Virat Kohli, Tim Paine collide, exchange words before umpire interrupts

The two captains extended their altercation from the third evening when Paine had called Kohli a “big head”

ESPNcricinfo staff17-Dec-20182:10

Kartik: Banter fine as long as Code of Conduct not pushed

The fourth day witnessed heated conversations between the two captains, Tim Paine and Virat Kohli, in Perth as Australia were strengthening their grip on the match. During the wicketless first session, the captains even came into physical contact when Paine ran down the pitch for a single in the 71st over of the innings. As Paine nudged the first ball of the over towards midwicket for a run, Kohli ran towards the pitch in anticipation of collecting the ball and collided with Paine before the batsman could reach the non-striker’s end. Even as Kohli collected the ball and made his way towards mid-on for the next delivery, Paine followed him for a couple of steps for a few words before umpire Chris Gaffaney interrupted to remind them they were the captains.Kohli to Paine: “I’m not saying a word to you, why are you getting riled up?”
Paine to Kohli: “I’m fine. You’re the one that lost it yesterday, why are you trying to be cool today?”
Chris Gaffaney: “Oi, that’s enough, that’s enough.”
Paine: “We’re allowed to talk.”
Gaffaney: “Nah, nah, come on, play the game. You guys are the captains.”
Paine: “We can have a conversation… there’s no swearing, no…”
Gaffaney: “Tim you’re the captain.”
Paine: “Keep your cool, Virat!”Things heated up between Virat Kohli and Tim Paine in the first session•Getty Images

When Paine was walking off after being dismissed for 37 eight overs later, Kohli said a few more words that made the Australia captain turn around for a reply.Kohli and Paine had earlier been recorded exchanging words after a caught-behind appeal against Australia’s captain was turned down on the third evening. Walking past Paine, Kohli had remarked to his team-mates “If he messes it up, it’s 2-0”, moving Paine to retort “You’ve got to bat first, big head”.

Chelsea could forget about Osimhen with "unplayable" £86m goal machine

With just under half of the Premier League season complete, it would be fair to describe Chelsea's campaign thus far as shambolic, as just like last year, the club that so prided themselves on ruthless efficiency and finding a way to win now find themselves in the bottom half of the table and closer to the relegation zone than top four.

Mauricio Pochettino was supposed to come in and steer the club in the right direction, but instead, the west Londoners look more adrift than ever.

However, the one positive is that the team are currently producing the fourth-highest expected goals number in the entire league, meaning that adding a clinical striker to the mix could see the side fly up the table.

Poch can supercharge Palmer and Chelsea with £100m "monster" signing

The experienced striker could fire Chelsea back into Europe.

ByJack Salveson Holmes Dec 13, 2023

Napoli star Victor Osimhen has recently been touted for a move to Stamford Bridge. However, the latest player linked could be a wiser option given the £120m the Italians want for their forward, in the form of Sporting CP's Viktor Gyökeres.

Chelsea transfer news – Viktor Gyökeres

According to Simon Phillips (via The Chelsea Chronicle), Chelsea are determined to sign a new striker in the January transfer window, but with the price for Osimhen potentially reaching up to £120m, Swedish striker Gyökeres has moved up their wishlist.

The Sporting star joined the club from Championship side Coventry City in July for a fee in the region of £20m.

viktor-gyokeres-transfer-gossip-leeds-united-farke-aston-villa-cameron-archer

His recent arrival means that any move in the winter will come at a premium, with Portuguese outlet Record reporting (via Sport Witness) that it would take an offer of about €100m – £86m – to secure the marksman's signature.

While that is still a lot of money, it represents a discount of £34m on Osimhen's price and, considering that the former Coventry player has racked up 16 goal involvements in 16 games for the Portuguese giants, it would probably be worth it.

How Viktor Gyökeres compares to Victor Osimhen

Now, either of these players would be a dramatic improvement on the attacking options Chelsea currently have at their disposal, and while the Nigerian "goal machine", as described by journalist Mimi Fawaz, has a better track record in Europe's top five leagues, Gyökeres looks like he could be just as good.

He was lethal in the Championship last season, scoring 21 goals and providing 12 assists in just 47 starts and despite changing leagues in the summer, he has continued right where he left off this season.

Sporting CP strikerViktor Gyokeres.

Dubbed as "unplayable" by his former teammate Maxime Biamou, the one-time Brighton & Hove Albion man stacks up well against the Nigerian when their respective underlying numbers are compared.

The Serie A winner just comes out on top in arguably the most crucial statistic, non-penalty expected goals and assists, but in essentially every other metric, the Swede has the advantage, and by quite some way in some instances.

Progressive passes, carries, passing accuracy, shot-creating actions, and successful take-ons are all areas in which Gyökeres is well clear of the former Lille man, potentially hinting towards a more complete player who could be as helpful in creating chances as he is in finishing them.

Ultimately, there isn't an enormous difference between the two superstars, but the more impressive creative stats and the cheaper price tag make Gyökeres the more appealing target.

Faf du Plessis' century leaves Pakistan with mountain to climb

Faf du Plessis bounced back from his pair at Centurion with a captain’s innings of 103 as South Africa stretched their lead above 200

The Report by Andrew Miller04-Jan-2019

Faf du Plessis leans into a drive•Associated Press

Faf du Plessis bounced back from his pair at Centurion with a captain’s innings of 103, his ninth Test century and first at his adopted home ground of Newlands, as South Africa ground out an imposing first-innings lead of 205 and counting to leave Pakistan needing an urgent revival of their batting fortunes to stave off a heavy defeat in the second Test.Though du Plessis’ vigil ended in the final half an hour before stumps, as Sarfraz Ahmed correctly gambled his team’s final review on a thin nick off Shaheen Afridi that had gone unnoticed by the umpire, Quinton de Kock remained unbowed to the close on 55, having settled into his knock following a manic flurry of boundaries and chances in his first dozen deliveries. A side that has yet to pass 200 in any of its three innings in the series to date already has its work cut out in this match – an hour of de Kock mayhem in the morning may push their hopes clean over the brink. The second day involved more grind than glamour but, for du Plessis, it was a sweet day’s work, and one that was greeted with glee in the home dressing room – not least by his veteran colleague Dale Steyn, who recognised that his captain’s five-and-a-half hours of application across 226 balls had allowed South Africa’s four-pronged pace attack to freshen up with a valuable day of rest. The same could not be said for Pakistan’s beleaguered pacemen, who toiled with spirit for much of the day but, on a deck on which their legspinner Yasir Shah found little assistance or role, had run out of steam by the close.Pakistan’s spirits also took a battering in the second hour of the morning session when, in a sliding doors moment that had uncanny parallels with Dean Elgar’s reprieve in the run-chase at Centurion, they were denied the wicket of Temba Bavuma, on 3 at the time, after a low catch to Azhar Ali at slip was contentiously overturned by the third umpire, S Ravi.In mitigation, it was an excruciatingly close call, with Azhar’s fingers seemingly wrapped around the ball, but with the turf appearing to assist the completion of the catch. However, given that the on-field umpire, Bruce Oxenford, had given a soft signal of ‘out’, Pakistan had plenty reason to feel sore that the benefit of the doubt had again not gone their way.Bavuma, who had only arrived at the crease in the previous over following Afridi’s extraction of Theunis de Bruyn, grew in stature after his let-off. He set himself for the long haul in an innings of 75 from 162 balls, showing a good awareness of his off stump but also a keen eye for the loose delivery with 10 often blisteringly harvested fours. In harness with his captain, Bavuma batted clean through the afternoon session in adding 156 for the fifth wicket – the same figure at which South Africa’s fifth wicket would have fallen had Azhar’s catch been upheld.Though Mohammad Abbas in particular was his usual wobbly self, bowling Hashim Amla with a snorter in his first over of the day and threatening the edge regularly thereafter, neither of the left-armers, Mohammad Amir or Afridi, could find much to trouble Bavuma or du Plessis as they persistently angled the ball across their bows in search of reverse swing, but found little deviation through the air.The pick of Bavuma’s strokes were a brace of slashed cuts through point early in his stay before he greeted Yasir with a gleeful lofted drive over long-on in the afternoon, and he seemed inked in for his second Test century – and second on this ground – not least when, on 65, he gained his second reprieve of the day, an lbw decision that was overturned on review after being shown to be missing the bails by millimetres. But then, ten runs later, Afridi produced the killer delivery in the midst of an erratic over. Moments after straying into Bavuma’s pads to gift him another boundary, Afridi got one to straighten and lift on off stump, and kiss the edge through to Sarfraz.Du Plessis, however, was not to be denied as he marched inexorably towards his hundred, most notably with a series of rasping cover drives, which were unfurled in all their glory whenever Pakistan’s quicks strayed in length. However, amid his moments of fluency, he too had his struggles, not least when he was struck a pair of stinging blows on the bottom hand as Pakistan’s left-armers found extra nip from round the wicket. The first, from Amir on 34, required running repairs after seemingly squashing a nail on du Plessis’ bottom hand. And the second, from Afridi on 81, had him flinging his bat to the ground in agony after finding the exact same spot. But he gritted his teeth and got on with the job, and when on 96, Sarfraz behind the stumps spilled the simplest of leg-side deflections off the toiling Abbas, he knew it had to be his day.Sure enough, five balls later, out came that cover drive for the three milestone-sealing runs off Amir, and off came the helmet – not for long, mind you, as Amir sconed him in the same over with an excellently directed bouncer to remind South Africa of the enduring threat in their ranks, even if on this occasion, they are in the process of being overwhelmed.

On verge of Test debut, Marcus Stoinis wants to add 'own spin' to natural game

He hasn’t played red-ball cricket in a while, but the allrounder feels he is ready for a Test debut, if it comes his way in Canberra

Alex Malcolm29-Jan-2019

No player epitomises Cricket Australia’s schedule jumble better than Marcus Stoinis. The 29-year-old allrounder has played 29 matches this summer, including two first-grade fixtures, for four different teams with seven different format changes. He has not played a red-ball fixture since December 10, with his last 11 matches being either domestic T20s or ODIs.Yet, he is on verge of making his Test debut at Manuka Oval on Friday against Sri Lanka, just five days after playing his third Big Bash League match in just over a week.”We’re used it to now,” Stoinis said. “You play so many formats in different teams all round the world, it’s something you have to adapt to. Everyone has to deal with the same thing.”Australia’s schedule is being hotly debated both publicly and privately. While Stoinis is more challenged than most by the haphazard nature of it, he is also a beneficiary.Stoinis has been called up to potentially provide a fifth bowling option on what is anticipated to be a very flat surface in Canberra, leapfrogging Mitchell Marsh as the preferred seam-bowling allrounder for the Test side. The workloads of Australia’s fast bowlers are being carefully monitored despite the Brisbane Test not lasting three days. Having already lost Josh Hazlewood to a back injury, Australia do not wish to lose another. Mitchell Starc has bowled 321.1 overs in 13 matches this summer and Pat Cummins 238.4 in 10. While Jhye Richardson has played nearly every match he’s been available for, sending down 314.3 overs in 19 games across three formats.Stoinis, one of the most meticulous preparers in the Australia set-up, chose not to complain about the schedule, saying that the cricketers simply had to deal with it.”To even think about changing it is way beyond my pay grade,” Stoinis said.”There’s so much cricket, there’s so much reporting to do for you guys, the commentators are travelling around, the cricketers are travelling around. It’s probably hard to ever get that perfect. It’s probably just a matter of, the fact that you get experienced enough to start dealing with those sorts of things. It’s a non-negotiable. You just have to keep going and it’s something out of your control.”The biggest challenge for Stoinis if he debuts won’t be the bowling loads. As was the case for Marsh, runs are the only currency in the Test allrounder role.Increasing workload for fast bowlers is a major point of concern•Getty Images

Stoinis’ first-class batting record does not match-up well against other top-six contenders. He averages 33.61 over 91 innings. He has scored only four first-class centuries and none since July 2016 – for Australia A against South Africa A in Brisbane. Since then he has averaged just 22.32 in his last 34 first-class innings. He went a stretch of 28 first-class innings without a half-century, despite some exceptional white-ball form in the same period, but found some good touch in his seven Sheffield Shield innings this season, producing scores of 80, 81 and 85 for Western Australia before the BBL break.”I’ll take some confidence out of that,” Stoinis said. “(It’s been) a couple of lean years in red-ball cricket so it was really good to have a good year this year and everything is going well so far and then again you just try and implement those plans as often as you can.”Part of the issue for Stoinis is that his role is always changing. He began his senior career in grade cricket in WA as an opener, playing alongside current Australia coach Justin Langer at Scarborough, and was initially picked for Shield cricket with WA at the top of the order. He moved to Victoria and batted almost exclusively at No. 3 in Shield cricket where he scored three centuries and averaged 38.22 over four seasons.Since moving back to WA for family reasons, he has had to adapt to batting at No. 5 and No. 6 after strong performances in those unfamiliar spots at the ODI level for Australia.”It’s quite a different role,” Stoinis said. “But I think it’s also just something to show selectors, or whatever the team needs as well, is to adapt to situations. It’s something I’ve had to learn with one-day cricket and Twenty20 cricket as well. Everything as you become more experienced becomes a little bit easier to transition to.”He has shown his versatility in his last eight innings in BBL and ODI cricket. He has opened for Melbourne Stars in five games, scoring three half-centuries, and has been man of the match on four occasions. While in the ODI series against India, he batted at No. 6, batting in a variety of different scenarios. If he plays in Canberra, he will likely bat at No. 6. But he said he can take a lot of confidence from his most recent form despite the change of format.”I think so. I think any form of cricket, if you’re playing well, you feel good – whether it’s club cricket, whether it’s state cricket, or international cricket,” Stoinis said. “We play all year round. So when you feel good you make the most of it. I haven’t played Test cricket yet so we’ll see but I feel like I’m in a good spot.”(I’ll) probably look to play my natural game. And I’ve played long enough now to probably identify what that is. But also, definitely understanding that Test cricket is the art of discipline. Just sticking to your plan, being disciplined to the art of batting and art of bowling, all that sort of stuff. So that’s definitely my focus, but my own spin on it.”Complicating matters further, this could be Stoinis’ last red-ball match before a potential Ashes tour berth, as ODI tours of India the UAE will take him out of Shield cricket before the Indian Premier League and the World Cup.
