Jota & Mac Allister dropped in predicted Liverpool line-up vs AC Milan

Let’s just put it behind us now, shall we? Yes, Liverpool lost at home against Nottingham Forest, and yes, it was an insipid and disjointed display that was a far cry from the slick and stylish football that has been on show throughout the first month of Arne Slot’s reign.

But Slot’s Liverpool won’t be built in a day. It will take time to get things up and running at the level he desires. We’d do well to remember that. The Dutchman might have inherited an elite-class squad but Liverpool weren’t exactly without their flaws last season, were they?

Anyway, moving forward. AC Milan present the Premier League side with quite the stern test to start their Champions League campaign, with Europe’s elite club competition’s opening phase now restructured in a slightly convoluted league format before returning to the familiar territory of the knockout run.

Liverpool missed out on top four the season before last and will be desperate to start with conviction, but it won’t be easy, with the Serie A side blowing Venezia away at the weekend.

Having scarcely made changes as Liverpool boss so far, you’d think that Slot would shuffle his pack now, with the games coming thick and fast, and we reckon that four changes could be made…

1 GK – Alisson

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson.

The big Brazilian’s net was breached for the first time on Saturday, but he kept clean sheets across each of Liverpool’s three opening fixtures and has a save percentage of 90% so far this season, as per Sofascore.

Alisson loves a Champions League night (especially against Italian opposition) and will probably have to pop up with a big save at some point.

2 RB – Trent Alexander-Arnold

Trent Alexander-Arnold vs Man United

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s uncertain future rumbles on and it’s starting to get a bit worrying. He has to sign the contract. Liverpool’s homegrown superstar is just so good, with a celestial range of passing and an influential aura that lifts his teammates.

Milan’s high-pressing surges could topple against the defence-splitting brilliance of this man.

3 CB – Jarell Quansah

Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah.

Jarell Quansah has not played for Liverpool since being hooked at halftime on the opening day of the season, with Slot frustrated by Liverpool’s lack of control and duel success at Portman Road.

The titan is still one of the most exciting young defenders around and will surely earn a nice string of minutes given Liverpool’s congested run of upcoming fixtures. It’ll be a tough one but he has the mettle to pass the San Siro test.

4 CB – Virgil van Dijk

Virgil van Dijk was not a happy man after Liverpool’s shock defeat. The captain and colossus condemned the “unacceptable” performance but urged calmness and rallied his troops.

He’s one of the most aerially dominant defenders of all time and will be crucial against Milan’s high press, though his surgical passing could be key to unlocking the hosts’ stretched lines when on the charge.

5 LB – Andy Robertson

Andy Robertson and Arne Slot

Candidly, there was a lack of synergy down Liverpool’s left flank on Saturday. Andy Robertson was bruised by Ryan Yates and failed to win a single duel or even attempt a dribble, as per Sofascore. So not his finest hour.

He should start again though. Robertson has made 51 appearances in the Champions League, and his experienced head (and feet) will bear dividends… we hope.

6 CM – Ryan Gravenberch

One of the better performers last time out. If Liverpool held a most improved award after one month of a campaign, Ryan Gravenberch would take the cake greedily.

Slot recognised Gravenberch’s potential in a deep-lying midfield position and he is thriving. Long may it continue. His press resistance and technical quality could be crucial in winning the central battle against Tuesday’s hosts.

7 CM – Curtis Jones

Curtis Jones.

Alexis Mac Allister could do with a rest, and Curtis Jones could do with a start. Forest’s victory means that the coming weekend’s clash against Bournemouth stretches to a new realm of paramount importance, and the Argentine will need to be in top condition.

Jones has the skills to hurt Milan too, you know. As per FBref, he actually ranks among the top 6% of midfielders across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for pass completion, the top 10% for progressive carries and the top 75 for successful take-ons per 90. Time to unleash.

8 RW – Federico Chiesa

Federico Chiesa for Juventus

The controversial one. Federico Chiesa is in line to make his debut for Liverpool after signing from Juventus in a deal worth £12.5m this summer, and he could replace Mohamed Salah.

Salah was pretty flat against Nuno Espirito Santo’s side and Slot might want to make this change with the upcoming fixture list in mind. Chiesa, moreover, will know AC Milan better than anyone else in Liverpool’s squad and could be a wildcard worth slapping on the table.

It would be a bold call, but Slot has already shown his ruthlessness (looking at you, Quansah), and Salah might be the better for it, rested and thus restive ahead of the weekend’s Premier League clash.

9 AM – Dominik Szoboszlai

Dominik Szoboszlai flattered to deceive last time but he’s enjoyed a largely successful start to the Slot era. Wastefulness in front of goal aside, he’s highly effective, with energy and driven performances that enable the success of those around him, such as…

10 LW – Luis Diaz

Luis Diaz. The Colombian tore Manchester United to shreds two weeks ago but looked a shell of himself against Forest (annoying trend here, isn’t there).

He’s as tenacious as he is tireless – and he could run for days. However, he only won two out of seven duels and lost all three dribbles, so will now need to raise his game once again.

Mithali Raj on Test kit presentation: Reminds players their importance in women's cricket history

New head coach Ramesh Powar conceived the ceremony to help the Indian team ‘find a purpose’

ESPNcricinfo staff01-Jun-20211:58

Mithali: ‘Wanted to make players realise their role in women’s cricket history’

The aim is to “leave the jersey in a better place,” Jemimah Rodrigues wrote on social media on Monday, after receiving her Test whites from Mithali Raj and Jhulan Goswami. She wasn’t the only India Women player to celebrate. After all, it’s a rare opportunity for the team – a Test match, something that had appeared a thing of the past till the other day. Since their innings win over South Africa at home in Mysuru in November 2014, the team hasn’t played any Tests – no team has, apart from Australia and England.”From the players’ perspective, it’s just an occasion to make them feel very special about the white jersey or getting into a format which I personally fell is the most challenging, respected and oldest format,” Raj said at the team’s pre-departure press conference on Tuesday. “It has its own charm. When the girls who are getting into the team playing that format for the first time, it’s very special for them.Related

“Unfortunately, I never had this sort of a ceremony way back in the 1990s, but it’s good to have it because the girls feel the excitement that’s there in the group and it’s very important to have that idea what Tests mean to the players, to the team, and the importance of former cricketers who’ve laid the path for so many years, kept the sport alive for the current generations and to inspire the future generations. It is also an atmosphere built to make them realise that they play an important role in the history of women’s cricket.”Head coach Ramesh Powar, who replaced WV Raman head coach in the position last month, is understood to have been the brains behind the kit-presentation ceremony.”Whenever I have taken over a new team, I have tried to find a purpose,” Powar said. “It’s as simple as that. I have done something [like this] with the Mumbai [men’s] team and before that also. So this was something I thought was missing in [Indian] women’s cricket where they’ve never been presented with the T-shirts or been told the journey of women’s cricket.”There has to be purpose when you get into that BCCI and India T-shirt that why you are playing this game, why you are in this team, or what the purpose is going forward. I believe in purpose; if you don’t have purpose you will not create that atmosphere in the team, you will not be able to perform consistently over a longer period of time.”For the likes of Raj and Goswami, both ten Tests old, it’s a return to a familiar space, and while some of the others, like Harmanpreet Kaur and Smriti Mandhana and Shikha Pandey and Poonam Yadav, have had a taste of the format, it will be a fresh experience for them too. As for Deepti Sharma or Rodrigues or Shafali Verma, it’s a brand-new day altogether.

After India play England, they are also scheduled to play a day-night Test in Australia, their first pink-ball game in the format.

BBL draft postponed again, tournament to finish in late January

Clubs can start building their lists for the tournament which will begin on December 5

The proposed BBL draft for overseas players has been postponed for another year due to the ongoing uncertainties created by the pandemic.Initially pushed back from the 2020-21 season, it had been hoped to get the system up and running for this campaign but instead overseas players – up to three per club – will be signed in the traditional way.The contracting embargo has now been lifted, which means clubs can start building their lists for the tournament which will begin on December 5, with defending champions Sydney Sixers scheduled to face Melbourne Stars at the SCG, three days before the first men’s Ashes Test. The season has been scheduled as a full home-and-away competition although Covid-19 will keep everyone on alert. Some BBL coaches had expressed uncertainty about the draft system in recent months, but Cricket Australia still wants to implement it in the future.Related

“We really like the idea of an overseas player draft and it’s something that will be on the agenda again next year,” Alistair Dobson, the general manager of Big Bash Leagues, told ESPNcricinfo. “But when we’ve considered the continuing challenges with overseas travel and the need to give players and clubs some certainty, we’ve made the call to postpone it for another year.”There’s always different opinions and that’s what we love about sport broadly. Across the board our clubs are aligned on the model, it’s just clear this isn’t the year to try it. We are still incredibly confident we’ll get great players in.”Finished before FebruaryThe full BBL fixtures were announced on Wednesday – subject to changes needed due to Covid-19 – with the season starting and finishing earlier than recent summers. The finals series will begin on January 21 and conclude with the grand final on January 28 which is inside the school holidays. It is hoped that will help boost crowd numbers.Key dates

It also means the competition will finish before the Australia men’s white-ball commitments begin against New Zealand which could make more of those players available for their clubs, although it remains unlikely that those part of the Ashes series will have a chance to take play. The England Lions squads which will tour concurrently to the main Ashes group for part of the series could be a source of overseas players as well as the Afghanistan Test team who play Australia in late November. “Having them already in the country would certainly remove some barriers that would otherwise exist,” Dobson said.As with last season the group stages will finish with a triple header although overall only four days have been shaved off the overall length of the competition (59 down to 55). Once the tournament starts there are only four days – the first three of the Adelaide day-night Test and Christmas Day – without matches in the regular season.KFC Big Bash

International clash viewed as a benefitThere will be seven days when BBL matches overlap with play in the men’s Ashes series if games go their full distance: two during the day-night Test and all five days of the final match in Perth. There is also the likelihood of a number of matches running into each other on double-header days. The late morning slot which was trialled last season around the day-night Test won’t be replicated.”BBL has always coexisted with international cricket,” Dobson said. “We know from a broader audience perspective that the stronger the summer of Test cricket the more successful the BBL is in terms of the halo that the men’s Test season brings, and none more so than an Ashes series.”It’s not just TV but attendances as well because crowds are such a big part of the BBL, where there are games head-to-head on TV they aren’t in an attendance perspective, so like any scheduling process it’s a trade-off and balance of different considerations.”It will be confirmed in the coming weeks if all three innovations brought into the playing conditions last year – Power Surge, X-Factor and Bash Boost – will continue. The Surge was widely acknowledged as the most successful but Dobson indicated he was hopeful they will all get a second season. He also added that ensuring matches are completed in good time is something the competition is very conscious of with some IPL games spilling past four hours. The current Covid-19 outbreak in Sydney has provided a reminder of how challenging it can be to put on sports leagues in the current climate with winter codes having to set up hubs outside New South Wales. Cricket still has time on its side, although the WBBL is due to begin in Sydney in early October.”We had so many hurdles to get over last year,” Dobson said. “We are under no illusions there are still challenges but have confidence that our track record and experience holds us in good stead.”

Left for £0, now worth £84m: Arsenal must regret losing world-class star

While they might not have won the trophies to reflect it in recent years, Arsenal are undoubtedly one of the biggest clubs in English football.

The Gunners have a long and storied history littered with sensational footballers who have been great entertainers and serial winners.

However, due to their size, the North Londoners have also missed out on their fair share of talents as well.

There are countless stories of Arsène Wenger just missing out on youngsters who went on to be world-beaters, but one player, who is now worth a fortune, has perhaps haunted them more than any other in modern history.

The ones that got away

So, of all the stars that could have been wearing red and white, let’s start with someone who many would consider the best player in the world: Kylian Mbappé.

Yes, according to Sky Sports, long before he made his way to Paris Saint-Germain, the Gunners were incredibly keen on signing the sensational French forward, with the World-Cup winger explaining that it was more than a passing interest.

Unfortunately for the Gunners, despite trying again in 2017, it was clear that they could not afford the astronomical £160m fee that the Parisians would eventually pay for him, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Going slightly further back now, and before he was tearing it up for cross-city rivals Chelsea, Eden Hazard was on the North Londoner’s radar.

In a 2019 interview with GOAL, former chief transfer negotiator Dick Law confirmed that back in 2012, the club were seriously considering a move for the Belgian magician.

Still, as fans will attest, that was a point in time when the club were very reticent to splash the cash. So they passed up on the opportunity and over the next seven years they had to watch the incredible talent rack up a haul of 110 goals and 85 assists in 359 trophy-laden appearances for the West Londoners.

However, while both of these transfer misses certainly sting, neither would prove to be quite as damaging to the club as the decision to release one of their own youth players, who’s since gone on to become one of the best goalscorers in football history.

One that got away

The transfers that nearly happened but never did. This article is part of Football FanCast's One That Got Away series.

Arsenal's Harry Kane mistake

Yes, most of you will probably have guessed by now that the player in question is England captain and goalscorer extraordinaire Harry Kane.

The sensational striker spent about a year in the Gunners’ youth ranks before he was released in 2002, with Roy Massey, the club’s former academy manager, explaining that at the time, the club believed the youngster “didn’t have what we thought it would take to become a professional footballer”.

While that sounds absurd today, he does point out that the future international spent the next few years playing for a non-league youth side before Tottenham Hotspur finally came in for him.

Unfortunately for Arsenal fans, they are more than aware of what happened next, as in the decade since he made his first-team debut, the world-class striker has made a habit of scoring against the club, racking up a haul of 15 goals and two assists against the Gunners in just 21 appearances.

However, while his goals against the club are a particularly direct reminder of their mistake in letting him go, he’s also gone on to become arguably the greatest goalscorer in the world, with an absurd tally of 361 goals and 94 assists in 565 appearances since the 2009/10 season, equating to a goal involvement on average every 1.24 games.

Moreover, despite being on the wrong side of 30 and going into his second season playing for Bayern Munich, the “world-class” icon, as dubbed by former manager Antonio Conte, is showing no signs of slowing down and already has ten goals and five assists to his name in six appearances, which helps to explain his sky-high valuation of €100m, which converts to about £84m.

Ultimately, Arsenal have missed out on signing a lot of young superstars in the past, but their biggest mistake has to be releasing Kane for free, as the Englishman has been a consistent and potent thorn in their side ever since.

South Africa earned their first T20I victory under new white-ball captain Temba Bavuma and successfully defended a score under 170 for just the third time since the 2016 World T20 to level the five-match series against West Indies 1-1.While Kagiso Rabada took wickets at the start and end of the innings, South Africa had their spinners George Linde and Tabraiz Shamsi to thank for the win. Between them, Linde and Shamsi bowled eight overs, conceded 35 runs and took three wickets to take West Indies from 62 for 2 in the ninth over to 70 for 5 in the 11th, in pursuit of 167.Despite late cameos from Jason Holder and Fabian Allen, the required rate proved too high. Both teams will be concerned with the performances of their middle orders, who failed to build on promising starts. No South African batter outside the top three scored more than 11 while West Indies’ No. 3-6 batters were all dismissed in single figures.Positive in the powerplay With as many as five potential opening batters in their squad, South Africa have several combinations to choose from but stuck with Reeza Hendricks and Quinton de Kock for the second successive match. After putting on 33 in 3.4 overs on Saturday, the pair came good with 73 in 6.4 overs in this match. They scored 69 runs in the Powerplay including seven fours and three sixes and were aggressive against the opening spin pair and the seamers that followed.Watch cricket on ESPN+

De Kock took 14 runs off Holder’s opening over, including the first six of the innings as he cleared midwicket. At the other end, Hendricks plundered 14 off Allen, and hit him back over his head for six before hitting two fours off the next three balls and then being gifted four leg-byes. South Africa have only scored more runs in a Powerplay three times – 88 for 0 and 83 for 0 against England in 2016, and 78 for 0 against Zimbabwe in 2010. In the end, it set them up for a match-winning total.Ultra-Edge fails…Hendricks was well-set to score the sixth fifty of his T20I career but two balls after the halfway mark was beaten as he attempted a reverse-sweep off Kevin Sinclair. He was given out on-field and reviewed after consultation with his captain, Bavuma. A cutaway of the players was shown but Ultra-Edge was not available and the television umpire, Joel Wilson, eventually had to make his call based on the split-screen. There was a clear gap between bat and ball and ball-tracking upheld the on-field call, with the ball clipping off stump, so had to go. South Africa were 96 for 2, with 200 still well within sight.Temba Bavuma plays one fine on the on side•AFP/Getty Images

…and so does South Africa’s middle-orderSouth Africa’s top-heavy squad has left them with a soft middle-order and that showed after the Powerplay and particularly in the second half of their innings. They lost 7 for 97 between the 7th and 20th over, adding only 21 for the loss of three wickets in the last four overs.Left-arm seamer Obed McCoy was the standout performer at the death. After his first over cost 10 runs in the Powerplay, he conceded only 15 runs in his next three and claimed the wickets of David Miller, caught at deep midwicket, Linde, lbw on review, and Heinrich Klaasen, holing out in the last over. Dwayne Bravo bowled the penultimate over and gave away just six runs to build on the start Sinclair had given West Indies. He opened the bowling and finished with 2 for 23 in his four overs, the most economical West Indian return and his own career-best.South African spinRelated

Pollard: Narine will return to T20I side once he gains confidence

Linde and Shamsi bowled six overs in tandem after the Powerplay and gave away just 23 runs between them. Importantly, they picked up three wickets in that period to put South Africa in a winning position. After the seventh and eighth overs yielded just eight runs between them, Nicholas Pooran, batting at No. 4, felt he needed to do something; he tried to hit Linde over long-on but played for turn when there wasn’t any and skied the ball to Miller on the boundary. Pooran has been dismissed in single figures in eight out of his last 10 T20 innings. In the next over, Kieron Pollard attempted a slog-sweep off a Shamsi legbreak and found a diving Hendricks at midwicket. Four balls later, Andre Russell did not get hold of a leg-side heave off Linde, whom he tried to dispatch over deep midwicket. Klaasen negotiated between staring into the sun and losing the ball in the shadows and ended up taking the catch of the match to leave West Indies 70 for 4.How’s that?We all know the old trick when the fielding side appeal for caught behind when the ball has drifted down the leg side to avoid having the umpire call wide, don’t we? Well, South Africa did that at the start of the 17th over when Allen missed a pull off Anrich Nortje, which was called wide. For once, it worked: de Kock convinced Bavuma to review but a working Ultra-Edge showed no contact between bat, or glove, and ball – though the wide was reversed, with the ball flicking the thigh pad.In the event, the next ball brought a wicket: Allen drove Nortje to Bavuma at extra-cover, whose quick pick-up and release back to Nortje allowed him to catch Holder short of his crease coming back for two, all but ending West Indies’ chances of a successful chase. Allen hit the expensive Lungi Ngidi for three sixes in the final over, but by then the game was lost.
