Man Utd could sign "elite" £50m Hojlund rival who plays like Ibra

Manchester United have a chance to kickstart their season as they face Spurs on Sunday afternoon.

The Red Devils have struggled to gather any consistency since the summer, which has put them ninth in the Premier League.

Therefore, Erik ten Hag must look to the transfer market to improve his squad this January.

Man Utd transfers latest – competition for Hojlund

According to TEAMtalk, Man United remain interested in signing striker Joshua Zirkzee this summer, although face competition, namely from Premier League rivals Arsenal.

The Dutch forward is valued at approximately £50m by Bologna, and it's thought United may well have a good run at the player given Arsenal are planning for a quiet month.

That said, the Red Devils will struggle to fund the move this January unless outgoings occur at the club first.

Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee

How Zirkzee compares to Hojlund

Rasmus Hojlund only moved to United in the summer for £72m, but he has endured a rather frustrating time in England so far.

The Premier League has proved to be difficult to adapt to for the young Danish forward, as highlighted by his one goal in 15 appearances. However, that goal came in his most recent league game, which will temporarily lift the pressure off his shoulders.

On the other hand, Hojlund’s potential rival, Zirkzee, has been on fire this campaign, and his performances have warranted him being called “elite” by football analyst Ben Mattinson. The 22-year-old has been the driving force behind Bologna’s development, scoring seven goals and providing two assists in 19 matches while operating as a lone centre forward in a 4-2-3-1.

Nonetheless, the table below shows how the two strikers compare based on stats from their respective leagues this season.

Zirkzee stands at 6 foot 4, yet despite his height, he is an extremely athletic and technical player, which has earned him comparisons to Zlatan Ibrahimovic by Ben Mattinson. Just like the former United star, the Bologna attacker loves to be involved in the play, as shown by his touches and passing statistics, while having an elegance about him.

In contrast, Hojlund likes to operate on the fringe of the game, rarely showing for the ball to feet unless in and around the box.

Furthermore, the goals per 90 ratio is obviously a huge difference, with the 20-year-old underperforming his xG and the ex-Bayern star overperforming his, which not only highlights that Zirkzee is rather clinical but that he is also full of confidence.

The Bologna star is also more direct than Hojlund, preferring to impact the game via his dribbling, as shown above, however, he has become known for his ability to find space in the box using flair to stun the opposition. This highlights that the former Atalanta player needs service to be dangerous, whereas the Netherlands ace can create his own luck out of nothing.

Zirkzee would provide a completely different profile to Hojlund, which would give United a different outlook in attack. Together, Ten Hag would have the complete package strike duo, and therefore, the Bologna forward would be an excellent signing.

Josh Tongue five-for puts victory in reach for Worcestershire

Durham coach James Franklin’s call for resilience may not have hit home yet

Durham head coach James Franklin told his players they needed to show more resilience after slipping to defeat in each of their first two Championship matches. They were a while ago, and in the meantime Durham were unlucky not to reach the knock-out stages of the Royal London One-Day Cup. He may conclude after this, though, that the message is not yet hitting home.He defined resilience as the ability to maintain concentration and focus, something they have been able to master for short periods in the 50-over game but appear to find more difficult when the requirement is to stay in that mode for hours rather than minutes. This match has been a case in point. Had they been able to turn the screw after Riki Wessels was out on the second evening, at which point Worcestershire were 236 for 6, with the new ball about to become available, it might have been a different story.Instead, they allowed Ross Whiteley and the lower order to plunder runs so effectively that a 37-run deficit turned into a 117-run lead before the last four wickets were prised out. Worcestershire, 321 for 6 overnight, won the morning session comfortably, the innings closing just before lunch with Durham already looking at a draw as their best possible outcome. But if that were not enough to have a coach shaking his head, they lost the next session comprehensively too, five wickets down before tea and still seven runs in arrears.Charlie Morris, his tail up after his 6 for 53 in the first innings, struck the first blow, trapping Alex Lees in front with a full delivery, his route back to the pavilion soon followed by Cameron Steel, who looked round at his off stump in some puzzlement at how his forward defence had failed to cover it.Cameron Bancroft, given the benefit of the doubt on two when Joe Leach was certain he had him leg before, responded aggressively with four quick boundaries, three of them off Ed Barnard in a uncharacteristically loose spell at first change. It was not long, though, before even the captain was guilty of a lapse, a touch of indecision against Josh Tongue costing him when the ball squirted on to his stumps off an inside edge.Tongue could do with some luck this year. Successful enough the last two summers to be on the England Lions radar, he has been twice named in winter tour squads only to be forced out by injury, the latest a stress fracture in his left foot that denied him a trip to play Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates. That wicket broke a stand worth 49 between Bancroft and Gareth Harte before Harte fell to an excellent piece of work by Ben Cox, standing up to Barnard and executing a leg-side stumping that was so sharp it could have been planned.Tongue then struck twice more, bowling Ned Eckersley just before tea and finding the edge to have Jack Burnham caught behind just afterwards. Tongue took six wickets in Worcestershire’s win at Leicester in their opening match. Ashley Giles, the England director of cricket, was on the ground, and though he was not here on a scouting mission it would have been unusual for him to take no notice of what was happening on the field. At that moment, the possibility of a three-day result loomed until a fightback of sorts occurred, with Liam Trevaskis, a 20-year-old left-arm spinner who made a half-century in his last Championship outing against Sussex at Chester-le-Street, leading the way.He could not quite repeat the feat this time, but it took Worcestershire more than two hours to dislodge him for 47, which was the kind of resistance Franklin would doubtless have liked to see a little higher up the order.Trevaskis was another victim for Tongue, who followed up by yorking Matt Salisbury first ball to finish with 5 for 37. Leach finished things off by having Rushworth caught behind, leaving Worcestershire to chase 81 to win on the last day. There is a bit of rain in the forecast, but not as much as Durham would like. The defeat, when it is confirmed, will be their fifth in the row in Championship cricket.

Dharmesh Sheth backs reports of potential third West Ham signing in January

Sky Sports journalist Dharmesh Sheth has now backed reports of West Ham potentially making another January signing after Kalvin Phillips and Ibrahim Osman.

West Ham confirm Phillips signing and remain in Osman talks

The Hammers moved to officially confirm Phillips' arrival on Friday morning, in what is a big boost for manager David Moyes who welcomes the arrival of a proven Premier League midfielder.

"Beast" striker very keen to join West Ham in boost for David Moyes

The Irons have been linked with a new forward.

ByEmilio Galantini Jan 25, 2024

West Ham have often struggled when Edson Alvarez isn't available for selection, but Phillips' arrival will provide Moyes with an established England international alternative to the 26-year-old.

The Hammers rate him so highly that they're willing to make Phillips their highest-paid player for the duration of his loan spell, and will pay the entirety of his Man City salary over the duration of his London Stadium stay.

Following his arrival, attention now turns to whether they can bring in FC Norsjaelland winger Ibrahim Osman. The 19-year-old, as per widespread reports, is in talks to join West Ham.

West Ham opened negotiations for Osman earlier this week, and interestingly, he is a product of the "Right to Dream" academy like current Irons star Mohammed Kudus. Fabrizio Romano has recently claimed that a West Ham agreement is "close" for Osman, so it will be interesting to see how that develops.

West Ham also exploring Jota deal, says Sheth

While the week has been busy enough at Rush Green, reports have refused to rule out a third January signing, with talkSPORT revealing that West Ham have made contact with Al-Ittihad winger Jota.

The 24-year-old wants to leave Saudi Arabia and has not even been registered in their domestic squad for the rest of the campaign. West Ham are being billed as one of the sides to offer him a way out, with Sky Sports reporter Sheth now backing such claims in an interview with GiveMeSport.

Indeed, he states West Ham are in fact exploring a deal to sign Jota in January.

"I think that full-back is an area that they are looking at. Also, I'm told that they haven't given up on a potential deal for Jota from Al-Ittihad," said the journalist this week.

"They are still exploring a potential deal because he is completely out of favour with the Saudi Pro League club. Since the Saudi Arabian window closed in the summer, he hasn't featured in a Saudi Pro League matchday squad at all."

Bagging 11 goals and 11 assists over his final season at Parkhead, Jota has also been called an "exciting" player by pundit Alan Hutton in an interview with Football Insider.

“Jota's that player fans want to see," Hutton said.

"He's exciting, he takes people on, he makes things happen, he scores goals and ticks all the boxes."

Beale must now unleash Sunderland’s “magic” gem alongside Hjelde

Sunderland will aim to make it back-to-back wins when Michael Beale's men face off against Middlesbrough today in the lunchtime game, an entertaining contest in prospect at the Riverside Stadium between two near neighbours.

The promotion-chasing Black Cats, who find themselves just outside of the playoff picture in the Championship after a wobbly patch of form saw them fall down the division, got their stuttering season back on track last time out with a convincing 3-1 win against Stoke City.

Although Sunderland did end up cruising to a much-needed win, the final moments were made just that little nervier when Jenson Seelt accidentally scored an own goal when Beale's men were three goals in front.

This unfortunate mishap on Seelt's end could see his starting spot sacrificed against Boro, especially with former Leeds United left-back Leo Hjelde joining the Sunderland ranks at the death on Deadline Day.

Jenson Seelt's season in numbers

Signed initially to provide centre-back cover to the likes of Daniel Ballard and Luke O'Nien, Seelt has been thrown into the deep end owing to an injury crisis at left-back recently.

3 dream wingers Sunderland could sign if they need to replace Jack Clarke

Sunderland could well be drafting up a list of potential Jack Clarke replacements in case their star-man leaves.

ByKelan Sarson Jan 22, 2024

Beale has relied upon Seelt to come in and do a job as a makeshift left-back with both Niall Huggins and Dennis Cirkin long-term absentees in the Black Cats treatment room, a less-than-ideal situation.

The 20-year-old Dutchman has performed admirably there, but his blunder against Stoke could well signal the end of his extended spell in the first-team fold as an unconventional full-back.

Losing possession a grand total of 19 times in the win on top of scoring an own goal, it makes logical sense for Beale to gift Hjelde his debut in a Sunderland strip ahead of Seelt today.

Hjelde was never banging down the door at Elland Road for more first-team minutes, hence Leeds not really putting up a fight to keep their young Norwegian defender, but the 20-year-old did shine prior to moving to Elland Road.

leo-hjelde-leeds-united-championship

Following a loan spell at Ross County – amid his stint at Celtic – the promising defender was even tipped to be the "next Van Dijk" by manager John Hughes, with the hope being that Beale can nurture such a talent over the coming months at the Stadium of Light.

The former Rangers boss will also pray that reintroducing Patrick Roberts to the first team today works wonders, the 26-year-old coming in to add an experienced head to a youthful Black Cats team as the push for promotion goes on.

Patrick Roberts' season in numbers

Roberts hasn't set the world alight when selected this season to date however, meaning this could be a controversial call for Beale to make.

The 26-year-old winger only has one assist to show for his efforts when fit from 23 appearances, with his ineffectiveness in the side only further magnified by Jack Clarke's continued heroics down the left-hand side of the pitch.

Yet, the flashes of brilliance Roberts has shown previously in his Sunderland career mean he's still a worthwhile option to start against Boro today.

Roberts excelled last campaign in the Championship, notching up five goals and seven assists as a crucial figure in the Black Cats side who made it into the playoffs.

Described as being "magic" by former Sunderland manager Tony Mowbray at the peak of his powers that same campaign, Beale will pray that Roberts can come good again with just one standout display then re-energising the wing wizard and boosting his confidence in the process.

Sunderland winger Patrick Roberts.

Starting Roberts would see the Black Cats have to majorly rejig for the trip to the Riverside – with Abdoullah Ba arguably undroppable after starring against Stoke – but it could well be a reshuffle that works if the £12.5k-per-week winger is able to show Sunderland what they've been missing on the way to another win after battling back from injury.

BOTAFOGO CRESCEU NO DUELO E FEZ O GOL

JAEL, O CRUEL, ENTRA E EMPATA O PLACAR

Rafael Salgueiro logo assinalou a penalidade máxima.

Dhawan really wants to play – Kohli

The left hander is expected to miss at least India’s next two matches and his ability to field will also be a factor in his recovery

ESPNcricinfo staff14-Jun-2019

Shikhar Dhawan having his left hand in a cast during a training session•Associated Press

Shikhar Dhawan’s fractured left hand will be assessed after 10-12 days and India captain Virat Kohli hopes the batsman’s positive mindset will help his recovery.Dhawan was injured in the match against Australia played on June 9, during which he scored a century, and therefore the earliest he will go through an examination of how much his fractured hand has mended can only be made after approximately June 21.”Dhawan is going to be in a plaster for a couple of weeks. After that we will assess where he stands,” Kohli said. “Hopefully, the injury heals quickly and he will be available for the latter half of our league games and semi-finals for sure.”From that point of view, we want to hold him back, keep him here because he wants to play. I think that kind of mindset will help in healing the injury as well as he really wants to play.”However, it will not be his ability to bat alone that will be under question. India fielding coach R Sridhar said that the assessment will have to include the load that his hand will be put under once it has mended sufficiently to undergo heavier examination.Sridhar said that “throwing won’t be a problem as it is not his dominant hand” – Dhawan is a natural right hander who bats left handed. What will need to be studied carefully is “the impact while fielding and catching, specially is he is a slip fielder”.Following the washout against New Zealand it is possible Dhawan will miss on not one but India’s next two matches, against Pakistan and Afghanistan. Sridhar said that as far as his department goes, Dhawan would be tested out after 10-odd days, “with lighter balls first and gradually move on to the cricket ball and see how it goes from there, but yes that will be a challenge”.Rishabh Pant has been called into the squad as cover but will not officially be added unless Dhawan fails to recover. Once a player is ruled out of the tournament through injury he can’t be brought back unless another player is injured and the ICC technical committee is satisfied with the replacement. In the short-term India will use KL Rahul in the opening position.
