Pakistan blown away in first 10 overs – Flower

Grant Flower says Pakistan’s lack of footwork has been the main reason for their struggles in the New Zealand tour, but it’s still not too late to turn it around

Grant Flower would be well within his rights to be worried. He’s the batting coach of a side that came dangerously close to posting ODI cricket’s lowest score ever. Against the fire and intensity of New Zealand’s fast bowlers, Pakistan’s top order has crumbled in each of the three games they’ve played. However, the manner of defeat on Saturday, culminating with the side being skittled out for 74 – they were 32 for 8 at their nadir – has sparked criticism from around the world. For many, it is evidence that lingering issues around batting in fast, bouncy conditions are nowhere close to being resolved.Flower accepted that playing in New Zealand was a big challenge for Pakistan, and one they hadn’t risen to till now. “The conditions might have helped New Zealand, but that’s no excuse for some of the shots we played,” he told ESPNcricinfo. “They’re world-class bowlers playing in their home conditions, so they’ll obviously have an advantage on that front. We have players more used to playing on slow, low wickets, and that obviously tells in the way some of the wickets fell.”New Zealand’s conditions are a world away – in more ways than one – from the kind Pakistan are used to playing in, but the University Oval in Dunedin has one of the slower pitches among international grounds in the country, and it had showed in the first innings, with New Zealand’s batsmen struggling to time the ball. When Pakistan batted, however, the pitch looked altogether different, the ball whizzing through to the wicketkeeper around shoulder height, and rising sharply off the surface. It might have been to do with the drizzle that was a constant for much of the Pakistan innings, but with the ball coming on to the bat, that could easily have worked in the batsmen’s favour.”Yeah, well, the ball gets a bit wetter and there’s a bit more zip in the wicket,” Flower said. “But it’s still no excuse, like I said. The guys are good enough to adapt, but at this stage we haven’t been good enough, or smart enough. Against world-class bowlers, you have to be ready from ball one, but in the first ten overs so far, we’ve been blown away.”Grant Flower addresses the media in Lahore•Getty Images/AFP

It isn’t just the wickets that have been the problem for Pakistan in the first Powerplay. The top order has consistently looked uncomfortable against the lethal opening pair of Tim Southee and Trent Boult, too often sitting on the back foot, looking to survive. It has stood in stark contrast to the way Martin Guptill and Colin Munro have approached the first 10 overs, looking to attack the bowlers and getting ahead of par scoring- rates.”To be honest, it’s apprehension and getting caught on the crease with guys’ lack of foot movement,” Flower said. “The better way is trying to be more positive and try and take on the bowling a bit more. We’ve probably been just a bit apprehensive. I think if you get a few shots away and take the challenge to the bowlers, then all of a sudden they have to think of their lengths a bit, so hopefully we’re going to see a more positive display on our batting side.”With a result like this, particularly in a game that had the series on the line, things can often fall apart very quickly. And it did when Pakistan toured England in 2016. There, too, the low point was a thrashing in the third ODI, where England amassed a record 444 in the first innings, and ended up winning 4-1.”I hope not [that this doesn’t become like the England tour],” Flower said with a laugh. “Mickey [Arthur] was quite measured after the match. He had a few words, but it was more just trying to let the guys know that the tour’s not over and we can turn it around very quickly. It sounds like a cliché, but that’s the thing. One good match or two good matches and it’s 3-2 and then you’re going into the T20s so hopefully the guys are thinking that way, and I suppose time will tell.”There’s always a few things we can work on technically. I spoke to the guys, we had a travelling day today, so I spoke to one or two. Then we’ll take that to the nets tomorrow, we have practice in the morning. But sometimes you don’t want to get too technical, you want to keep trying to be positive. Sometimes too much advice is not the right way to go, you just want the guys to go out and hit the ball. But like I said, it’s a balance that the guys have to find, and hopefully over the next few days we will find that.”But just going out and hitting the ball hasn’t been easy. That isn’t just because of the conditions, but also a New Zealand bowling line-up every bit as dominant in their home conditions as more celebrated attacks like South Africa’s and Australia’s. When pressed about how he reckoned Pakistan could reconcile playing attacking shots without playing the sort of poor shots they have so far, Flower was blunt.”That’s what you get paid for. That’s what you do all the practice for and the hours in the nets. The guys have to find that balance. If they can’t, they’re not worth their place in the team.”

"Unseen": Alasdair Gold shares what’s "taking place" at Tottenham right now

Reliable Tottenham Hotspur correspondent Alasdair Gold has lifted the lid on something "largely unseen" and exciting going on at Spurs right now, concerning their set-up.

What's the latest Spurs news?

New manager Ange Postecoglou has, thus far, proved his doubters wrong since his switch from SPFL giants Celtic to north London over the summer.

Tottenham are showcasing an electric, entertaining new brand of football under Postecoglou; following ex-manager Antonio Conte's regrettable last season in charge of the club.

The Lilywhites have scored 11 goals in their opening four Premier League games; impressively equalling last season's treble-winners Man City in that regard.

Spurs remain unbeaten and have sealed three wins in that time, having drew 2-2 away to Brentford on the opening day, with subsequent 2-0 wins over Man United and Bournemouth following on from that result.

Their most impressive victory to date under Postecoglou was their rip-roaring 5-2 win away to Burnley at Turf Moor. Indeed, Son Heung-min's hat-trick, James Maddison's sumptuous curling effort and a screamer from Cristian Romero sealed a statement three points in Lancashire just before the international break.

Speaking to Sky last month, Postecoglou explained exactly why he won't be divulging from his exciting style of play any time soon; speaking of a need to entertain the fans.

"That's the beauty of our game," Postecoglou said.

"The beauty of football is that there are so many ways you can have success, so many ways you can set up your team, so many ways you can counteract the opposition.

"I'm probably at one extreme and there are others at the other extreme and we can both have success in this game.

"I think especially with a football club like this, that has consistently looked for that in their teams, they've loved the entertainers, there's a connection there with that kind of football."

The Spurs first team have come on leaps and bounds over the last few weeks, but away from Postecoglou's men, reporter Gold says there is something "largely unseen" and exciting going at Hotspur Way right now.

Tottenham Hotspur academy

Indeed, beneath the Tottenham boss, Gold writes on X and for football.london that there appears to be a "revolution taking place" concerning the N17 academy set up.

New youth signing Luka Vuskovic, who will apparently come to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in 2025 when he hits 18, looks set to become another one Spurs' exciting young crop currently turning heads.

Gold writes that Aflie Dorrington, Jamie Donley, Brooklyn Lyons-Foster, Josh Keeley, Luca Gunter, Ashley Phillips, Mikey Moore, Callum Olusesi, Oliver Irow, Tyrese Hall, Matthew Craig and George Abbott are all youngsters to watch out for.

New academy head Simon Davies has been tasked with syncing up the academy to the first team, and there is also a renewed belief at Tottenham surrounding the talent coming through. That's not even taking into account the promise of teenagers currently out on loan spells like Alfie Devine and Dane Scarlett.

Gold, as a result, goes on to say that the future appears very bright for Spurs beneath the surface as well as on it.

Ismail's five-for keeps series alive for South Africa

India paid for an insipid lower-order collapse with their first defeat in the T20 series, as South Africa stayed alive with a five-wicket victory at the Wanderers, with two matches left in the series

The Report by Akshay Gopalakrishnan18-Feb-2018Christopher Lee/ICC/Getty Images

India paid for an insipid lower-order collapse with their first defeat in the T20 series, as South Africa stayed alive with a five-wicket victory at the Wanderers, with two matches left in the series. Shabnim Ismail, South Africa’s formidable new-ball bowler and among the world’s fastest, rocked India with her maiden five-for in T20Is. She made her presence felt all over the Indian line-up: she ended a burgeoning innings from the India captain Harmanpreet Kaur, slowed down scoring with wickets in the middle overs, and then wiped out the lower order, as India lost their last five wickets for only nine runs.India controlled the early exchanges of the chase and even sent back South Africa’s destructive opener Lizelle Lee in the third over. But Dane van Niekerk turned the tide in her team’s favour with a stroke-filled 26, and South Africa never fell behind after that. The bad signs for India emerged early enough. Mithali Raj and Smriti Mandhana’s belligerence at the top of the order had played a major part in each of India’s two wins before Sunday. This time their association lasted five balls. Lured into an expansive drive by Marizanne Kapp, Raj swung and edged to the wicketkeeper, as a sequence of four successive fifties ended with a five-ball duck.Mandhana, however, capitalised on her good form and raced away to offset the early loss. Ismail got her lengths wrong upon introduction, and a hat-trick of fours off her got Mandhana going. It prompted Ismail to be taken off after the solitary over that went for 17 runs, but her replacement Moseline Daniels hardly fared better, going for as many fours. South Africa’s bowlers sent down an assortment of fuller deliveries that allowed both batsmen to pierce the field on either side. When they dragged their pace back, Harmanpreet and Mandhana stepped down the track to make sure it didn’t get in the way of their timing, and laid a solid platform in the Powerplay. As has almost become a norm in South Africa this season, the introduction of the legspinner immediately impeded that charge. Having misread van Niekerk’s trajectory, Mandhana pulled her into the hands of deep midwicket, with the short ball not quite coming on. Harmanpreet continued to power through at the other end, sinking South Africa in a stream of boundaries. Offspinner Raisibe Ntozakhe received the majority of Harmanpreet’s onslaught, throwing her off her lengths by liberally stepping down, and picking her apart for a six and three fours in the 11th over.Ismail was brought back in the next over, and seeing Harmanpreet opening up, she lured her forward with an awayswinger well outside the off stump. Sure enough, she found a thick outside edge that was pouched by the keeper. Jemimah Rodrigues, the teenage sensation, fell two deliveries later, when Ismail landed a similar delivery and Rodrigues also drove away from her body, to hand a simple catch to cover. In her next over, Ismail had Anuja Patil, who was caught brilliantly by Sune Luus running backwards to her right from mid-on, and India had lost three wickets for 15 runs.Veda Krishnamurthy tantalised with a boundary-heavy 23, and it seemed like India may put up a competitive total. But Krishnamurthy fell to her own undoing, stepping down to a dipping fuller one that snuck underneath and flattened her stumps. That dismissal triggered the collapse. Ismail had her career-best figures when a short ball zipped off the surface and was gloved by Poonam Yadav to the keeper. When Pooja Vastrakar top-edged another one to mid-off, 13 unused deliveries remained, and there was little doubt that India were well under par.India’s new-ball bowlers made use of sharp swing to keep South Africa in check for the early part. But van Niekerk neutralised their effectiveness by boldly stepping down and minimising the movement. After 16 for 1 in four overs, three fours off Vastrakar in the fifth over signaled a shift in momentum, and it was a scuffle for India thereafter. The South African captain charged to left-arm spinner Rajeshwari Gayakwad’s generous flight and connected with thin air, despite having pinched four fours off the last eight balls she had faced.Luus took over the scoring from there and kept South Africa on course along with Mignon du Preez. When du Preez was deceived by Poonam’s flight and holed out down the ground, South Africa were 84 for 3, and needed 50 from six overs. But Chloe Tryon countered with a boundary barrage that helped her score 34 of 15 balls. In the final assessment, Harmanpreet may also rue her decision to turn to offspinner Anuja Patil, who had conceded 31 runs in three overs, for the 19th over. With 13 needed off 12, Tryon blasted a four and six off the first two balls to shut India out.

Wolves: Old Gold have the next Adama in exciting academy star

Wolverhampton Wanderers have had a testing time of late, having juggled financial, managerial and on-pitch woes while maintaining their status in the Premier League.

The Old Gold have put in some impressive performances so far under Gary O’Neil, who joined the side just four days before their campaign opener against Manchester United, however have not been able to determine which way the results have gone.

Only three points have been recorded from Wolves’ opening five fixtures, with a late 1-0 win at Everton the high point of the first few weeks which have seen the side miss out on points despite causing threat.

Much-needed sales were sanctioned in the summer to balance the books to adhere to Financial Fair Play (FFP) restrictions, leaving the club’s margin to replace such talents very small.

As a result, O’Neil’s squad options have been minimised, leaving room for talents outside the first team to hope to show their worth while the squad is in transition.

One star who could find a way into the senior side in the future is winger Fabian Reynolds, who joined Wolves’ academy in 2021 from AFC Kingston Youth.

Who is Fabian Reynolds?

Deployed primarily on the right wing, the 17-year-old has advanced tremendously well in the Midlands so far, seeing him excel through the ranks and earn minutes at U21 level as well as for the U18s.

Last season in the U18 Premier League, the forward had a hand in four goals, scoring two and assisting two in 21 appearances in the 2022/23 campaign for the Old Gold.

At the point of his signing for the Premier League side, his former club dubbed the forward as “formidable”, saying on their official site that he was “destined for greatness” after his performances prior to leaving.

At U13s level, the 2006-born whiz scored a remarkable 39 goals in the SYL Premier Division, demonstrating form that hinted just how much of a star he could one day become in the game.

What does Fabian Reynolds play like?

The winger has got his 2023/24 campaign off to a strong start, scoring a terrific solo goal most recently against Derby during the U18s thrilling 3-2 win.

If the tricky youngster can continue his rise through the ranks and have another impressive season for Wolves, there could be a gap in the squad for the youngster to thrive in senior surroundings, with him showing signs of having a skill set similar to a recently departed favourite.

Adama Traore bid farewell to Molineux this summer after a five-year association with the club, leaving behind a gap in the wide threat department in his absence.

In his last campaign, the Spaniard ranked in the top 5% of wingers in the Premier League for his one-on-one threat, averaging 2.95 successful take-ons per 90 to assert his dominance going forward, as per FBref.

As highlighted in the goal he scored against Derby just last week, Reynolds has strengths to his game similar to those of the dazzling dribbler that is Traore, giving O’Neil the potential to have the heir to the dangerous winger within the club’s ranks already.

Wolves' financial situations could see the club opt to promote more youth prospects as an alternative to being active in the transfer window, making this season one for O’Neil to harvest some unearthed gems in the academy.

Mayank Agarwal 'in the queue' for national call-up – chief selector

MSK Prasad also assessed India’s recent tour of South Africa and said Jasprit Bumrah’s emergence as a “Test match bowler” was a big gain

ESPNcricinfo staff28-Feb-2018

One of the biggest questions that came up when the India selectors picked the T20 squad for the tri-series in Sri Lanka was why Mayank Agarwal, this season’s most prolific run-scorer in domestic cricket, wasn’t picked. MSK Prasad, the chief of selectors, has revealed that the Karnataka batsman is “in the queue” for a national call-up.Yuvraj to decide on career after 2019

Yuvraj Singh wants to take a call on his international career after the 2019 World Cup and wants to use the IPL to make a comeback into the ODI squad.
“I am looking forward to a good IPL. It’s a very important tournament for me as it will only set me to play cricket till 2019,” Yuvraj told . “I am looking to play cricket till 2019, whatever cricket I get to play and take a call after that.”
Yuvraj last played an ODI in June in the West Indies and a T20 international in February 2017. Since then, he played only one match in the Ranji Trophy and had mediocre outings in the domestic limited-overs tournaments – 208 runs at a strike rate of 96.29 in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and 172 runs at an average of 34.40 in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
He was not included in the Duleep Trophy squads in September and neither in the recent Deodhar Trophy squads but was picked by Kings XI Punjab for INR 2 crores (US $312,000) in the auction. He had also said there were “two or three IPLs” left in him.

Agarwal has scored a record-breaking 2141 runs across formats this season and is set to play at least two more games for Karnataka in the 50-overs Deodhar Trophy starting March 4, as well as the Irani Cup four-day match for Rest of India. He struck five centuries in the Ranji Trophy, three half-centuries in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, and three hundreds and four fifties while leading Karnataka to the Vijay Hazare Trophy title.”No player should be confused about where he stands,” Prasad told . “Our committee speaks to every player – even those who are [not] selected and try to give them a fair picture. Accordingly, I spoke to Mayank and told him that with his brilliant performances in domestic cricket, he has now definitely got himself in the mix (national team reckoning). I told him that he is now in the queue.”We have followed a pattern in our selection process. Each and every national contender is in the queue and we don’t believe that anyone can jump the queue. Mayank is a wonderful kid and he completely understood what I explained to him. He told me ‘Sir, you are spot on and ‘I am not in a hurry at all’.”Prasad also assessed India’s recent tour of South Africa and said Jasprit Bumrah’s emergence as a “Test match bowler” was a big gain from the tour. He also stated that Bumrah’s “workload management” is paramount for him, as they plan to use him for “important” Test series going forward.Bumrah bowled a whopping 162.1 overs across the three formats on the tour, including 112.1 overs – more than anyone else – during the three-Test series, which saw him making his Test debut in the first Test in Cape Town.”I am delighted with Jasprit’s performance. We always had confidence in his abilities as he had done well for Gujarat in Ranji Trophy,” Prasad said. “But now our primary goal is to monitor his workload very carefully with so much international cricket ahead. We need to be careful that he is not over-used.”If you look at his action, it is a rare one and he can be prone to injuries. We need to use him for the important Test series coming ahead. For each and every fast bowler, the balance of workload is very important and the high-performance team will be monitoring it closely.”The other big gains for India on the tour were the performances of the two young wristspinners, Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav, who shared 33 wickets between them in India’s emphatic 5-1 win in the ODI series.”We always believed that wristspinners are wicket-taking investments that we had to make,” Prasad said. “Both Chahal and Kuldeep have really lived up to our expectations. The most heartening aspect has been the pool that we have managed to create. We now have five quality spinners for three formats – Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal and Axar Patel.”He also said that the endeavour of the current selection committee was to create proper bench strength and they are slowly but surely inching towards that goal.”I attribute our team’s success to the nice bench strength that we have. We have multiple players for each spot. Like we have rested Hardik Pandya for the Sri Lanka series and we want to create a back-up allrounder in Vijay Shankar.”

Leeds: Farke’s £25m ‘nightmare’ could make Rutter & Piroe even better

As the 2022/23 season came to a close, there was outcry among Leeds United supporters.

Their great club had been relegated again, thrown into the Championship after a dreadful season that saw three managers come and go.

Victor Orta also took his leave, but not before creating chaos at Elland Road, with a number of his signings quick to throw the towel in and quit life in Yorkshire for brighter footballing shores.

Out went the likes of Luis Sinisterra, Robin Koch, Rodrigo, Tyler Adams and more, but pivotally some of their brightest attacking talent remained. Crysencio Summerville happens to be one of them, as does Georginio Rutter.

Life hasn't all been plain sailing for the Frenchman, however, who looked to be following in the scuffled footsteps of Jean-Kevin Augustin.

Like the former RB Leipzig striker, Rutter arrived in the January transfer window to much fanfare. Like Augustin, he also struggled for game time. Fortunately, the 21-year-old's time at Leeds hasn't ended in a legal trial.

Instead, he has been afforded minutes in the Championship by new manager Daniel Farke. So he should too. This is a club-record £35m signing, after all.

How many goals has Rutter scored for Leeds?

The young forward endured a timid start to life in the English second tier but has come alive in recent weeks, proving he could well be the answer to Farke's prayers.

He found the net against Ipswich towards the end of August and then once football resumed last weekend following the international break, returned with aplomb.

Leeds forward Georginio Rutter.

Alongside new signing Joel Piroe, they were electrifying as the pairing combined delightfully during a 3-0 win over Millwall.

Rutter scored the final goal of the game, racing onto a ball into the penalty area from a counter attack, but not before he'd done his fair share of creating, notably making five key passes in the match, one of which found the aforementioned Piroe to open the scoring.

Such a rampant free-flowing display was like watching Bielsa's Leeds all over again. It was like watching Pablo Hernandez and Patrick Bamford of old, just with a little more pace, trickery and razzmatazz, not that two of the great Argentine's disciples had boring play styles.

Rutter and indeed Piroe will be key this term if Leeds are to secure promotion at the first time of asking, but they're not the only livewires who could play a vital role. Step forward from the wilderness, Daniel James.

Where has it gone wrong for Daniel James at Leeds?

The tale of James and Leeds is a rather remarkable one. Rewind to a cold winter's day in January of 2019 and he was undergoing a medical with the club.

A £7m deal was in place to sign him from Piroe's former employers in Swansea City, but as the minutes and hours ticked by, a deal suddenly fell through.

The Welshman had posed for club photos and done his media duties, only to remain in Wales, at least until the end of the season.

A remarkable move to Manchester United followed in June but Bielsa soon had his man in the building. After an unsuccessful stint at Old Trafford, James finally found himself crossing the penines into Leeds. A £25m move was done in 2021 but his spell hasn't been too fortuitous.

He has only found the net on four occasions in 45 outings and was far from Jesse Marsch's plans last term, ultimately loaned out to Fulham. A plethora of inconsistent displays which lacked end product was the reason for the 25-year-old's downfall.

Dan James

Now, however, he is back in the division where he really made a name for himself, having scored four and registered an impressive 11 assists in 37 Championship outings for Swansea.

How has Daniel James performed this season?

Already you can see James looks more at home at this level. For Leeds, he is not a regular starter yet but an assist in the 1-1 draw with West Brom and another assist from the bench against Millwall last Sunday has sparked hopes that he could make a huge impact this term.

He will have to overcome Summerville on the right-hand side of Farke's team first, though, but there is now a strong belief that the diminutive winger has what it takes to flourish in the EFL.

His lively cameo last weekend was all the proof we needed, with Leeds Live's Beren Cross noting in his post-match player ratings that it is "such a luxury having a player of this standing come off the bench."

That is largely owed to his remarkable pace, of which has been described as an "absolute nightmare" for the opposition by Micah Richards.

Rutter and Piroe are unlikely to be starved of service this term with Summerville and Willy Gnonto on the flanks but in James, a player with devastating pace and know-how in this league, they could well become even more menacing.

There won't be many better players off the bench this term than James, who could punish tired legs to supply chance after chance for his colleagues in the final third.

Things are starting to click for the Wales international in Leeds, and fortunately, things are starting to click for Farke too. Such a remarkable party of players to choose from in the offensive line must have the German salivating.
