South Africa target greater lower-order efficiency

Faf du Plessis wants his tail-enders to find ways to resist the reverse-swinging ball, and his bowlers to try and match their Australian counterparts’ effectiveness with the old ball

Firdose Moonda06-Mar-2018

AFP

South Africa’s abilities in the lower order – when batting and bowling – will be their focus ahead of the second Test against Australia, which starts on Friday in Port Elizabeth. While South Africa lost their last five wickets for 12 runs and 15 runs in their first innings and second respectively at Kingsmead, Australia’s tail was in full flow. The visitors’ last five wickets put on 174 runs in the first innings, enough to create an unbreachable gap between the two sides, and their last five second-innings wickets accumulated 71.”Our bowlers were really good in the Test,” captain Faf du Plessis said. “Both teams were 160 for 5 in all four innings, so it shows the learning we can take is to be more ruthless with their tail. Once they got through the first seven or eight batters, it was pretty easy [for Australia] to get through our tail.”So, South Africa are left with a problem in two parts. They need to find more resilience from their lower order and more incisiveness from their bowlers later in the innings, when the ball is old and perhaps reverse-swinging. Australia were able to get the ball to reverse fairly early in both innings and though South Africa also found reverse-swing, they did not do so as potently – especially without Dale Steyn in their ranks.”There was a real difference in the skill with the reverse-swinging ball,” du Plessis said. “Rabada and Starc were the two standouts. Every time KG [Rabada] had the ball in his hand, it looked like he could take a wicket, and the same with Starc. One bowler in each team has got the potential to do that to the tail. Dale is very deadly with the reverse-swinging ball, but he’s not available right now so we need to find ways with the guys that we have to eliminate the tail a lot quicker. The only weapon we have in the team right now who does that is Kagiso.”Steyn, who is recovering from a heel injury sustained during the New Year’s Test against India, could come into contention for the third Test against Australia, but will need to play at least one domestic first-class match before then. He will have an opportunity – a round of three-day provincial matches starts later this week and a round of franchise games next week – but South Africa have no guarantees of when he will be back. He is certain not to play in Port Elizabeth, where a searing reverse-swinging spell helped South Africa beat Australia in 2014 to level the series 1-1, so the hosts will have to find another way. “The tail is going to have to scrap, and the top seven or eight batters will have to take responsibility,” du Plessis said.South Africa’s senior batsmen, specifically Hashim Amla and du Plessis, are under the microscope after scores of 8 and 0, and 15 and 4 respectively. There will also be some pressure on Dean Elgar, who scored 16 runs in the Test, and AB de Villiers, whose first-innings 71 was overshadowed by a needless run-out at the non-striker’s end in the second. All these batsmen are thought to be entering the twilight or, in Elgar’s case, the latter half of their careers. And one of the reasons they have not faced more serious consequences for their lack of consistency, which has stretched back to the England tour last year, is because it appeared that there were no possible replacements. But now, after the younger crop came good in the Durban Test, South Africa have evidence of depth.Aiden Markram was the star with a magnificent century in difficult circumstances, helping ease concerns about who could be the flagbearer in the post du Plessis-de Villiers-Amla era. “It was a brilliant knock,” du Plessis said. “He went through a tough stage against India. The run-out between him and AB would have been weighing on his mind. Australia were trying to make sure that was something weighing on his shoulders. To get through that says a lot about the guy.”Theunis de Bruyn, who took on Starc and made a fighting 36, and Quinton de Kock, who hit form with 83, also made strong statements. Their contributions helped drag South Africa into a fifth day in Durban and gave them a morale boost ahead of the second Test. “I’m really proud of the character. Most teams, when you get into a position of strength like that, the team rocks up on day four and you bully them [the opposition] all day,” du Plessis said. “It was great to see the fight from our bowlers too. We didn’t make a great start with the bat, but it was great to see the character from the young guys. That will do them well for the series.”

Hard toil ends long wait for Derbyshire

At the 24th time of asking Derbyshire have finally won a Championship match at home. When the run was broken, it came in the most unlikely circumstances

David Hopps at Derby23-Apr-2018
ScorecardAt the 24th time of asking Derbyshire have finally won a Championship match at home. When the run was broken, it came in the most unlikely circumstances: Middlesex, the big boys from the smoke, champions in 2016 and the most unlikely relegation victims a year later, vanquished by 101 runs.Derbyshire have got a monkey off their backs, although as it was St George’s Day, it should be conceded that as achievements go that is not quite as exciting as slaying a dragon. When release came at 5.12pm, with 14 overs to spare, a modest crowd let out a brief cheer then got up and went home looking mightily relieved. Middlesex’s last seven wickets had not been relinquished readily. That was particularly true of the ninth-wicket pair of James Harris and Tom Helm who added 106 in 31 overs, taking the game deep into the final session, Helm registering a maiden first-class fifty and Harris, who Middlesex believe can develop into a fully-fledged allrounder, providing evidence for the cause with an unbeaten 62.Although 24 matches might be a long time, Derbyshire have endured worse. Dave Houghton was their coach for the longest unsuccessful home Championship run of all, at the turn of the century, and as fate often has it, he was looking on again in his current role as Middlesex’s batting coach. Then there is always the comparison with Derby County FC. From September 2007, the football club embarked upon a run of 38 league games without a win. During that run they were relegated from the Premier League with a record low number of points and a bookmaker paid out on them being relegated after only six matches.Derbyshire have not remotely reached those subterranean standards. Their home ground has improved markedly in recent seasons, a pleasure to visit, so any sense of better times ahead should be celebrated. And last season they reached the quarter-finals of the NatWest Blast. If they have not yet had cause to move the trophy cabinet out of the Boardroom, where pride of place is given to the 1936 Championship-winning side, at least they have had cause to remember where it is.All in all, they are inured to lean spells in these parts and regard them as good for the soul – something akin to a cricketing diet: you feel all the better when you get the chance to gorge on something tasty. Not many counties have been asked by a senior executive at the ECB: “Why do you bother?” How many reasons did he want? And failure does give the members something to grumble about at the AGM.But things are rarely as bad as they sound. Nearly all bleak runs carry memories of great finishes, of entertainment provided, of chances spurned. Since Derbyshire’s previous home win, against Leicestershire in September 2014, three missed opportunities stand out.Leicestershire might have been beaten at the end of 2015 but when Derbyshire’s eighth wicket fell, with 10 still needed off five balls, the coach at the time, Graeme Welch, insisted that they blocked out because he could not countenance losing to Leicestershire twice in the same season. If only he had known what was to befall them. The following season, they were well placed against Gloucestershire only for the final day to be washed out. And in 2017 most regrets centre around the visit of Northamptonshire when some fine smiting by Richard Levi, who made 99 from 79 balls, enabled their opponents to chase down 326 with three wickets and a ball to spare.Derbyshire had declared on the third evening, setting Middlesex 442 for victory, the highest chase achieved against them in their history. The loss of three wickets by the close had emphasised that the target was purely notional and two wickets fell early on the fourth morning – the nightwatchman, Ollie Rayner, slickly caught to his left at first slip by Wayne Madsen and Max Holden nibbling at a ball from Hardus Viljoen that was angled across him.Derbyshire’s pace bowling stocks are not deep, so it is hard not to watch Viljoen, Duanne Olivier and Ravi Rampaul with a sense of trepidation that they might come to grief at any moment. As lunch approached, Derbyshire were forced to look to more part-time practitioners and it paid better dividends than they would have dared to hope as Paul Stirling, on 42, gave Luis Reece a return catch and Simpson was lbw to Wayne Madsen’s offspin in the final over of the session.Seven down at lunch was a comfortable place to be. Two injured Middlesex seamers, Harris and Toby Roland-Jones, the extent of their injuries not yet known, then resisted until mid-afternoon at which point Roland-Jones’ enterprising resistance was broken by the legspin of Matt Critchley. But the second new ball brought nothing, apart from some playing and missing at wide balls and Derbyshire entered tea still needing two wickets. It seemed to be taking an age. To think that Bob Taylor, one of Derbyshire’s most famous sons, once stood behind the timbers long enough to take 2,069 dismissals: by now two seemed taxing enough. At tea, the Derbyshire photographer, historian and former committee member David Griffin was giving Jigar Naik a mention. “I have nightmares about it still,” he said. Nine years ago, Derbyshire had Leicestershire seven down, and more than 200 behind, entering the final day at Grace Road. They shook hands on a draw that evening as Naik celebrated what remains as his only first-class century.Helm’s previous first-class best was 28, but he made untroubled progress, striking Critchley’s legspin for six shortly before reaching his maiden first-class fifty. He fell lbw soon afterwards, struck on the back leg by the same bowler.Fourteen overs were left when Tim Murtagh, no mug at No. 11 but another Middlesex seamer clearly struggling with injury, was bowled by Olivier as he failed to get in line – the South African’s eighth in the match. Derbyshire had their home win after 1306 days, manufactured by three bowlers with Test credentials;, for Middlesex, it was a reminder that even though they are overwhelmingly fancied to return to Division One at the first time of asking, nothing comes automatically. They know that and they will prosper.

West Ham insider says club have taken "highly rated" gem on trial

West Ham United are in a great run of form despite the defeat at Anfield and have now taken a promising youngster on trial with the incentive of earning a dream move to the Premier League, according to reports.

What's the latest news involving West Ham United?

Recently, The Athletic have reported that free agent Jesse Lingard will not be moving to West Ham on a free transfer after a spell training with the club and the former Manchester United man is now participating in sessions with Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq as he looks to secure his next move.

Cited by The Mirror, David Moyes has indicated that he is not too phased that Lingard will not be joining the Hammers on a permanent basis, as he stated in the aftermath of his side's 3-1 defeat to Liverpool: "No not at all (disappointed he has left to train with Al-Ettifaq), I’m quite comfortable and more than relaxed with it. I think I’ve been indicating to you (the media) boys that we’re having to see what he’s going to do and how’s he going to be. We like Jesse a lot but I just don’t know if we need another player in the position he would probably play for us."

Journalist Dean Jones has suggested to GIVEMESPORT that West Ham winger Jarrod Bowen could consider a move to Premier League high-flyers Liverpool as speculation continues to swirl over his future at the London Stadium.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has spoken on CaughtOffside’s The Debrief Podcast and believes that links could continue with Bowen and Liverpool – alongside other wingers – due to the current state of play surrounding Reds' icon Mohamed Salah, who is another big-name footballer who has attracted interest from the Middle East.

Who do West Ham United have on trial?

As per EXWHUEmployee reported by The West Ham Way, West Ham United have taken Perth Glory youngster James Overy on trial, who is someone that the Hammers have scouted since their trip to Australia in pre-season.

The popular West Ham insider confirmed the news, as he stated: "I have been told by my sources that James Overy is currently on trial with our Academy. He is a highly rated right-back who impressed when playing against us for Perth Glory during our pre-season tour."

nayef-aguerd-west-ham-liverpool-opinion

Not much in the way of data is available regarding Overy; however, he received strong praise from former Perth Glory interim boss Kenny Lowe in the aftermath of his former club's 6-2 defeat to West Ham United back in July.

Cited by Australian outlet KEEPUP, Lowe stated: "The right-back was 15 – and he’s a winger. He’s never played right back in his life. Poor lad. He won’t sleep tonight – and he was brilliant."

Despite being unlikely to break through to the West Ham first-team any time soon if he were to join permanently, it is an encouraging sign that the Hammers are looking at players from all corners of the world, such as Overy, to strengthen their academy squad in east London.

Spurs: Lilywhites star was once worth £150m, now he’s worth just £7m

Tottenham Hotspur lost their way following the departure of Mauricio Pochettino, as Daniel Levy took a sharp turn away from what had been ushering in a slow and steady return to the top.

The former Southampton boss had cultivated a fine atmosphere in north London once again, turning mid-table finishes into European nights, before even launching a Premier League title charge before reaching the Champions League final too.

They were poised to win plenty, but seemingly out of nowhere, their chairman got unsettled. He would admit his failures in the recent fan forum: "I had gone through a period where we'd almost won. With Mauricio we went through some very good times. We didn't quite get there but we came very close and we had a change in strategy. The strategy was 'let's bring in a trophy manager.'

"We did it twice and look you have to learn from your mistakes. They're great managers but maybe not for this club. For what we want, we want to play in a certain way and if that means it has to take a little bit longer to win maybe it's the right thing for us. That's why bringing Ange in was from my point of view the right decision."

That period of success was underpinned by numerous stars, as Harry Kane rose to prominence with his goalscoring and creativity, whilst the defensive foundation was built from the rock-solid pairing of Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld. Even Mousa Dembele in the midfield marked one of the greatest generals the club had ever seen.

However, it could be argued that few typified such a positive era more than Dele Alli, who has overseen a tough drop-off in recent years.

His story is a bleak one, and with immense bravery, he would share it back in July. However, it is worth remembering just how good the 27-year-old was when he was at his best.

How many goals has Dele Alli scored?

Having joined from MK Dons as a teenager, instantly many stood up and took note when the Lilywhites saw fit to unload £5m on such an unproven youngster.

Whilst he had torn up League One courtesy of his offensive exploits from midfield with 34 goal contributions in total, few could possibly have expected him to take to the top flight with such ease. However, as is often the case with generational talents such as him, there is no limit to his excellence.

The England international would score ten goals and assist nine in just his first year with Spurs, taking no time to adapt, before preparing for the season of his life.

Featuring in 37 out of a possible 38 league matches, Dele would score 18 and assist a further nine playing off Kane, truly taking the world by storm in the process. His performances were mesmeric and completely unforeseen, showing little signs of slowing down.

dele-alli-everton-tottenham-hotspur-transfer

Manchester City and Barcelona even took an interest in the creative superstar, to which his club replied with an appropriate if deterring price tag of £150m. He had the world at his feet, and Pochettino would relentlessly praise his star youngster: "If he is not the best young player in Europe, he’s one of the best. Look at his age and his statistics, the potential is massive."

He would later note in a separate interview: "He's mature enough now to accept sometimes what happens on the pitch, but he is so calm, he is so brave. Then he scored – and he scored a great goal – and I am very pleased. He needs to improve, he is not at his best expression, but it is coming."

Few could possibly predict that his claim would soon ring untrue, and that this would instead mark the sad peak of a player once destined to win it all.

What happened with Dele Alli?

Unsurprisingly, as the current Chelsea boss was dismissed, there were a few who took issue with that decision. After all, he and Dele shared a father-son relationship, with which the underlying implications could explain his sudden drop-off.

Jose Mourinho failed to recapture that spark, and eventually the club decided enough was enough. He was sent to Everton with little fanfare on a free transfer, marking the true low point for such a technically gifted player. Despite that, talkSPORT pundit Darren Ambrose retained that he should have been kept, suggesting an "outstanding player" remained in there.

However, upon speaking to Gary Neville on The Overlap, it became clear that his issues were far from the football pitch.

Speaking with immense courage, he revealed the fractured relationship he endured with his parents, among other horrors that plagued his youth. He struggled to hold back tears as he told the former Manchester United full-back, who tried desperately to comfort a man clearly suffering from so much emotional turmoil.

Having since emerged from the six-week rehab programme to which he admitted himself, there is hope that he can come out the other side as a man no longer troubled by the ghosts of his past. Potentially, if the Toffees are lucky, he could also reignite a football career that has been understandably put on the back burner.

What is Dele Alli doing now?

Still at Finch Farm, the 6 foot 2 maestro continues to battle his fitness woes as he seeks to return to first-team action. After all, should he become available, there are few at Goodison Park who boast half as much quality as Dele.

However, to mark his sensational fall from grace, Football Transfers helps showcase that fall in valuation, from a man with a reported £150m price tag by his name.

They instead suggest that Sean Dyche's man is worth just €7.8m (£7m), as Spurs were forced to oversee the painful depreciation of one of their brightest ever stars.

During the 2021/22 season, it was Frank Lampard who managed to usher out just a glimpse of the talent English football knows well, as his half-time substitution against Crystal Palace helped spearhead the most miraculous of turnarounds as they came from 2-0 down to win 3-2.

His creativity and attacking impetus proved vital in retaining their Premier League status, a feat they will hope to accomplish again. There is no doubt that the entire football world will patiently await his return to fitness, and hope that he can once again begin starring at the elite level where many will feel he belongs.

An honour to play this historic Test – Sarfraz

Almost the entire focus has been on Ireland in their debut Test, which will suit Pakistan just fine as they look to start their tour on a winning note

Tim Wigmore10-May-20183:27

‘Will keep my sunglasses on to hide a few tears’

Nearly 66 years after his country’s inaugural Test, Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed is proud to be part of a similarly historic moment for his opponents.”It is a big honour for me and my team to play this historic Test match – the first Test match to be played in Ireland,” Sarfraz said. “Everyone will see this match so we are very ready to play, it’s a great match to play in.”Almost the entire focus in the build-up to the game has been on Ireland, which will suit Pakistan just fine. Pakistan will take being part of history here, but the Test will also double as crucial preparation for their two-Test series in England later in May and June. There they will attempt to at least match the successes they had in England in 2016, with an engaging series ultimately tied 2-2. The side has lost a vast swathe of experience since then – most obviously Misbah-ul-Haq and Younis Khan, but they are now also without Yasir Shah, who played a crucial role in both victories in 2016. Yasir misses the tour with a hip injury. His absence means that legspinner Shadab Khan, who has established himself as one of the world’s most effective limited-overs bowlers, is poised to play his second Test. He recorded unimpressive match figures of 1 for 145 against West Indies on debut over 12 months ago, and has limited first-class experience – this Test will be only his tenth first-class game. But his figures are notable – 46 wickets, including match figures of 10 for 157 in his most recent game, Pakistan’s tour victory over Northamptonshire.”Definitely Yasir Shah is a very experienced bowler and we miss him a lot but the good thing is Shadab Khan bowled really well in the last tour match and he got 10 wickets against Northamptonshire, so hopefully Shadab will bowl well in the Test matches as well,” Sarfraz said.Shadab will pose a challenge to Ireland, though their captain William Porterfield believes that his side’s extensive experience against the No. 1 T20I bowler Rashid Khan – the only bowler ranked ahead of Shadab in the format – should help prepare them for that. “Whether it’s his first game or his 100th, there is now footage of him,” Porterfield said. “While not comparing the two bowlers we have come up against a very good legspinner [Rashid] over the last couple of years and we’re going to get that again this week.”Shadab will fit into an inexperienced and somewhat experimental Pakistan line-up. Both Imam-ul-Haq and Faheem Ashraf are set to slot in as Test debutants. Imam’s tour form has won over Sami Aslam’s track record in England: he made two composed and well-received half-centuries in two Tests in England two years ago.”We played our first match against Kent and they both played together so we saw who was playing well,” Sarfraz said. “We saw that Imam was playing better, he scored two fifties in the practice matches so that’s why we go with Imam-ul-Haq.”Faheem’s selection is more intriguing. His ascent over the last year has been rapid, although it has been limited to only white-ball formats so far. But as an allrounder – and with Shadab’s all-round skills – he offers Pakistan some much needed flexibility and, theoretically, depth in both their batting and bowling.Pakistan trained on a sun-kissed afternoon at Malahide, but the grey clouds that lurked nearby are, unsurprisingly for early May in Ireland, likely to be a significant factor in the game.”Brother, that’s not just in our hands,” Sarfraz said. “It’s very difficult for both teams. If the rain stops the game it’s very bad for both teams.”Such concerns have been a constant for Pakistan throughout their tour of the UK and Ireland so far. The weather has been too cold – Imam said that the conditions were “winter” – and too hot, but never just right.”We tried our level best to play more cricket in the practice matches but we played two games in different weather. The first match against Kent was too cold, but the Northampton match was too hot,” Sarfraz rued. “Two days ago [it] was very cold but today it is very shiny. The last practice match was very good – everything was complete, batsmen batted well, bowlers bowled well, so we are ready to play a Test match.”
