AB de Villiers feeling 'in some of the best form of my career' as he joins Brisbane Heat

The South Africa batsman has arrived for the latter part of the BBL, eager to pass on his knowledge and experience

AB de Villiers has arrived in Australia for his long-awaited Big Bash stint with the Brisbane Heat feeling in some of the best form of his career and ready for the “big role” he has to play on and off the field.De Villiers replaces Tom Banton for the latter stages of the tournament with the Heat currently fifth in the table, having four wins and four defeats from their eight matches. It was a lengthy process to bring de Villiers to Australia with the chances of the signing having seemingly slipped away until the deal the was agreed in early October.De Villiers joins on the back of 325 runs at 46.42 and a strike-rate of 152.58 in the Mzansi Super League for Tshwane Spartans, who finished runner’s up.”I had a fantastic tournament in South Africa, had a few good knocks, felt in some of the best form of my career so hopefully we’ll see more of that in this tournament,” he said the morning after arriving in Brisbane ahead of his first match against the Adelaide Strikers on Tuesday.Even with so many matches behind him – 304 in all T20s – de Villiers admitted he still gets butterflies but believes that is a good thing and is ready to embrace a broader role with the Heat.”I’ve said it many times before, wherever I play around the world, whether it’s a club game or a World Cup semi-final, I feel the same pressure when I go out to bat,” he said. “I’ve always got that pressure I put on myself to perform at the best of my ability. I’ve done it so many times, it doesn’t guarantee success but I know what to expect, I know the butterflies are a good sign generally.”All I can do is go out and enjoy myself, make sure I have a good influence on my team-mates and make sure I have an impact on the game with bat in hand. Then there’s the fielding and the off-field stuff, I have big role to play as an individual and not just a cricketer.”The Heat captain Chris Lynn has urged team-mates to make use of every moment de Villiers is with them as they hunt for a place in the knockouts in what has so far been a topsy-turvy tournament.”Experience is everything, there were a couple of games where we needed that experience so to have him is just gold,” Lynn said. “We’ve got a young team and the guys are mad if they aren’t like a sponge over the next few weeks.””It’s a natural role for me,” de Villiers said. “I’m 35 and have played quite a bit of cricket around the world. I’d hate to think that I won’t have that kind of role. I had a similar role in South Africa. I enjoy guys asking me questions about my batting. Like to think we’ll help some of the youngsters understand what’s needed to achieve success.”Where de Villiers bats is yet to be determined with the Heat needing to reshape the order now that Banton has departed, but it is likely to be at No. 3 or 4. All eyes will be on the team if de Villiers and Lynn are at the crease together for any length of time. “It could be interesting,” de Villiers said. “I don’t know what to expect to be honest. I’ve a feeling it’s going to work and will be nice to watch.”Lynn, who was a key part in long project to get de Villiers to the Heat, was in no doubt of his standing. “In my opinion he’s probably the No. 1 entertaining batsman in the world. When he gets going he hits the ball 360 degrees whenever he wants. I believe he’s two steps ahead of the game compared to everyone else. I think he’s the best in the game and the way he thinks is totally different to other batters around the world.”

Pochettino must ditch Chelsea dud who lost the ball 21x v Sheff Utd

Chelsea were unable to make it three Premier League wins in a row after a late Oli McBurnie goal saw the Blues settle for a 2-2 draw despite leading the encounter for a large period.

Goals from Noni Madueke and Thiago Silva saw Mauricio Pochettino's side lead 2-1 until the 93rd minute when the Blades' striker popped up to secure a huge point for Chris Wilder's men.

The win would have seen Chelsea move to within a point of Newcastle United with a game in hand, but the club currently sit ninth in the Premier League, three points off Eddie Howe's side and with a considerably worse goal difference.

The performance at Bramall Lane was yet another disappointing one, with boss Pochettino needing to drop one player after his display against the strugglers.

Nicolas Jackson's stats against Sheffield United

In what was an all-round disappointing performance from Pochettino's side, striker Nicolas Jackson had one of his worst games in recent weeks, with the Senegalese forward losing eight duels during the draw – the most of any player on the pitch.

The Chelsea frontman also lost possession 21 times during his 89 minutes for the Blues, with Jackson losing the ball more than any other of his teammates.

The 22-year-old was dribbled past three times by the Blades' defenders, with the attacker unable to stop the likes of Anel Ahmedhodzic and Jack Robinson from driving the ball out from the back.

Jackson has now gone three Premier League games without a goal, after a run of two goals in as many matches, with his form taking a nose dive in recent outings.

His display in Yorkshire yesterday won't have done the youngster any favours, with Pochettino needing to drop the striker ahead of the club's next game against Everton a week today.

The man to replace Jackson in the final third

As demonstrated by how many times he lost possession against the Blades, Jackson isn't a hold-up striker, with the Senegal international liking to run the channels and get in behind.

However, the Blues may need to slightly alter their playstyle to allow another player to flourish at the top end of the pitch if the 22-year-old were to be dropped in the upcoming fixtures.

Pochettino could potentially turn to starman Cole Palmer, with the attacker demonstrating his finishing abilities with his 16 goals in 27 Premier League games this season.

As shown in his stat of 5.4 shot-creating actions per 90, as per FBref, the youngster can create problems in the attacking third with his eye for goal, potentially allowing him to play as a false nine under Poch.

Palmer also averages an 80% pass completion rate in the league this season, with both of his tallies considerably better than Jackson, who can only muster 2.8 and 78% respectively.

Given Chelsea's slim chances of achieving European football ahead of next season, coupled with their below-par performances, now is a great time for the Blues boss to experiment with his side and give other players an opportunity in a variety of different roles.

West Ham could unleash new European hero who’s as important as Bowen

West Ham United manager David Moyes made a host of changes last weekend, presumably in preparation for this evening's clash against Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League.

Trailing 2-0 after the first leg, the indomitable Bundesliga champions fashioning two late goals, the Hammers are up against it. A two-goal lead is needed at full-time just to stay in the tie. Xabi Alonso's team have not lost all season. West Ham have two wins in nine.

Kurt Zouma for West Ham

But defeat at home against Fulham in the Premier League was simultaneously a blow to the most probable route into continental competition next season and United's confidence, which will be key against Die Werkself.

Still, London Stadium will bring the noise and West Ham produced a promising performance last Thursday – Moyes said his squad has "half a chance", which might just be enough.

West Ham team news

Lucas Paqueta got himself suspended for this one in the first leg in a crushing blow to West Ham's chances of qualification. The absence of the club's creative linchpin will be keenly felt.

Tough-tackling defender Emerson Palmieri will also be absent due to suspension in a hammer blow to Moyes' Irons, while Konstantinos Mavropanos will miss out with injury.

However, in a huge boost, Moyes has confirmed that talisman Jarrod Bowen is fit to face Bayer Leverkusen after returning to training on Wednesday after injury.

He will be a massive threat, but not the only one who could cause problems tonight.

Why West Ham must unleash Tomas Soucek

The man in question is Tomas Soucek, who has been praised for his "sensational" motivating, leadership qualities by his manager, something that will be paramount ahead of the European clash.

Bowen has scored 19 goals and added eight assists from 40 matches for West Ham this season and the visitors will likely view him as the biggest threat. After all, he was the scorer of the Hammers' winning goal in the Conference League final. Soucek is just as important, however, potentially striking from sitting deep and at the centre of the action if his side is to prevail.

This season, in all competitions, Soucek, aged 29, has posted nine goals, with his innate ability to find opportunities and take them providing Moyes' side with an invaluable added dimension.

On top of this, the Czech midfielder ranks among the top 11% of positional peers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for interceptions and the top 1% for clearances and aerial duels won per 90, as per FBref.

The Athletic's Roshane Thomas remarked that Soucek had "rediscovered his verve to become West Ham's talisman" this season, having flattered to deceive across large portions of the 2022/23 campaign.

His blend of attacking and defensive attributes bespeak his importance and influence, capable of contributing in many different ways and posing a problem against Alonso's side.

Furthermore, he was crucial in rebuffing the German team last week, dropping deep to add a layer of protection in the defensive third, blocking three shots, making two interceptions and making three crucial clearances, as per Sofascore.

West Ham midfielder Tomas Soucek

It won't be easy; Leverkusen have probably been the best team in Europe this season and are charging toward an undefeated treble, but with Soucek's industriousness used to quell the beast in the first half, his rangy goalscoring prowess could be activated after the break to find space and fire his side toward victory.

Meg Lanning uses stranger's swimming pool to ease back condition

It’s an issue she doesn’t get any warning about, and when it occurs she is quick to head to the swimming pool

Andrew McGlashan04-Feb-2020Australia captain Meg Lanning went to extraordinary lengths to ease her back condition in Canberra at the weekend. The problem flares up for Lanning from time to time and it happened towards the end of the match against England on Saturday, stopping her fielding in the Super Over which Australia went on to lose, and when it occurs she is quick to head to the swimming pool to ease the problem. The issue for her on Saturday was that it was late in the evening and there wasn’t a pool available – until a helpful hotel employee stepped in to save the day.”A nice lady at the reception of our hotel said they had a pool at her parents’ house five minutes away from the hotel so me, physio Kate and security headed there, a random’s house, to use their pool on a Saturday night,” Lanning revealed in Melbourne on Tuesday. “I was very embarrassed, I really couldn’t believe it was actually happening, but they were really lovely and welcomed us, made it very easy so very thankful they let me use it.”The amount of time Lanning spends in the pool when her back causes problems has also earned her a nickname of one of Australia’s Olympic greats. “I’ve got the nickname Susie O’Neill because I’ve become a swimmer which I don’t usually do,” Lanning said at an event to promote the #FILLTHEMCG campaign ahead of the T20 World Cup.The helpful people were at the game against India the following day – which Lanning sat out of as a further precaution leaving Rachael Haynes to captain the team – and came away with a signed cap and many thanks from a grateful captain. It was the third match since October 2018 Lanning missed due to the back issue, which she doesn’t get any warning about, but is confident of being fit for Melbourne leg of the tri-series when it resumes for Australia on Saturday.”It’s going well, we’ll have a couple of days for it to settle down, we’ll get back into training and hopefully all goes well and I’ll be right for the weekend,” she said. “It’s something that pops its head up out of nowhere, I’m still struggling how it happened on the weekend, it’s really frustrating, there’s no real warning signs. It does settle down reasonably quickly which is a good thing, hopefully I’ll be back soon.”

PRESSÃO DO REMO NO INÍCIO

Tubarão 1 a 0.

Majumdar, fast bowlers take Bengal into first Ranji Trophy final since 2006-07

Karnataka lose last seven wickets in 18 overs to crash out of the semi-finals for the third consecutive season

Varun Shetty in Kolkata03-Mar-2020

A small crowd sang chants for the hosts throughout the morning session at Eden Gardens as Bengal closed out Karnataka’s chase to qualify for their first Ranji Trophy final since the 2006-07 season.Karnataka began the day 98 for 3 with overnight batsmen Devdutt Padikkal and Manish Pandey, needing 254 for a win, but fast bowler Mukesh Kumar erased any thoughts of a fight with a relentless attacking spell, picking up four wickets in five overs to expose Karnataka’s lower-order well inside an hour of play.In a match where the opening hour has produced collapses every day, Karnataka would have hoped Pandey – their most experienced batsman – and Padikkal, who had made Karnataka’s only fifty of the match the evening before, could survive against pace attack that has barely given them any leeway all match. But into only third over of the day, Kumar set Pandey up with incoming deliveries before getting one to straighten from a corridor line and have him push for an outside edge to the keeper. In this next over, he had KV Siddharth play a similar shot to have him caught in the slips and was on a hat-trick after trapping Sharath Srinivas right in front next ball. At six down, Karnataka’s hopes rested squarely on Padikkal and allrounder K Gowtham, but Kumar wasn’t done. He switched to around the wicket and had the left-handed Padikkal caught behind in much the same way he had done to Pandey earlier. At 118 for 7, Karnataka made the decision to throw their bats around but the novelty of a few sweetly struck slogs wore thin as Bengal’s players roused the crowd as they came closer and closer to a historic win.Ishan Porel accounted for Gowtham and in the seventh over of an uninterrupted nine-over spell, Kumar got Ronit More for his fifth wicket of the day. Karnataka lost their last seven wickets in 18 overs to crash out in the semi-final round for the third consecutive season. Kumar finished with his third five-wicket haul of the season, and career-best figures of 6-61.It was a tame finish to the season for Karnataka, who were eyeing a treble after winning both limited-overs trophies before the Ranji Trophy, and were strongly placed after winning the toss and reducing Bengal to 67 for 6 on the first day. But Anustup Majumdar’s unbeaten 149, which earned him Player of the match, rallied the lower order and helped Bengal to 312, an anomaly of a score on a challenging surface that neither team could even come close to for the rest of the game.
