Netherlands seamers blow Namibia away for 96

Ten Doeschate rescued Netherlands from 66 for 4 to help them post a competitive total in the first innings. After that, their pacers ran through Namibia

Netherlands became the first team at the T20 World Cup Qualifiers to win their first two games, defeating Namibia by 44 runs to move to the top of the Group A points table, albeit temporarily.Paul van Meekeren, the Netherlands medium-pacer, followed up his three-for on Friday with another three-wicket haul today. His dismissals of Namibia’s top-scorer Craig Williams for 27, JJ Smit and Zhivago Groenewald ensured that he raised his hands for another Player-of-the-Match Award.Namibia were bowled out for 96 in 19 overs, chasing 141 for victory. Van Meekeren was assisted by three wickets from Netherlands pacer Brandon Glover, who ran through the Namibia lower-middle order, and two scalps from left-arm pacer Fred Klaassen. That Netherlands reached 140 in the first innings was courtesy their No. 5 Ryan ten Doeschate. The veteran struck 59 after Netherlands were reduced to 66 for 4 at one stage, collecting four fours and a six in his innings. Namibia’s left-arm seamer Jan Frylinck had taken three top-order wickets to rattle Netherlands early, and it seemed that Netherlands may struggle to cross 120, but a late burst from ten Doeschate and wicketkepeer Scott Edwards (six-ball nine) took them to 140. It was eventually more than enough, with Namibia suffering a big loss in their opening match of the competition.

Update on Newcastle’s interest in Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale

Newcastle United are believed to be back in the race to sign a "phenomenal" player this summer, with Eddie Howe personally a big admirer of him.

Newcastle transfer news

PIF are expected to have the cash available to make some significant signings at the end of the season despite Financial Fair Play pressure, as they look to kick on after a poor campaign overall. It looks as though Howe is targeting players all over the pitch, looking to build a more formidable squad that is capable of handling the many injuries that have come their way throughout the 2023/24 campaign.

Juventus youngster Samuel Iling-Junior is a player who is wanted by various Premier League clubs, including Everton and Tottenham, and Newcastle are also very much in the mix to sign him. The Englishman can excel at left-back and in a more attacking role, and could be viewed as a long-term replacement for Dan Burn, as well as providing competition further up the field.

Omar Marmoush is another individual who is reportedly wanted by the Magpies in the summer transfer window, having led the line impressively for Eintracht Frankfurt this season. He has scored 10 goals in 20 starts in the Bundesliga, and is being eyed up as an exciting strike partner for Alexander Isak, who remains a key figure moving forward.

Links surrounding a move for Italy and Juve winger Federico Chiesa are also refusing to go away, with the attacker out of contract in Turin next year, meaning the Serie A giants could be willing to part ways with him in 2024.

Newcastle still want to sign "phenomenal" goalkeeper

According to a new update from The Daily Mail, Newcastle are back in the race to sign Aaron Ramsdale in the summer transfer window, as the Arsenal goalkeeper looks likely to seal a move away from the Emirates. He has been linked with a switch to St James' Park in the past but the Gunners didn't want to sell him to a rival, so that seems to have now changed.

The Magpies have reportedly "rekindled their interest" in the Englishman, who is "assessing his options" after losing his place to David Raya throughout this season. Howe is a "big admirer", having worked with him at Bournemouth.

There is no denying that Ramsdale's stock has fallen significantly over the past nine months or so, having impressed so much for Arsenal last season, en route to them nearly winning the Premier League title. Mikel Arteta has made it clear that he favours Raya over him, and the England international will surely have decided that he needs to move on in the summer.

The 25-year-old could certainly be a strong option for Newcastle, however, should a move appeal to him, providing great competition for Pope. Meanwhile, Gunners legend David Seaman said of him last year: "People forget he’s only 24. So that is amazing for me because I didn’t join Arsenal until I was 26 – what he’s doing now at 24 is just phenomenal."

Admittedly, there is the risk that Ramsdale finds himself in the same position as he does at Arsenal, struggling to oust Pope at Newcastle, but he is a younger option than his compatriot, and his use of the ball is arguably better, which could give him an advantage, not to mention his past with Howe.

South Africa lose title sponsor as freefall continues

Standard Bank will end an association with cricket that began in 1998, the latest in a set of major moves that have been sparked by CSA’s governance problems

South Africa’s men’s team will lose their major sponsor, Standard Bank, who have opted not to renew their deal when it expires on April 30, 2020. This ends an association with cricket that dates back to 1998. Standard Bank sponsored South African cricket between 1998 and 2011, when it ended its sports associations with both cricket and football. The company then returned to cricket in 2016 and signed a four-year deal with Cricket South Africa (CSA) which is understood to be to the tune of R400 million (approx. US$ 27.3 million). Currently, they are only the title sponsor for the men’s team and their withdrawal is a direct result of administrative and governance problems at CSA which Standard Bank believes is tarnishing its reputation.”Standard Bank is committed to upholding the highest levels of leadership, integrity and governance. In light of recent developments at CSA, which are a culmination of long-standing problems which have damaged Standard Bank’s reputation, it has decided not to renew its partnership with CSA,” Thulani Sibeko, Standard Bank Group Chief Marketing and Communications Officer said in a statement released on Friday morning.Cricket South Africa’s protracted problems, which include a court battle against the South African Cricketers’ Association (SACA), projected financial losses of at least R654 million (approx. US$44.7 million) in the next four-year cycle, and the suspension of six staff members – three of whom were given notice of their suspension on Thursday – came to a head last weekend when five journalists’ accreditation was revoked during the Mzansi Super League (MSL).On Monday, CSA CEO Thabang Moroe confirmed CSA made the decision because they did not approve of the way these reporters were writing about the organisation. That same day, Standard Bank expressed its “grave concerns,” about the situation at CSA and demanded a meeting with CSA to “know about developments within CSA, especially those that relate to governance and conduct.”Sources told ESPNcricinfo that Standard Bank had been severe on CSA officials at the meeting and demanded they “clean up their act”. On Tuesday, Standard Bank issued a statement expressing its satisfaction that the meeting was “productive” and that they were left with the assurance that CSA would “urgently take the South African public into its confidence about the state of governance at the cricket administrative body”. It also said CSA had agreed to “urgently implement remedial actions to address stakeholder concerns, including the unacceptable manner in which it treated members of the media”.However, just three days later, Standard Bank has confirmed it will not renew the sponsorship deal. Between Tuesday and Friday, three independent directors, Professor Shirley Zinn, Iqbal Khan and Dawn Makhobo, have resigned from the CSA board, and there have been calls from all quarters for the CEO and President, Chris Nenzani to step down.Among the chorus has been former UCB managing director Ali Bacher, who was involved in mediating an agreement between Moroe and Graeme Smith, which would have seen Smith become director of cricket on October 1. Critiques have also emerged from development sponsors The Willowton Group and, last night, the Gauteng Cricket Board, the biggest provincial affiliate of CSA. In addition to the voices of dissent, CSA also faces allegations of credit card abuse from Khan, and a second commercial rights dispute with South African Cricketers’ Association (SACA) in as many months. Now, CSA has also lost its only major team sponsor after deals with Sunfoil and Momentum ended last year.

Poch must drop Chelsea’s 4/10 dud who lost 100% of his duels vs Burnley

Chelsea fans had to endure yet another disappointing Premier League result over the weekend, as the team managed to drop two points at home to a ten-man Burnley side.

Mauricio Pochettino has unfortunately overseen plenty of shocking performances this season, but Saturday's result is arguably the worst.

While Cole Palmer was once again the standout player for the Pensioners, there were plenty of terrible displays from his teammates, notably from Nicolas Jackson and one of the back four.

Jackson's performance against Burnley

What was Jackson's best performance this season? While there have been a fair few games in which the former Villarreal man has looked impressive, his best display was unquestionably away to Tottenham Hotspur. He brilliantly exploited the space left by their two red cards to score a Premier League hat-trick.

nicolas-jackson-transfer-gossip-chelsea-tottenham-hotspur-postecoglou-lille-jonathan-david

So, when he saw Lorenz Assingon see a second yellow card in just the 40th minute, he must've been licking his lips at the idea of 50 minutes against a relegation-threatened side reduced to ten men. Yet, he utterly failed to take advantage as the game progressed.

It's not like he didn't have the chances either. In his 95 minutes of action, the 22-year-old had two shots on target, a shot blocked, an expected goals figure of 0.74, missed two big chances, was offside twice, and took 24 touches.

His performance certainly didn't impress 90min's James Cormack, who, rather generously, awarded him a 6/10 on the day, writing that he was 'poor in the box.'

Ultimately, while Jackson has done reasonably well over the course of the whole season, racking up 12 goals and four assists in 33 games, his display against the Clarets just reaffirmed what many see as his biggest weakness: his profligate nature.

So, with chances much harder to come by against Manchester United tonight, he should be dropped to the bench alongside one of his defensive teammates.

Benoît Badiashile's performance against Burnley

Yes, the defender who started against Burnley on Saturday but should be starting on the bench against United tonight is Benoît Badiashile.

Benoit Badiashile Chelsea

The match against Vincent Kompany's side was Badiashile's first start since the FA Cup Fourth Round Replay against Aston Villa in early February, and it really did show in his performance.

He never really looked comfortable at the back despite the relatively weaker opposition in front of him.

Like his Senegalese teammate, the Frenchman's display certainly didn't impress Cormack.

However, where the journalist was quite generous to the forward, he was not so to the former AS Monaco man, awarding him a 4/10 on the day and writing, 'he was caught out at times positionally.'

This opinion is validated by the 23-year-old's match statistics, as in his 95 minutes of action, the "dreadful" defender, as Gabriel Agbonlahor previously described him, lost 100% of his six duels.

ByJack Salveson Holmes Apr 3, 2024

In all, it would make sense to drop him to the bench for tonight's game and start Thiago Silva in his place. On the other hand, Jackson could be replaced by several changes, with potentially even Palmer starting up top.

England's orgy of World Cup backslapping distracts from Test malaise

Defeat to Kolpak-ravaged South Africa is a wake-up call after the euphoria of World Cup win

George Dobell in Centurion29-Dec-2019

Faf du Plessis shakes hands with James Anderson after South Africa sealed victory•Associated Press

Maybe the timing was simply unfortunate, but supporters of England’s Test team could have been forgiven for scratching their heads in bewilderment earlier this week. For just around the time that England were being bowled out for 181 in their first innings in Centurion – the fifth time in 12 first innings they have failed to reach 200 this year – news came through that Colin Graves, the ECB chairman, had been awarded a CBE in the New Year’s Honours.Graves, to be fair, deserves some credit for the World Cup triumph. He was involved in the decision to prioritise white-ball cricket and the decision to shake up the coaching set-up. It’s completely reasonable to recognise and reward that. But if he deserves credit for that, he also needs to take some responsibility for the decline in England’s first-class system. And as England slipped to another Test defeat – their sixth in a year that has included just four victories – the poverty of their red-ball game was betrayed once more. It is increasingly hard to deny the assertion that England’s limited-overs progress has been made at the expense of their Test form. This is, you may recall, the first time this century that England have finished a year without a Test series victory. And as the Test year ends just as it started, with a resounding defeat at the hands of a rival who would dearly love the resources England enjoy, it becomes ever harder to sustain the argument that England are a good team on a tough run. If something keeps happening, it’s not an aberration. It’s reality. The truth is, England are a modest Test team in decline. Players who should have reaching their peak around now – Jonny Bairstow, Moeen Ali, Jos Buttler to name but three – are in danger of being washed away. The generation who might have been pushing for their places – Haseeb Hameed, Ben Duckett and James Vince – have not progressed as anticipated, and there is such a dearth of spin-bowling talent, that England are about to take a punt on one of two men who is far from sure of selection in their first-choice county side. It really is quite a mess.Jonny Bairstow drove loosely to be caught at gully•Associated Press

There is a bright side to all this. Just as it took the rock bottom of the 2015 World Cup to realise that change was necessary in England’s limited-overs cricket, so we are coming to a time when England may be humiliated into acknowledging the extent of their problems in Test cricket. They’re really not very good at it. The sooner that is realised, the sooner change will be embraced. A lowly finish in the World Test Championship might provide just such a wake-up call. And what will that change look like? It will see Championship cricket – two- or three-division Championship cricket involving promotion and relegation – played throughout the season. It will see the white-ball window closed and red-ball cricket played in conditions where fast bowlers and spinners are necessary. It will see wickets prepared which better reflect the Test game – hybrid wickets prepared by centrally contracted groundsmen, if necessary – and it will see, in general terms, the domestic first-class competition nurtured and valued and protected. If the Championship is strong, with intense, high-quality, consequence-laden cricket, the strength of the Test team will follow. We should know this already. The England side that rose to No. 1 in the world rankings included four men who scored centuries on Test debut (Andrew Strauss, Alastair Cook, Jonathan Trott and Matt Prior), two more (Kevin Pietersen and Ian Bell) who made half-centuries, one who claimed a five-wicket haul (James Anderson) and one who claimed two wickets in his first over (Graeme Swann). All of them were developed in a county system described by Justin Langer as every bit as tough as any in which he played.Somewhere along the way – perhaps when it was decided broadcasters wanted a white-ball window; perhaps when it was decided the Championship was the competition that could be compromised to provide the best pitches for white-ball cricket; perhaps when we started to allow players to disappear to other leagues when they should be involved in domestic cricket – we diluted that system. And Graves and co. are as responsible for those incremental steps just as much as they are responsible for the World Cup success. Not all the blame for such performances can be put at the door of administrators, though. While captain and coach defended the decision to insert South Africa on the first day, the fact is that batting became substantially more difficult on the fourth day as the bounce became increasingly uneven. So while it’s true that England’s bowlers – who were, you will recall, returning from illness and injury – didn’t take full advantage of conditions, it was always a high-risk policy to bat last on a surface with a reputation for deterioration. So while England’s bowlers will reflect that there were periods – particularly on the third morning – where they could have retained their lengths and composure somewhat better, they did, for only the second time in six away Tests, claim 20 wickets.England’s batting is probably even more of a concern. In the first innings they suffered a collapse in which they lost seven wickets for 39 runs; in the second a collapse of six for 46 runs. On nine occasions in 23 innings this year they have failed to make 200, and in three they have failed to make 90. Only once have they made 400 and only four times have they managed to score 300 in their first innings.ALSO READ: South Africa embrace the struggle to re-embark on road to successIt could have been worse, too. The only two men to make half-centuries in the match for England were both dropped early in their innings (Joe Denly on 0 and Rory Burns on 20; both, to be fair, went on to play admirably). Had either chance been taken, England may well not have made 150 in either innings. There’s a wider context here. In the last few months it has emerged that, as other nations plead for another ICC global tournament in the four-year cycle to help them with their funding issues (funding issues that render it almost impossible for them to retain the services of their best players) the ‘big three’ (India, England and Australia) are resisting on the basis that they may arrange an annual – yes, annual – tri-tournament just for their own benefit. It’s not especially easy to argue the morality of that approach. Or the long-term practicality. For if England, Australia and India allow Test cricket to wither in other regions – and you only have to see what has happened with the Test schedule involving Ireland in recent days to see how pertinent this is – the format will follow. Few will pay to see the same fixtures in repetition. And all the while, the drain of Kolpak talent continues. It’s incredible that South Africa are able to put out a competitive side despite all the players they have lost in recent times, let alone a victorious one.The point of all this? English cricket needs to take a good, hard look at itself. In the orgy of backslapping that has followed the World Cup win – and yes, it was a terrific performance – there is a danger that an eye has been taken off the wretched job that the ECB are doing to protect the Test game at home and abroad. They had this slap in the face coming.
