Ben Coad claimed a superb 5 for 18 as Leicestershire were bowled out for 124 before tea during a seamer-friendly opening day of the Bob Willis Trophy clash at Emerald Headingley. The 26-year-old excelled with the new ball and returned after lunch for further success as Yorkshire made an encouraging start to their bid for a victory which could see them advance to the five-day Lord’s final later this month. They realistically need to win to topple leaders Derbyshire and finish top of the North Group. Then, they must finish as one of the two best group winners from the North, South and Central.Rain again played its part for the third successive four-day game on this ground, with Yorkshire closing on 36 for 2 from 12.1 overs of their reply. There was no play beyond 4pm and 28.5 overs lost.Second-placed Yorkshire know that if Derbyshire, who led the North Group by five points before the final round, beat Lancashire at Liverpool and accrue 20 points, there is nothing they can do.But for now, they will celebrate a highly impressive bowling display led by Coad, whose first wicket of Sam Evans was his 150th in first-class cricket in his 38th appearance. This is only his second game of the summer having suffered a torn oblique muscle in the opening round victory at Durham last month. It is the same situation for new ball partner Matthew Fisher (abdominal), who chipped in with 3 for 29 from 12 overs as swing and seam dominated under overcast Headingley skies.Stand-in captain Adam Lyth won the toss and elected to bowl. Lyth was captaining Yorkshire in place of Steve Patterson, who has been ruled out having suffered back spasms in the couple of days leading up to this fixture.Leicestershire, playing only for pride, slipped to 12 for 3 and 36 for 4 before reaching lunch on 52 for 4. Fisher claimed two of the first four wickets, while Coad and Duanne Olivier also struck.Fisher had Hassan Azad and Colin Ackermann lbw, while Coad also pinned Azad’s opening partner Sam Evans lbw. Olivier’s wicket came courtesy of a brilliant one-handed return catch to get rid of Harry Dearden.Four of Coad’s first six overs were maidens, and he continued to give Leicestershire’s batsmen nothing after lunch and got more rewards as a result. Coad had Rishi Patel caught at second slip by Lyth. He then trapped Arron Lilley lbw and wrapped up the innings by getting wicketkeeper Harry Swindells caught behind by Jonny Tattersall and Alex Evans caught by Lyth, the latter two in successive balls. In between, Fisher had Ben Mike caught at third slip by Harry Brook, who also held on in the same position as Olivier got fellow South African Dieter Klein.Swindells offered Leicestershire’s only significant resistance with a polished 36, including three successive fours in one Olivier over. But they were given a significant boost inside the first three overs of the Yorkshire reply after tea, with Alex Evans and Klein removing Tom Kohler-Cadmore and Lyth as Yorkshire slipped to 4 for 2. Kohler-Cadmore was caught at square-leg by Sam Evans and Lyth edged behind to Swindells. Will Fraine and Tom Loten steadied the ship before rain forced the players off the field and brought a premature end to an absorbing day’s play. Umpires Peter Hartley and James Middlebrook abandoned the day at 5.20pm.

Man City could sign their next Stones in £34m "bulldozer"

Manchester City just won their fourth Premier League title in a row, pipping Arsenal to the trophy on the last day of the season.

City conceded 34 goals in their 38 Premier League games, the second-best defensive record in the league, behind only Arsenal who conceded 29, with the best defensive record in the league.

Kevin De Bruyne.

Therefore, the perfectionist that Pep Guardiola is, it wouldn't be surprising to see them target defensive re-enforcement, to ensure Arsenal don't pull away from them with defensive quality. But who could they go for?

Manchester City transfer news

According to reports by James Horncastle from The Athletic, Manchester City are one of the "curious" clubs when it comes to the future of Bologna defender Ricardo Calafiori.

It is also reported Thiago Motta wants Calafiori to join him at Juventus, whilst Bayern Munich have also made inquiries. However, Bologna do not want to lose him, understandably so given the talent at his feet, and according to other reports have placed a £34m price tag on his head.

Bologna defender Riccardo Calafiori

Horncastle has previously stated that "he is the future of centre-back play" when speaking about the Italian defender.

How Calafiori compares to John Stones

Further described as "Italy's John Stones" by Horncastle, the instant comparison you can draw between the City defender and Calafiori is their quality on the ball, and therefore, their ability to step into midfield from central defence, as Guardiola can often ask of his players.

Calafiori completes 1.07 progressive carries per 90, and 0.5 successful take-ons per 90, highlighting his ability to carry the ball from defense. Stones in comparison, completes 1.35 progressive carries per 90, bettering the Italian but only just. However, he only completes 0.06 successful take-ons per 90, showing this isn't quite a familiar part of his game to drive forward with the ball when challenged by an opposition player.

Both players possess the ability to affect the game in all areas, whilst starting in central defence, and this is highlighted by their top-tier attacking numbers. The Italian produces 1.76 shot-creating actions per 90, a stat you would usually look at when analysing your more creative and attack-minded players.

Stones, is even better in this regard, producing 1.92 shot-creating actions per 90, ranking in the top 1% of defenders for this metric on Fbref.

Whilst adding the attacking thrust and composure on the ball when stepping into midfield that Stones possesses, the Italian also brings a well-polished defensive game, making 1.8 tackles per 90, 1.92 interceptions per 90, and 1.46 blocks per 90, all ranking in the top 30% amongst defenders for these metrics.

The Manchester City man also spent sustained periods of time out due to injury, playing only 16 Premier League games last campaign, and only 23 the season before that. Meanwhile, the 22-year-old Bologna defender played 30 of the 38 games in Serie A, being an ever-present part of the backline that secured them a Champions League spot.

john-stones-chelsea-transfer-gossip-everton-manchester-city-amadou-onana

As important as the former Everton man is for Guardiola's system, is there a case for bringing in a player with similar on-ball qualities, with better defensive numbers and a higher availability rate?

If there is, Calafiori is definitely one that would interest Guardiola based on the way he wants his team to play, as Spalletti himself stated, "When you have the ball, you are a defender. When he has it, you have to chase him, because he wants to go and score."

Brendon McCullum: 'We were just a little timid in our approach'

McCullum felt the Knight Riders batsmen had ceded control of the game to Siraj by not being proactive enough

KKR coach McCullum praises RCB’s bowling

Brendon McCullum, the Kolkata Knight Riders coach, has said the team “just wasn’t good enough” with the bat and had shown a “timid” approach in their eight-wicket loss to the Royal Challengers Bangalore. The Knight Riders were undone by Mohammed Siraj’s 3 for 8 in four overs and made only 84 for 8 after choosing to bat, with the Royal Challengers cruising to victory in 13.3 overs. The result kept the Knight Riders in fourth place on the IPL 2020 points table, but with a significant hit on their net run rate, which now stands at a negative -0.828.”In all honesty, I didn’t think there was a lot in the wicket. Siraj obviously bowled well and [Chris] Morris at times also. But if anything, we were just a little timid in our approach,” McCullum said at the press conference. “That’s a bit frustrating because we spoke at length before the game about trying to be positive and show some strong intent. So that’s something we’ll have to address in the next few days.”Before the game we talked about wanting to show some strong intent with the batting at the top of the order. Unfortunately tonight, if anything we probably lacked intent. So that’s something we’re going to have to address. I think RCB were very good tonight and we were very poor with bat in hand. You’re not going to win too many games from 40 for 6. It was a poor night with the bat but we’ve got to bounce back because we’ve got another game in a few days. That could be the nature of this tournament as well, with the conditions being slightly challenging at times. You’ve got to find a way to still pick yourself up and try and get a result next game, even after a poor one.”McCullum felt the Knight Riders batsmen had ceded control of the game to Siraj by not being proactive enough. Siraj varied his lines, kept the ball on a length or just short of it often, and found movement too. No batsman was able to get into any rhythm against him.”I think Mohammed Siraj bowled excellent lines and lengths. He was out to present the seam and asked a few questions of us, questions which in the past we would have probably answered better than we did tonight,” McCullum said.”There’s many things you can do [to counter good bowling]. You can use your crease: go laterally, advance, or go deeper in your crease. You can try and apply a little bit of pressure somehow, but we weren’t able to do any of those tonight. That’s something we’ll discuss, how as batsmen you’re able to enter the game, show strong presence and try to turn the pressure a little bit back on the opposition, particularly in slightly helpful conditions for the seamers.”McCullum contrasted his own batsmen’s performance with the approach shown by Aaron Finch for the Royal Challengers. While Finch made only 16 off 21, he was walking down the pitch constantly, not only forcing bowlers to bowl alternate lengths but also minimising the risk of an lbw.”None of our top order batsmen were able to get anything going,” McCullum said. “If we flip that over and look at how even Aaron Finch – I know he didn’t set the world on fire tonight but he still showed intent. He was walking down the wicket, he was asking some different questions of us as bowlers and trying to take out a mode of dismissal. Sometimes that’s what you have to do, you’ve got to be a little bit creative to be able to get yourself into the game. It wasn’t to be tonight, but there’ll be some good lessons for some of our guys. We’re going to have to find a way to be able to actually enter the game because you can’t be in a situation like you were at 40 for 6 and expect to win games of cricket.”The Knight Riders still have four games in hand, and with 10 points on the board they are still in the thick of the qualifying race.”We’re still fourth in the tournament, which is very fortunate for us. Destiny is still very much in our own hands,” McCullum said. “We’ve just got to tidy up those areas where we were deficient tonight and make sure we improve on our performance.”I’ve said all the way along, as long as our morale stays high and our belief within the dressing room stays high, then we have the talent within our set-up, and the intelligence and the quality of players, to be able to go deep in the tournament. This is going to affect a little bit in terms of our confidence and [we need to] work hard on ensuring our morale doesn’t drop. At the same time, having those honest conversations around how we improve. But I still firmly believe we have a side which can be there come finals time. We just need to improve slightly.”

The CSA’s Members’ Council – the highest-decision making authority in the game made up of the 14 provincial affiliate presidents – and South Africa’s sports minister Nathi Mthethwa held a “constructive” meeting on Tuesday, which was the deadline for the organisation to convince Mthethwa why he should not intervene in their affairs.Mthethwa was satisfied with the progress made at CSA after the entire board stood down on Monday. An interim board will be now be constituted, with further details expected by the end of the week.Mthethwa also met with the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC), who CSA has previously refused to comply with, as well as the South African Cricketers Association (SACA) to “share the outcomes of the meeting with CSA for the purpose of keeping key role players abreast of the latest developments,” according to a ministerial statement issued on Wednesday morning. It is not clear if CSA will now work with SASCOC, who demanded the board and executive stand down while an investigation is conducted into CSA’s affairs and unrestricted access to the forensic report used to fire former CEO Thabang Moroe. SASCOC also wanted CSA to foot the bill for a task team that would stand in for the organisation’s leadership while issues around governance are resolved. This team could now take the structure of an interim board.ESPNcricinfo understands that the minister will be involved in the process of choosing the members of the interim board, which could include prominent South Africans in business and former players. For now, CSA is represented by a board of four Members’ Council participants – Rihan Richards (who is also the acting Members Council president), Zola Thamae, John Mogodi and Donovan May. Thamae, Mogodi and May were all part of the board that stood down.

Derby in six-way battle to sign "accomplished" trophy-winning 25 y/o ace

Derby County are reportedly battling with five other EFL clubs to complete the signing of an "accomplished" new defender in the summer transfer window.

Derby planning for Championship return

The Rams enjoyed a triumphant 2023/24 season, sealing promotion from League One and ensuring they returned to the Championship for the first time since the 2021/22 campaign. It was a tremendous effort from Paul Warne and his players, but the key now is to kick on in the second tier, ensuring that they don't suffer a quickfire relegation back to where they were last term.

In order for that to happen, Derby will need to make a number of important signings in the summer transfer window, and they have been linked with plenty of individuals of late.

Versatile Sheffield United ace Ben Osborn has been touted as a standout addition for the Rams in the coming weeks and months, and it now even looks as though a move is all but done, with a medical reportedly booked in.

On the flip side, some current Rams players could move on before next season gets underway, with veteran striker James Collins backed to be moved on, as was the case with highest-earner Conor Hourihane.

Derby want in-demand new defender

According to a fresh claim from HITC, Derby are one of six EFL clubs interested in signing Gateshead defender Kenton Richardson in the summer window.

A reunion with Sunderland is mooted in the report, having left the Black Cats back in 2022, while Oxford United, Peterborough United, Barnsley and Notts County are all mentioned as potential suitors, too.

Richardson may not be the renowned type of player that many Derby fans will want to see come in this summer, but he could be an interesting signing who is coming into the peak years of his career. The 25-year-old has proven to be a rock at the heart of Gateshead's defence, and his performances helped them secure FA Trophy glory at Wembley back in May, following a penalty shootout win over Solihull Moors.

Meanwhile, he was once lauded by former Hartlepool manager Dave Jones during his stint there during his teenage years, with his ex-boss saying of him: "He’s only 17 but he looked accomplished too. What great experience that will have been for him."

Admittedly, Richardson isn't exactly experienced when it comes to the Championship, never featuring in the competition to date, but he has played once for England's C team and also made 20 appearances in League Two and the FA Cup combined, showing that he has some pedigree.

ByStephan Georgiou Sep 18, 2024

Perhaps most significant is the fact that the centre-back will be available on a free transfer at the end of this month, so even if he does join Derby and struggles to cut the mustard, the Rams won't have splashed out a huge sum of money on him. Essentially, it feels like a relatively cheap risk worth taking, giving Warne more defensive options in the process.

Chelsea prepared to bid for £208,000-a-week star after Dewsbury-Hall deal

Chelsea are prepared to bid for a £208,000-a-week striker after sealing the deal for Leicester City midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, who will join in a £30 million move from the King Power Stadium.

Chelsea reach agreement with Leicester to sign Dewsbury-Hall

On Sunday, reliable transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano gave his famous 'here we go' as Dewsbury-Hall completed his switch to Stamford Bridge, coming after Chelsea entered the race to hijack Brighton's original deal for him.

Chelsea expect "complete" £20m star to travel for medical in coming weeks

The Blues are set to get their man.

The Seagulls were given the green light by Leicester to sign their star midfielder with Jakub Moder going the other way, but when Chelsea inquired about Dewsbury-Hall, the move was hijacked – despite Brighton having even booked a medical for the Englishman.

Talks accelerated at a fast pace as Chelsea sought to back new head coach Enzo Maresca with the signing of a player he knows very well. Under the Italian last season, Dewsbury-Hall racked up 12 goals and 15 assists for Leicester in all competitions – standing out as one of their most crucial assets who helped them achieve immediate promotion back to the Premier League.

After rounds of negotiations over the weekend, Chelsea eventually reached their agreement to sign Dewsbury-Hall for £30 million, with Maresca now set for a reunion.

It's been a very busy transfer window for Todd Boehly and Chelsea in these early weeks, who also confirmed the arrivals of Omari Kellyman in a £19 million switch from Aston Villa and young striker Marc Guiu in a £5 million deal from Barcelona.

Now, attention turns to who else they could bring in for Maresca begins his debut campaign at the Chelsea helm. Napoli striker Victor Osimhen is a player they've been repeatedly linked with in the build-up to this summer, and that interest is yet to die down.

Chelsea chiefs apparently believe Osimhen is the perfect striker for them, with reports out of Spain sharing the latest on their pursuit of the Nigerian.

Chelsea prepared to bid for Victor Osimhen after Dewsbury-Hall

One Spanish source backs claims that Chelsea believe he is the ideal solution to bolster Maresca's forward line.

They also state that Chelsea are willing to make a bid for Osimhen this summer, who could leave the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium for less than his £102 million release clause if talks are opened.

Osimhen signed a new deal last season which increased his pay packet to around £208,000-a-week, which included that exit clause for interested sides as well. Thus far, no team in Europe has moved to activate it – perhaps putting some pressure on Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis to consider a lower fee.
