Liverpool enjoyed an impressive summer transfer window which has restored the equilibrium at the centre of the midfield, having been stuck in the mire last season.
The Reds failed to qualify for the Champions League and struggled to produce performances of the usual calibre under Jurgen Klopp's management, but all is good again now and the Anfield side look likely to fight for the Premier League title this season.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.
However, the work is not quite done and Klopp appears to be ready to further the rebuild by returning for a touted summer target, who is likely available in January.
What's the latest on Andre to Liverpool?
Liverpool were fierce pursuers of Brazilian prospect Andre's signature this year, and while efforts were indeed made, Fluminense were reluctant to part with their prized asset midway through the Brasileiro Serie A campaign (which runs from May to December).
With the selling club also facing Argentinian side Boca Juniors in the Copa Libertadores final (the South American equivalent of the Champions League), the chance of signing him was always going to be remote.
However, according to Fabrizio Romano, the 22-year-old is still firmly on the Merseyside outfit's radar, and could be targetted in January upon the conclusion of Fluminense's campaign – with the midfielder holding a €40m (£34m) release clause in his contract.
Jamal Musiala
Amid apparent interest from the Reds in Bayern Munich's Jamal Musiala also, the journalist said: “As well as Musiala, we’re also seeing Liverpool transfer rumours involving some other big names, and I wanted to address those stories here.
"I think he (Andre) could have a chance to move in 2024, but we will see what happens in terms of negotiation with Fluminense – it won’t be easy as they are always strong in negotiations."
How good is Andre?
Having risen through Fluminense's youth ranks, Andre is now starring as the kernel of his side's exploits, having started 20 league matches this term, remarkably completing 95% of his passes, making 8.0 ball recoveries and 2.1 tackles per game, succeeding with 70% of his dribbles and winning 62% of his ground duels.
Hailed as a "leader" by talent scout Jacek Kulig, he has made 156 appearances for his homeland club, scoring four times and assisting three goals, and has earned two caps for Brazil.
A supreme distributor of the ball and a tenacious and energetic presence, Andre ranks among the top 1% of midfielders across similar divisions over the past year for pass completion, the top 1% for passes attempted, the top 12% for successful take-ons and the top 22% for progressive carries per 90, as per FBref.
Such attributes are not too dissimilar to those of Thiago Alcantara, Liverpool's Spanish maestro, who has been hailed for his "staggering" technical skills and ball-playing ability by pundit Michael Owen.
Having signed from Bayern Munich for £25m in 2020, the 32-year-old has missed at least ten matches due to injury every year, having missed all 11 games this term as he continues his rehabilitation from a hip injury.
Fluminense midfielder Andre.
Out of contract next summer, the £200k-per-week gem is almost certainly within his final season on English shores, and while there will be hope that he can return soon to bolster Klopp's side, it does feel like the interest in Andre lingers within the same breath as Thiago's situation.
Thiago, for all his fitness struggles, is a superlative midfielder and ranks among the top 4% of positional peers across Europe's top five leagues for passes attempted, the top 6% for progressive passes, the top 10% for successful take-ons, the top 7% for tackles and the top 9% for interceptions per 90.
Andre is a "controller" – as stated by Melissa Reddy – who appears to boast the tool kit to succeed this Reds sensation, and he may well be the man to join the fold in 2024, taking the baton and aiding Liverpool in their pursuit of undying success.
Glamorgan slumped to 52 for 5 after a delayed start against Derbyshire’s strong seam attack

Glamorgan 175 for 7 (Cooke 69, Palladino 4-49) v Derbyshire ScorecardThere is a long standing theory that when the incoming tide approaches the St. Helen’s ground in Swansea the ball will swing. Although both teams wanted to bat first, the Derbyshire seamers also took full advantage of the muggy conditions to reduce Glamorgan to 52 for 5 after 21 overs of the first session. They recovered after tea, thanks to Chris Cooke’s 69, and closed on 175 for 7.Play did not get under way until 3.40 after water had seeped under the run-ups at both ends, and with 46 overs remaining, Glamorgan made a solid start before five wickets fell for the addition of only 25 runs.Nick Selman and Jack Murphy had put on 27, before Murphy edged to second slip, then Selman, in the following over, was leg before, playing across the line to Duanne Olivier. Tony Palladino took the next two wickets, when Owen Morgan nicked one to the wicketkeeper, and Usman Khawaja, playing his first home game, deflected the ball via his pad onto the stumps. In the penultimate over before tea Kiran Carlson was dismissed by a beauty from Ravi Rampaul, that pitched on middle and leg before moving off the pitch before taking the edge and caught at second slip. After tea, Cooke and David Lloyd counterattacked effectively by more than doubling the score, with both batsmen striking three boundaries in overs from Palladino and Rampaul. The sixth-wicket pair had put on 58 in 11.2 overs before Lloyd, played a loose drive against Rampaul and was caught by Gary Wilson.Cooke continued to attack, reaching his fifty from 51 balls which included nine fours, and without his contribution, Glamorgan would have been in a sorry state.Andrew Salter then gave Cooke solid support, striking Olivier for an enormous six over midwicket, as the seventh-wicket pair shared a fifty-run partnership in only nine overs. Surprisingly, spin was not introduced until five overs before the close, when Matthew Critchley came on, and was immediately treated with respect, but it was Palladino who broke the partnership four overs before the close when Cooke played onThe new batsman, Prem Sisodya (19), is making his Championship debut, after coming through the Glamorgan Academy and touring New Zealand with the England Under-19 team last winter, and after striking two boundaries, stayed with Salter until the end.

Rangers will no doubt be busy in the January transfer window as they look to shape the squad to the new manager's liking, but it looks as though the first order of business is tying down a current star to a permanent deal.
Rangers transfer news
The Gers have started a new era with Philippe Clement in charge, with the 49-year-old already making a good impression since replacing Michael Beale as manager. There is a eight-point deficit to make up on current Scottish Premiership leader Celtic, however, so it is going to take some superb form to oust the biggest rivals as the reigning Scottish champions.
For that to happen, Rnagers could need to look to make new signings during the January transfer window. Some important additions were made in the summer, including the likes of Jack Butland, Danilo and Kieran Dowell, but further improvements are needed.
The Gers have been linked with a number of players in recent times, and it has been reported that Clement himself is scouring for "solutions" to his squad, and now a fresh update has emerged regarding their winter transfer business.

Rangers want permanent Sima move
According to a new update from Football Insider, Abdallah Sima could make a permanent move to Rangers in January, having shone on loan since arriving from Brighton before the start of the season:
"Rangers will explore the possibility of landing on-loan Brighton star Abdallah Sima permanently but could face competition for his signature, sources have told Football Insider. The 22-year-old has impressed at Ibrox since arriving on a season-long loan in the summer window and is attracting the attention of several other clubs.
"Football Insider revealed on Friday (27 October) that Rangers do not have the option to buy Sima at the end of his temporary spell."
This could be an excellent piece of business by Rangers, with Sima doing well to date at Ibrox, showcasing his goalscoring prowess in the Scottish Premiership. Sima's stats of scoring five times in just four league starts in 2023/24 to date – nine appearances in the competition overall – are impressive, and he has also netted twice in the Europa League.
The 22-year-old has been described as an "electric" player by Rangers captain James Tavernier, who urged others to reach his level, saying of him:
"(Abdallah Sima) has been a real attacking threat for us this season. He’s got electric pace and can finish in difficult areas. Generally with our forwards, we have to give them better service as a team. We need to get around them and give them opportunities to get on the scoresheet the same as Abdallah."
The early signs suggest that a permanent move for Sima is a no-brainer for the Gers, considering the influence he is already having and the fact that he should only improve in the coming years.
Regular football away from Brighton for good could also appeal to the player himself, rather than jumping from club to club on a temporary basis, allowing him to settle properly and kick on further in his career.

The former India captain says there are “better options than Raina”, and wants Dhoni to bat more aggressively
ESPNcricinfo staff18-Jul-2018The Indian team management may be grappling with questions over their ideal No. 4 in ODIs, but Sourav Ganguly has picked “KL Rahul, eyes closed.” The former India captain felt playing Rahul in that position that would ease the pressure on MS Dhoni, who he pointed out was “struggling” and needed to start “hitting” at No. 6.Virat Kohli the India captain, admitted that an unsettled middle order was one of the concerns for the side as they prepare for next year’s World Cup. Ganguly believed the team management “isn’t looking after their best batsmen properly” and isn’t sending out the right message with the constant chopping and changing.”Your top four have to be the best players; you have to persist with them. Go and speak to KL Rahul and say I’ll give you 15 games, just go and play,” Ganguly told . “India need a No. 4. MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina and Dinesh Karthik are very good at five, six and seven. But a top class player has to be at four.”Ganguly was making a case for that batsman being Ajinkya Rahane or Rahul, who was left out of the series-deciding final ODI in Headingley. Rahul, who started the tour with a scintillating century in the Manchester T20I, managed only 9 not out and 0 in the first two ODIs.”Two of your best batsmen aren’t being looked after properly,” Ganguly said. “I’m not saying it’s deliberate, maybe it’s a mistake, maybe you look at it differently from the other side. From this side, I feel those two have to play at four, else it’s too much of pressure on Rohit Sharma or Virat Kohli. In South Africa, you won, Kohli got three hundreds in six games. If Kohli doesn’t get a hundred, you will find it difficult to win matches.”Getty Images
When Ganguly was asked why India didn’t have a settled look a year on from the World Cup, he said: “Because they don’t give enough opportunities. KL Rahul got a magnificent hundred in Manchester. In the other two T20Is, he was out to one brilliant catch in Bristol. He was not out in Nottingham, missed out at Lord’s and then he’s dropped. You won’t be able to produce players like that.”According to Ganguly, the No. 4 debate isn’t the only worry for India. He also felt a “struggling MS Dhoni” needed to be told to play more aggressively, while they need to move on from Suresh Raina, who had returned to ODI cricket after nearly three years. Raina top-scored with 46 in India’s loss in the Lord’s ODI, but had little else to show for in the remaining two matches, looking completely out of depth, both against spin and the short ball.”I think there are better players around, with all due respect he’s [Raina] played for long periods of time, got runs in ODIs, but not much overseas. But you need to move on,” Ganguly said. “If Dhoni’s got to play, he has to get into positions where he has to keep hitting. If he has 24-25 overs to play, you’ve got to build an innings and he’s struggling at the moment.”He may turn it around, you don’t know what’s in store for great players – he’s been a great player for India in the shorter formats – but at the present moment he’s not been turning it around and it’s been that way for a year, year-and-a-half or probably more. So they need a good player at four and five, and then if they think MS Dhoni is the way forward, him at six and Pandya at seven.”
Everton are hoping to divert away from a repeat of the past two Premier League seasons, as Sean Dyche bids to get his squad firing and far from the drop zone in his first full campaign at Goodison Park.
The fate of the Toffees’ top-flight status was left until the final weeks of the 2022/23 and 2021/22 campaigns, and for all the thrill and relief at the end credits, everyone involved with the club would prefer a less dramatic conclusion in 2024.
From new ownership to new players, the Blues must focus solely on their on-pitch performance, with the trajectory of the season ahead in the squad’s hand to steer the club into the path of better days on the footballing side of things.
One way that this could be done is through the arrival of additional reinforcements in January, with Everton already linked to a host of talent as the opening of the winter market fast approaches.
Everton manager Sean Dyche.
In the summer, Dyche welcomed five new faces to Merseyside in the hope to bolster his squad options, with the focal point very much on the attack with the free transfer of Ashley Young the only defensive signing from the five.
Everton’s search for new players in January could highlight an opposing demographic to the summer, with some defensive options linked in the media.
Everton's January transfer targets
The future of Kalvin Phillips is a narrative to watch in January, with the Englishman looking as though he could make a premature exit from Manchester City just a year and a half after his arrival.
The former Leeds United star is clearly not in Pep Guardiola’s future plans, with him securing just two starts in the Premier League since he signed for City.
It’s since been speculated that Everton could be one of the clubs eyeing the defence-minded midfielder, should he opt to leave the Etihad this winter.
Another name rumoured to be of interest to the Toffees is young Southampton defensive midfielder Shea Charles, who could offer further support in acting as the anchor in the middle of the park at Goodison.
Ecuador defender Willian Pacho.
In a deeper role comes Everton’s latest rumoured target, with the Blues claimed to be one of the Premier League clubs eyeing Eintracht Frankfurt centre-back Willian Pacho.
A recent report from TEAMtalk names the Merseyside club as a side that are watching the 22-year-old, with Crystal Palace and West Ham United also admirers of the defender.
Willian Pacho’s value has rocketed
Born in 2001, Pacho is one of the most promising upcoming talents in Germany in his position, as reflected by his rise in market value over the past year.
As documented by Football Transfers, the Ecuadorian’s value has risen month by month since April, with a rise of almost 283% highlighted, while his expected transfer value (xTV) reading at €5.5m (£4.7m) in April to €20.6m (£18m) today.
Rewind to October 2022, just one year ago, and the 22-year-old sporting an xTV of just €4.1m (£3.5m), with TEAMtalk relaying that Frankfurt are said to value their prized possession around the £35m mark.
A continually rising value is a mere representation of a player's fine form and importance to their team, and in Pacho, Frankfurt currently have one of the best central defenders in the Bundesliga this term.
Pacho has been one of the top defenders in the Bundesliga this season
With regard to his form in the 2023/24 campaign, the young defender has shown his ability to keep up with the best in Germany, with him ranking within the top 10% of centre-backs in a number of departments.
Heading into this weekend, Pacho ranks in the top 7% of central defenders in the Bundesliga this season, as per FBref, for his average of 2.88 tackles per 90, and in the top 4% for his average of tackling 84.6% dribblers per 90, reinforcing his solidity at the back.
Previously lauded as “superb” during his time at Royal Antwerp by talent scout Jacek Kulig, the 6 foot 1 centre-back was dubbed by Kulig as a “complete” defender at the age of just 19, showing his quality from the beginning of his senior career.
For Everton, potentially acquiring the 22-year-old could symbolise the start of a rebuild at the back under Dyche with a talent that seems destined to reach the top based on his success in Germany so far.
How Willian Pacho compares to Premier League centre-backs
While the Bundesliga is a highly-respected league in Europe, the German top flight is largely different to the Premier League, with the representation of a player’s quality somewhat differing depending on the demands of the respective leagues.
When comparing Pacho’s start to the Bundesliga season with Frankfurt to one of each of the Premier League’s top-four side’s centre-backs, it’s clear to see the areas in which he excels.

While the players that represent the Premier League clubs are established and high-functioning defenders, the demands of their tasks differ to those faced by Pacho.
Frankfurt entered the weekend in 7th, however, they have conceded the fewest number of goals in the league, having let in only six in their opening eight fixtures.
There is little to deny that Pacho could be suited to the Premier League based on his numbers, but how could he fit in at Everton?
Willian Pacho could be the heir to Michael Keane
Dyche has opted for the central defensive pairing of James Tarkowski and Jarrad Branthwaite so far this term, though his depth at the back has been stretched, with some of those in the pecking order easily replaceable.
Michael Keane’s importance to Everton has dipped over the past few years, highlighted by him recording 32 appearances in 2021/22, to only 12 in 2022/23, spending a vast period of the campaign as an unused substitute.
The 30-year-old has secured two starts from the Toffees’ opening nine fixtures this season, and with his contract set to expire in 2025, a replacement could be on the cards for Dyche to discover in the window.
By signing Pacho, Dyche would not only replace Keane, but also promote competition in central defence – a tactic that would only strengthen his side by inducing a higher level of performance to battle for a starting spot.

As portrayed in the table above, Pacho’s ability to protect his goal is beyond the capabilities of Keane, based on the Englishman’s averages over the 2022/23 Premier League campaign and the 22-year-old’s start in the Bundesliga this term.
It’s imperative that Dyche looks for long-term solutions for his side at Goodison, which he could start by hiring Pacho, who could add a new lease of life to the defence in a signing that would represent the desire to progress.
