Having been knocked out of the Carabao Cup on penalties against Brentford, Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl compiled his side’s misery with the news that one player is now expected to miss months of action through injury.

If they are to secure victory against Watford, however, then they will have to do so without one player who has been dealt a frustrating blow. As confirmed by Rohl, Akin Famewo is now set to miss months of action through an injury sustained in the first-half against Portsmouth last time out in the Championship.

Rohl revealed the news after his side’s exit from the Carabao Cup, telling The Star: “No, it is not good. We speak about months at the moment. It is a big one.”

After starting the last eight Sheffield Wednesday games, there’s no doubt that Famewo will prove to be a big miss as the fixtures begin to come thick and fast in the festive period. The Owls must simply hope to find viable solutions within their squad now that they’re without not one but two central defenders.

Injury to "strong" Famewo comes at the worst time

Just when he was beginning to make the centre-back role his to lose, Famewo’s injury has come at the worst time. The Sheffield Wednesday star will be desperately hoping to focus on recovery and race back to full fitness as soon as possible before reclaiming his place. At 25 years old, the former Norwich City man finally looked on course to reach his best in recent weeks and hit the type of form that earned the praise of former manager Xisco Munoz.

Munoz said via The Star in 2023: “I don’t really see him as a left-back or not, but he is an animal. He was our best player in the duels… He is strong, he plays forward, he understands the situations, and he is one of the guys who is closest to what the Championship demands.

“If you had asked me five weeks ago if Akin could play this football I would have said no. I’m sure you were thinking that too. But you can leave him one against one with a guarantee he will win his duels.”

Now, Rohl has been left to cope without one of his most consistent defenders, starting this weekend against Watford.

The 22-year-old left-back is considered one of the most exciting players in Sweden’s top division and has attracted the interest of Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal as a result.

All three clubs need a left-back in an ideal scenario for Svensson, with Arsenal’s only natural option being Oleksandr Zinchenko, Manchester United forced to rely on the injury-prone Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia and Liverpool left with an ageing Robertson. With quite the decision to make, Svensson should be one to watch.

Svensson among options to replace Robertson

If transfer rumours are anything to go by, then Liverpool are certainly preparing to replace Robertson sooner rather than later. The likes of Milos Kerkez have already been linked with a move and the Bournemouth defender has now seemingly been joined by Svensson on Slot’s list of options. The 22-year-old would be leaving his home country of Sweden at the perfect time, given how he has established himself whilst having room to develop even further.

No matter who comes in, it doesn’t seem as though Robertson will give up his place without a fight, however, having recently said via ESPN: “Last couple of games I’ve been on the bench and I got doubters for the first time in a long time, first time at this club. So, whether it’s Svensson, Kerkez or another option, Slot looks set to have a positive selection headache at left-back when next summer arrives.

Former Zimbabwe captain Andy Flower has been appointed the head coach of the yet-to-be-named Lucknow IPL franchise. Flower is the first appointment on the coaching staff by the Lucknow franchise, which was bought by Indian business conglomerate RP Sanjiv Goenka Group (RPSG) in August for nearly USD 1 billion.Sanjiv Goenka, RPSG’s owner, told ESPNcricinfo that Flower’s contract is “longer”, although he didn’t specify the exact duration. Flower is no newcomer to the IPL. He served as the assistant coach for two seasons at Punjab Kings from 2020. Flower’s high pedigree as a coach across formats is well-known: he was at the helm when England dominated Test cricket and were No.1 on the rankings about a decade ago as well as when Paul Collingwood’s team won the 2010 World T20, England’s maiden ICC trophy.After serving in various coaching roles for 12 years with the ECB, Flower took the plunge into franchise cricket in 2019 where he has had a successful run so far. He was head coach at Multan Sultans who won their maiden PSL title earlier this year. He also led St Lucia Kings to two CPL finals in 2020 and 2021. Flower’s latest international assignment was as a consultant with Afghanistan at the T20 World Cup.Flower might have cut his teeth as an international coach using techniques from the last century, but he has kept an open mind and adapted quickly to the new age. But you can never forget that you’re dealing with human beings. Enzo Maresca has enjoyed a solid start to life as Chelsea boss, only losing twice in their first 11 matches of the 2024/25 Premier League campaign.

The Blues have only tasted defeat against Manchester City and Liverpool, sitting third in the table on 19 points – but remain nine points off Arne Slot’s side, who occupy the top spot after the third international break.

The German international scored nine times during his opening year in the capital, only finding the net once in Europe, but that would be his biggest goal during his time at Chelsea, scoring the only goal in the Champions League final against Manchester City back at the end of 2020/21.

However, a handful of years on, he now plays his trade for London rivals Arsenal, after joining the Gunners in a £65m deal last summer – aiming to bolster Mikel Arteta’s ranks.

The transfer makes him the second most expensive departure in Chelsea history, but the club may currently have their own version of a £100m star who was of interest to Maresca this summer.

Chelsea’s £100m star in the making

Over the summer, Chelsea were on the lookout for a new striker, which led to Newcastle United talisman Alexander Isak being linked with a transfer to the Bridge.

However, despite the interest, the £100m valuation from Eddie Howe’s side put the Blues off a potential move for the Swede, with the Italian sticking with Nicolas Jackson as his primary option in the final third.

It’s a decision that appears to have been a blessing in disguise, with the Senegalese international enjoying his spell as a regular starter this campaign – being ranked as a similar player to Isak by FBref after his displays in the Premier League.

The “extraordinary” Jackson, as dubbed by talent scout Jacek Kulig, has outscored the Magpies’ talent, whilst achieving a higher shot-on-target accuracy rate than his fellow striker.

Jackson has also completed more take-ons whilst also matching Isak for his pass accuracy, showcasing how much his all-round game has developed this season – undoubtedly benefiting from the faith shown in him by Maresca this season.

At the age of just 23, the former Villarreal ace has the opportunity to develop even further and become a real crucial player in the Maresca era at the Bridge, possibly preventing any big-money additions in the centre-forward position.

Many fans craved that big-money signing over the summer, but Jackson has proven that he has the skill set to be a success in England’s top flight and be the main man for the club as a focal point.

Like for Isak, a £100m price tag will surely soon be coming his way…
