proposition in any T20 side.”As a proven winner in this format, his experience in internationals and leagues around the world will be an invaluable asset. I look forward to seeing him perform in a Surrey shirt this summer.”Narine, who was released by Oval Invincibles but could still be re-signed during this month’s draft, will take the first of Surrey’s two overseas slots for the Blast. Surrey begin their campaign at home to Glamorgan on May 27, two days before the IPL final, with Narine expected to be available throughout following his arrival from India.”I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to play for Surrey in the Vitality Blast this year; one of the few competitions around the world I’ve not experienced in my career,” Narine said.”The stint I enjoyed with Oval Invincibles in 2021 gave me a taste of how unique playing in front of a packed Kia Oval crowd really is. My aim is to entertain as much as possible this year and hopefully ensure the club challenges for the trophy.”Surrey missed out on the knockout stages of the Blast last year, having been beaten finalists in 2020.

Lalit Yadav and Axar Patel help Delhi Capitals pull off coup

Kuldeep Yadav was adjudged Player of the Match for his 3 for 18, while Ishan Kishan’s 81* went in vain

Axar Patel and Lalit Yadav celebrate after dragging Delhi Capitals to an unlikely win•BCCI

Lalit Yadav and Axar Patel stunned Mumbai Indians as Delhi Capitals pulled off a come-from-behind four-wicket win at the Brabourne Stadium on Sunday.Chasing 178, Capitals were tottering at 72 for 5 after 9.4 overs. When Basil Thampi removed Shardul Thakur in the 14th over, the target was still 74 runs away with only 6.4 overs left. But Lalit and Axar smashed 75 off 30 balls in an unbroken sixth-wicket stand and wrapped up the game with ten balls to spare. After a slow start, Lalit finished on 48 off 38 balls, while Axar struck 38 off just 17.Earlier, Kuldeep Yadav’s 3 for 18 had rocked Mumbai Indians after they had made a strong start but Ishan Kishan stayed put and struck an unbeaten 81 off 48 balls. His knock, featuring 11 fours and two sixes, ensured Mumbai posted a challenging 177 for 5. It even looked like a winning total for most of Capitals’ innings before Lalit and Axar snatched the game away.A power-packed powerplay
There was a tinge of green on the surface, and Thakur began with two slips against Rohit Sharma. But the third ball of his opening over drifted down the leg side, and Rohit clipped it to the fine-leg boundary. Three balls later, Thakur bowled full outside off and Rohit launched him over wide long-off for six. This was a sign of things to come. On a pitch that offered little for the bowlers, Rohit and Kishan took full advantage of Capitals’ wayward bowling as their seamers bowled either too full or too short. In the first five overs, Rohit and Kishan hit five fours and three sixes.Mumbai Indians get over-rate fine

The IPL has said in a statement that Mumbai Indians were fined for maintaining a slow over rate against Delhi Capitals, though only the extent of captain Rohit Sharma’s fine was specified. “As it was the team’s first offence of the season, under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offences, Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma was fined Rs 12 lakhs [USD 15,700 approx],” the statement said.

Khaleel Ahmed started the sixth over with three dots to Rohit. Off the fourth ball, Rohit, premeditatedly moved towards off stump to play the lap shot. He ended up hitting it to short fine leg but Thakur put it down. Rohit danced down the track next ball and smashed Khaleel through the covers for four, bringing up the team’s fifty. Mumbai finished the powerplay at 53 for no loss.Kuldeep strikes back
Kuldeep hasn’t been in the best of form in the last three years or so, slipping down the pecking order of selection for India and struggling to find a place in the Kolkata Knight Riders XI. But where he had to compete with Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy at Knight Riders, he might be likelier to get game time at Capitals, his new franchise. And he ensured as much with his performance on Sunday.Rohit and Kishan had added 67 in 8.2 overs when Kuldeep dismissed Rohit. The ball was just short of a good length; Rohit couldn’t execute the pull shot perfectly and found deep midwicket. Anmolpreet Singh then struggled to read Kuldeep and sliced one to long-off to give him his second wicket. With two left-handers, Kishan and Tilak Varma, in the middle, Pant sneaked in two overs of Lalit Yadav’s offspin. When Kieron Pollard came to the crease, Pant brought Kuldeep back for his final over. He didn’t disappoint his captain and snared Pollard with another short-of-good-length delivery. It was pulled powerfully but Tim Seifert leapt to his left at forward square leg and plucked it with both hands. That left Mumbai 122 for 4 in 15.5 overs.Ishan Kishan goes big over midwicket•BCCI

Kishan powers Mumbai to formidable total
While Mumbai kept losing regular wickets at one end, Kishan stayed firm at the other. He brought up his half-century in 34 balls, with a six off Axar Patel. Two balls later he swatted him wide of long-off for four more.Khaleel Ahmed was the next to bear the brunt of Kishan’s blitz. In the 19th over, he hit him for two fours in three balls, which could have been three in three if not for a flying effort by Seifert at deep square leg. Thakur went for 18 in the final over, with Daniel Sams hitting a six and Kishan two successive fours to power Mumbai to a formidable total.Seifert flickers briefly
Getting on strike midway through the first over of the chase, Seifert got off the blocks with back-to-back fours off Sams, a crisp cover-drive followed by a brutal pull. He played an even better shot in the second over, punching a full delivery from Jasprit Bumrah over the bowler’s head. Two balls later, Bumrah slipped in a slower ball. This time Seifert went over wide mid-off, and picked up his fourth boundary in just eight balls.Prithvi Shaw joined in the fun by pulling Basil Thampi for a six over deep midwicket, but things soon went south for Capitals.Bowling the fourth over, M Ashwin got Seifert to edge a fast legbreak. But Aryan Juyal, substituting for Kishan who had gone for a scan after taking a hit to the toe while batting, dropped the catch. But Ashwin had his man off the next ball, this time scything an even faster googly through Seifert’s defence. Two balls later, Mandeep Singh hit a full-toss straight to mid-on.When Tymal Mills had Pant top-edging a short ball to third man in the fifth over, Capitals were wobbling at 32 for 3 .Delhi Capitals’ win probability had sunk to 5.12 before Lalit Yadav and Axar Patel changed the script•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Thampi rocks Capitals further
Shaw kept Capitals in the hunt and took them to 70 for 3 after nine overs, taking on Mills and Sams in the process. In the tenth over, he attempted another pull against Thampi but got only a top-edge and Kishan, who was back behind the stumps by now, held on to a swirling skier. Two balls later, Rovman Powell pulled Thampi straight to deep square leg. At 72 for 5, it looked like the game was over.Lalit and Axar script improbable win
With all seemingly lost, Thakur hit Bumrah for three fours in the 11th over. But soon after, he too top-edged a pull and fell for an 11-ball 22. Lalit and Axar brought the equation down to 56 required from 30 balls. Axar then dispatched Bumrah over long-on and Lalit crashed him behind point in a 15-run over.Off the first ball of the 17th over, Thampi produced a chance but Tim David put down a sitter at long-on to give Axar a life. To rub salt into the wound, Axar hit him for a four three balls later, and the final ball of the over went for four leg-byes.Capitals still needed 28 off the last three overs, and even though he had had an underwhelming day, Bumrah was to bowl one of them. Sams bowled the 18th over, and Axar and Lalit feasted on his slower balls. They hit him for three sixes and a four, ransacking 24 off the over. When Bumrah came for the 19th over, Capitals need just four. After a single to Lalit, Bumrah bowled one down the leg side, and Axar duly clipped him to the fine leg boundary to seal the match.

Their own Haaland: Man Utd eyeing "superstar" Rashford upgrade in January

Ruben Amorim fired his first statement win as Manchester United boss with a stunning late comeback to defeat rivals Manchester City 2-1 at the Etihad.

A late penalty from Bruno Fernandes looked to have snatched a draw for Man United before Amad Diallo stole in front of goalkeeper Ederson to cooly slot home from Lisandro Martínez’s clip in behind the City defence.

The result may not have lifted United in the Premier League table but it has certainly lifted the mood and optimism at Old Trafford and was the club’s second consecutive victory following a 2-1 win at Plzen in the Europa League.

However, a huge talking point before the Manchester derby was the omission of striker Marcus Rashford from the matchday squad altogether. It seems Rashford’s days at United could be coming to an end and all eyes now turn to how Amorim will replace the forward – an area that United have been needing reinforcement in.

Rashford replacement being lined up by Man United

Rasmus Hojlund has struggled to improve on his first season in English football scoring just two goals in the Premier League so far, whilst fellow striker Joshua Zirkzee has only scored three goals in his Premier League appearances.

Many expected Rashford to fill the striker void upon the arrival of new boss Ruben Amorim yet the Englishman himself has struggled for form this season with only four goals to his name – one of those coming in Amorim’s first game in charge against Ipswich.

However, Rashford did not start United’s huge game against Arsenal and then was left out of the matchday squad completely against local rivals Manchester City. This has led to question marks over his future under the new manager and it seems Man United are on the hunt for a replacement.

According to CaughtOffside, Man United are trying to beat Chelsea to the signing of striker Victor Osimhen, who is currently on loan at Galatasaray from Italian giants Napoli. It’s said that contact has been established to explore the initial conditions of a move.

Osimhen – who has reportedly emerged as the Red Devils’ top target – has sparked interest from a number of clubs, but it seems United are interested in bringing the Nigerian striker to Old Trafford in January, seemingly paving the way for the departure of Rashford.

It won’t be an easy deal for United to secure, however with a £74m release clause, but Osimhen is a player who would add a much-needed focal point to United’s attack and has been described recently by journalist Colin Millar on X as a ‘superstar.’

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Osimhen would be an upgrade on current forward options

Osimhen has enjoyed a fine start to his career at Galatasaray, scoring seven and creating three goals in just nine appearances for the Turkish outfit so far this season.

However, it was during his time at Napoli that the attacker really made his name as one of Europe’s hottest strikers, amassing an incredible 76 goals in just 133 appearances for the club and firing the Naples side to the Serie A title in 2023.

Many envious eyes at Old Trafford have been on Erling Haaland in recent seasons however, Osimhen could be United’s own version of the Norwegian powerhouse. Osimhen’s goalscoring record speaks for itself, but his powerful frame and ability to hold the ball up makes for an intimidating figure for defenders to come up against – something all elite Premier League strikers possess.

So, should Man United manage to secure the services of Osimhen, it would present a huge upgrade on their current attacking options of Rashford, Hojlund and Zirkzee.

Not only does Osimhen score more goals than United’s current attacking options but he also creates more with an average of 1.37 goals and assists per 90 minutes. The Nigerian has more attempts than Rashford, Zirkzee and Hojlund with 6.06 shots per game and 2.34 of those being on target.

It isn’t just in front of goal where Osimhen would improve the Red Devils, with 14 fouls drawn, the Galatasaray man has proven to be a physical target that teams can build their attacks from, something United have desperately missed in recent seasons since the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo.

Radu Dragusin up against Victor Osimhen for Genoa.

Whether a deal can be struck remains to be seen but with Rashford seemingly out in the cold and Zirkzee and Hojlund not firing on all cylinders, Osimhen seems a perfect solution for United to continue climbing the league table.

Clement could have his own Matt O’Riley in "exciting" Rangers star

Glasgow Rangers enjoyed a great night at Ibrox on Thursday by holding Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur to a draw in the Europa League.

It was Ange Postecoglou’s first return to Glasgow since moving on from Celtic, who he won two Scottish Premiership titles with, in the summer of 2023.

Rangers ended the match with more shots, more ‘big chances’ created, and more xG but failed to come away with all three points, despite an impressive performance.

The Light Blues are now nine matches unbeaten in all competitions and have hit form at a good time, ahead of the League Cup final clash with Celtic on Sunday at Hampden Park.

However, a poor opening few months of the season has left the Scottish giants 11 points adrift of their Glasgow rivals in the race to win the title, with three losses in the division so far.

Celtic have won 14 of their 15 Premiership matches after they were able to strengthen their squad in the summer transfer window, having banked a hefty amount of cash through the sale of Matt O’Riley.

How much Celtic sold Matt O'Riley for

Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion swooped in to sign the Denmark international for a reported Scottish record transfer fee of more than £25m, breaking the record set by Jota’s £25m switch to Al-Ittihad in the summer of 2023.

This means that Celtic had huge sales in back-to-back summer windows to fund their own incoming business to make their squad stronger across the board, despite losing a couple of key performers.

O’Riley attracted significant interest in his services because of his sensational form in the Premiership for the Hoops during the 2023/24 campaign, with his ability as a scorer and a creator of goals helping him to standout in the division.

As you can see in the table above, the English-born magician had an impressive, but not unbelievable, first full season at Parkhead before emerging as their star man last season.

He dominated games and was a match-winner for Celtic on a regular basis, because of his ability to score and create goals, and that helped them to earn more than £25m from his sale.

That allowed the Hoops to sign Auston Trusty for £6m, Adam Idah for £9.5m, and Arne Engels for a club-record £11m, among several other deals.

Meanwhile, per Transfermarkt, Rangers did not sign a player for more than €5m (£4.1m) after their biggest summer sale was Sam Lammers’ £4m move to FC Twente.

Their lack of big money sales meant that they could not spend the kind of money that Celtic were able to, as Nils Koppen had to invest in younger, cheaper, talent, with the hope that they will develop into high-value assets – like O’Riley.

Rangers' promising summer signings

The Belgian recruitment chief, who is now the club’s technical director, brought in eight players to Ibrox on permanent deals, along with three loans, and five of those eight arrivals are aged 22 or under.

Connor Barron was snapped up from Aberdeen after his contract with the Scottish side expired at the end of last season and the 21-year-old ace has enjoyed a strong start to life in Glasgow.

He has made 26 appearances in all competitions and has started 13 of the club’s 15 matches in the Premiership, which shows that Philippe Clement already trusts the Scotland U21 international.

Another impressive young recruit from Koppen’s work in the summer is Brazilian left-back Jefte, who has emerged as a first-choice option for Rangers at the age of 20.

The promising full-back, who turns 21 later this month, has started 17 matches across the Premiership and the Europa League, and caught the eye with his solid form.

As you can see in the table above, Jefte has offered a strong defensive presence at the back, with 3.7 tackles and interceptions per game without being dribbled past regularly.

However, summer recruit Hamza Igamane is the player who Clement could hit the jackpot with as his answer to Matt O’Riley, given his impressive form of late.

Why Hamza Igamane could be Clement's Matt O'Riley

The Scottish giants swooped to sign the versatile forward from Moroccan side FAR Rabat in the summer and his market valuation on Transfermarkt at the time of his move was just €1m (£829k).

After around five months at Ibrox, that valuation has already shot up to €2.5m (£2m) to reflect his superb form in recent weeks for Clement’s side.

The 22-year-old star, who scored against Spurs on Thursday night, has produced six goals and one assist in 16 appearances in all competitions for Rangers so far this season.

Five of those goals and his one assist came in his last five appearances for the club, as he struggled in his first 11 matches because the youngster needed time to adapt after leaving Morocco for the first time in his career.

As you can see in the table above, Igamane has been particularly impressive in the Europa League for Rangers with a return of five goal contributions in two starts in the competition.

He has proven himself on the European stage and his form of late suggests that the forward, who can play on the left or through the middle, is starting to thrive domestically as well.

Igamane, who was dubbed an “exciting young talent” by Koppen, is a dynamic attacker who can hold off defenders, dribble past opponets, create chances, and score goals, as illustrated by his form in the Europa League, and his market value is soaring as a result of his performances.

Rangers are reportedly interested in signing the exciting playmaker in January.

If the 22-year-old whiz can continue to shine and develop with more experience under his belt then he could emerge as a high-value asset for Rangers who they later sell on for big money to fund their own summer spending spree, akin to the one Celtic had after selling O’Riley.
