Fresh from League One promotion, Ipswich Town wasted no time in becoming acclimatised in the Championship, instead gunning straight for promotion to the Premier League. To say that the Blues have enjoyed an excellent season so far would be an understatement, with Kieran McKenna's side sitting second in the league and as many as ten points clear of third-placed Leeds United. As we approach the halfway mark, anything other than promotion will now be a disappointment for Ipswich.

With that said, the January transfer window could help truly seal Ipswich's place in next season's Premier League, with the Blues reportedly eyeing a deal to sign one particular top-flight player next month.

Given their surprise position as serious promotion contenders in the Championship, Ipswich are in a good place ahead of the January transfer window where they don't need to make any drastic changes. It's a position that allows them to focus on refining McKenna's squad and maybe even keep one eye on next season when they could find themselves in the Premier League.

Speaking about January plans, chief executive Mark Ashton told the East Anglian Daily Times: "We know the headroom that we’ve got. I’m always backed by the owners. Financially, Kieran is always backed. But Kieran will only bring in the right type of players. He won’t just bring in a player for the numbers that’s just not in his make-up.

"He’s selective and that is something I’m really proud of. Kieran has his technical and physical specifications. We try and get the balance right with players who have got more experience and players who are young, hungry and who he can develop. That won’t change. He’s very clear with me on where he wants to add to the squad in January, but he also talks about the balance of his squad all the time.”

Among those who the impressive manager could look to add in January is a certain Premier League striker. According to the East Anglian Daily Times, Ipswich have made contact with Fulham to sign Jay Stansfield, who is currently on loan at Birmingham City in the Championship. The 21-year-old reportedly ticks all of McKenna's boxes, but it will take an adequate fee for Fulham to part ways with their young forward.

Still only 21-years-old, Stansfield's stats for Birmingham have been impressive throughout the current campaign. The Fulham loanee has scored five goals in 19 games this season with an xG (expected goals) of just 3.2. In McKenna's Ipswich side, those numbers would only go up, given the amount of chances they create and the goals they score – when it comes to Championship goals this season, no side has scored more than Ipswich.

The Blues would also be getting a player who's been at the centre of plenty of praise, with former Birmingham boss John Eustace saying via the Birmingham Mail: "Jay is an excellent player. I think it’s a statement of intent that he chose us. He had 12 or 13 Championship clubs wanting him and it’s very pleasing that he wanted to come to Birmingham City."

Glenn Maxwell has stressed his desire to bat higher up the order for Australia’s ODI team in the run to this year’s World Cup in England, pointing out that coming in with 15 overs to go in a T20 innings is a world removed from the same scenario in a 50-over match.Entering the fray in the fifth over of Australia’s T20I chase against India in Bengaluru on Wednesday night, Maxwell carved out a sublime unbeaten century to ease the visitors to their target with useful assistance from D’Arcy Short and Peter Handscomb. Both these players appear destined to occupy spots higher up ODI order than Maxwell, who in recent times has been shunted down to No. 7, with the expectation that he can then attack without fear or favour.But in assessing his chances of moving higher up the order in the team coached by Justin Langer, Maxwell argued that it was unrealistic to expect similar things from him facing a far older ball on a drying, slowing pitch in the ODI series to follow, relative to the surface he was able to take advantage of to win Australia their first bilateral T20 series against India.”Even when I came in tonight, there were 15 overs to go, I think,” Maxwell said. “That’s still 15 overs to bat and I was able to get 100, so even if I’m doing that at No. 7 or No. 6 it doesn’t really matter. I could tame it down a little bit, I don’t have to go as hard,” he said. “I feel like I’ve just been picking off balls that I can hit for boundaries. I just felt today I had a really good read of the game and was able to stay one step ahead.”

The January transfer window opened for business at the start of the month and Liverpool are yet to make a first-team addition to their squad as of yet.

It remains to be seen whether or not Jurgen Klopp will be able to bolster his side before February but he does have around two weeks left to get any potential business over the line.

The Reds could use the window to lay the groundwork for deals in the summer transfer window, when it may not be as difficult to strike agreements with clubs.

Teams are, naturally, more reluctant to part ways with their best players midway through a season as it could impact how their campaign pans out over the next five months.

Liverpool's search for a new winger

Therefore, Liverpool could need to wait until the summer to get their top targets, which appears to be the case with Crystal Palace whiz Michael Olise.

FootballTransfers reported earlier this month that the Reds are interested in a deal to sign the former Reading starlet to bolster Klopp's wide options.

The outlet claimed that they are considering an approach to land the French talent, who is also attracting interest from fellow Premier League side Manchester United.

However, the report did state that the forward is expected to remain at Selhurst Park beyond the end of the current transfer window, but that a move in the summer is 'on the horizon'.

FootballTransfers added that he has a release clause in his current contract with Palace that allows a team to sign him for a fee of £60m, and the Eagles are not willing to negotiate a lower fee with any team.

Olise is not the only player on the club's radar to add to their options out wide, though, as the report named Leeds forward Crysencio Summerville as a winger they have an eye on.

The Dutch magician has produced 12 goals, seven assists, and 13 'big chances' created in 24 Championship appearances for Daniel Farke's side so far this season.

Liverpool must, however, prioritise a swoop for Olise as he is a Premier League-proven winger with the quality to be a fantastic signing for the Reds, in the short and long-term.

The 22-year-old could come in as Klopp's own version of Manchester City and England star Phil Foden, who has been in superb form this season.

Both players are left-footed playmakers who can operate on either flank or through the middle as an attacking midfielder for their respective sides.

They are also both 23 or younger and have plenty of time on their hands to develop and improve over the years to come, which makes them both highly valuable assets due to their current ability and potential.

Foden is on fire this season

The England international has racked up 11 goals and eight assists in 31 appearances in all competitions for Pep Guardiola's side so far this term.

He has been in sublime form in the Premier League for the Cityzens with five goals and six assists in 18 top-flight starts, including one goal and two assists in his last three games.

The 23-year-old magician has produced 2.1 key passes per game and ranks highly among his positional peers in a host of creative and progressive statistics.

Foden ranks within the top 11% of Premier League attacking midfielders and wingers for assists (0.34) per 90 and the top 20% for shot-creating actions (4.54) per 90. He also ranks within the top 24% for progressive passes (4.71) and the top 31% for Expected Assisted Goals (0.24) per 90.

These statistics show that he has been excellent at coming in on his left foot from the right flank, or driving through the middle to make things happen, to create chances and progress the play for City.

Why Olise would be Klopp's own Foden

Meanwhile, Olise has produced five goals and one assist in nine Premier League appearances for Palace so far this season. However, one assist does not accurately reflect his creative output.

The 22-year-old wizard has created four 'big chances' and produced 2.2 key passes per game across those nine appearances and only been rewarded with one assist, which suggests that his teammates have let him down with their wasteful finishing in the final third.

As you can see in the table above, the Palace star ranks highly in a number of key creative metrics for his side this season, which shows that his one assist is not a fair reflection of his creativity.

Last term, Olise racked up 11 assists from 11 'big chances' created in 37 Premier League appearances for the Eagles. This proves that his current form is not a flash in the pan, as he has been a superb creator for his team over the past 18 months.

These statistics suggest that Klopp would be bringing in a player with the quality to create high-quality opportunities for the likes of Darwin Nunez, Mohamed Salah, and Diogo Jota, among others, frequently.

Olise, who was hailed as "wonderful" and a "technician" by U23 scout Antonio Mango, has a terrific left foot and would not need a period of adaptation as he has already proven himself in the Premier League as a scorer and a creator since his move to Selhurst Park from Reading.

This suggests that he could hit the ground running at Anfield, whether a move is possible this month or if they have to wait until the summer to make their move, as Klopp's own version of Foden in the final third.

Australian overseas debutant Jake Lehmann’s unbeaten 77 off 67 balls was the feature of Lancashire’s 239 for 6 before the Falcons were tied down against spin and finished on 209 for 7.It means Lancashire sit second with 10 points from seven games ahead of their final outing at Warwickshire on Saturday.The Red Rose last achieved this winning streak in 2013 when they won six 40-over games in a row. They last reached the knockout rounds of a List A competition in 2012.Derbyshire, who have seven points from seven outings, may be out of contention by the time they wrap up the group stage against Worcestershire on Monday.Steven Croft was the pick of the home bowlers with 2 for 20 from seven overs of offspin, while Rob Jones and Matthew Parkinson also struck.Lancashire’s innings was underpinned by fourth-wicket pair Keaton Jennings, who made 84 off 88 balls, and Lehmann, both of whom were measured as they shared 86 in 14 overs after Derbyshire won the toss.
