Newcastle interested in tough tackling midfielder who Roy Keane loves

Newcastle United are believed to be interested in signing a "very good" Premier League player who Roy Keane has praised for his ability to dictate games from midfield.

Newcastle transfer news

The Magpies are eyeing further business ahead of the summer transfer window, at which point Eddie Howe will understandably want to bolster his squad options.

One player who has been linked with a move to Newcastle is Arsenal attacking midfielder Emile Smith Rowe, who could look to leave this summer after struggling for minutes at the Emirates this season. He is seen as an alternative to Aston Villa ace Jacob Ramsey, who the Magpies made an approach for in January.

The Magpies are also reportedly the front-runners to sign teenage Sunderland star Chris Rigg, seeing him as a hugely exciting long-term candidate who could develop into a special player over time.

This would be some coup…

Howe could also look to improve his attack moving forward, not least because Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson struggle to stay fit for long periods, and Lille forward Jonathan David has been backed to seal a move to Newcastle at the end of the season.

Another attacking player who could move to St James' is Albert Gudmundsson, who is currently plying his trade at Genoa, scoring nine goals in Serie A this season.

Newcastle want James Garner

According to a new update from TEAMtalk, Newcastle are keen on signing Everton midfielder James Garner, being joined by a number of other Premier League clubs in showing an interest.

James Garner.

"Garner has emerged on the radar of Spurs and several other Premier League clubs, including Newcastle, after catching the eye at Goodison Park over the last 18 months."

Garner may not necessarily be the elite midfielder that some Newcastle fans crave this summer, but he could still be a shrewd addition, boosting Howe's squad depth and acting as a long-term addition who should only improve.

The fact that the Englishman spent so many years at Manchester United as a youth team player says a lot about his potential – he also made seven appearances for the Red Devils' first team – and Roy Keane has lauded him in the past during a spell at Nottingham Forest, saying:

"He’s very good technically and he likes to dictate the play, sit a little bit more than Yates. Tough game for him today, but this game is good for those young players to experience playing top teams like Liverpool. It’s a great way to learn."

Garner would add to the homegrown quota at Newcastle, which would be an added bonus, and Howe could feel that he could develop an exciting young player into an even more formidable figure as the years pass, ensuring he reaches his potential.

Sarah Taylor withdraws from England's T20 Ashes squad

Fran Wilson comes into the squad with series already out of reach

Sarah Taylor has decided to withdraw from the T20 leg of England Women’s Ashes campaign, as part of the ongoing management of her longstanding anxiety issues. With the series already out of England’s reach following their 3-0 defeat in the ODI series and last week’s drawn Test in Taunton, it has been decided that Taylor would benefit from the break, with Fran Wilson coming into the squad to replace her.Taylor and the ECB staff have been working together over the last three years to manage her mental health, ever since she took an extended break from the game in 2016, before returning to play a key part in England’s World Cup victory the following year. She also missed the last World T20 in the Caribbean in November, where England were beaten by Australia in the final.”I first took a break from the game in 2016 but I don’t want people to feel this is exactly the same,” Taylor said. “I’ve made progress in that time and there are plenty of challenges I’ve met on the way and hurdles I’ve overcome.”That said, mental health is not something you ‘beat’. It’s a continual management process and at the moment I don’t feel in a good enough place to compete in international sport.”The T20 leg of the Ashes begins in Chelmsford this evening, where England’s aim is the same as it was on their last Ashes tour of Australia – to tie the points series at 8-8, even though Australia retain the title as holders.”I wish the girls all the best across the IT20 series. 8-8 is a very different score from 8-2 and I know they’re all working incredibly hard to win these last three matches and draw the series.”

Van Bronckhorst’s £4m Rangers’ liability is now worth less than Dowell

Glasgow Rangers have recorded 11 victories in a row and are at the summit of the Premiership table as March begins.

Add in a League Cup triumph along with a clash against Benfica in the last 16 of the Europa League to come next week, and It's safe to say Philippe Clement has transformed the Gers from the doldrums under Michael Beale to potentially winning a treble.

The Belgian has done this while inheriting a squad which had been built by the Englishman during the summer, while several big-money signings had failed to prove their worth during the opening couple of months of the new campaign.

It all seems to be coming together nicely just as the season is reaching its climax and another trophy or two will endear Clement even further to the Ibrox faithful.

The summer transfer window will be the chance for him to enhance the quality of his squad along with getting rid of some deadwood and one player in particular may find himself surplus to requirements.

How much Ben Davies cost Rangers

Former manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst faced a similar situation during the summer of 2022 after taking over the previous November.

Not only had he won the Scottish Cup – the first time the Gers had claimed the trophy since 2009 – but the Dutchman led Rangers to the Europa League final, although it ended in heartbreak.

The Ibrox side failed to retain their Premiership crown, however, and the main priority for the 2022/23 campaign was to win it back.

This saw the former Feyenoord boss splash money on the likes of Antonio Colak, Ridvan Yilmaz and Rabbi Matondo, while Ben Davies was also a big-money signing.

Market Movers

Football FanCast's Market Movers series explores the changing landscape of the modern transfer market. How much is your club's star player or biggest flop worth today?

Indeed, the Gers paid Liverpool handsomely in order to secure his signature as a fee of £4m was agreed.

The Englishman failed to make an appearance for the Anfield side during his 18 months on Merseyside, but he did have plenty of Championship experience during spells with Preston North End and Sheffield United, indicating that his arrival could bolster the defence.

Ben Davies

Nearly two years since his signing, Davies has failed to live up to that £4m transfer fee and his performances have seen his market value decrease rather rapidly during this time period.

Ben Davies’ market value at Rangers

According to Football Transfers, the centre-back is now currently valued at €1.7m (£1.4m) and the way things are going, this won't be increasing any time soon.

His valuation actually reached €5.2m (£4.4m) during the embryonic stages of his spell in Glasgow, yet this value plummeted fairly swiftly due to a series of poor displays.

Ben Davies

The defender has played only 12 times this season under both Beale and Clement, while he is even valued less than Kieran Dowell, who has struggled to make a meaningful impact since moving to Rangers last summer.

Kieran Dowell’s market value at Rangers

The midfielder was signed on a pre-contact agreement prior to the end of the 2022/23 season and was paraded to the supporters during their final home match of the campaign against Hearts.

Dowell had played over 100 Championship matches during his career down south, scoring 26 goals and registering 12 assists, suggesting he could add something extra to the Gers attack.

Due to injury problems, however, the 26-year-old has failed to really demonstrate his true abilities on a consistent basis for the club.

The former Everton starlet has made just 12 appearances for the Ibrox side thus far, scoring three goals. He has shown flashes of brilliance, especially in a clash against Motherwell on Christmas Eve, netting a fine opening goal for the club.

Although he cost the Light Blues nothing, his market value currently sits at a respectable €2m (£1.7m) and if he can return to action sooner rather than later and contribute during the title run in, this could even increase slightly.

It shows that even someone who has not played often still has a higher value than that of Davies and these could perhaps be his final few months in Scotland.

Why Ben Davies’ market value has dropped

Despite splashing cash on the centre-back, Davies only started once for the club between his arrival and the start of October during his maiden season due to injury, and it meant Van Bronckhorst had to play youngster Leon King alongside Connor Goldson.

His performances in the Champions League were particularly dismal, as the Gers struggled against the elite. Davies not only ranked in a lowly 14th spot among his teammates for tackles per game (one), but he also ranked sixth for possession lost per game (10.3) along with averaging a Sofascore rating of just 6.23 for the games that he featured in.

It was not just Europe that he struggled in, however, as he failed to really hit the ground running once he recovered from his injury issues, despite featuring 38 times for the Gers that season.

Indeed, following a mistake against Celtic last April in what was effectively a title decider, former Ibrox frontman Kenny Miller dubbed Davies “poor” and it proved he had a long way to go in order to succeed north of the border.

The 6 foot 1 liability started every single Europa League fixture as the Gers topped their group, but he has played only six times outside that competition, and given the recent form of John Souttar, the defender has dropped down the pecking order.

The 28-year-old still has just over two years remaining on his current contract, yet this could suggest Clement may be able to sell him for a decent fee during the summer transfer window.

Rangers: Beale must now move Ben Davies on

The defender could be set to depart Ibrox this summer.

ByRoss Kilvington Aug 4, 2023

Whether they can recoup the majority of the £4m that was spent on him two years ago remains to be seen, but anything northwards of £2m would represent a decent piece of business by Clement, and it could give him some funds to strengthen his side.

Although Davies looked like he could turn out to be a solid investment, the truth is, his performances have failed to impress the Ibrox faithful and this could see him depart in the coming months.

'Thought the wicket would deteriorate more than it did' – Kane Williamson

Having said that, though, the New Zealand captain gave credit to Dimuth Karunaratne for a ‘fantastic hundred’ in the fourth innings

Andrew Fidel Fernando in Galle18-Aug-2019

We weren’t quite good enough for long enough, Kane Williamson said after the Galle loss•Getty Images

Yes, the previous best chase at this venue was only worth 99, and sure, 268 seemed like an excellent total to defend, but this particular surface got slower, not harder to bat on. So, at least, said Kane Williamson after New Zealand’s six-wicket defeat. His analysis was not without strong evidence. New Zealand’s own tailenders had appeared comfortable on the surface during long stints in the middle on days three and four. And although there was significant turn, the majority of spin deliveries that Sri Lanka’s top order faced in the fourth innings did not spit, as they often do on days four and five on Sri Lankan tracks. The target was ultimately achieved with relative ease, thanks largely to Dimuth Karunaratne’s 122 and Lahiru Thirimanne’s 64, the pair putting on 161 for the first wicket.”We thought the wicket would deteriorate more than it did,” Williamson said. “It perhaps got slower. It wasn’t turning a huge amount out of the rough. It didn’t get more difficult to bat on. I think there was a little bit more bounce and the turn was a little bit quicker in the first innings. Though, saying that, it was a good batting surface as well. I thought our bowlers operated patiently for a long period of time. We probably even bowled better in the second innings, but without the edges going to hand, and those sorts of things, which is the nature of the game we play.”Still, I think in a last-innings chase, a lot of credit goes to the way Sri Lanka batted. It was a fantastic hundred by Dimuth.”New Zealand’s two specialist spinners only claimed a wicket apiece in the second innings, having combined for eight wickets in the first innings. Mitchell Santner – the left-arm spinning allrounder – went wicketless through the Test.”I though the bowling was outstanding on day four,” Williamson said. “Perhaps we didn’t have a lot go our way, and maybe we let the odd chance slip. We knew that on that sort of surface, if you are able to get a breakthrough things can happen quickly, as we saw later on today when perhaps the game was already lost. It was a shame not to get early breakthroughs.”Williamson himself did not manage a score of significance, falling for 0 in the first innings and 4 in the second, despite coming into the series with some form, as he almost always does. Both his dismissals in Galle were the result of attacking shots – the second-innings dismissal especially, where he came down the track at Lasith Embuldeniya and holed out.”Personally I was probably looking to be too positive when it wasn’t really required. In hindsight, if you go back in time, that wouldn’t have been the option, because the wicket was pretty much just getting slower rather than deteriorating.”New Zealand, though, will be hopeful that something can still be salvaged from this series. On their last tour of the island, in 2012, they had also lost the first Test in Galle, but levelled the series at the P Sara Oval in Colombo, with both Williamson and Ross Taylor hitting centuries there. The P Sara is the venue for the second Test this time around as well.”That last series here was a long time ago, but it was a brilliant performance from us to equal that series against a very strong Sri Lankan side. We’re up against a strong Sri Lankan side again who know these conditions very well. They’re very clinical at playing the sort of cricket that’s required here. We can take some lessons from the way they played as well. It was fairly evenly poised for a long part of the match. But they were exceptional in their last innings.”For us, I think there were good bits in the game, but perhaps we weren’t good enough for long enough.”

Southampton star who made just 12 touches was as bad as Rothwell v Hull

Southampton had a horror show first half against Hull City that resulted in a disappointing defeat come full-time, finding themselves 2-0 down going into the break on a night where Russell Martin's men failed to show up.

The final scoreline would read 2-1, with second-half substitute Joe Aribo bagging what was just a consolation strike in the end, but it was a second defeat in three all the same for a Saints side that once looked unbeatable in the Championship.

Southampton's confidence was visibly knocked in the first half as Liam Rosenior's Tigers showed no mercy, with the likes of Joe Rothwell for the hosts having a torrid night at St. Mary's on the contrary.

The AFC Bournemouth loanee instantly endeared himself to his new set of South Coast supporters with a brace against Huddersfield Town earlier in the month, but he could well now find his spot in the first-team up for grabs after such a dismal showing last night.

Joe Rothwell's game vs Hull City in numbers

Martin would haul Rothwell off the St. Mary's pitch at the interval, with two other notable underperformers in the Saints ranks in Sekou Mara and Adam Armstrong also taken off with the Southampton boss understandably fuming at the first-half performance.

Rothwell's dire night would start on the wrong foot, setting the tone for the rest of his performance by missing a glorious one-on-one opportunity in the infancy of the contest after Hull had dilly-dallyed with the ball out from the back.

If Rothwell had confidently stroked the ball into the back of Ryan Allsop's net, there could well have been a very different outcome at the full-time whistle.

The Cherries loanee didn't cover himself in much glory away from this missed chance too, surrendering the ball far too easily for Fabio Carvalho to hammer home at 2-0.

Failing to win a single duel in the first half as well, it was a showing from the 29-year-old central midfielder that demanded Martin give him a breather for the second 45 for his own sake.

Armstrong also had a nightmarish 45-minute spell against the Tigers last night, the usually prolific Saints captain struggling to ever really impose himself onto the contest with Hull standing firm whenever he attempted to venture forward.

Adam Armstrong's game vs Hull City in numbers

Excelling playing as an unorthodox right-winger at points this campaign, the former Blackburn Rovers man had a rare off-day from that position against Hull.

Only amassing 12 touches in the game overall, Armstrong was equally as passive when firing efforts at the Tigers net with zero shots managed.

Winning just 25% of his duels also, Armstrong will just want to put the game down to a personal blip with the Saints forward often firing on all cylinders away from this sub-par showing.

Still, despite boasting the title of Southampton's top scorer this season so far with 16 goals, Armstrong's fixed spot in the first team could be on shaky ground after such a poor display against Rosenior's Hull.

His cause won't be helped by the fact David Brooks came on in his place and dazzled in a much improved second half from a Southampton perspective, with the Welshman notching up three key passes.

Martin could, therefore, ring the changes for Southampton's next game at home to relegation-threatened Millwall to get a reaction out of his stuttering troops with Rothwell and Armstrong in real danger of dropping out of the starting XI.
