ICC Test rankings: Pant, Rohit joint-seventh; Ashwin moves up to No. 2

India’s players had a lot to celebrate with the latest update in the ICC rankings

ESPNcricinfo staff10-Mar-20216:53

Rohit Sharma – I don’t want anyone get upset when Pant gets out playing shots

The rise of Rishabh Pant continues. He has now secured the highest points tally (747) by any Indian wicketkeeper on the ICC Test batting rankings. That puts him at the joint-seventh place, along with team-mate Rohit Sharma and New Zealand’s Henry Nicholls.Much as he was when India beat Australia in their own backyard, Pant was a central figure in his team’s victory over England last week which sealed their place in the inaugural World Test Championship final. He struck his first century at home, in Ahmedabad, an innings that drew praise from the very best in the business – Adam Gilchrist and Brian Lara to name two. His coach Ravi Shastri was particularly effusive about the way he committed to a sterner fitness regime that is helping him churn out these big runs.Pant has amassed 544 runs from seven Test matches, making him India’s top-scorer in the 2020-21 season and third-highest overall. Among those runs was a 97 that helped India keep an incredible series alive in Sydney and then he sealed it in even more incredible fashion by scoring 89 thrillingly unbeaten runs in Brisbane.Providing equally invaluable contributions, but with the ball, R Ashwin is now ranked second among all bowlers in Test cricket. This comes soon after he set the record for fastest – in terms of balls (21,242) – to 400 Test wickets. The India allrounder had a stellar series against England, scoring a century on his home ground, which he said made him feel like a hero, and he finished it with 32 wickets from four Test matches.Rohit Sharma and Rishabh Pant are ranked joint-seventh among Test batsmen by the ICC•BCCI

Not far behind him was Axar Patel. The left-arm spinner playing only his first Test series struck 27 times in three matches to average a scarcely believable 10.54. Thanks to that performance, he climbed eight places to 30th, but more notably, he has 552 points. Only two bowlers have ever done better after their first three Tests – former India leg-spinner Narendra Hirwani (564) and Australia fast bowler Charlie Turner (553), who played in the 19th century.Sharma has reached his career-best spot after a string of excellent performances in tough conditions. His 161 in the second Test on a Chennai turner was later hailed as the turning point on which India were able to come back from 0-1 down and beat England 3-1. Overall, he is the team’s second-highest scorer this season – and fourth-highest overall – with 474 runs at an average of 47.40.The latest ICC ranking update also included a couple of blips for India. Their captain Virat Kohli (fifth place with 814) is sitting on his lowest points tally since November 2017 and their No. 3 Cheteshwar Pujara has slipped below 700 for the first time since September 2016.England, whose captain Joe Root admitted they didn’t take enough of their chances to trouble India, could take solace from James Anderson moving up to the fourth place in bowlers’ rankings. His burst of reverse swing on the last day of the first Test in Chennai was crucial in giving the visitors a lead that they couldn’t capitalise upon. Also moving up the ranks was batsman Dan Lawrence, who rose 47 places to 93rd. An equally rapid mover was Washington Sundar, who was stranded on 96 in the Ahmedabad Test match. He gained 39 places and is at the 62nd position.

Australia clinch 23rd straight win despite Leigh Kasperek's six-wicket haul

Rachael Haynes and Jess Jonassen played starring roles with bat and ball in a 71-run victory

What do you do when you’ve just broken a world record for the most consecutive wins in your sport? If you’re Meg Lanning’s irrepressible Australians, you celebrate your 22nd consecutive win momentarily, take a sightseeing hike up Mount Maunganui on your rest day, then promptly go back out again and win No. 23 to claim another trophy – Australia’s ninth consecutive Rose Bowl victory over New Zealand, keeping possession of the Trans-Tasman silverware for a 22nd year.Despite the most aggressive of starts from Alyssa Healy in a scene-setting stand with Rachael Haynes, this was not Australia’s best or most complete performance. Nevertheless, it provided another reminder of how the team’s depth makes them such dastardly opponents: New Zealand, though enjoying numerous fruitful passages, were never able to reach a point of critical mass.Defending a tally of 271 rather than the 300 or so they had appeared likely to make when Healy, Haynes and Lanning were all scoring fluently, the tourists were able to find plenty of assistance in the evening air at the Bay Oval.Initially, it was Tayla Vlaeminck and Megan Schutt swinging the new ball with plenty of venom, then Jess Jonassen, Georgia Wareham and Ash Gardner extracted plenty of turn from the surface with which to stifle any threatening New Zealand partnership.Haynes’ innings was the platform off which Healy was able to launch early on, clouting three boundaries in her first four balls and spoiling to add to that trio for virtually every ball thereafter. While Healy’s timing and placement were not always pristine, her intention to dominate was typical of the way in which Lanning’s team have assumed such a prime position in the game.Lanning’s own innings was a high-quality cameo, and when she was dismissed at 180 for 2 in the 34th over, it appeared difficult to see New Zealand conceding anything less than another 100 runs. That they were able to corral the remainder of the innings, as much as Gardner, Ellyse Perry, Beth Mooney and Nicola Carey tried to clear the boundary, was down to an excellent spell from the offspinner Leigh Kasperek – stepping, for once, out of the considerable shadow of Amelia Kerr.Leigh Kasperek’s 6 for 46 were the best-ever Women’s ODI figures against Australia•Getty Images

Gaining just enough spin while maintaining a disciplined length, Kasperek was ultimately able to pluck 6 for 46 – in fact, no bowler had ever returned a better analysis against Australia in a 50-over match, an achievement Kasperek will rightly be able to cherish for years to come.Nevertheless, 272 was still a hard target under lights, something the Australians were quick to exploit in their first floodlit ODI since 2019. Vlaeminck in particular made life difficult for the home side’s top order, delivering her outswingers at considerable pace and ensuring New Zealand, after the early losses of Lauren Down and the captain Amy Satterthwaite, needed to think as much of survival as scoring.Kerr and Hayley Jensen were able to take the scoreboard as far as 76 at reasonable pace, and after the opener picked out long-off from the bowling of Wareham, they were still well placed at 120 for 3 just beyond the halfway point. At that point Kerr chose the wrong Jonassen ball to charge and failed to get to the pitch, leaving the spin to create a slice and a catch to backward point. From there New Zealand were subjected to the now familiar squeeze imposed by Lanning and her bowlers, pushing the required rate up and up until errors started to be made. Wareham and the shrewd Jonassen were the primary beneficiaries in terms of wickets, but all the Australians played their part whether with the ball or in the field.None summed this up better than Perry, who saved a six struck by Maddy Green when she dived backwards to catch the ball right on the rope and then threw it back off-balance while remaining, in the third umpire’s judgment, millimeters inside the boundary. It’s the sort of desperation, even in times of relative comfort, that has kept Australia at the top of the pile. Unless something drastic takes place, it should keep them there for quite some time yet.

Newcastle could land a bigger coup than Guehi in Foden-like star

Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi has been a player subject to huge interest from Newcastle United in recent weeks, as Eddie Howe looks to bolster his backline.

The 24-year-old has been the focus of three separate bids from the Magpies this summer, but have so far been unable to match the Eagles’ valuation of £75m for the centre-back.

His price tag has undoubtedly been inflated after his stellar performances at Euro 2024, with Guehi featuring in all but one game as he helped England reach a second successive European Championship final.

England defender Marc Guehi

He would be a massive coup for Howe’s side in his attempts to secure a return to Champions League football, but with just over a week remaining in the transfer window, they will have to act quickly to avoid missing out on such a talented player.

Despite the interest in Guehi, the club could be about to land a star who would be an even bigger coup, providing the added cutting edge in the final third at St James’ Park.

Newcastle transfer news

It was reported over the weekend that Newcastle are said to be preparing a bid to sign Barcelona winger Ferran Torres, with the Spaniard expected to depart the LaLiga side this window.

Barcelona forward Ferran Torres.

The 24-year-old, who is valued at around €30m (£25m), wants to stay and fight for his place under new boss Hansi Flick, but Barca are willing to listen to offers for his services.

Torres only arrived at Barca back in January 2022 for a fee in the region of £55m from Premier League side Manchester City, but has failed to make the impact many anticipated, now finding himself behind 17-year-old Lamine Yamal in the pecking order.

If Torres is to arrive at St James' Park – where he previously scored a hat-trick for the Cityzens – it would potentially allow the Magpies to sign their own version of a player who has set England’s top-flight alight in recent times.

Why Torres could be like Foden for Newcastle

City forward Phil Foden has emerged as one of the leading youngsters in England over recent years, making himself a regular under Pep Guardiola at the Etihad.

The 24-year-old enjoyed his best campaign to date in 2023/24, scoring 19 and registering eight assists in his 35 Premier League appearances, helping the club secure their fourth league title in the last five years.

He was once a teammate of Torres during their respective times at City, but despite his departure a couple of years ago, the Spaniard managed to match or even better the England international in numerous key areas in the Champions League last season.

The “incredible” ace, as described by former boss Guardiola, has been ranked as a similar player to Foden by FBref – understandable given his impressive numbers in the European competition during 2023/24.

Whilst he may have managed to produce fewer combined goals and assists than Foden, Torres did match the City attacker for shot-on-target accuracy but averaged a higher goal per shot-on-target rate – proving to be slightly more clinical than the Englishman.

The Spaniard also managed to complete more crosses and won more aerial battles than Foden, making him a complete option for the right-hand side of Howe’s attack.

Given the stats he produced in the Champions League last season, the £25m price tag could be a potential bargain for a player who has all the qualities to transform the Magpies’ attack.

Guehi’s potential arrival on Tyneside would undoubtedly provide more defensive cover, but Torres would bring extra quality alongside Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon, allowing the club to reach the next level in their hunt for European football, making him a bigger coup for Howe's side.

Of course, Guehi himself would be an exciting move, but prising a player from an elite outfit like Barcelona would be a real statement, particularly with Torres having chalked up 12 goal involvements in just 28 games in the Premier League previously.

As Saturday's hard-fought win over Southampton showcased, the Magpies do already boast defensive stability – even without Guehi onboard – with it seemingly signings like that of the Spaniard which could make the real difference between success and failure at the top end of the pitch.

Arsenal flop was sold for just £4m, now he’s outscoring Kai Havertz

Arsenal have been totally transformed over the last few years.

It was only in 2021/22 that Mikel Arteta's side failed to secure a top-four finish thanks to a late-season collapse that included a humbling 3-0 defeat away to Tottenham Hotspur.

However, since that disastrous run, the Gunners have transformed into serious and consistent title challengers in the Premier League, in large part thanks to the manager and his signings, such as Declan Rice, Martin Odegaard and even Kai Havertz.

Kai Havertz

That said, as well as the German international played in the second half of last season, one of Arsenal's former centre-forwards, who couldn't quite make it work in North London, actually outscored him and has been for a couple of years now.

Havertz's recent record

Arsenal made the £65m signing of Havertz last summer. It was quite a surprise to see the Gunners spend so much money on the German because, while he certainly has talent, he was coming off a rather underwhelming campaign in West London.

In that final year in blue, he scored nine goals and provided just one assist in 47 appearances, meaning he maintained a pretty poor average of a goal involvement every 4.7 games, and we say poor because 30 of those appearances came in the centre-forward position.

However, once the dust had settled following his move to the Emirates and got up to speed with the rest of Arteta's squad, the former Bayer Leverkusen ace showed the rest of the league that he was still the same player so many people were excited about in Germany.

In his first season in red and white, the 25-year-old scored 14 goals and provided seven assists, meaning he maintained a more impressive average of goal involvement every 2.42 games for the Gunners, and that's taking into account that he made 32 of his 51 appearances in midfield.

However, he'll have to really play out of his skin to outscore a former Arsenal flop over the course of the next ten months who's been outscoring him for the last couple of years.

Perez's recent record

Yes, the player in question is Lucas Perez, who joined Arsenal from Deportivo La Coruna in the summer of 2016 for a fee in the region of £17m.

However, after just a season with the club, in which he scored seven goals – including a Champions League hat-trick – and provided five assists in 21 games, he was loaned back to Deportivo, after which he was then sold to West Ham United for about £4m.

Over the next few years, the A Coruña-born poacher would move from East London to Alaves to Elche to Cadiz before eventually returning to his boyhood club Deportivo, where he remains today, but don't let the constant moves fool you; he's been an effective goalscorer for a few years now.

For example, in 22/23, the 5 foot 11 marksman scored 13 goals and provided eight assists in 36 matches, equating to a goal involvement once every 1.71 games.

He followed that up with an even more impressive campaign the following season, in which he scored 16 goals and provided 19 assists in just 35 appearances, meaning he maintained an incredible average of a goal involvement every game.

Now, there is the obvious caveat that he is playing in a weaker league with far less pressure on his shoulders, but it is interesting to see how a player who struggled to adapt to Arsenal has since thrived back in Spain.

Ultimately, there is a good chance that Perez will again outscore Havertz this season, but given their respective performances last year, both strikers seem to be at the perfect clubs for them.

England considering 'new faces' for New Zealand Tests – Ashley Giles

Players in quarantine after IPL postponement unlikely to be rushed back

Ashley Giles, the managing director of England men’s cricket, has hinted that the upcoming Test series against New Zealand will be used to look at “some new faces”.While England have the unexpected availability of some players they had anticipated would be at the IPL to consider, Giles suggested there will be no hurry to rush such players back into action. The England management are also mindful that, with a busy schedule of cricket ahead of them and a working assumption that players will have to remain in bio-bubbles for long periods of time, they may require a larger squad than normal to ensure they can rest and rotate as required. To that end, they want to ensure fringe players who could well have a role to play later in the year have an opportunity to familiarise themselves with the environment. That means England are likely to use the two New Zealand Tests to provide opportunities for Ollie Robinson and James Bracey, who are both uncapped at international level, and recall Craig Overton, who has played four Tests and an ODI. All three have impressed in county cricket over a sustained period. Ben Foakes could also win a first Test cap in England.”What we do know and what’s not going to change is that given the weight of cricket, given the Ashes series, and we don’t know what conditions that’s going to be played in with regard to a Covid environment, we are going to need a bigger group of players,” Giles said. “We may also choose against New Zealand to look at some new faces.”Related

Bracey shows he's real deal as Middlesex are muscled to margins

Several of England’s Test prospects, notably Chris Woakes, Jos Buttler, Sam Curran, Jonny Bairstow and Moeen Ali, are currently serving a quarantine period which ends at the weekend, while a few more – Ben Stokes, who is definitely out of the series, Dom Sibley, Olly Stone and Jofra Archer – are injury doubts.Sibley has just about recovered from the broken finger that he sustained in mid-April (he was considered fit to bat but not field in Warwickshire’s recently concluded match against Worcestershire), but will have been unable to play a first-team game before the squad for the Test series is picked.Stone, meanwhile, has an infection in his big toe for which he is taking antibiotics, while Archer made a cautious return from minor hand surgery and a long-standing elbow problem in second XI cricket recent days. Given his importance to England in all formats and the fact that the New Zealand series does not form part of the World Test Championship, it seems unlikely he will be rushed back into service. Stone is expected to be fully fit within days and has a good chance of inclusion within the Test squad.Jofra Archer made his comeback from injury for Sussex’s 2nd XI last week•Getty Images

But it is, perhaps, those players currently in quarantine who require the more careful management. Some of them spent more than four months in various bubbles over the winter and are expected to be given time to see their families before they return to cricket.”All these guys are currently in quarantine and have had a number of spells in quarantine and bubbles in this last period,” Giles said. “Some of it’s their choice, I get that. We need to look after them, with the amount of cricket they’ve got coming up. We’re not going to rush or force them back into cricket.”Chris Silverwood will work with each and every one of them, as will our medical teams on what’s best for their progress. On the matter of playing cricket, they are all different. We know historically that Chris Woakes, for example, likes to get more overs under his belt with the red ball before he’s up to speed. Others react differently to that, so it’s a case by case basis. We have got an awful lot of cricket coming up.”Even without the IPL players or injuries, the competition for places is tough. Stuart Broad and James Anderson are both expected to be fully fit for the series but the absence of Stokes may make balancing the side problematic. Woakes or Curran could, therefore, come into the equation. The Test squad is likely to be announced on May 17 or 18 with the players entering a bubble about 10 days later.
