Mark Robinson vows to 'get Warwickshire back' to where they belong

New head coach ready to enact Farbrace vision of success built around local core

As a “superstitious coach” at Sussex, Mark Robinson “tried everything” at times to beat Warwickshire. Now, as new head coach, Robinson is determined to turn the Bears back into that formidable force. As reported by ESPNcricinfo on Thursday, Robinson has been confirmed as Warwickshire head coach, having previously guided England to victory at the 2017 Women’s World Cup. Before that, he had coached Sussex from 2005-15, winning back-to-back County Championships in 2006 and 2007, as well as the T20 Cup, Friends Provident Trophy and Pro40 League (twice). His time at Sussex coincided with a low ebb for Warwickshire – they were relegated from the Championship and Pro40 League in 2007 – but also a time of resurgence after Ashley Giles took over as director of cricket in 2008. They returned to the top flight at the end of that season, going on to win the title in 2012.”Warwickshire kept beating us, to be fair,” Robinson told reporters via Zoom on Friday. “We didn’t have a great record here. I tried everything, as a superstitious coach, to try and get a win at Edgbaston. I kept changing hotels, banning certain members of staff from coming because they came last time we lost.”We’ve got to get back to Warwickshire being that very, very resilient team, which was my experience of them. Whenever you came to Edgbaston it was a hard place to play, players did some of the hard yards and you could never really feel you could put them down. They would always seem to come back at you.”Robinson replaces Jim Troughton, who was sacked as Warwickshire coach after going winless in their Bob Willis Trophy campaign of 2020, when they also missed out on the quarter-finals of the T20 Blast.Related

Robinson believes his vast experience stands him in good stead to return Warwickshire to winning ways.”I’ve now been in the men’s game for 35 years, I did four years with the girls as well,” said Robinson. “The little bit of time out, it’s been really good for me. I’ve been around lots of different organisations, I worked with the England deaf team, which was fascinating.”Every year, we all start equal don’t we, at the beginning of the season, so your goals are to win, to win matches and to win tournaments, to win competitions and win leagues, that has to be the same… you’ve got to start with that ambition and it will be no different here.”Paul Farbrace, Warwickshire’s director of sport since the start of the 2019 season, saw Robinson’s appointment as another pillar upon which to build a new era of success, based on fostering local talent, developing players for the England system, and winning.Particularly pleasing for Farbrace were the prospects of Academy products Rob Yates, who enjoyed an excellent maiden Championship season in 2019, and Dan Mousley, England’s leading run-scorer at the Under-19 World Cup a year ago.”It’s great to hear Mark talking about winning,” Farbrace said. “I want to talk about us as a sporting team winning and that’s what we expect and that’s what we should be about.”We’ve got a very keen, hungry, enthusiastic group of players who want to achieve, we’ve got a lot of players on the fringe of England honours, England Lions, and that’s great to have, but it’s also about getting the team that actually pulls together and wins trophies.”Sarah Taylor this week credited Robinson with sensitively handling her battle with anxiety, ensuring mental health was openly discussed within the England Women’s squad. He ultimately lost his job as head coach after England Women were overwhelmed by Australia in the 2019 Ashes series. The Warwickshire role is the highest-profile position he has held since.

Finn Allen the breakout star in Super Smash as Wellington defend title

Ross Taylor had a mixed tournament and Colin de Grandhomme returned to action but didn’t bowl

The Super Smash, New Zealand’s premier T20 competition ended on Saturday, with Michael Bracewell’s Wellington Firebirds successfully defending their title against the Canterbury Kings in front of a packed home crowd at the Basin Reserve. ESPNcricinfo looks back at the major talking points from the tournament.Wellington’s near-flawless title run
After having scrapped to the title in 2019-20, the Firebirds thoroughly dominated this season, securing their fourth domestic T20 crown and second on the bounce at the Basin Reserve. They launched the season by hunting down 177 against the Auckland Aces on Christmas Eve and simply powered on, with the loss against the Kings in the league phase being the only blemish in their otherwise flawless run.Related

Could Jamieson's stellar home summer spark IPL interest?

The Firebirds ran into the Kings again in the final, but Devon Conway, who had watched the season opener from the grass banks after being rested, made a sublime 93 not out off 63 balls to close it out. After having topped the domestic run-scoring charts across formats last season, Conway finished second, behind his opening partner Finn Allen, in this season’s Super Smash.Seamers Hamish Bennett and Logan van Beek led the way with the ball for the Firebirds, claiming 13 wickets apiece at economy rates of under eight per over. Allrounder Jimmy Neesham underwent surgery midway through the season for a compound dislocation on his finger, but he returned with a triple-strike against the Aces in the lead-up to the final.Van Beek also torched the tournament with his scarcely believable one-handed outfield catch to dismiss the Northern Knights’ Brett Hampton.

Overall, the Firebirds won ten out of 11 games, while the next best sides – the Kings and the Central Stags – had only six wins to show for.Finn Allen the breakout star of the tournament
He was the fire to Conway’s ice. He rattled off 512 runs in 11 innings at a stellar strike rate of 193.93, and nobody had more sixes than his tally of 25. Much like Brendon McCullum and his protégé Tim Seifert, the opener regularly dashed down the track to bend attacks out of shape. That Allen could do so against New Zealand internationals suggests that he isn’t too far away from making his international debut. A day after winning the Super Smash, Allen was picked in the New Zealand T20I squad as cover for the forthcoming T20I series against Australia.Allen hit his peak when he smoked a 16-ball half-century against the Stags. Only Kieran Noema-Barnett (14 balls) and Martin Guptill (15) have struck faster fifties in New Zealand’s domestic T20 competition.

Is Colin de Grandhomme back in action?
The allrounder, who had been sidelined from the internationals against West Indies as well as Pakistan with a foot injury, was back in action although he didn’t bowl. He had last taken the ball in the four-day Plunket Shield in October 2020. He played four games for the Knights as a specialist batsman, making 51 runs at a strike rate of nearly 160.In a revised chase of 91 from 14 overs against the Kings, he ushered the Knights home along with Kane Williamson. The New Zealand captain later pulled out of the tournament as a precautionary measure after hurting his elbow.Ross Taylor returned to the Super Smash after four years•Getty Images

Did Taylor do enough to force his way back into the T20I side?
After being dropped from the T20I squad, Ross Taylor was asked to prove his form in the Super Smash. He returned to the competition after four years, and had mixed returns: 125 runs in six innings at a strike rate of nearly 165. Although Taylor showed signs of his best during his 25-ball half-century for the Stags against the Kings, he fell for a duck in the preliminary final as the Stags crashed out. With the younger players like Conway and Glenn Phillips stepping up for the New Zealand middle-order role, and Allen too throwing his hat into the T20 World Cup ring, Taylor probably needs to do more if he is to win his spot back.Give me a rundown of the New Zealanders in the IPL auction shortlist
All up, 20 New Zealanders have made the cut with Kyle Jamieson, Tim Southee and Corey Anderson in the top bracket, listing their base prices at INR 75 lakh ($US 103,000 approx.). Jamieson, who enjoyed a bumper home season, particularly with the ball, could be a hot pick among the overseas quicks. In January, coach Gary Stead, who has overseen Jamieson’s progress from his domestic side Canterbury to the national team, reckoned that the presence of New Zealand coaches in the IPL might be “one of the advantages” for him.The likes of Guptill, Neesham, Phillips, de Grandhomme and Conway have set their base prices at INR 50 lakh (US$ 69,000 approx.). Colin Munro and Adam Milne, who had impressive stints in the Big Bash League across the Tasman Sea, will also invite bids from INR 50 lakh.Meanwhile, Super Smash champion Allen and Stags allrounder Josh Clarkson are in the auction with reserve prices of INR 20 lakh (US$ 27,500 approx.).

Expected to leave: Chelsea want £150k-p/w "galactico" who’d revive Nkunku

Christopher Nkunku had huge expectations to be a success at Chelsea upon his £52m move to the club from RB Leipzig last summer.

The French forward moved to Stamford Bridge after scoring 16 goals in his 25 Bundesliga matches during 2022/23, but he was unable to make any sort of impact for the Blues last season.

He missed the vast majority of the campaign through injury, only featuring 11 times in the Premier League, scoring three times at an average of one goal every 3.6 appearances.

However, the 26-year-old has made a huge impact during pre-season this summer, scoring three times and showcasing what he could be capable of under Enzo Maresca in 2024/25.

Nkunku could be helped by the signing of one player who could move to West London this summer after recent reported interest in the forward.

Chelsea interested in signing £150k-p/w talent this summer

According to CalcioNapoli24 via Sport Witness, Federico Chiesa could be on the move this summer, with one agent, Stefano Caira, confirming that Chelsea have registered an interest in signing the Juventus forward – who is deemed to be an "outgoing player" from the Old Lady.

The 26-year-old, who earns £150k-per-week, as per Capology, produced a tally of nine goals and two assists in his 33 Serie A appearances but doesn’t appear to be in the plans of new boss Thiago Motta – wanting to leave the Italian side as a result.

However, Maresca’s side aren’t the only Premier League outfit in the race for his signature, with Chiesa’s agent claiming West Ham and Manchester United have both also been tracking the situation of the Italian.

It’s a real shock to see the forward’s potential departure from Turin after his recent form in Italy’s top flight, but Juve’s loss could be Chelsea’s gain, with Chiesa producing numerous stats that would play perfectly into the hands of current Blues man Nkunku.

Why Chiesa would make Nkunku unplayable for Chelsea

Even though Todd Boehly has splashed the cash on attacking talents such as Mykhailo Mudryk and Raheem Sterling, the owner still wants reinforcements in forward areas to help Maresca have the best chance of being a success at Stamford Bridge.

Chiesa could be that player to provide the added quality in the final third, with his stats produced in Serie A over the last 12 months undoubtedly helping Nkunku build on his impressive form during pre-season.

Chelsea forward Christopher Nkunku

The fleet-footed "galactico", as dubbed by data analyst Ben Mattinson, registered 4.8 shot-creating actions and 2.2 key passes per 90 last season, with such figures undoubtedly providing the French forward with more frequent opportunities in the final third.

He also managed 2.9 progressive passes and 4.6 progressive carries per 90, showcasing his ability to drive with the ball into attacking areas, undoubtedly handing Nkunku the chance to create carnage for Chelsea in the near future.

Whilst the club already have a huge amount of options at Maresca’s disposal, Chiesa would undoubtedly provide a new option to the new boss and one that could bring added quality – helping Nkunku thrive after his big-money move.

He’s enjoyed a difficult start to life in west London, but the former RB Leipzig talent has the opportunity to form an excellent partnership with the Italian winger should he arrive at Stamford Bridge.

Jofra Archer likely to miss first half of IPL 2021

Fast bowler set to return to England post T20I series against India as Rajasthan Royals await formal update from ECB on his availability

Nagraj Gollapudi20-Mar-2021

Jofra Archer was named MVP of IPL 2020•BCCI

Jofra Archer is set to miss at least the first half of IPL 2021 for the Rajasthan Royals, as the ECB has decided to send him back home from India to tend to an elbow condition, which had kept him out of the second and fourth Tests against India.ESPNcricinfo understands that Archer will return to England after the T20I series, and will not feature in the three-match ODI series against India to be played between March 23 and 29. The IPL is scheduled to start on April 9.It is understood that on returning home, Archer, who has an ECB central contract to play in all three formats, is going to be administered one more injection in his right elbow before being assessed by the ECB medical staff around mid-April, after which a call would be taken on whether he would return to India for the IPL or not.Although the Royals have not issued a public statement, it is understood they have been updated about Archer’s availability, or the lack of it.England captain Eoin Morgan said that the final decision would rest with the medical team keeping the long term in mind, adding that Archer’s injury had “definitely gotten worse”.”We’re not quite sure yet,” Morgan told the press after the fifth T20I in Ahmedabad. “We’re going to wait until tonight and tomorrow to see how Jofra has pulled up. He’s clearly had a progressive injury that has become worse and does need attention, so it’ll be over to our medical team to make a decision and hopefully the decision that Jofra comes to will be the best for us in the long term.”I think it’s rare when a bowler isn’t managing pain – what they do is a tough job and if you ask any of them, are they ever pain-free, it’s a pretty rare instance if they say yes. Most of our bowlers are normally carrying niggles but certainly Jofra’s situation has definitely got worse, so it does need attention.”Archer was bought by the Royals in the 2018 auction for INR 7.2 crore (US$ 986,000 approx.) and the fast bowler has justified the high price by delivering some of the best spells of fast bowling in the tournament, finishing as the MVP in 2020. Although the Royals have not ruled out Archer returning for the second half of the tournament, it is understood the franchise is considering back-up plans – including finding a replacement – but are waiting for a formal communication from the ECB.Related

The overseas fast-bowling contingent at the Royals includes Ben Stokes, Mustafizur Rahman, Andrew Tye and Chris Morris. Morris was picked up by the Royals for INR 16.25 crore (US$ 2.226m approx.) at the 2021 auction, making him the most expensive player in the history of the IPL.Having missed the second Test in Chennai, Archer sat out the final Test in Ahmedabad as the elbow injury flared up, initially casting doubts over his availability for the five-match T20I series, which concludes on SaturdayAfter the Test series defeat, England head coach Chris Silverwood had conceded that Archer’s elbow injury was a concern. Although he ruled out surgery, Silverwood had said that the ECB medical staff was “talking about how we deal with this [issue in the] long-term”.Archer received a painkilling injection to the right elbow immediately after the first Test of the India series. In a media release, the ECB had pointed out that the injury was separate to the stress fracture he had suffered during the South Africa tour in January 2020, which had then ruled him out of the Sri Lanka tour and IPL 2020, both of which ended up being postponed. England are particularly keen to manage Archer carefully with an eye on the T20 World Cup and the Ashes later this year, both of which are long-term priorities.Archer pledged after the first T20I to “do everything in my power to make sure that I am going to the World Cup and the Ashes”, and said in an in-house interview on Friday: “Managing yourself is going to become more important than ever to make sure that you’re still fit or fully fit when that time comes”.England are yet to name their squad for the ODI series, which starts on Tuesday, March 23 in Pune, but have not flown any players out to India since the start of the T20Is. As a result, the ODI squad will be selected from the same group of 18 currently in India – the 16-man T20I squad, plus two reserves in Jake Ball and Matt Parkinson.

Worth more than Zubimendi: Liverpool hit gold with Klopp’s "superstar"

Liverpool supporters are venting their frustrations as the summer transfer window trundles into the final few weeks, with not a signing in sight to strengthen Arne Slot's newly-shaped system.

Replacing Jurgen Klopp is a task comparable to scaling Anfield with your bare hands, but the easygoing Dutchman has the wits and the tactical wherewithal to enjoy a fruitful tenure on Merseyside.

Only, he's yet to see a player welcomed to the first-team fold. Up until recent events, trepidation around this matter was somewhat undue – Liverpool were biding their time throughout June and July as Slot familiarised himself with his new outfit and determined the key point of concern.

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot

Last month, Richard Hughes spoke of an August "crescendo" that has yet to materialise, with Liverpool's new sporting director left hot under the collar after Martin Zubimendi rejected the Premier League team's advances despite leaning toward leaving Real Sociedad initially.

This has placed the Reds in a disquieting position, with Wataru Endo seemingly not suited to Slot's ball-playing, progressive system.

Liverpool's rejection response

Slot has underlined concerns around the base of his Anfield engine room and will be hoping to see someone fitting walk through the door.

Zubimendi has earned much acclaim for his performances in La Liga, with Spanish football expert Sid Lowe claiming that "he is just about as good a deep-lying midfielder there is in Europe, apart from maybe Rodri".

Spain's Euro 2024-winning manager Luis de la Fuente has also called him "one of the best midfielders in the world", so perhaps it's somewhat justifiable that Hughes and co are being circumspect in moving for an alternative.

Martin Zubimendi

The Athletic's David Ornstein has confirmed that Liverpool "are not expecting to sign" an alternative No. 6, but with the overriding consensus suggesting that this would be a fatal mistake, that could surely change in the weeks to come.

If not, Liverpool will have to make do with Endo, who signed from Stuttgart for £16m in a surprise move one year ago after efforts to sign Romeo Lavia and Moises Caicedo were foiled by Chelsea.

That said, there is another man who has proved himself in the sitting midfield role: Alexis Mac Allister.

Where Alexis Mac Allister could play this season

Liverpool signed Mac Allister from Brighton & Hove Albion in a £35m deal last summer, kickstarting a much-needed midfield rebuild ahead of Jurgen Klopp's final term at the helm.

Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister

Arriving with a World Cup gold medal under his belt and a talismanic role in Brighton's rise in the Premier League, clinching Europa League football in 2022/23.

The £150k-per-week ace completed 33 matches for Liverpool in the Premier League last term, as per Sofascore, posting five goals and five assists, completing 88% of his passes and averaging 1.4 key passes, 3.4 tackles, 5.9 successful duels and 5.9 ball recoveries per game.

He might prefer to play in a looser midfield role, having been hailed as a "superstar" by pundit Joe Cole for his technical quality, even claiming that he "can play anywhere". One needs only take a look at his frightening striking power and ability to carve open the steeliest of defences.

His defensive quality is equally as admirable but performances across the 2023/24 campaign illustrated the gains to be made from playing him alongside one tasked with a more defensive-minded partner.

Still, 3.4 tackles per game and an athletic strength that surpasses the lion's share of midfielders across Europe led Klopp to play him at the base last year, something that hardly dented his mark as one of the finest in the business.

Alexis Mac Allister's transfer value in 2024

Mac Allister wasn't crowned Liverpool's Player of the Season for 2023/24 (that honour went to the evergreen Mohamed Salah) but he couldn't have done much more across a string-pulling, metronomic campaign.

Alexis Mac Allister for Liverpool

It's remarkable, in hindsight, that he was purchased for an astute £35m – Fabrizio Romano hailed the transfer a "bargain" – and his present market value reflects that.

According to Transfermarkt's market-price-evaluating model, the Argentina international is worth €75m (£64m), which marks him as one of Liverpool's most valuable players.

Dominik Szbosozlai, for example, joined the Anfield side from RB Leipzig last summer after his £60m release clause was met, while Transfermarkt consider him to be at the same value as his South American counterpart: €75m (£64m).

What about Zubimendi? Liverpool were willing to spend €60m (£51m) on the Euro 2024 champion – the equivalent of the 25-year-old's release clause – but he has opted to remain with his boyhood club following fierce Sociedad efforts to keep him at the club.

Should an alternative to Zubimendi not be welcomed before September, Liverpool will have failed to sign a new deep-lying midfielder for three successive seasons, something that could prove to be a catastrophic failure at the dawn of an exciting new era.

Mac Allister could fill that hole once again, sure, but while he's regarded as the creme de la creme, and while he's deservedly valued beyond that of Zubimendi, he might actually rise to a new level altogether if partnered with a specialist No. 6.
